I'm curious, have you seen the series Once Upon a Time? It practically brings many Disney characters together, as well as a few others. Many are changed quite drastically, but mostly in a good way. Captain Hook is one of the best characters there.

The one lost boy who stayed on Peter’s side managed to smooth out Peter’s wrinkles a bit and actually make him SMILE, and that’s how he recognized him. 🥺❤️ Honestly super sweet ugh.

RU FI OOOOOOO!! Fun fact: When Robin Williams was handing his sword to the next person in charge. No one knew who he was going to give the sword to, so all the Lost Boys reaction and anticipation was genuine. When he handed the sword to Thud Butt that's a genuine reaction of him being chosen.
That part makes me cry every time

The scene where the Lost Boy is touching Peter’s face and says “oh THERE YOU ARE” is him trying to smooth out Peter’s face to see if he can recognize young Peter under the wrinkles and other signs of aging.
He was looking for the smile.
Thing is, Hook WASN'T lying to jack. He was just telling him cruel truths. The ones we usually try to protect kids from. And in doing so, he got Jack to trust him.
He was telling half truths, there are parents like that, but there are many others who do love their kids and want what’s best for them
the point the film was pushing was Hook is so cynical and incapable of real love himself, that he cannot tell the difference.
Even the truths he tells Jack are manipulated to make it seem like Peter doesn't care, and yet Jack’s birth is Peter’s greatest happy thought.

@@jean-paulaudette9246 i know, I was just pointing out that what makes Hook so dangerous was the fact that he was mixing half truths with truths, and that’s one of the best ways to manipulate someone especially kids
Hooks interpretation is also a great character reveal for himself and how he views the world and things like love.
It's why I think this is one of the best children's movies ever made. The fact that parents can snap at you, can get fed up and tired and want time away from you is difficult to understand when you're little. It's usually swept under the rug but I'm sure every child has felt unloved at some point.
One of my favorite lines of his was always "Lie?! Me??! Never. The truth is far too much fun".
Sad Fact - Spielberg has said he's disappointed with the way the film came out but I think the film is absolutely amazing. The scene of Robin Williams flying away and saying "Thank you for believing." always gets me now because of how Robin Williams passed.

Yes. Whenever I see the joy on Robin Williams's face when he flies in this movie I just want to burst into tears. I wish he could have hung onto that. I understand why he couldn't, but oh how I wish he could have.

Nick, one of the major things about Neverland they didn’t make a big thing of in the film adaptions before this was that it makes you forget. Neverland somehow makes your memories distort. Peter leaving Neverland somehow made him forget his time there.
The one constant of Neverland; Time flows differently. What may pass as three days and nights in Neverland is naught but two hours on earth, or perhaps it’s vise versa where decades pass on earth and yet only perhaps a week has passed in Neverland.
It’s the dis-balance between the two that makes one slowly forget, like the effect of jet lag.
Tootles is one of the saddest characters, in the original book and play, he was always off doing something else when the majority of the story took place, only to just say “I’ve missed the adventure again, haven’t I, Peter?” Which is exactly what he says just before getting his marbles in this movie.
"I'm a daddy." I grew up with this movie and absolutely love it, but having just had a baby, that scene of him finding his happy thought made me tear up.
Fun fact :Rufio is played by Dante Basco, who voiced Zuko in Avatar: The Last Airbender.

