Doctor Dies After Falling Out of Moving Airstream Trailer

- A fun family getaway to view the solar eclipse ended in tragedy. Police say Dr. Monika Woroniecka was riding in an Airstream camper that was being towed by her husband. Suddenly, a gust of wind blew open the passenger side door. Woroniecka was thrown onto the road as her family watched in horror. It's illegal to ride in travel trailers in 39 states, including New York. Airstream released a statement saying, "The safety protocol advises owners that they cannot tow an airstream with people inside."

Nah. She handled it well, and she didn't mind.
My condolences to the family. Maybe she felt by speaking on her last personal recollection of events with her mother, that it may bring public awareness to the dangers associated with riding inside of one.
This happened less than 24 hours ago and Inside Edition has a full story complete with family photos and interviews. Very strange.

You'd also think as a doctor, she would have recognized the danger of traveling in a trailer at highway speeds.

@@mrquirky3626 She's a doctor, not a mechanic.
Back in the early 1970's, when our family was taking a cross country trip with a trailer, my dad & mom had to constantly refuse my requests to ride in the trailer when we were on the road, citing laws & safety concerns. Mind you, this was before mandatory seatbelt usage was required! I mention this to show that the idea of riding in a trailer being pulled was not considered a smart move, even decades ago.
It was illegal in the 1970’s.
Yes exactly! It’s a little amazing that someone so educated would make that critical error. It’s a tragic unnecessary accident.
Hahahaha! Same! I'd BEG them and they said no.
It just sounds like common sense!
Stunning that a doctor doesn't/didn't know its illegal to be in a towed vehicle.

So sad she died from this. My condolences to the family. I wish trailers were safe to ride, but it can’t always be safe sadly. To those who have a trailer regardless of how big or small, please make sure to check the law on what it says based on if it’s legal or illegal to ride it while it’s in motion in your state you live in.
I would check the manufacturer not state law. I mean if you buy this exact airstreams, even if your state allows to travel in it, would you do it even the manufacturer says No?
@@hp4415 if it says to not ride on it, I wouldn’t do it. Safety is always my priority.

I'm sorry for your loss.
It’s a tragedy, the loss of life, but even a bigger tragedy that they put themselves in this position. Why on earth would you want to ride in the airstream when a truck is much safer.
When I was traveling to NYC a few weeks ago, on the GWB, I noticed an airstream on the bridge and the door kept opening and it waa worst once on the i95, the lady had to get out multiple times from the pick up truck to close the door.

Trailers aren’t like motor homes
To be honest I don't think they're any safer. Seen too many videos of them just disintegrating in even relatively minor accidents.
Why? If you aren't wearing a seat belt in either...doesn't matter. Only difference is a motor up front. Anyone sitting in back isnt buckled in.
Even motorhomes aren't safe. The driver and passenger will be the first to arrive at the scene.
But the same applies to motor homes, you should not be sitting in the back while driving... Same risks...
If it’s illegal, it’s most likely because they want you safe

1:11 His Airstream, the Basecamp, is safer. Notice the door swings to his right when entering? If he were driving forward, the force of the wind would help push the door closed.
Monika Woroniecki's airstream, the Bambi, has a door that opens on the opposite side and, when ajar, swings towards the rear of the vehicle. This means that if the door is ajar and the vehicle iss moving forward, the wind pushes against the door, making in more difficult to close.
It's quite possible she'd still be alive if she were in an Airstream Basecamp, like Mr. Vivanco's, rather than an Airstream Bambi.
Good points.
That’s weird that all towed campers wouldn’t be designed with the door hinges toward the front. This also seems like common sense.

The fact that it is illegal in NY, but legal in other states should have been enough of a warning of the high risk of catastrophe.
Not really, NY does have some ridiculous laws
Forget the door I would hate for the trailer to come off the hitch with people inside. RIP to that lady!
How could any intelligent human think that it's unsafe to ride inside a car--that has four heavy-duty wheels and airbags and antilock brakes--without being secured with a seat belt, but it's just fine to ride in a 2-wheel trailer that's clanging behind the car and bouncing and swaying along the road? Who cares if it's legal? It's not illegal to juggle chef's knives, either, but I would expect a pediatrician to be smart enough not to do that.
Freak accident? Common sense here.
