the problem in the R5 at weddings isnt if it overheats at 4k line skipped. Its that after you film a wedding ceremony at soft 4k in a church for an hour. first, you need to restart every 30min, second, after the ceremony is over, you dont have 4k60/120 for the confetti as they walk out and lastly, no backup/dual card recording.
Doesn't matter how long you can record 4k "normal" if you cant shoot 10 seconds of 4k60 during the confetti after shooting 4k normal during a ceremony

Tony, thanks you for the awesome and very balanced review of the 3 systems.
I am an R5 owner and could not be happier with the Camera because it meets MY needs. I will be adding an R6 because again it meets MY needs. The Sony is amazing and anyone should be excited to own it but for me and my Canon glass "investment" it does not make sense. Let's all hope that Canon, Sony, Nikon and all the rest keep upping the ante so we all benefit.

Nice job, but, if you do it all yourself, as I do, you want to record good audio in camera. The Sony doesn't just connect the mic through a hot shoe it (according to Sony), can receive 2x stereo lines through the XLR K3M. But no one has demonstrated that yet!

Good review of the camera capabilities, Tony. I’d love to see a part 2 review where compare the edit ability based on Codecs, 10-bit v 8-bit, file sizes etc - preferably on both Premiere and Fingal Cut Pro. As an aside,I don’t think greater contrast is a plus. Since the old school days of the Canon 5D Mark II, we;ve been reducing the contrast in the cameras settings so we have more to play with in post. Unless you’re shooting raw, stretching out the DR in your NLE can lead to artefacts. the positive is that I think the DR of modern cameras mitigates this somewhat.

There are a ton of comments of here already so I apologize if it’s already been mentioned , but Canon does have an RF 15-35 F2.8L Tony as native glass - I know , I use it with my R and R5 . No native 24mm, but the inexpensive RF35 is fantastic - this lens doesn’t get enough love for how great it is and the price point . I looks like a micro HDMI compared to the RF 50 1.2 , but it’s so affordable , light-weight and does a great job .
I tried the A7RIII for a year and didn’t come to like it ( much like Chelsea’s video ) as I wanted to give it a chance , so I sold my Sony gear and stayed with my Canon stuff .
I’m a photographer first , but so a lot of my own family or church video work . For 2 hours , using an external recorder or output to an external hard drive works great .

A FEW QUESTIONS FOR TONY: Tony, GREAT review, and very thorough. But I'm going to ask you about a few things you didn't touch on that are important to some of us. Here they are:
    1. How good is the APS-C mode on the Sony?
    2. How good is the Sony Stab. with 3rd party, non-electronic lenses?
I DO love shooting video fully manual---and find focus by wire lenses IMPOSSIBLE to use..
Finally, let me say NONE of the reviewers EVER cover the two issues I just posed---yet, there are thousands of us who love shooting fully manual lenses, and love shooting hand held, while using BOTH full frame and APS-C modes. Why are we constantly TOTALLY neglected? Can't you just give those of us who PREFECT shooting mirrorless this way just a few moments of testing and commentary on the results?
    Oh yes, Hey from Texas.

Autofocus has to be utterly dependable as I am a one man show. A flip screen is important to me as I like to be able to check myself as I am filming. I think that's the pragmatic, fact-driven takeaway most pros can/would/do reach quite quickly. The problem is that Canon hyped the crap out of the 8K video and hybrid shooting capabilities, which clearly fall short of the mark due to the overheating. In essence, they're the ones that suggested their sports car would be great for plowing, and so the egg's on their collective face now that the evidence is out there.

If I were only shooting video, I think the A7SIII is the best tool for the job. Of course, if you're only shooting video, you'd then need to ask yourself if a hybrid body is even the right choice to begin with... A cine camera, even a BMPCC 4k or 6k, might be a superior choice. For vlogging, I think the A7SIII is kind of overkill. Maybe if you vlog and do pro video work as well it would be a good choice.
Honestly the R5 is the only professional level hybrid here. That means it can shoot stills that you could use for any commercial purpose, weddings, etc., AND it shoots professional quality video. The R6 is pretty much in the same category although some would argue that 20MP isn't enough for professional stills going into 2021. The A7SIII cannot shoot stills at a high enough resolution to be considered a professional stills camera. Some clients won't even hire you if you're only shooting 12MP.

Wires breaking inside the mic (I’m looking at you, Rode Video Micro) is a fun surprise. Batteries losing their charge because you left them in a cold car overnight, or suddenly discovering that one leaked inside a light and not having a way to clean it. That said, I think that 12MP is more than enough if all your pictures ends up on social media (i.e you never print/ no magazine). So if you need/want the ultimate camera for vlogging and you also want to take professional pictures for your social media/thumbnail then the A7Siii is a really good hybrid.

    • @pgsanta
      @pgsanta 4 года назад +2

@@JetBen555 It depends. The notion that everyone is just fine using 12MP for social media posts really applies to the aggregate (the common users). The vast majority of "influencers" are posting stuff made with professional tools that allow them to work easily in post to create what they want to... these people are not using 12MP cameras, nor will they, because it would be an incredible limitation. Yes, for certain things it'd be ok... but not in general, for that level of content creation.

The R5 is the best for stills, and the R6 probably the best all-rounder.
The advantage I see with Sony is a two body set up where the A7S3 excels at video, and then another body like the A7(R)3 for stills. Not cheap of course, but for a pro I reckon this would take out any 'guess work'.

@Todd Stoilov Confirmed. Part of it has to do with the fact that the SD card is just so much slower; you’d have to wait until they go to dual CFexpress, or introduce firmware that limits dual recording to specific outputs (can’t do the 8k to an SD).

Hi Cap'n Canon. Nobody cares about magnifying a video 400% to see which one is a tiny bit sharper. Sharpening can always be adjusted in post. We are looking at the overall image and usability of the camera. This is something that you 'might not' understand if you aren't regularly working artist who answers to your clients. They don't care about that hair-splitting pixel peeping bullsh*t. They just don't want your camera to stop working after 30min or an hour. The superior dynamic range of the Sony has a MUCH larger effect on the look and feel of the image. Reliable 4k60/120, and mind blowing 1080p 240 has a much larger impact on a client shoot, and is not a gimmick like 8k. What if your SD card or expensive-ass CF card gets corrupted during your R5 shoot? The a7siii writes to up to 3 different sources at once. I could go on and on about the pros of Sony vs the cons of Canon, but the INTERNET has already done that for me. Keep commenting. Maybe you actually put a dent in the bad Canon press. Good luck
