  • A fun family getaway to view the solar eclipse ended in tragedy. Police say Dr. Monika Woroniecka was riding in an Airstream camper that was being towed by her husband. Suddenly, a gust of wind blew open the passenger side door. Woroniecka was thrown onto the road as her family watched in horror. It's illegal to ride in travel trailers in 39 states, including New York. Airstream released a statement saying, "The safety protocol advises owners that they cannot tow an airstream with people inside."

Back in the early 1970's, when our family was taking a cross country trip with a trailer, my dad & mom had to constantly refuse my requests to ride in the trailer when we were on the road, citing laws & safety concerns. Mind you, this was before mandatory seatbelt usage was required! I mention this to show that the idea of riding in a trailer being pulled was not considered a smart move, even decades ago.

1:11 His Airstream, the Basecamp, is safer. Notice the door swings to his right when entering? If he were driving forward, the force of the wind would help push the door closed.
Monika Woroniecki's airstream, the Bambi, has a door that opens on the opposite side and, when ajar, swings towards the rear of the vehicle. This means that if the door is ajar and the vehicle iss moving forward, the wind pushes against the door, making in more difficult to close.
It's quite possible she'd still be alive if she were in an Airstream Basecamp, like Mr. Vivanco's, rather than an Airstream Bambi.
