We are all happy you made that announcement.
There's nothing worse than someone disliking a channel and just not watching without an announcement.
I often walk into a restaurant and tell the staff I don't care for this type of food and let them all know I won't be eating there. Then I stomp my feet and tell everyone I am preparing to leave in a huff. Sometimes I have to wait until a few people get off break so they can see me stomp out.
      😏
Or sometimes I go to the Mall and announce. I refuse to shop in a particular store because I have no use for the products they sell. I like to search for the stores that sell stuff I don't like and go tell them all about it. I sometimes flail my arms along with feet stomping to dramatize my point (I learned that from a 4 year old throwing a tantrum in a grocery store).
A word of advice. You'll be taken more seriously if you jump up and down and whine.
Good luck to you on your next ' I'm leaving ' announcement. 👍

First arrived in Dumaguete Oct 2022 right after the pandemic. Went on Tinder. First date was a nightmare. Went home to UK after 3 weeks. Got chatting to one of the other girls I liked on Tinder. Returned Jan 21st 2023 to meet her, clicked instantly had the best month of my life there. Returned again in June 2023 and married my now wife at the public wedding which the mayor conducted which was awesome. Flew home after a month. Returned in November 2023 for another month had another awesome time. Returned again in April 2024 spent a month there and brought my wife back to the UK this time and here we are loving our lives. we are both very happily planning our lives here in the UK and may retire in Dumaguete in a decade or 2.
Yes there were a million hurdles and one of Paul’s earlier videos about his wedding and the frustrations he faced getting it to happen I can completely concur with.
    Thank you Dumaguete ❤

I visited Dumaguete briefly at the end of a 2 month trip around the Philippines, 2 years ago just after the pandemic ended.
I found that the girls were indifferent compared to Cebu, Davao, Gensan, and Bantayan. On my second visit to Dumaguete last year, I brought my gf whom I met online and had spent the previous month with on Bohol. I found that to be a much better experience and really enjoyed the town. I would recommend that anyone who likes what Dumaguete has to offer, but cant find a gf, simply go somewhere else to find a girl and after spending a month together in her hometown getting to know her, bring her to Dumaguete. Good luck, and remember what goes round comes round so treat people with dignity and respect and remember you're an ambassador for the country you came from.

I have lived in the philippines over 6 years now and things went back to the way it was before the pandemic in my area. There are actually very few foreigners in this area but it is pretty modern here with great restaurants just like in Duma. The big difference here is that we have an excellent hospital and all major surgeries and medical is available here. It is a quiet hidden gem. Whenever I do see a new foreign face here I get slightly irritated because I don't want it getting ruined like the area you live in. One other big difference is that most foreigner here keep to themselves. You don't see them meeting up at one of the local coffee shops and for the most part you don't see foreigners approaching each other here. I have been approached by other foreigners 3 or 4 times in over 6 years. I like it like that. I watched your and a few other bloggers videos before moving/retiring here and made a good choice to avoid Duma. I know others like it there but I like the quiet of the area I am in.

That's why I had a bf at 26. No mature men available in my place until I finally met one.
Mature men are more calm, wise, dependable, settled, less inclined to hop from one woman to another. Unlike younger ones.

It's been stated that there are approx 4500 expats in the Dumaguete area.
If each one of those guys dates 3,5,10, or 20 Filipinas, the dating pool will become depleted of quality prospects.
Im sure that many of those expats are players and users. Now you have many jaded and disinterested Filipinas.

No bills to speak of other than the light bill, water bill, groceries, property tax etc. we live in a very quiet neighborhood. Wife and I both been to Europe and Southeast Asia ( Bangkok) and southwest asia ( Saudi Arabia, Iraq and Kuwait. There's quite a bit of feminism that has leaked into the Philippines as well. I watched a filipina vlogger interview a couple of Filipinas. They said they didn't need a man, they can make it on their own. That sounds like American feminists.

