    • @MrPhilbautista
      @MrPhilbautista 4 года назад +3

      The mirrorless cameras they mention have animal eye AF. The D850 doesn't even have eye AF. You may think it's not a big deal but in their line of business, having eyes in sharp focus matters, specially when you're cropping in order to zoom. I'm not saying the D850 AF sucks, or that DSLR AF sucks, but if there's something better that improves your work flow and productivity, and you can afford to adopt it, why not go with it? There will always be a market for used gear to defray the cost of buying the new gear and, if it's used in your line of business, can always be written off as a business expense.

      Makes sense for them. A camera body will last years, but you can only come up with so many tips and tricks videos that aren't generic.
      Switching around lets them make comparisons that go beyond having a camera to evaluate for a week.
      But, sure, you take a huge hit every time you sell your gear, and of course you need to develop new muscle memories. It isn't practical.
      You gotta do what works for what you're doing. There is no one right camera for everybody. Nor is there only one way to go about having a gear roadmap.
      Anybody buying gear of any kind needs to keep in mind that reviewers aren't exactly the same as them. Just look at cell phones. Those reviewers probably switch phones once a month. I couldn't imagine the hassle of that...

      too many of the pro influencers, are so full of it. they try to keep others down by GAS shaming them, and all the while they don't shoot anything without the absolute best newest gear. all these "pros" would fail with old cameras. Gear does Matter, it makes a huge difference if image quality is one of your highest priorities. if not, you can shoot with any camera and be satisfied with photoshop fixed grainy low light blurry pics. the top gear reduces those considerably, so it DOES matter.

    • @cdavid119
      @cdavid119 4 года назад +5

      @@LadyFairChildVideo I don't think that anyone is under the impression that new gear doesn't change anything. "Gear doesn't matter" more refers to, if you are terrible on basic systems you are likely going to be terrible on new systems. Be it for lack of care or lack of practice, that is based on the person. You might suck less with new gear that helps you through it, but if you use what you have and use it a lot you WILL get better. I promise you that anyone worth their salt can use any of the newest cameras for their work and get top quality photos, but preferences exist, and I think that it is wrong to fault those who use these systems to make their living for changing platforms based on these preferences.

    • @MichaelNNY
      @MichaelNNY 4 года назад +2

      When a professional says gear doesnt matter, they are trying to keep beginners from being intimidated by the science and the choices. Obviously a smart phone is going to take crappy pictures compared to a 45mp monster. But thats not the point. Its a process, a journey, and a beginner might be so overwhelmed but the choices and complexity and price of something like an R5 they might stay away from the art. I myself was a photography major in college back in the 80s with a Rolleiflex I worked all summer to afford, but lost my love of photography for a long time. Im getting back into it now, I have a Sony A6 and might upgrade slightly to a full frame camera, but even with my background Im finding it a little hard to understand everything. It’s interesting that Chelsea promotes Toni’s book suggesting that it can save pros thousands of $$ presumably by helping them choose the right equipment the first time. Maybe she should read it. The simplest answer is that Chelsea likes gear, and that’s ok, many photos have g.a.s. and that’s part of the enjoyment many get from the photographic process. One thing for certain, the Nikon D850 which she moved away from (to a degree at least) 1.5 years ago is just as capable of meeting the most demanding and discerning professional photographer’s needs as either of the models she moved away to since. It would seem this whole gear switching and justification exercise on display here brings little real value to new photographers other than to demonstrate the wrong way to select equipment. Fortunately few have the resources to go through this flip flop of equipment.

Not only is the UI easy to use, BUT, they don't change it just because ... because ... So my R5 will be most loved when it arrives.

    Most pro photographers would just rent a new camera and lens for a specific project, not change complete systems during a pandemic when jobs are scarce or non-existent. The Canon R5 is an especially bad choice now, as they have crippled their camera with overheating timers that shut the entire camera down for extended periods of time. Until Canon comes clean with the real reason their cameras "overheat," I would stay miles away from this camera/system/brand. Nothing worse than a camera that shuts off during a professional shoot, even if it is currently just using video. If the Canon sensor is that susceptible to overheating that they shut it off after 20 minutes, how long will it last in day to day use? Workarounds and Scotch tape are not professional solutions.

Been shooting with Canon since the early 2000 and I've spend as little as $250 for a camera body (M2) and as much as $1,600 (6D). The advantage with Canon is they offer a big range of cameras and lenses at all price points. No other camera brand at this point has as big a range. Here's my thinking - My A7, FF is 61MP (+Rolling shutter if silent) & 98-280mm, but with a press of a button, I can switch it to shoot Crop (27MP) - still rolling shutter if silent, but I get 147-420mm with f4 throughout. What happens next? -I can switch to my A9 which starts at 400-1200mm with f 13. So far I found myself shooting more with the later (I shoot almost exclusively wildlife, which for me also means mostly - almost exclusively hand-held). Funny enough, I get better results trying to maintain focus in 1200mm than in the original 600mm (the focus hunts less for some reason). I have to see in the near future what happens, when switching and shooting with my A7, but from a shelter, with a table tripod, I got very nice results using it. High dynamics in terms of changing the range with a flick of a button. By the way, I do have a button for flicking between the e-shutter and mechanical one.

