The Bluebell Grapevines went in the ground today along with all of the flowers in the baskets and planters. The only things left to plant are the purple milkweed, sand dropseed, and finally the fowl manna grass once the catchment pond is dug. Then I can plant the vegie garden - very late again😉 Then we can finish-up the breezeway and start clearing the 'pad' for the first phase of the woodshop build. It should be a very interesting summer/fall!

9:22 Excellent demo of bare root grapevine planting for 😅any newbie - especially in digging a hole only about 12" deep and laying out the roots horizontally along a 12" long trench. Pleasant and clear narration sharing years of experience.

Thanks. So far my vines are looking better, thanks to your suggestions. I'm getting everything to the top wire. I don't have many bud sights facing down but have been able to train the ones facing up, down to one side of the cordon or the other. Figured it was worth trying since I didn't seem to have much choice. So far so good. Appreciate your info.

You are quite welcome Samlon. You will pick it up, and it will become second nature after a couple of years. Good luck with the rest of the season! 😊🍇

19:32 I may have missed it in the video, but why didn’t you cut the roots in the second plant to encourage growth?

Hi Mojo, wow 1944, I was a year old, we were called war babies lol. Never seen roots as long as that. The packaging looked like shreaded newspaper.

Hi Larry, I'm not sure how it is over the pond there in England, but in the US most homeowners get their grapevines at big box stores in little pots or sometimes little cardboard containers. They are one year old vines with severely trimmed roots. You can clearly see that this is a better way to buy grape vines! Yes, the packaging was shredded newspaper, and that was added to the compost pile. 😊🍇

Great info, thanks! I have inherited a couple of bare root vines, but I don't have a clue what they are... Is there a way of being able to tell which training system the vine requires, or is there a system which would work best as some sort of starting compromise? Thanks

The fungi you see growing on wood chips are saprophytic, not mycorrhizal.

Yeah the 3 feet roots are really impressive. How do they even dig them up..?

I believe they are healed into loose compost.

I'm not sure. The reason to soak in water is to rehydrate the roots, but usually the roots are pretty moist unless it took very long to ship. I would say it will be fine, but make sure to water it good - don't over water though. Let it dry out a bit between waterings. Good luck!

… I just bought 6 vines from a big box store … does that mean my vines are doomed ? … 😕

      They will probably grow fine.