Robin Williams is the best part of everything he was in. Rest In Peace
I know critics hated this movie, but I love it very much! On o my favorite movies as a kid. Nominated for Best Visual Effects, Best Makeup, Best Production Design and Best Costume Design.
It made $300 million dollars against a $75-80 million dollar budget.
David Bowie, Tim Curry, and Mick Jagger were considered for Captain Hook in a musical adaptation of the movie in 1985 with Michael Jackson in the role of Peter Pan, but production was put on hold as Steven Spielberg was too busy with The Color Purple, Empire Of The Sun, Indiana Jones And The Last Crusade and Always, until he finally got a chance to make his Peter Pan movie. He had a falling out with Julia Roberts, whom was cast as Tinkerbell and would frequently get into arguments with Spielberg over the script. Both her and Spielberg would Never work with each other again.
The film is now considered a cult classic.
I don’t understand why, it’s completely fresh compared to the classic story.
I was pretty disappointed to find out Spielberg doesn't really like this movie much either.
Tim Curry actually voiced Hook in a Peter Pan TV show.
Also, Julia Roberts was nominated for Worst Supporting Actress.
I feel Julia was mis-cast in this. Zero whimsy and not my idea of fairy like. The Tink in the live action made much more sense to me.
Meanwhile, it has become a cult classic, it captures the atmosphere and epic of the take and the power of belief and happiness over hate and cynicism
The story of Peter Pan has always been my favorite, and Hook is definitely one of my favorite adaptations 🥰 it contains my favorite quote of all time:
“You know that place between sleep and awake, that place where you still remember dreaming? That's where I'll always love you. That's where I'll be waiting.” 💖
As much as I loved the other adaptations of Peter Pan this one has to be my favorite, not just because of the great cast and Robin Williams- but because of the unique direction of the story. A Peter Pan who definitely reminds you of the dad in the original story, who has forgotten everything about his childhood because he grew up. It was Peter’s biggest fear about growing up, everyone he loved either forgetting him or him forgetting Neverland and in this movie that’s exactly what the plot is about. It’s a movie about him re-discovering his childhood and Robin really nails that well. It’s still got the same charm as every movie and play before it. I love that Tinker Bell has a bit of a more significant role in this movie and can talk and be more than just a mischievous little fairy. There’s just so much about this movie that I love. Also.. Maggie Smith is a legend no matter what she’s doing.
Hook is yet another one of my all time favorite Robin Williams films! Robin Williams was one of the greatest actors who ever lived and Peter Pan is such an iconic role for Robin to play!!!
I've only ever seen two people out-perform Robin Williams.
Nathan Lane in "The Birdcage"
and Dustin Hoffman in "Hook"
Most definitely especially Nathan Lane he killed that role
It's hard to judge this movie because the characters were light years apart.
Robin only lets them outperform him as appropriate to his characters.

I believe this is the first movie I ever saw in theatres. Robin Williams was a big part of my childhood and onward. I'll always love this one.👍

Yes, I have a vivid memory of seeing this in the theater when I was 9, and loving it.
As far as the ending, my interpretation is that the pixie dust wore off for Peter and Tink wasn't there to top him off. Also, I love that he doesn't go in through the front door-- that's what an adult would do! Instead he embraces being childlike and silly and climbs the drain pipe up to the window.
I also think as someone who had a hard time connecting with my parents as a kid because of how different I am from them, the idea of having the family be unsure of how Peter will react because they come home separately really works for me. He pretends to scold them like he did in the beginning, and it makes the kids and Wendy and the audience nervous that he hasn't learned anything, but then he shifts and he has, he's fully embraced the idea that life is short and family is more important than work (culminating in his throwing the cell phone out the window).
Also, I think the window is an important thematic element, and links back to Hook and how Hook chooses never to change, and can't accept changes when they occur. He left through the window at the beginning and resists every change that follows for him (that Peter forgot, that kids might like him, that the war he's planned might go differently, that he's defeated, that Peter no longer cares about him). Peter leaves through the window and accepts the changes instead (that Neverland is real, that he's Peter Pan, that his children are important to him and he's been neglecting them, that he can still play and pretend even though he's grown up) and he takes those lessons back with him, goes back through the window because he'll now be able to change and grow without becoming lost again.
Just my thoughts! I know as an adult I watch this movie with totally different eyes now, and I think it's one that gets better every time I watch it.
Also it’s Phil Collins as the inspector at 12:27!! 😆 This movie is honestly chock-full of bizarre fun trivia. Like the fact that George Lucas and Carrie Fisher are the couple kissing on the bridge when Tinker Bell carries Peter out the window, and Glenn Close is legit the pirate who gets put in the “Boo Box”. WHAT??? 😂
You missed a 19 year old Gwyneth Paltrrow, as young Wendy, in what was only her second feature film role.

Wow I didn't notice all those cameos before. Big shocker that that was Glenn Close as that pirate. I did always feel there was something unnatural about him. Now it makes sense.
David Crosby and Jimmy Buffett appear as other pirates. Buffett plays one of the pirates trying to steal Peter's shoes and Crosby is the pirate, during Hook's first appearance on screen, who says, "Long live the hook."
Two Disney villains in one movie? Is this a CROSSOVER EPISODE?(Lol, I know "Hook'wasn't based on the Disney Peter Pan.)
I like how this movie shows a battle of two midlife crises, Hook's and Peter's. Hook is terrified of death and clinging to his old power, while Peter rediscovers his inner child and a love of life. Great film!
The imaginary food bit is inspired by 'Peter and Wendy':
"Their chief food was roasted breadfruit, yams, cocoa-nuts, baked pig, mammee-apples, tappa rolls and bananas, washed down with calabashes of poe-poe; but you never exactly knew whether there would be a real meal or just a make-believe, it all depended upon Peter's whim. He could eat, really eat, if it was part of a game, but he could not stodge just to feel stodgy, which is what most children like better than anything else; the next best thing being to talk about it. Make-believe was so real to him that during a meal of it you could see him getting rounder. Of course it was trying, but you simply had to follow his lead, and if you could prove to him that you were getting loose for your tree he let you stodge."
As a child when this was released, I had zero complaints. Looking back I can see the flaws, but I think critics had huge expectations at the time, being a Spielberg film.
Totally agree, they were expecting Indiana Jones/E.T. and instead we got more of a pure kid’s film with a ton of whimsy. There’s nothing bad about that at all, it’s more that this feels like the kind of movie that a child would make with the deep psychological aspects of the story added in by a more nuanced hand on top.
This is one of my favorite childhood films and might be Dustin Hoffman's best performance - he absolutely disappeared into CAPTAIN! JAMES! HOOOOOOK! Not to mention John Williams' crazy score. And Bob Hoskins. God damn it's so good.