Great video, however, there is one dynamic that you left out. It is all attributed to social media. In my humble opinion, in these modern times, this is the exterminator of traditional values. It allows women to have access to millions of men around the globe. The countless hours of admiration given to the Filipina. The extreme attention they receive in the comments either by videos or live streams is overwhelming. Constantly hearing, “You are so beautiful” or “I am in love with you” or “give me your cash app so I can send you money”. The heart and kiss emojis from almost every man in the chat. Of course, they are going to ignore the men who are there in person. All women love attention. It causes them to over evaluate themselves. The problems of the West has now made it to the Philippines. And it's going to get worse.

Its no different than a man's favorite secret fishing hole. Once the word gets out that the fish are biting it suddenly gets over-fished and the pond either gets re-stocked with fish or its time to find a new "secret" fishing hole. Believe the Conde Nest article years ago which voted Dumaguete as one of the top places to retire initiated the ex-pat migration to the area. Same thing happened in San Miguel Allende, Mexico which had also been listed by them as one of the top places to retire years earlier. I visited San Miguel Allende last year and found the level of gentrification intolerable. The locals were understandably sullen about losing the ability to live there any longer due to the economic affluence. Sadly when locals move away they take their culture/contributions to the area with them causing the original "vibe" to deteriorate. The Eagles said it best; "call a place paradise and then kiss it goodbye".

Hi Paul, Mrs. Paul and readers. Retired American 68 y.o. here from California vis-a vis Wisconsin. Been in beautiful Valencia West of Duma for two years now. Yes, somewhat frustrating for the single guy. Although not celibate I have not yet met my "match". I do see some pretty candidates frequently while driving or walking around but it's not easy to meet and the best ones are usually already taken -- but that is the case in most of the 25 countries I've visited. There are always other islands or Thailand, Vietnam, Indonesia if one is inclined to travel which I do. Dating sites are hit and miss. Yes, it was better before the pandemic. Yes, some of the expats are gruff and some of that is understandable given that Filipinos do not control their barking dogs or music volume. There are Filipino laws against this but they are largely ignored. The disorganization, long lines and bad roads you just have to put up with. Maybe my attitude and dating prospects will improve when I move to the shoreline of Bacong South of Dumaguete soon. Time will tell. It's still better than what's happening in USA and most of the Western world.

You are a great story teller and living the good life. I spent the past 4 months in the Philippines. While not making it to Dumaguete I did spend time on Bantayan Island. Lovely people. I helped a friend buy a fishing boat (not my money but from a kind sponsor from Oz) and did some glassing and fixing of fishing nets just to pass the time. Squid adobo is a must amongst the locals to offset the copius amounts of Red Horse and sweet breads.
I did venture into Angeles and Subic Bay. Both are dated and cost gouging. Subic Bay establishments are so old and vacant of guests! Angelese is full of Koreans pushing prices through the roof.
Further north, in San Juan, seems to be the hotspot now for tourist development. Not the place to find a long-term lover, but a great spot to invest and cash in on the middle-class from Manila.

She honestly would most likely be someone introduced to me by a friend, or the person who sees me at a restaurant that I frequent, or quite possibly the lady who sits next to me in the pew at church. In the end, if love finds me, I will embrace it with great care, and if it doesn’t… I am generally a very happy person and will definitely be okay. 🙂👍🏻

I live in Dumaguete, and I agree with Paul, but I believe the #1 reason for this change is social media. Filipinas are finding mass attention from all over the world using TikTik and Instagram. This attention has changed their attitudes / they can easily choose a guy for in person, as an LDR, or to make money through online sex or scams.

Amazing, I've been thinking the same thing. I think the cell phone changed people's lives in so many ways. Also the Pandemic caused many business ventures to go bust.
Probably the biggest dating scene problem is that the women are going where the jobs and money are. It's not Dumaguete, but places like Cebu City and the Call Centers.
Nightlife in Dumaguete is almost DOA. The 21 up group is moving out of Dumaguete looking for work. The under 21 are still living at home and going to school. The hot spot is Cebu City if you can get use to traffic everyday.
I personally like the vibe of Dumaguete, but I'm over 65. Davao & Iloilo look like good trending places.
The vibe after the Pandemic caused prices to rise sharply after two years of crazy rules.