    Excellent video Chelsea!! More like this please!
    I don't think you ever said whether you have ever shot with Canon as your primary system. As an EOS R owner, along with other Canon bodies, do check out the "touch shutter" feature if you haven't already. It's really handy when using a tripod and long exposures. Use it with the self timer. Just touch the area on the screen that you want it to focus on and it will AF and take the photo. Simple enough but if you are using a long telephoto and tripod adding the timer will delay the shutter and give it time to stabilize from any movement you induce my touching the screen. You can use touch shutter with manual focus too. Don't forget the focus assist when using it in manual AF. You also can wifi it to your phone, pc or tablet to do the same things I have mentioned. There are options to extend the battery life by slowing down the EVF refresh, screen / EVF dimming and time to sleep. I think you will enjoy the R5 for what you want to use it for and yes, it will fit your hand very well.

      David Ramos Of course she can...my comment isn’t about money. You can purchase every system on the market and use them interchangeably if you wish (indeed, if her and Toney’s instagrams are any indication, they both continue to use the Nikon for wildlife after “switching” from something else. The unrealistic part is that the camera is your tool. It is a complex tool that takes a long time to master. Can you quickly make every adjustment using your muscle memory to capture the shot or do you have to think about how to get the job done. Do you know precisely what kind of shot you are going to get based on how you set it up for the conditions you are shooting in. Speed is particularly important for wildlife and action photography. This is hard fought experience, skill, and knowledge you get with your tool over a long period of time. Photographers don’t quickly give that up because there’s a cool new feature on a completely different system. The average person should know that and that “switching” is more the exception than the norm in the real photography world. By picking a good system and sticking with it, you will become an infinitely better photographer than by constantly switching systems for the latest cool feature. I also understand that a lot of youtube engagement is driven by talking about the latest gear, so “switching” makes a ton of sense to drive that engagement. This is their business, it’s how they make their money. They need to strategically plan their content to maximize viewership and engagement, even if that content doesn’t reflect the real world perfectly.

    As an A7R3 owner, I understand the handling dislikes. After decades on the Eos system, i didn’t rate ‘handling’ that highly on my ‘needs’ list....until I started using the A7R3! I largely solved the holding / grip issue by adding a RRS base plate, which extended the grip just long enough to make the physical handling issue mostly go away for me. I did get and try the Sony vertical grip before I tried the RRS base plate, but the v.grip lost you one of the advantages of the Sony body - it’s more compact dimensions. The RRS base plate gave me a good compromise.
    The space between grip and lenses, especially the faster, larger diameter lenses, was an issue, but it has been something I’ve adapted to. It’s not what I’d call ideal, and it was an issue when I first started using the A7R3, but over time, it’s become less of an issue, I’ve adapted to it.
    Physically, I find the exp comp dial annoying, it really needs a lock on it, it seems to always be on something other than ‘0’ when I pull it out of my bag and start shooting. It’s so annoying, that I’ve started mainly shooting in Manual exposure mode to effectively by-pass the exp.comp dial effects.
    The menus. I thought I’d adapt to these over time, but the truth is, I’ve not. I still find them frustrating. It’s not just the pages where things seem oddly located, it’s more than that, it’s somehow the way you scroll through the pages & top menus and enter menu items and change settings....I always seem to get it wrong somehow and it takes me multiple attempts to change or set something up. They are a pain, and I get how they could drive someone away from Sony now, but for me, the camera still does loads of other stuff right (sensor, res, dynamic range, noise, shadow recovery, AF etc the really important stuff) that I put up with its few short comings. I live in hope that Sony introduces a firmware update for the A7R3 & 4 and other recent Sony models and give us the option of trying the new menu system from the A7S3 - that would be neat if they did that.

      I can only see the "benefit" in one switch, you buy a body or two - several lenses and after a few years you know what your needs are what gear you need and what you want to work with (work as in hobbyist) - ignoring for a fact that the EF to RF adapter exists, if i'd sell all my EF gear i might be able to break even on 2-3 RF lenses and only had to pay for the body - or vice versa... you get what i mean. But once you have your 2-4 workhorse lenses the next switch gets super pricey unless you "downgrade" (say suddenly you only do street so a Fujifilm XF something something would be sufficient)

    Chelsea, Great choice ! Did almost the same switch. After 35+ years being a Canon Fan / User, I was very eager to change my Canon DSLR (1DX) because of the weight. After introduction of the EOS R and reading the tons of reviews, I was quite disappointed by it's specs and usebility. In december 2017 I switched to Sony (A9) and went to the Photokina to have a look and feel of the EOS R. I had a discussion with a Canon Rep. talking about the EOS R and it's flaws, so I waited and read the rumors about an upcoming Mirrorless that would overrule Sony. To shorten a long story. I sold my Sony A9 and two Topnotch GM lenses for a bargain price and bought myself the Canon EOS R5 with additional Grip and RF lens 24-70mm/f2.8 IS USM. Although it's overheating problems with Video, I mainly shoot Stills (Portraits, Wild Life, Landscape) And I am very happy to be with Canon again.