John Williams was nominated for his JFK score, but I think this should've been the one chosen from him. Even though the song "When You're Alone" was also nominated.

Great reaction to one of my all time favourite films!
"Oh, there you are Peter..." is one of my all time favourite film moments. It's the simple concept that you can look at a person and sometimes the simple way a person smiles or turns their face to the side you can see that that person's true child self is never truly lost.
I think the statement the film makes is that at this point Peter has completely lost this side of his persona - he is so consumed in what it means to be an adult that he has completely forgotten the importance of childhood.
Yes, we all must grow up. But we also have to maintain our goodness and purity and never forget our origins.
I love the concept that if I were confronted with my childhood friends from that age that they would all be there to welcome me and remember me as if I'd never left. I think for many who have nostalgia for their childhood this scene really hits home... the simple concept that there is a place where your childhood is frozen in time and Peter gets to go back there and all his friends reunite with him as if he never left. To me, it's a fantasy but it's just a truly heartwarming concept.

I recently learned that when Peter was on the plane, and the pilot comes over the intercom. Its Dustin Hoffmans [Captain Hook] voice, about 3:57 in this video
I believe the statue Peter wakes up under at the end is a real one in Kensington Gardens, the real-life place where Peter might have disappeared to Neverland in the book. It plays a role in the author’s stories about Peter. Thanks for reacting, this is an underrated movie!

Of course, Maggie Smith's original claim to fame was her role as the title character in *The Prime of Miss Jean Brodie* (1969).
I love this movie so much. It's one of Steven Spielbergs most underrated Gems. Spielberg is also a big Disney Fan and Peter Pan is one of his favorites. It's so wonderful how he advanced the Story of Peter Pan, without hurting the original story. Goes to show why he was such a one of a kind guy.
Besides, you can never go wrong with Robin Williams.
One fun fact: The Police chief who came to the house after the children where kidnapped, was played by Phil Collins.
Years ago, I was talking with a member of the fight choreography group that did the fight scenes for Hook, as well as many others. The man told me that one of the ways to tell how good the actor was with a sword was how close the camera zoomed in on them during the fight. The further away the camera shot is, the better the actor. When the actor doesn't have the skill, they zoom in to cover it up with close angles and editing. If they have skill, they ca, actually, show the actor's moves with full body shots. The guy said that Robin Williams was the, single, best actor they ever worked with, who wasn't, already, a trained swordsman. If you notice, almost all of Robin William's fight scenes are full body shots.
On the other side, he said that the worst they ever worked with was Charlie Sheen, in the Disney version of Three Musketeers. Apparently, he put several extras in the hospital during his fight scenes.
Thank you for reacting to this gem! The music literally feels like my childhood. The way John Williams can evoke such emotion and memory is nothing short of amazing. He is a true genius. The porton of the score "Remembering Childhood" is the most beautiful portion of a score I have ever heard and it literally reminds me of my childhood. Sometimes I just listen to it in the car and cry from the nostalgia lol. Sounds cheesy I know. I'm a 34 year old mother of a toddler. Sometimes I just need a good cry and remember my youth.

Bangerang! I am so happy you watched this. This is my top favorite Peter Pan movie. Robin Williams will forever be my Peter Pan, just as Dustin Hoffman will be Capt. Hook. This film was my entire childhood along with the soundtrack. John Williams truly knows how to score childish innocence and memory. Just as you referenced Maggie Smith as Prof. Mcgonagall; when I saw her in Harry Potter, she was Granny Wendy and Jean Brodie to me :) such astounding performances. Robin’s energy and dynamic is achingly missed from this world. I’m very happy that you had fun and enjoyed this. Though there are some who may dislike it; I say watching this film is like the scene at the table of unseen food, you just need to use your imagination to see beyond the surface, then you see and feel the magic through your inner child. The song Maggie sang on the deck of The Jolly Roger is a holdover from the original concept of this film, in which it was intended to be a musical.

