On their parents - I know that parents whose children kill their sibling/s sometimes (often?) seek to maintain a relationship with their surviving child. It's fine they wanted to support his defence, imo. They wanted at least for him to have somewhat of a decent life. But they shamed and blamed their dead daughter for her death at the hands of her brother. That is vile and not understandable at all.

Japanese judicial system seems messed up to me. I feel for Azumi. She didn't get justice. 12 years is a joke. I still think about the most horrific case I've ever come across... Junko. She didn't get justice either. It boils my blood these monsters are walking around free in the world.
Just read up on the Junko case and its absolutely sickening what happened to her I couldn’t believe it.
It sure is. They'll throw the book at people for stupid crimes like one actor for smoking some weed and yet scumbags like this don't face justice. The japanese justice system really need to get it in order, not like I should be talking though because the U.S court system is terrible too lol.

One of the most saddest and sadistic stories I heard. She died a long awful death then proceeded to be chopped and shredded apart by the hands of her own sibling just to have the justice system do jack shit in punishing him and on top of that her parents not even caring. Damn that is so foul, poor girl.
‼️I agree! I do not believe his story that she showed up in his room to argue with him at all. If anything I think he S assaulted her and then k*lled her and mutilated her to hide that fact. She didn't provoke him (not that it would justify what he did even if she had) and I 1000% believe he's lying.. The fact he kept her panties as a trophy makes me believe he will become (or already is) a serial killer. Taking a trophy is something serial killers do, not something people who snap and kill someone in the heat of anger do. There are plenty of cases where someone actually killed in anger and it's unheard of to take a trophy. It's behavior exclusive to a certain type of segguxally motived killer.
A lot of crime goes unreported in Japan from what I’ve read . So the statistics are skewed . Woman don’t report assaults and I’m sure police do their share of twisting stories to downplay crimes.
Women don't report, plus they are growing up in a society where even assault, fondling or pressured sex is banalised.
I remember reading Japanese female teenager magazines and honestly, it was disgusting. One example: this girl went to hang out with two of her seniors, they went to chill at the beach, they were coming back in the evening by car, they had played hard all day so the girl falls asleep. She wakes up with the driver on the backseat, fondling her breasts. While describing her story, she comments "He deserved to be slapped, no ? (lol)" and despite not thinking this is okay, she continues her story saying that because they're her seniors, if she were to try to refuse it'd be really troublesome so instead she thought to herself "Ah, well !" and let them both do her, in turn. That was the story of how she lost her virginity.
The whole magazines were filled with banalised hypersexualisation and stories of abuses, and it was just all so normal... Very disturbing to read.
and then they wonder why young women doesn't want to get married or have any children there!

@@numetalhistorian issei Sagawa didn't get the death penalty because of the French government's inactions, not the Japanese. The crime was committed in PARIS NOT JAPAN. the Japanese government wanted to pursue but couldn't go ahead without the case files that France didn't want to share. And because it had happened in a foreign country, there is no reason for Japan to even be interested but they were. There's a point to be made about violence against women and how it is overlooked, but you chose poorly with the case you chose.

Yep, nothing wrong with having your children taking over your businesses, but not considering your children's own ambitions and blinded by their own nepotism caused all of this and is rampant in Japan and some cases in the world, and the parents were vile towards their daughter and not considered her own ambitions, if they were more lenient and respected their daughter's and their kids ambitions, this wouldn't happened, and if Azumi did not returned, none of this would of happen, so yeah

They hired the best lawyers to defend him because, I guess, they would be ashamed to have a child in prison so they wanted him to get a lenient sentence, but those exact actions, turning their back on Azumi and sticking by their monster childs side, is what makes them the most shameful in everyone elses mind.
they are willing to sink money in to him after he killed someone. not before when he was obviously slow and troubled. but maybe the doctors there dont believe in diagnosing mental health, they only see them as lazy. so it wouldn't have helped anyway.

