It isn't the defending without fouling, it's the defending without getting called for fouls they do commit, while the teams they play don't get that same benefit. Several trips last night you could plainly see Davis with his off hand around Jokic's waist but never get called for the foul. It's a foul that most players get called on.

But that's not in any way the point here in this particular game. The point is that the Nuggets got 6 free throw attempts. Zero in the second half. That's beyond outrageous in a very physical game. It's actually impossible unless officials are completely incompetent like they were yesterday. Jokic should have had 10 by himself. We didn't need a season long trend analysis. Man... your take at the end was absolutely horrible and an extreme gaslight. Stating that the Lakers are top 3 in drawing fouls and not fouling does not prove your agenda. There is zero explanation for the Nuggets having zero free throw attempts in the 2nd half. There is zero explanation why the 17th ranked defense is only 3rd in defending without fouls. There is zero explanation why the 2x MVP, soon to be 3x MVP, got 2 free throw attempts with AD bear hugging him all game off of 23 shot attempts. There is zero explanation why the Lakers who had 54 points in the paint on 38 drives got 19 free throws compared to the Nuggets 64 points in the paint on 30 drives who only got 6 free throws.
Your entire point this video was how the Lakers didn't execute, how they got lazy, how they had mental break downs. You can't tell me that a team that had that poor of a lapse didn't commit fouls during the entire 2nd half when that team played their worst basketball.
In one of your clips where Jokic drove to the basket, made contact with Reaves and made the bucket... that exact play was called a foul when Lebron drove into Jokic (Lebron initiated contact and Jokic didn't even touch Lebron outside of the initiation).
You are missing the entire free throw disparity point entirely and are coming across as a homer. As someone as intelligent as yourself, who breaks down a lot of film, I feel like you can do a better job in removing your LA bias and actual look at the facts instead of some crappy graph that shows historic free throw disparities. We are talking about the Lakers this year and last year. Not comparing them to other historic teams. A team that ranks 15th in offense and 17th in defense should not have such a large free throw disparity night in and night out.

Teams take a lot of threes and jumpshots against them, this isn’t rocket science. When they deal with speed, they just fold most of the time. No one fouls, they just give up a layup. Also look at rim frequency and efficiency.

@HoopsTonight The issue regarding the FTs was not about differential overall (that is a lazy argument that losers use I agree) but just how Nuggets are officiated in general, including when playing the Lakers. Nuggets are 9th in the NBA when it comes to defending without fouling so your argument that they make too many fouls is just untrue. A team that has absolute elite post presence in Jokic, monsters at pressuring the rim like Gordon, Watson even Braun, as well as excellent shot makers, is 26th!! in the NBA when it comes to drawn fouls. That is just absurd. A look at Jokic's body throughout the game is enough to see what kind of whistle he gets while he is constantly mauled. Even in Game 1 on Saturday, AD got away with so much shit, grabbing around the waste, and stuff. On the other hand the calls that non-stars like Reeves and such get on the other side are just, well supersoft... I like the physical game just want the whistle to be at least close to equal, especially when playing at home. And it has never been when it comes to Nuggets. Jokic is a superstar who gets by far the least amount of calls. Fan of the show btw, keep up the good work!

AD especially flops/grifts so much on shot trying to draw fouls that it is noticeable in almost every game I happen to catch the Lakers in - mainly the playoffs and GSW games. Now, is it a net negative? That'd require some deep-dive analysis that neither you nor I would want to do but just watching the game it is very noticeable from AD and not as glaring from LeBron likely because he can get back on defense quicker.

It's a huge problem that has plagued the league for years now. Players and teams are arbitrarily chosen to receive more or less calls almost completely by chance. Certainly not for basketball reasons. The same level of contact is called differently depending on the player and the team. That's BS and should not ever ever happen. Foul baiting should not be a viable tactic. The Lakers coasted to the wcf last year solely off of free throws. They weren't a particularly great all around defense. They weren't a great offense. They're not very talented. Literally, it was just getting spotted 15-20 extra points every game.