I saw this film with my grandma so many times in theaters when I was 11 years old in 1991 and now in my 42 years old I still love this classic movie Hook directed by Steven Spielberg starring Dustin Hoffman, Robin Williams, Julia Roberts, Bob Hoskins and music score by John Williams. Honestly I’m SO glad you watched a couple of Peter Pans before this. It’s such a cool spin on the Peter Pan lore and I honestly can’t remember a time when I didn’t watch it. One of my very fave movies. ❤️❤️ It got me to start reading the book and now I gotta get back to it HMM…

I really appreciated your assessment about the film after the reaction. Critics really didn't like this when it came out, but I am glad people look back on it more favorably now that some time has passed. Certainly not perfect, but I like it a lot. My personal favorite is the 2003 live action Peter Pan; the score, the casting, the effects, the story, and the themes are all amazing.
There was a time where I would have been defensive about calling the 2003 film the best Peter Pan, but I have a different opinion now. I think the original animated Peter Pan, Hook, and the 2003 live action Peter Pan can all be enjoyed together because all of them bring something different to the story. The original is a fun, light-hearted comedy about enjoying youth before growing up (best for young kids). The 2003 live action is a mature reflection on what it means to grow up, and what is lost by choosing to be a child (best for kids entering puberty and teens). Hook is about valuing family and recapturing the joy of childhood, even as an adult (best for young/regular adults). These stories are so much more complimentary than I ever thought before, and I enjoy all three movies more when I think of them as a trilogy.

This movie was my childhood, and despite it's shortcomings it's by far one of my favourite movies of all time.
Hook is my fav Peter Pan movie of all time. So many hated it because they thought PP didn't need a story like this. Movie has the perfect cast and storyline.

I noticed you talked about the score in the video, This is another amazing musical score by John Williams (Star Wars, ET, Jurassic Park, Jaws etc). I was fortunate enough in April 2022 to see John Williams conduct the Philadelphia Orchestra, one of the pieces they performed was "Flight to Neverland" from this movie.
I loved this movie when I was a kid! Robin Williams made a perfect grown up Peter Pan! Miss him so much.

The actor that plays Hook is Dustin Hoffman. He was one of the biggest actors in Hollywood. Some of his films are: Tootsie, Midnight Cowboy, The Graduate, Rain Man, Mr Magorium's Wonderful Emporium, Meet the Fockers and All the President's Men to start. Oh I so miss Robin Williams.
In the book and original play, Peter Pan was the only one capable of imagining food he could actually eat. The lost boys had to find food for themselves. (The original story was really dark).
This was one of my many favorite movies from my childhood and still love watching to this day. Rufio's character was also my very first childhood crush.
Such an amazingly well done, creative, beautiful, and touching movie. It's my favorite role of Robin Williams' and my favorite role of Dustin Hoffman's. They're absolutely brilliant. I grew up with it, yet it never fails to amaze me every time I watch it.
I love the idea that using your imagination in Neverland makes things come to life. It happens when Peter finally imagines food at the dinner scene allowing the lost boys to eat but the better scene is during the final battle when the lost boys use a bunch of clocks to awaken Hook’s worst fear and his imagination brings the old Croc back to life for one last feast.
Dustin Hoffman (Captain Hook) is also in “Tootsie” (1982) and “Rain Man” (1988) with Tom Cruise.
Bob Hoskins (Smee) You’ve probably seen him most notably in “Who Framed Roger Rabbit” (1988) as Eddie Valiant.
Julia Roberts (Tinkerbell) is in “Pretty Woman” (1990) and one of my personal favorites “Steel Magnolias” (1989).

John Williams really outdid himself with this score. I honestly think it’s his best work.
the "original version" of 'peter pan' is the book by j. m. barrie; every other version released after are just adaptations - same goes for 'the jungle book', 'charlie and the chocolate factory' and pretty much every fairytale you can think of.
Well, if you're going to be strict about it, the most well-known Peter Pan story originated as a play!