Had it ended differently and had Azumi murdered her brother in pure self defence, would her family have stood behind her in court? Since we all know the answer to that question, I think that "a safe place to live" must be redefined when it comes to repressive, toxic traditional societies. Expecting to be honoured does not give parents the right to destroy their children's lives.

One in particular, the rape and torture and kidnapping and holding prisoner of a girl by 4 guys (and raped by dozens) I still can't absorb fully. Everything they did to her seems impossible...I would think a horror movie was ridiculous if that many means of torture were used.

We don't know at all what the answer to that question is. Everyone is removing the humanity of the parents over the skewed traditionalist message of the video.
They may of defended their son because he is their son. They may of defended him because they refuse to abandon him. They may of defended him because they were simply still in shock at the absurdness of the crime and hadn't fully taken in exactly what their son has done to their family. Japan is "safe" but if you really look into crime and the system here, you'll find that a lot of the time, criminals are let go with warnings. For example, two men broke into a news woman's house. The police let the two men go since they were "just being dumb". The woman even had to release a public apology. Hard to say the crime is low when cases are dropped left and right.
Yup, and the Yakuza crimes that go "undetected" as well. I don't really trust Japan's definition of crime when they turn a blind eye to so many obvious ones.

Thank you for saying the obvious. Just because a lie is sold to you, does not mean you can use your own mind to really dig into the truth. With heinous crimes being given light sentences, you better believe other less offensive crimes get a slap on the hand. So the selling point of Japan is safety but in reality it breeds evil monsters who are roaming free every day, every where.

I know that it's not to be taken as hard evidence, but I think even anime has inadvertently made "light"/fun of how crime is handled. Many anime would have somebody being taken to the station to be questioned because of a crime, but nothing substantial happens to the offender. Yes, anime is just cartoons.....but it may be reflective of what commonly happens.

Sadly, it is pretty obvious that Yuki probably had undiagnosed learning disabilities which would not be good for the family so was probably not explored. The pressure on Japanese children by their parents even if they live outside of Japan is often the cause of mental health struggles, substance abuse and resentment. The sentence he got is a travesty of justice!
Wouldn't be surprised. Japan has a big stigmatisation of mental health issues, so in general Japan doesn't diagnos people very often.

You’d hate to hear about the case of Qandeel Baloch in Pakistan. Her brother killed her in honour as she was an influencer and the parents still are by his side and only upset because they can’t leech off her earnings anymore.

The pilot episode for King of the Hill really nailed this issue.
Hank, although uncomfortable, tells his son that he "loves him no matter what he does." This is the best mentality, because it allows your children to thrive and be happy as their own person. Your child is not actually your property, they are their own people, don't repress them.
You don't have to repress them, but at the same time spoiled children have the mentally they can do what they please, and you're "required" to support them no matter what.

There have been other cases like this where Japanese families would still defend their relative, even if that relative committed murder to another family member, because they don't want to lose one more person... This has always been very strange to me. The moment they have chosen to take a person's life out of malicious intent is the moment they have become someone else, not my family anymore.

This is so common everywhere, that a free-spirited young woman is punished because she dares to follow her own path in life. The punishment can range from judgmental attitudes and disparaging remarks, up to and including banishment or death, depending on the family and/or the culture. It's sickening. RIP, Azumi.

I agree but we also have to remember that the killer was also their son. They effectively lost not one but two children so perhaps they were probably doing their best to keep him from having a harsh sentence imposed.

If the child can do that to his/her own sibling then potentially we are dealing with a psychopath who I would fear would do it again to someone else. You should cover Bob Berdella sometime, he was known as the Kansas City butcher. He owned a booth at a flea market called "Bob's Bazaar Bizarre" where he sold weird art, jewelry, and antiques. At night he would prowl the streets and pick up young, vulnerable men under the guise of giving them a place to stay... but instead, he would bind them and torture them to death over the span of days or weeks. He was eventually caught when one of his victims managed to escape.