Over the past two years, the Lakers have +1000 free-throw differential, which leads the league. That is 700 more than the team in the two spot. But from the two spot to the bottom of the league, there is only a 600 gap, from +300 to -300. That is more than some coincidence or statistical anomaly. It's clear and obvious the treatment they get.

Dwight Howard was on that Charlotte team, and yes, hack-a-Howard was still a strategy being employed at that time which explains their high FT rate. In fact, Howard's teams during his prime were always at or near the top of FT rate, not because of the refs, but because of the deliberate strategies of the opposing teams. Howard accounts for most of those prior FT discrepancy leaders. The current Lakers are absolutely an outlier when you account for hack-a-Howard.

Jokic does have possessions where he does but for the most part the Nuggets focus on making shots. There's plenty of guys in the league that foul bait. I personally don't like to see parietal hunting contact but I understand why players do it. My issue is if you're one of those players then I don't want to see you crying because someone does the same thing to you (foul baiting). As for this game of y'all pay attention you'll notice Davis, Reaves, Russell, and Prince hunting contact but most Nuggets players are hunting easy shots.

Good takes overall.... but you may be off when it comes to the foul disparity or perhaps I am. I watched the game without bias and the majority of fouls called on the Nuggets just flat out weren't fouls (obviously this is common, and you're going to get some bad calls, but it was excessive in this game and lopsided (within the first few minutes I could see that it was going to be a very strict reffed game, which it was, but Denver seemed to get the brunt by a pretty significant margin). I don't have a dog in the fight and of course they're just as likely to have bad officiated games against the Lakers or anyone, so it has nothing to do with a given team getting favoritism.
Many weren't the type of foul calls that could go either way... there just simply wasn't contact on any level. In the 4th quarter there were either 3 or 4 foul calls on Denver in a row that weren't fouls.
In the event you happen to watch tape on the game if you haven't already, I challenge you to look a little closer into the foul calls and see if you still think it was. I may do so myself just to make sure that I'm not embellishing. It's possible that a portion of them were the Lakers on fast breaks and driving the ball that drew the non foul foul calls. They still of course would be bad calls, but perhaps the Lakers did a better job of utilizing the bad reffing precedence that the refs had set early on. There weren't too many instances of fouls that weren't called from what I recall, but was it somewhat equal to the opposing side.
In general there are few things that are as inconsistent as NBA reffing and pretty much every game is reffed different. The one thing that's perhaps good is the reffing style typically remains consistent for a given game and you can usually tell early on how a game will be reffed. The thing I don't like about modern day reffing in particular is they make it difficult for players to contest shots. As a result players can get paranoid to contest shots so they do the half ass arm raise thing and they don't jump with the shooter (beyond protecting against the fake) in or around the paint because they know it will automatically in some games trigger a foul. It makes the game and the defender look really pathetic. I assume most of us wish they'd allow the players to play stronger on the ball defense. They of course allow a lot of physicality off the ball, but on the ball it can be ridiculously delicate, but I digress. It wasn't just that game, but I'm finding myself constantly frustrated with the refs anymore. I guess I just have to accept it and get over it.

@gabehernandez538 to your point about the illegal screen, I think he was technically correct that his rolling to the basket early was actually inadvertent contact and technically not a foul but I had no problem with that one personally. It's understandable. The refs did miss a few for AD and Lebum though, and also missed Jokic committing a couple offensive fouls as well. That analysis is based on reviewing the game, not on free throw disparity numbers. It doesn't matter which team shot what number of free throws, it matters what team got away with more fouls than the other. If anything, that was Denver. But they're also just the better team and it's weak to try to blame everything on the refs. Nobody's getting screwed, the Lakers got fouled more than they fouled, that's it.

