      Yeah, now that I’m watching it with an adult brain and after reading this comment I’m really curious how many of these shots were intentional and how many were just from this filming two dogs and a cat all day and adding narration 😂 🧐

      @@PenneySounds a quick google search will show you there was no animal abuse involved. They actually kept very detailed interactions with the animals that are still easily accessible and most shots were many videos quick spliced together. The porcupine scene for example was done with a real porcupine that released quills into a fake dog (this does not hurt the porcupine and they often shed quills like other needles and fur) and the quills you see on chance were rubber and spirit gum.

    • @PenneySounds
      @PenneySounds 3 года назад +5

      @@so...thathappened4170 I mean, there was a real cat struggling to keep its head above water in one scene

    • @so...thathappened4170
      @so...thathappened4170 3 года назад +49

      @@PenneySounds that scene was done with not one cat but several very trained cats who could swim perfectly fine with harnesses on and trainers right next to them, a few fake cats, and a mechanical cat. The real cats were not in rapids but a very shallow stream or a warm pool (depending on the cut) each cat was only in the water for less than 8 seconds. So there actually wasn’t a real cat struggling to survive and keep her head above the water.
      Edit: I thought I should add that my source is the American Humane Hollywood. These are the guys who are in charge of making sure movies are not having animal cruelty and make sure they go to court if there is. They are the reason for the “no animals were harmed” stamp of approval.

    I'm kind of in awe of Don Ameche's performance in this film. A legendary actor who knew full well he didn't have much time left, doing what he could well have viewed as a cheap paycheck role beneath his dignity (which is certainly how Sally Field saw it, but fortunately this perfectly fits her character), he instead fully embraced it and delivers a highly poignant and noble performance which ended his career on a real high note.

    • @guardiansoulblade2673

      The funny thing about Sally Field is while she might not have liked the role of Sassy it is probably the first role you ever heard her voice as a kid, and it's how I remembered who she was seeing her in other movies where she wasn't behind a microphone, so while it may not have been a role she particularly wanted it did help people grow up and recognize her name when they got older and watched live-action movies with acting roles in them.

Thankfully this film has really well documented accounts of almost every scene, stunt, and scare the animals go through in the movie. These actors were cared for above and beyond the standard of care at the time, and I was so happy to learn that the animals were treated humanly and that most of what we see is movie magic! Just thought I'd help ease someone else mind if they were wondering! also, pretty shocked this film got chosen! its usually forgotten about!!

    I used to love this film as a kid! It's weird seeing it now as I own an American Bulldog; I used to think they looked a bit mean but.... they're not.
    Chance is an accurate depiction of the breed. Kinda looks like mine back when we got him at 18 months, minus the black patches. Mine's 100% white and one heck of a chore to keep clean. His favourite pastime is rolling in the smelliest, muckiest things he can find.
    If you like this, you might be interested in a little film called Fly Away Home, I'm not sure if this is right but some part of my mind is telling me it was based on a true story