So he murdered and then SA the corpse of his sister which he then dismembered and stored in his room and he was given 8 years upgraded to 12 years? I recognise that the crime rate in Japan is pretty low but their sentencing rules are weird. There's that other famous case of those boys who abducted a girl, tortured and SA her for weeks before murdering her and they got something like 4-5 years in juvenile detention.

This one hits home real hard. Was abused heavily growing up by an older sibling, and a parent not only covered it up, but threatened me into silence. To this day that sibling still lives with the parent and terrorizes people. I unironically joked about this being my fate for years. That he would kill me and mostly get away with it because he would, as always, be protected. 🤷🏻♀️ still think it could happen someday. Maybe not to me, but someone.

It's truly disgusting how Azumi's parents didn't give two-$#!+$ about the way their son (Yuki) murdered and dismembered Azumi. And for what? Because she wanted to follow her own dreams and not the same fixed path as them???
I'll never understand certain cultures where they hold these extremely high expectations for their children, and then berate or disown them simply because the children can't or don't want to.
Children in those said cultures should be allowed to pursue their own passions/careers, as long as it's nothing criminal.
The way i understand it, it's not that they don't care about their daughter because of her choice, or at all. They do, they took her back despite disagreeing with what she was doing and her basically making it clear she wasn't taking up the mantle like they wanted her too, after all.
They defended their son in court that hard to basically save face (idk if there's a term for it in Japanese, heck, I'm not even 100% sure if I'm explaining it right, but here goes nothing), not just for them but for their eldest son who was, I'm going to assume, also be affected by this. That their daughter starred in 15+ kinda raunchy movies was already a big stain on their name--even if it's something they accepted privately, publicly it's another thing altogether--now you add in a murderous son, that was reportably a disappointment that couldn't meet the elder brother halfway in ability, to an already bad reputation of an family that, I'm pretty sure, weren't just wealthy, but somewhat known? And I'm sure you can say that the whole "he's family" thing also played some part in it. Even bad men love their moms and vice-versa as it were. I've seen that a lot personally.
None of this is to say that them badmouthing Azumi while she can't defend herself is justified or excusable. No, that's pretty abhorrent and disgusting in my opinion, different culture or no. I just think it pays to understand why, more or less, it was done vs just assuming it's out of malice. Sometimes it is, totally, but here, I think it's just slightly more murky. Slightly.

I’m moving to Japan the end of March. I know Japan is safe, been there a couple times, but whenever someone gets murdered there it’s something truly horrific. 0-60. Japan is also really strange when it comes to justice. Look what happened to Junko Furuta… no justice. Look up Lindsay Hawker too… This guy getting off and just living his good ol’ life after 12 years after horrifically killing and dismembering his own sister, doesn’t surprise me at all.

This case reminds me so much of two dear friends i have. Both are brothers and both sons of two doctors. Both were expected to carry on the family tradition. One gave in to the pressure and was always the good one. The other rather pursued his own dreams and was always the bad one. Until he could not take it any more and left. The son that left is now leading a normal life, while the one that gave in to the parents pressure (mostly from their mother) failed to become a doctor, was diagnosed with several disorders and childhood trauma and now lives on disability checks. They are not Japanese, but this shows how parents pressure can destroy a person.
I have a family friend who had parents that goes around bragging about her becoming a doctor. But she is nothing near that... they lived in an ideal world. What is the big deal about being a doctor? There are many many doctors in this world.

Just watched it and I couldn't believe my ears, the justice system is a joke a literal joke,they got 9-20yrs for kidnapped, rape over 400times for 44days, torture and a level of darkness I never even heard off,there's a problem with the system on handling cases where female gender are victims and I truly feel sad for how women,girls or the female gender are being treated,it's sick to the stomach, this case,Junkos was too much too stomach

I’ve always thought that the family and societal expectations in Japan are also a huge contributing factor in their high rare of child/teen/adolescent murderers and why they’ve had to keep lowering the age that they can convict someone for murder. I always hear in those cases about how the societal/familial pressure and bullying just makes these kids crack.