Very few goreigners there, but hundreds of university and college girls go there on the weekend nights. Why Not os the opposite in clientele. Yes, only the lady boys are chasing the foreigners indude and outside. Financially independent ladies date with other lsdies, co-workers. They buy their own food and drink. You are right, use the datkng sites and travel to Mindanao, Leyte snd Samar, evem Metro Manila. Find your love and bring her to Dumaguete. Many of the foreigners I met in Valencia had wives or gfs who are from another island or province. However, there are a group of dingle moms who come from the mountain barangays, Bayawan, Siaton looking for old men who can be good providers.

In 2005 to 2009 I had a Yahoo 360 blog with about 85,000 regular readers. I wrote a couple stories about Not being that Ugly-American when traveling. It was because in my world travels as a business guy I would see how some US, UK, and EU guys would talk to and act superior to Filipinos, Thai etc and it drove me nuts. I think some of this is catching up with how people like or avoid some from the West. There was a Vlog on "Earn Lucky Girl" in Thailand and she was blunt: too many foreigners coming without any money to support themselves. Mostly backpackers and younger to the 40's but same idea. I thought it would be common sense, but when you go to another country and meet the people there. It is their country so respect their culture, their way of life and don't try to impose what you were escaping back home. Happy Trails

One said his children can't afford to buy land now because of the foreigners paying high prices for land only to squeeze out the locals. Talk to a local Filipino dude.

I'm only 42 but am scouting out the Philippines as a place to retire to. After this trip, I'm planning to come back next spring to stay for a year before I make a final decision.

It's nice to see someone acknowledging something that I think is obvious but few people talk about. The pandemic changed things, everywhere. Young people now in their early twenties had their lives come to a halt while they were still developing living skills. After 2 to 3 years of classrooms on Zoom, they're busting out. Lockdowns effected everybody. But they were part of college aged kids' development. It's not unusual to see change everywhere after a global plague.

Hi Paul, I absolutely agree with you about Dumaguete. I was there for the month of January this year, 2024. I have rarely felt so belittled and disrespected in my life. From the menacing, armed bank guards to my rude front-desk hotel clerk, the flippant baristas in coffee shops to the people walking on the Rizal board walk who refused to make eye contact and practically sneered at me the foreign guy. I felt like the only time people were half-way nice, or even just decent to me was when a potential tip or gratuity was involved.
After a month there and after I left I came to the same conclusion that you do; some, perhaps many of my American predecessors had been rude, obnoxious *ssholes lording it over the natives (not unlike Joseph Conrad's Lord Jim perhaps?)
I remember one afternoon I was in a coffee shop and this wreck of an older American white guy came in with his Filippina partner quietly at first. But the moment they took a table and sat down this guy started berating and excoriating his partner seemingly to make a public scene to humiliate her. The woman got up and left. I don't recall if she ever came back.
Perhaps multiply or extrapolate that out by thousands and it's easy to see why Americans are often despised.
Why do the worst sort of "slime-balls" (I want to say *ssholes but I'm trying to not be rude) gravitate to places like the Philippines? Maybe the same bad, obnoxious, entitled attitude that kept them single at home is what drives them to places like the Philippines seeking companionship?
By the way your wife is delightfully sweet and charming. You are fortunate to have found her. And you are a very articulate intelligent guy who, unlike a lot of vloggers, has meaningfully intelligent information for your viewers.
    Best regards, Tom

Was in bogarts bar in February and can confirm the level of bad behavior from foreigners of a certain country i shall not name but far out numbered the rest from other countries, were terrible in their manner! Talk about a sense of (im not sure of which) inflated ego because of their money went further being in the Philippines or just a sense of entitlement but FFS was hard to listen to. I went back the next afternoon after for a well earned beer and the same crowed was there and there were a few of them!, never went back. If they were expats and not travelers and they were a large demographic of Dumaguete Expats then that place is definitely not for me unfortunately. Yes i could avoid them, but you end up running into the disrespectful loud mouths at every turn!