Id like to call Jason's FTA argument bad faith -- because it is -- but more accurately, its just a stupid argument that he's making. Sure, bad defenders get blown past and dont contest shots well, but they try to make up for it by grabbing, over-committing, and being out of position to guard soundly. They dont just flail around like a matador giving guys free lanes. You can go back to last nights game and see when AD could do literally nothing to stop Jokic when he had low postion and would just grab Jokic around the waist. This would occur right in front of the baseline ref and he just wouldn't call it. Of course you can use a "how much a team doesn't foul" stat as supposed "proof" of a team not fouling, but it's a logical fallacy since the refs aren't calling the fouls they actually commit. 🙄

6 fts for Denver, 0 in the second half with a completely gassed and undisciplined Lakers squad does not add up. Lakers defenders were holding, grabbing, committing various contact that was being called against Denver on one end but not against them on the other. This is the type of thing you see that results in these massive discrepancies over two years.
Nuggets still win and have won battling the discrepancies in each of these matchups, and I tend to agree that blaming officials is a loser mentality, but it’s also a little disingenuous to not acknowledge that there’s likely an officiating bias going on here, even if only minor and not some super conspiracy.

Terrible analysis. First play, bron is looking at Jokic because he’s backside help and mpj rolls over but bron still provides a a great close out but great shot by MPJ . AD doesn’t flop . The ball was literally knocked out of his hands backwards . During the transition defense , no one is suppose to have anyone . Gotta stop the ball and pick up whoever is the biggest threat . The guy double team jokic because you would rather give up Jackson shooting a 3 than an easy 2 to jokic . The next play levron has Murray on him and he just misses the shot . It’s happens . Terrible analysis of the game . The lakers played horrible defense but it was the way they were defending the pick and roll .

I've been thinking a lot about foul baiting costing your team, especially when the whistle gets tighter in the playoffs. I watched the Mavs-CLippers game, and i can't remember who was defending but Harden had the ball and the guy fell back flailing wildly trying to draw. There was no whistle and Harden had a full 2 seconds to set up for a three, which he made.

The problem with your argument is that we aren’t talking about only this version of the lakers. It’s been like this for my lifetime. The lakers and Celtics are the teams the league can benefit most from being in the finals EVERY year. And you unknowingly helped legitimize the theory by mentioning the Celtics!

Hey Jason, love the playoff coverage thus far. I’d say the free throw disparity is more of a double edge sword rather than a net negative. It usually is beneficial and I’ll explain. The foul calls slowing the game down plays to their strengths and roster construction. Older superstar playing with a lot of size around him. Keeps them in the game endurance wise and makes it that much harder for younger, more athletic, faster paced teams to go on runs and play their game. Ie sac plays fast and doesn’t foul often. Without the calls the lakers would look just as old and ineffective as the warriors did in the play in game. The only team capable of beating this nuggets team in a series from the last 15 years is the 2016-2019 warriors

Great analysis, respect! One missing point, though: the TOs - LeBron 7, DEN starting 5 had ONE! Team-wise it was 12 to 4!
D'Lo and AR didn't deliver and that was a real bummer as it was clear Denver's supporting cast is superior and Lakers one literally had to deliver... and that also caused LeBron's frustration and lack of motifivation/energy/focus later on, so he was the catalyst for their loss.
AD's 3s were a total miscalculation - high risk and no reward... He should have been smart enough not to take them.
Very disappointing game, but in the end, the better team simply won.

