Honestly the best part is how you get used to the acoustic version as being a sort of theme for the Nightwings, and then Oralech steps up with this version which feels disgusting and twisted compared to what you've come to know as something of your own, but in the way it's supposed to, even though it sounds badass.
Yeah I'm sure a crippled reader would have been a lot more helpful in the sahrian union than a fully qualified physician. If you chose to free yourself, you made a selfish decision without considering your character's bland past
Honestly, I can see wanting him to fuck off due to him possibly being connected to the ending of the Rites (is it because he broke tradition with the True Nightwings? Who knows?), which in turns dooms potentially hundreds of people (and who knows how many generations) to being stuck in the Downside, but- Damn, they just characterized him so well, I couldn't resist giving him his chance. Had to beat him first, though, so he'd understand it was mercy.
Shame this game is so underrated and considered SuperGiant's worst game despite being my favorite, it really shows how much quality and effort is put into their games.
It's considered the worst one? The only one I haven't tried by Supergiant was Bastion, because it's just not the genre for me. I think Pyre easily rivals Hades and maybe even surpasses it, with Transistor coming in third.
it's because while the story is amazing as usual, the gameplay gets a bit sketchy at times. Like the AI often cheats, there are still bugs in the ocean levels even 6 years later and it can feel clunky to control. It's not as tight and satisfying to play as Hades, Bastion, or Transistor.
This is probably my favorite theme in the game because there's several moments where it kicks in and catches you entirely off guard, then shit hits the fan. It's especially helped by how it starts off with humble, noble strings before the demonic bass kicks in.
It's funny that the White Lute version plays when you learn about the true purpose of the Nightwings. I actually stared at the dialogue box, listening to it. The next time it plays is when you meet with Oralech. For the first few seconds I was just happy I can listen to this soundtrack again and then the basses kicked in. This little thing adds to Oralech's character so much that it still amazes me.
It's not just a White Lute version. It's a bass-less version. All the themes for the triumvirates include the "baseline" instruments and the "accented" instruments, which only play when the relevant characters show up. For instance, "Surviving Exile" has the bass line with slight mandolin on the top, but it adds several instruments when Hedwyn, Jodariel or Rukey speak (guitar, drums and a flute respectively; the exact instrument names are forgotten). When you meet Barker, his theme lacks drums and extra bass that is added whenever Barker is speaking. Same happens here. "Will of the Scribes" is the Nightwings' theme, but Oralech invokes the "broken" bass that overhauls the pure melody that was playing before.
I'll never forget this soundtrack, and this track in particular is the main reason why. While I know it's Oralech's theme, it's an incredibly striking piece that, more than anything else, describes the life-changing consequences of the Rites. The song is dominated by two elements: A sonorous, hopeful lute which meshes with a heavy, foreboding bassline in a natural harmony. The two elements represent a intrinsic dichotomy of the Rites, or more appropriately, your role in them as the Reader. You are the arbiter of freedom for the exiles of the Downside but so too are you the one responsible for the continued suffering of those left behind. All the triumph and tragedy of the Rites falls onto you.
Beautifully, beautifully, written. Hate to admit it, but, yeah, as The Reader of The Nightwings, as who we are, we are the ones to orchestrate, not only The Plan, but, to whom should regain their freedom to the Commonwealth. Haven't finished everything yet, but, I'm already torn at wanting to free my own triumvirate members, or to those I feel is deserving from the other triumvirates. Possible spoilers: In order of liberation, I've released Hedwyn, Tamitha (cus' Pamitha begged to have her sister liberated T_T), then Jodariel. Looking forward to see what happens after.
@@callandor4704 thanks for the curiosity 😂 I've finished the game a long while ago. Still a beautiful game. Don't remember exactly who I managed to free, but it was a mix of people that I felt could help with the liberation plans. One thing that does irk me is that freeing Tamitha allowed her to attack the people of the city? Something like that? Can't remember. With her Harp clan. But freeing Oralech was awesome! He gave medical help to people that were affected by the violence that broke out in the city.
@@GoldGiggler Yeah, I think Tamitha orchestrates an attack on the Commonwealth, which either ruins the plans or helps sow chaos but makes Volfred's ideal peaceful revolution void. If Pamitha also goes free, I think she stops her. But I don't remember all too well, either. Letting Oralech go free nearly made me cry. The characters in this game are second to none.
Pretty sure this and glorious tradition are my favorite tracks. I just love the contrast of the mandolin with the bass so much and the moods it makes are sooooooo fitting
Best song of the game, I love how during the dialogue the soft and tough parts of the song interchange depending on who is talking to match the vibes. Others songs have this but this one is the strongest.
Having played the first time on hard (For some reason) I went with the strategy that had been doing me well up to that point. I got my ass kicked by his crew in a big way, which was honestly a good motivator to improve and restrategize going forward. Made your main rival actually feel like a threat when you knew that if they win, you carry on with your loss. And no fucking chance would I let Fae not return home. She stayed down the longest because I had the most faith in her.
Consider it this though, maybe the Scribes DID design Oralech to be a tragic character? His freedom was stolen from him and he then instead began formulating a path to ending the rites, and by ending the rites it perhaps helped fuel the plan, forced it into action, forced the Empire that twisted and abused the rites into something far better, a place where the rites were no longer needed?
Don't know if you do or don't care by now, but The Shimmer-Pool may be linked to the cycle of the Rites, only becoming active once a Triumvirate has succeeded in the Liberation Rite, or coinciding with said outcome. It can be assumed that Oralech formed the True Nightwings sometime during or after your Nightwings reemerge. Without the Nightwings, there wouldn't _be_ a Liberation Rite, and thus, no Shimmer-Pool.
Would love to hear a version of this without the heavy bass backing it up. I loved hearing the purely guitar & string version you can hear in-game when it isolates parts of the track in certain situations.
I'd rather they didn't. It would just be a repeat of SotC where Danny tries to play the game and pay attention to the story, while Arin alternates between making fart noises and unfunny jokes, and berating Danny for playing badly because he's being distracted by fart noises and unfunny jokes.
I actually loved their SotC playthrough. But this game would probably be a disaster for them. If Arin played he wouldn't take the time to learn how to play and he'd skip all the dialogue, and I'm not sure it's the kind of game Dan would be able to get the hang of.
Considering how memorable his character was.........................I kinda wish his backstory has been just a tad more memorable, or maybe I was just tired..?Of the members of the True Nightwings, I think the girl--Erisa?--had the most memorable story.
Two years later, but I think that’s the point. It makes more sense from a purely narrative perspective for Erisa to come back and answer for her crimes, so when Oralech comes back as the main antagonist, it leaves you feeling surprised, but not feeling like it was completely out of left field, because I mean, of course Oralech would be pissed off about having his rightful freedom stolen from him.
*Spoilers!* The reader giving his freedom to Oralech will always be canon to me. When I first beat the game I gave it to him without a doubt. I freed the reader in my second run just to see how this would affect Oralech's ending (And I left Volfred in the Downside too. Since every character's ending affect the others, too.) He literally commits suicide In the most cliché way possible (He jumps down the same mountain that he fell off years ago). And I just couldn't stand it. The second I read that I felt so bad I just closed the game.
Morvhes When Volfred asks him if he'll contribute to the plan if he goes free and he says no, it was clear for me. He was like "if neither of you wants it i'll take it" and I was like "f you mate my dawg Hedwyn is going free"
If you lose to him by a very slight amount Oralech will actually give his rightfully won freedom to you. If you accept he doesn't commit suicide and if Volfred is still in the downside he and Oralech actually make up.
Cliche?!?!?!?! How on earth is that cliche?!?!?!? I didn't get that particular ending until I think my 3rd or 4th playthrough, but I was absolutely SHOCKED that he did that. :O :O :O :O :O
''Guy lost everything, made a journey back from the dead for nothing, and is left with nothing. He then proceeds to jump from the cliff that should have killed him years ago''. Thats a cliche if you ask me.
Fiddle i think the bassless version plays when Volfred thinks he owes you some explanations and you can ask him what happened to the first Nightwings when he was a newly arrived exile at your leisure

