I'm getting the Canon R5 for stills (Photography) since this is my primary focus (70 %) and getting the Canon C70 for video ONLY. The beauty of this setup is they BOTH use RF Lenses! That is a huge selling point along with so many other positive reasons. The C70 DOES NOT overheat (built-in cooling fan) and can record in multiple different ways to the dual cards. It's a Super35 with Dual Gain Output sensor and with the Canon Speedbooster, you get Full Frame.
I might be wrong here but Apple may release codec acceleration of these more difficult codecs in their newly announced in-house, non-Intel CPU's tomorrow.
    Get well soon.

Seems like it'll be an awesome setup. I went with the A7siii + A7iii and it seems to work out pretty good for my needs (like you said it's nice having cameras with the same lens mount) big plus for me on my setup is that they take the same batteries too lol 😂👌

If the purpose is mainly video the A7siii seems like a clear choice. if you care about photography the R5 is significantly better - the A7siii isn’t even shooting images big enough for me to use as a desktop wallpaper - if you are a photographer the R5 4K HQ is great and enough to be the winner for hybrid photo + video

The Sony camera is borrowed from Sony - it has a sticker with a number to it to prove it. Man says he will keep Sony and sell Canon, but he won't keep the borrowed Sony. You can see that Sony has paid him. There are many videos where RUclips says that they sell Canon and buy Sony, unfortunately all lie. It is not worth watching such a RUclipsr because you never know if he is telling the truth or what he was paid for.

    • @77dris
      @77dris 3 года назад

Yes, the codec is probably the biggest issue with the R5, much bigger than the overheat. Canon is coming out with new codecs in firmware updates (maybe this month) along with Clog 2 and Clog 3, but to me having 4.2.0 would be a game changer.

I chose the R5 as a complement to my C200 and some Ursas, so for me the R5 helps grab run and gun b-roll either hand-held or gimbal. The cinema cameras do longer-form interview content. So for me, the record limit is immaterial, and I have yet to get it to overheat on set. I love everything about this camera so far, and I don't even have the RF lenses yet. Despite that, I'm getting incredible handheld stuff in 10 bit that is totally useable next to my C200 in c-raw. I have a 2015 iMac, and I've been pleasantly surprised how fast the 10 bit H265 files transcode in Final Cut Pro (faster than the C200 raw files). I can go have a coffee, or grab a bite, and the files are transcoded. So for me, this thing is a dream, and the photo-capabilities are truly next level. Thanks for all you do!!

Thanks for your thoughts Max. I am trying to decide between the two myself. I am eagerly awaiting the (hopefully) upcoming firmware form Canon. If the C-log3 brings more Dynamic Range and they address heat issues then I might lean back towards the R series. An R6 + R5 combo would be quite a kit for stills and video. But I agree, this situation requires renting both and trying them out. Good luck with your new channel.

Interesting you like the image of the A7III better than that of the A7S III. Makes sense I guess given the former downsamples from a 6K image. Surprised the 10-bit color and 4.2.2. did not help sway things. Damn, that gives me pause in purchasing an A7S III now. I upgraded my A7S gen I to an A7III two years back. Everything from the right SD Cards, SD card reader, which codecs will play on my computer and the programs I had to install just to play my freaking video. Don't get me wrong I do love what I see with the Sony but I don't want to work this hard!

Super classy review and video. I know you never liked the 5DIV and EOS-R when they came out, so to hear such high praise about the R5 sure says a lot. I think for you it's a no brainer to keep the Sonys since that is what you've always shot. For those of us who are pro photographers and also want to do video, the R5 is a dream come true.
(the only thing I disagree with is the 1080p which seems to be one of the best 1080p on the market in the R5, much better than the R or other previous gen cameras)

Just about to sell my GH5S and all my MFT lenses. The upgrade is between these two cameras. I’m leaning towards the R5 with each new firmware. The “overheating” debacle sucks but there are work arounds that I’m comfortable with:
Overheating => 4K oversampled crop mode ftw
No full HDMI => internal 8K RAW better imho
    Native ND adapter for EF
ISO performance still stellar for 45MP
    45 MP stills for landscapes
    4KLQ good enough for RUclips
    Canon colors
Track DPAF AF is just amazing (Sony too!)
Canon has more interesting cinema line imho
Editing performance won’t be an issue with new Apple ARM laptops (based off iPad Pro). Fully accelerated 10 bit 4:2:2 in h264 and H265.

I bought both and decided to keep the R5 and buy a second body. I shoot primarily weddings and events with it at ISO 10000 or lower and found the Canon to be cleaner with more natural colors in mixed or low light, which I often find myself in. The Sony had some things I preferred also, but on the ones that weighed heavier for my work, the Canon won.
Both of these are great cameras though and you really can't go wrong with either. Buy the one that fits the style of shooting you'll be doing with it.

I am a hobbyist and don't do weddings often. I did one a couple of weekends ago with a Pentax K-1 and a Fuji X-T4 and, frankly, although the newer cameras have nice features, I challenge anyone to show me that Pentax IQ and DR are lagging behind. On the contrary. The newest toy isn't always the best. I don't believe that "if some is good, more is better" popular saying. 😁 A camera is only a tool. Many weddings photographs from a year ago, 5 years ago, 10 years ago, are pretty nice. The newest technology doesn't make better photogs. Or does it!

I came to conclusion that a super detailed image is not always good for "cinematic" picture. My opinion was confirmed after the Brandons Lee review of A7Siii when he told that he reduced a details in post of his A7Siii footage. And his footage was so pleasing and beautiful. So even not the most detailed 4k of A7Siii is enough for me o think.

Exactly ... was about to post the same. If it's more and more crisp it starts to feel like video or a game. I have seen footage with black mist filter (which actually reduces the sharpness and some detail) which looked much more pleasing and has still tons of detail. And nobody crops in when watching a film 😀

It's weird, about 50% of videos show the R5 having better rolling shutter than the A7Siii (Dan Watson and a few others), 50% show the other way. I guess that shows just how close they really are. Pretty good for a 45 MP sensor vs a 12 MP sensor. The A7Siii is probably the only full frame camera that can go toe to toe with the R5 for rolling shutter. That says a lot for how good that Canon sensor tech is.

It is not worth watching such RUclipsr because you never know if he is telling the truth or what he was paid for.

Would love to use the 24-70mm IS for weddings. Went with the a7s iii for my future of pro video. The recording limit is a joke for canon as well. Cancelled my r5 preorder after overheating. It’s ridiculous how it gives warnings for photos. Didn’t expect the IBIS on canon to be so good