    👍🏼 My thoughts exactly! I don't care about the 8k 🎥 video just yet. I'm still happy with 1080p /60. It will be a nice upgrade to shoot 4k/60, but for weddings 4k/30 is fine and 4k60 is great for my vlogs. I read that you can shoot 4 k/60 using the Atomos Ninja external recorder without any overheating. That would make a perfect wedding video recorder. Or sharper video I could do 4kHQ/30 with no limits. But here's the thing. You're asking yourself extra work, expense, and time to shoot longer videos in 8k/30. You're much better off with an actual cinema camera or regular video camera for videos. Taylor Jackson says he shoots short video clips with his camera (1080p/30). Those clips add up to not more than 10 or 20 minutes max. It saves his clients money not having to hire a film crew which is very expensive.
    📸 45MP photos are what I've really been looking for in a wildlife/portrait camera. I can't afford the Phase One 150MP camera so the Canon R5 fits my budget and has a megapixel that is manageable on my computer while still looks good with wide-format printing. The animal eye autofocus is a game-changer in my book.
    I agree with Chelsea about the menu system. It's just over the top. Canon's lower-end cameras and cute little picture menus that guide you through the settings but are limit to just basic stuff. Canon just needs to find a better way to display their menus so you can go level deep when you need to and simple levels for just shooting. Maybe more like offering more programmable modes. Yeah, that would work! C1-3 just isn't enough. C-1-20 would be ideal.
    I'm excited about the 🔋🔋 battery grip with built-in super wi-fi. It will totally eliminate the need for dual card slots. Just wi-fi all your shots to a wireless SSD drive, laptop, smartphone. Then you can have your laptop, smartphone, and Canon's cloud move them all to your home/office computer ready and waiting. With FTPS or SFTP you can know your files are protected.
    I'm really excited to get the new R5! I think it's going to be my main camera. Might even get a second one as a backup/secondary camera. :D

    People that are complaining about the cost/loss taken when switching gear systems must not have other expensive hobbies. Hobbyist dirt bike rider/racers can jump to a new bike every 1-3 years. The bikes can easily be in the $9k-$12k relm. They rarely make you any money but instead can earn you plastic trophies and doctor bills. Haha. Their resale isn't great, they break or parts just plain wear out. It is what they (myself included) enjoy doing. It brings them happiness. Does it make the reality it is expensive to switch camera systems? No. Try and hold back on the jealousy and envy if you don't find it feasible to do the same for yourself. Do what feels right for your own situation. Do I have the R5 on order? No. I am sitting here with my 5Div and 7Dii content at the moment. The I wasn't interested in the R/RP release. The R5/R6 have got my attention but I am not the sort to buy something when it first comes out. To each their own. Shoot pics, grow your craft, and enjoy doing it. I have spent way too much money to not enjoy taking pictures with any set-up.

      When I was new to the camera world, I watched a lot of channels like Tony and Chelsea's to gain insight into what I should get. Several of these channels told people like me that "gear doesn't matter -- it's composition, lighting, getting the shot...blah...blah...blah." Yet, several years on, and I am no longer a neophyte, and I realised that gear does matter. If it didn't matter, these people would be out of a job, and they wouldn't keep making countless videos comparing one camera system to the other, along with their lenses and accessories to determine which was better. Here is my humble advice for any neophytes who might read this seeking to become a photographer or to make videos. Listen to people like Tony and Chelsea. Weigh the pros and cons of what they're saying with what you can afford at the moment, along with the objective you have in mind -- hobbyist, casual shooter/vlogger or seeking to become a professional. When you finally decide upon what you're going to get, learn to use the gear you have. Also, invest in high quality native glass for the system you have chosen -- 24mm (wide angle for landscape); 50mm (for portraits/street photography); 70-200mm (for portraits, etc.); 200-400mm or above (for wildlife/sports) and 90mm macro lens for those who love macro or food photography. Note: I would advise that you sacrifice and get the widest aperture in each category of lens I've mentioned. Yes, they are more expensive, but you won't regret the investment. You can have them for a long long time, if you take care of your gear. These will have a higher resale/trade-in value should you decide to move to another system, or just to get better glass, eventually. Whichever system makes your life easier, more productive and your experience enjoyable, that's the camera system you should back.

    I totally understand why you would want to get rid of the Sony A7 RIII. I switched from a Canon 5D MkIII to the A7RIII in 2018 and I am constantly cursing at it every time I shoot. I shoot landscapes and the A7RIII will begin to malfunction at temperatures below 40 degrees (f). The menu is horrible, the build is delicate and fragile compared to to the 5D MkIII, and the controls are not intuitive. It also overheats when simply shooting astro photography so I have to swap batteries. But it does produce beautiful images which is why I've stuck with it - until now. I'm also switching to the Canon EOS R5 (if I can find one in stock). Thanks for the video.