That is, sadly, still true for most families in Japan. Family traditions are everything and you MUST be seen as a respectable (by their definition) citizen. Doesn't matter if something you want to do is not wrong, but if it's seen as one, you will have a lot of problems. That's why there are so many tragic incidents at Aokigahara.

Would you consider exploring the case of the murder of Officer Gregory Neupert from New Orleans? Officer Neupert got shot by a drug dealer and in retaliation, the police raided Algiers and killed three people, two responsible for the murder and one innocent. The Neupert family never got closure and the suspects never got a fair trial. It's an absolute tragedy all around. Given how you focus on the victims first, I feel like you would give the case the proper respect it deserves.

Turns out Azumi was right about her brother. She should've kept well away from him. I'd say there were more than a few reasons Yuki turned out like he did. This isnt just a Japanese thing, its the same the world over in high achieving families, the expectations of kids in those families are higher than regular families. Btw, there's a lot of rebellious kids in Japan too.
I can only speak for myself but in Asian culture it is about legacy and a lot of the times the young are expected to take up and care for their parents as they get older. Which is why the pressure to become successful is so harsh. My parents themself told me I’m getting nothing in their will because I don’t want to become a doctor lol I expected as much. We’ve had this fight since high school where the only “approval” you can get is thru ur grades. I did well for myself lol but at the same time I’d rather be happy than pursuing something I don’t feel passionate about. In this generation it’s like sacrificing approval from family to be happy, and it’s not easy. I live in the west, which. Aah comes with its own implications among Asian families. but I can only imagine how hard it is to be in Asia with this strict traditionalism.

Sadly this is the case in many Asian cultures. Me being a mother myself, feel so sorry for the teenagers in the Asian country where I work and reside. They have so many dreams and ambitions but none that include family tradition and they can’t go against it so they have to shove it down or bury it because they don’t want to be disowned or don’t want to disappoint the parents but deep down they are terribly unhappy.

The pressure of family tradition played a huge role here, and that the negative reinforcement Yuki faced to conform to the tradition exacerbated his mental instability. Watching Azumi walk away from her obligation to family only to be accepted with open arms after she failed to make it on her created an undeniable sibling rift of jealousy. From his actions it is clear Yuki felt trapped into accepting his obligation to family, and that he was not happy to not have the same choice that Azumi had to simply walk away from that obligation.
The two points that has me scratching my head as to Yuki's mental condition when he committed the murder, is why steal a pair of his sister's panties and take them with him and why defile her intimate areas? I can see a predator like Ted Bundy doing something as depraved, but those actions point to someone who wants to remember their "victory" over something and points to some deeply seated hatred Yuki held towards Azumi.
Don’t try to justify murderers. Almost all of Japanese are this strict with their kids, how many end up killing? Murder of innocents have NO excuse. Every time people try to justify serial killers, murderers, abusers, pedos, rapers etc because they “were also victims of abuse” it makes me sick. It is no excuse and there is no justification for something like this.

Every time I try to get a better insight on what triggers people a lot of people misconstrue my thought process as being an attempt to justify when all we are doing is trying to put the mental pieces of the puzzle together. 😉

I know that when I lived in Japan from 1991-1994, they were still ashamed if a girl or woman was raped. So I imagine her line of work didn’t help with the lack of respect for his sister.

This channel is excellent and there are a lot of cases I have not been familiar with and I really enjoy your laidback style of story telling. I have 2 case suggestions. The Whitaker Family massacre in Sugar Land Texas and the case of Christine Paolilla.
The Paolilla case was nuts! So sad what she did to those girls who really took her under their wing and effectively changed her whole life. That case stuck with me. Another few are Delphi, the Farmville murders and Jenelle Potter.