I would think the dynamics are changing for the whole of the Philippines. Just look at the number of well-known RUclipsrs who have gotten into legal or financial trouble in just the last few months. Makes no sense to me to jump ship from the states with the odds of life endangering problems becoming the norm rather than the oddity. Granted, I decided against it long ago, but I can't imagine I'm the only one still watching who sees this trend worsening.

I heartily agree with your assessment of Dumaguete, even being here just 2 weeks. In past years, even a decade or more ago, if I ventured away from Central Luzon, heading into the provinces in the Visayas or Mindanao... I truly felt like a novelty or a spectacle to most Filipinos. Now fast forward to my return in February 2024 & I can state this for the record: In the 3 months I have been in the Philippines, I have only heard ONE vocal comment from a youngster here shouting out, "Hey, Joe!". In 2007-2012, I should attest to your viewers that this phrase was one of the most annoying things I was forced to accept and tolerate from curious Filipinos. I would hear that phrase numerous times a day as I would venture out into the streets. For the previous 2 1/2 months of this year I was in Angeles City. By comparison to Dumaguete in Angeles felt more like I was just a part of the local landscape. Here in Dumaguete, where the locals are much more friendly and do smile back when you make eye contact, I feel a welcome sense of acceptance here. My girlfriend lives in Metro Manila, but as the end of the school year approaches, she has her heart set on joining me in Dumaguete with her son of 9, who I literally watched grow-up from infancy. Like a freshly minted coin soon becomes dull and faded, I honestly feel a comfort in realizing the luster of being a foreigner has faded for me here. Dumaguete seems to have much of what appeals to both my needs and sensibilities as I re-enter the Filipino culture after years of being away. Guys, if you are coming to Dumaguete to meet girls and you do not already have a relationship with a local girl in Negros Oriental, I would suggest you head to other places to find wide-eyed Filipinas who will be mesmerized by your shiny, new appearance! Dumaguete has more of a family/social atmosphere. Apparently the party HERE is a ferry ride away over on Siquijor Island. If you are hellbent on feeling like that shiny coin, then you might consider delving deep into the provinces of the Bicol Region, or Samar, Leyte and much of Mindanao. If you come to the Philippines, I wish you great success if your goal is to begin a new life here.

This is a complicated topic and one that certainly doesn’t bode well for you, me, or the others in Duma and the surrounding area. You danced around it with several things that you said. Too many ex-pats have come, and of those too many have behaved poorly, but the last and most significant aspect is that there has become a flood of RUclips vloggers. Don’t take it personally, Paul! People like me are enabling you by leaving comments, so I am part of the problem too. Over exposure to a once sleepy area on a global platform and BOOM! It's caused every curious round-eye to come and find out what’s happening. In all it is not as bad as I am painting it. But it does mean that Duma has changed and unfortunately it can’t revert back. I just hope that it doesn’t become as bad as Angeles. IRT Siquijor, perhaps Sairgao will draw some of the beatniks away. So where is the best place to go? If I knew, I certainly wouldn’t put it on the Internet. Here ended my lesson. ☮️🇺🇸🇵🇭

If you are going to try online dating, would recommend that you look in the Cebu area as its a major city with a high density of women. When I first was looking online to meet a girl was looking in Thailand because my brother was living there at the time. Was talking to this girl for awhile and realized she was not the one. There just wasn't a lot of Thai girls online but noticed there was a ton more girls from the Philippines online.
So I set my filters for around the Cebu area (just because Manila was a very old US Navy city and didn't want to catch anything going around there) and chatted with a lot of Filipinas and most of them were scammers to be honest but did meet my wife there and feel its the best thing that ever happened to me. That was almost 15 years ago so know things have changed there.

I attended a graduation this past Monday in the city I’m at. There were probably 300 plus people in attendance and I was the only foreigner in attendance. I definitely got a lot of stares and people coming up to talk to me. Dumaguete has lost that curiosity towards foreigners. That can be a good thing or bad thing depending on why you’re here.