He's less so a villain, and more of an opponent, just like all the other triumvirates, notice he harbours no ill will towards you when he enters the wagon, even though he could snap you in half and probably ruin the Nightwing's last chance at freedom. In the system of rites, everyone is a villain to your triumvirate, but not in any other way (outside of those liberated, whose actions may affect the world above but that's a different thing) As for the point of being uncompelling, I guess that's fine, personally I think he has every right to be pissed about what happened, the betrayal and the whole system to begin with. 'Tis a shame that one of you shall soon be free.

Love the contrast between the gentle, sad guitar melody and the powerful, intense bass. Works really well for Oralech's character.
Mandolin, actually. It's surprisingly easy to learn.

That moment when Oralech shows up in your caravan... just pure undistilled "Oh Shit"
Yeah!
I straight up shouted "oh SHIT" when that happened, it was one of my favorite moments.
Oh yeah.
Oralech showing up in my wagon was terrifying as hell.
It's a lot less scary when you realize he's a doctor challenging you to a game of footy, ha ha.
"You have a lot of nerve being back here."
"You have a lot of nerve being alive."
Oralech was the most rightfully pissed-off character in the game.
Or in almost any game, he got screwed over
Anyone who didn't free him at the end obviously didn't understand his character
Or wanted freedom for himself.
Like me. But I did consider giving it to him.