The Lakers didn't "barbecue their lead away". The Nuggets simply periodically stepped on the gas.
    Nasty work:
Playing LeBron James 40+min at this point in his career.
    Nastier work:
Arguing against the Free Throw disparity. The disparity is not the issue. The issue is that the Lakers get FAR MORE free throws than the Nuggets, despite both teams shooting relatively few 3s and scoring the bulk of their points very close to the rim:
    Lakers
    3 attempts: 31.4 per game (28th)
    Restricted area: 25.6 (18th)
    Paint: 19.6 (6th)
    Mid-Range: 10.7 (6th)
    Free throws: 24.2 *(2nd)*
    Nuggets
    3 attempts: 31.2 per game (30th)
    Restricted area: 27.7 (10th)
    Paint: 17.9 (15th)
    Mid-Range: 10.7 (6th)
Free throws: 19.9 per game *(29th)*
The problem here is not that the Lakers have a better Free Throw disparity, that is explained by them getting a lot of them and not fouling a lot. The actual problem here is that the Nuggets get very few of them, despite the very similar scoring metrics around the basket. Jokic in particular simply does not get a superstar whistle.
In fact, he _has_ received a superstar whistle _once_ in his career so far. And that was during this season against the GSW at the Christmas game. You know the one, where Steve Kerr was moaning about foul baiting after the game. It stood out so much (and of course had a lot of eyeballs on it due to it being a nationally televised game) precisely because it was the _one_ time Jokic received a superstar whistle.

That is why during their 2020 run, Rondo was their 3rd best player. Because as soon as Lebron take a rest, Rondo eventually filled that gap of game management that Lebron was so good at and only Rondo can match that. And the great thing about Rondo during that time in LA, he improved so much his 3 point game where you left him wide open, you will pay for it. And on top of that, hey was so lazer focus on the defensive end with his match up with Murray. He outclass Murray in their matchup.

Mailbag: I've mentioned a few times in the mailbag that I use a methodology related to the traditional statistics to rate the overall contribution of players. I find it to be very revealing how "great-looking" performances can actually be much less than great. I used my more in-depth rating to evaluate LeBron's performance for Game 1. The more in-depth rating includes the Defensive Rating and True Shooting percentage in the calculation. Everything is based on the per-100 possessions statistics. (I calculated this value in Game 1 based on the Pace and LeBron' minutes played). Here's how LeBron's Game 1 performance compared to his career and 2023-24 regular season ratings:
+ LeBron's career value using my methodology is 63.5.
+ LeBron's value for this season was 60.1.
+ LeBron's value for Game 1 of the series against the Nuggets was 45.0.
It was dramatically lower! Yeah, his general stats were good; however, my methodology gives us a much clearer picture. I find that using my methodology provides a way to compare players fairly with one another (and to their own typical standards).
The Mailbag question is: "How do you (Jason) evaluate the overall player contribution based on statistics? Do you have a methodology for using a combination of defined statistics to evaluate player performances? Mine uses the traditional statistics in a way that directly relates to the points scored.

DLO had a bad game but it kinda PMO when lebron started going off at him when he turned the ball over in transition. At the time, that was his 1st turnover. Meanwhile, bron had already had 3 and was throwing lazy passes all night. Showing up your teammates like that can be what contributes to them having a bad game.

When you simply call it defending without fouling you are assuming your conclusion. There are certain things I’d like you to address. 1) at least half the time when LeBron drives, he lowers his shoulder and dislodges the defender. It’s a clear offensive foul but is never called, when it does get called against Laker opponents. 2) LeBron almost never sets a legal screen. He’s almost always moving, or throws his hip into the defender or hits the defender with an elbow as they come through the screen. Again, it’s almost never called. 3) in last nights game look at the and 1 that Reaves got on his nice little floater. Compare it to any number of possessions by Denver where nothing was called (and yeah, one example doesn’t make a trend, but I see this all the time with the Lakers, without regard for their opponents.).
Take a look at what happened with the Lakers right after the all-star break when the refs swallowed their whistles. They went into a slump. Then, all of a sudden, the free throw differential went up again for them, so that in 60% of their wins the margin of victory was less than the differential. It raises suspicion, and especially when you compare that stretch in terms of FTAs to other parts of the season.

You think we can't tell when a game is not called fairly? Laker fans/analysis explanation is the same "defend without fouling"😂 😂! You need the refs to make the foul call!!