The training was just to tire him out and make him and the lost boys feel like they were doing something. The main thing was to make him remember because he already knew how to use a sword and stuff.
To complete your Peter Pan journey you should certainly watch Finding Neverland - it's beautiful

Hey Awesome! You've met Prince Zuko, now you finally get to see Dante Basco's other most well known role: Rufio!
Basco himself later served as executive producer on a short film called "Bangarang" that delves into Rufio's backstory. It's pretty good! I would totally recommend checking it out.
This movie is definitely a childhood classic, and my favorite Peter Pan adaptation. Critics may not have liked this movie, but to me, this is one of my favorite movies with Robin Williams, and Dustin Hoffman absolutely played a perfect Captain Hook. Now, regarding Peter Pan (2003), while also being a classic I grew up on, it's not as nostalgic as this movie or even as the 1953 animated movie; I think its just because I didn't watch it as much as this one or the animated one. Also, fun fact about the 2003 Peter Pan, it was supposed to be the prequel to this movie, but since Hoffman didn't want to reprise his role, they decided against it.
I love this movie. It took on all new meaning when I became a father. Then, again, became something different altogether when I lost my son.
Honestly, the absolute best part of this movie is Dustin Hoffman. It’s worth watching for him alone.
In my opinion, this is probably the best version of Captain Hook there is I might even argue he is so much more better than the original Disney version. Dustin Hoffman played in so freaking well, he played him with a bit of comedy and still he’s able to be completely menacing. When I think of Captain Hook he’s the first character that I think of

I always loved this movie when I was little. it doesn't talk down to kids and brings up one essential question children have that's rarely addressed: What if my parents don't love me?
The idea with the croc at the end was that Hook's fears of death and mortality causes the croc to come back to life when he touches it

Such a good movie. A lot of these kid actors were good actors from other movies from the time of my childhood. Robin and Dustin were such great picks for this movie.
13 years old when I was dragged to see this with the family back in 1991. Moody teenager. Melted my stroppy heart. Dustin Hoffman was hugely entertaining. The real star here though is John Williams - the score is beautiful, that final few minutes slays me every time.
Edit: You don't have to speak so fast - it sounds like a "terms and conditions" bit at the end of a radio commercial. Chill out a bit! It's too stressful!
Robin Williams will never be forgotten. And the Peter pan movies are popular and so famous, no wonder they have made so many different versions of the Peter pan movies.
this movie holds a special place in my heart because came out on the same week I was born and stars my favorite actor (Robin Williams).

For reference, Smee ate some of his food because he was testing for poison, as Hook and his crew had been there so long, some hated him and wanted him potentially dead.
It’s a ancient practice since antiquity, kings and nobles would hire someone to taste test the food, and if they lived, the king would eat, if the guy died, obviously the king wouldn’t.

Dustin Hoffman is a great actor yet I don't see a lot of reactions to movies with him outside Rain Man. He was a voice in the Kung Fu Panda movies but I haven't seen those. He also starred in Finding Neverland, a biopic about Sir James Matthew Barrie (Johnny Depp) who wrote Peter Pan.
A couple other Dustin Hoffman movies you might like are Hero, Kramer vs Kramer and Tootsie.
Everyone talked about what an honor and pleasure it was to be on set with Robin Williams and Dustin Hoffman. And what a pain in the ass it was with Julia Roberts... even Spielberg was 😵💫😵
Robin Williams is such a chameleon actor. My favorite movie from him was What Dreams May Come. When it comes to emotional movies I don't know any better from him I don't want to spoil it if you haven't seen it Nick but you should put this one on your list.
Yeah this was a great memory from my childhood. Glad it became one of those later gems instead of fading out completely

I love this movie!! Its also absolutely full of cameos! For example the pirate who bet against Hook is Glenn Close, the detective in the beginning is Phill Collins, the kissing couple that tinks dust makes fly when they are on the way to neverland is Carrie Fisher and George Lucas, and I forget exactly which pirate but one is played by Jimmy Buffet! Oh! And the captain making the announcement on the plane is Dustin Hoffman!

the training was only to remind Peter who he was . he already had the hand to hand combat down with years of battling Hook. he just had to feel it deepo inise. just like when he saw all the food. it was already deep inside of him. Loved this movie, and your reactions.

I was looking forward to this reaction! Hook is one of my favorite movies. It wonderfully plays with the idea of adults vs. children, conforming to expectations versus indulging in imagination, and how too much of either way can get you 'trapped'. The kids don't grow old and experience the joys of adulthood, the adults can't go back once they're grown---except peter, who by the end is both (as it should be)! I was definitely surprised you guessed Rufio's ending, as a kid I sure as heck didn't! One of the first 'deaths' I ever saw on TV as a kid, and his last words were so touching. Hook was a marvelous actor and my favorite portrayal to date.
Side note, if you're interested in continuing the Peter Pan streak, might I suggest 'Finding Neverland' (2004). It's a dramatized biopic about how the author of Peter Pan met the Davies (the real-life inspiration for Peter and the lost boys) and wrote the play. It's an enjoyable movie, and quite touching at the end.
