February 24th, 2009 - Jan Koum incorporates WhatsApp in California.
2009 August - WhatsApp 2.0 is released on the App Store for the iPhone.
2009 October - Initial Seed funding.
2009 December - WhatsApp for the iPhone is updated to send photos.
2010 August - WhatsApp support for Android OS is added.
2011 January 21 - Competition with WeChat, a messenger app.
2011 April - $250,000 seed funding In Series A round.
2011 May - Competition with Snapchat.
2012 January 6 - WhatsApp had a huge Security problem.
2012 August - WhatsApp announces new 'encryption' software.
2013 February - WhatsApp's user base swells to about 200 million active users and its staff to 50.
2013 July - WhatsApp values at $1.5 billion.
2013 July 16 -WhatsApp goes free, with an annual subscription fee of $1 after the first year.
2013 August - Competition with Telegram.
2013 August - WhatsApp introduces voice messaging.
2014 February 19 - Facebook, Inc. announces its acquisition of WhatsApp for US$19 billion.
2014 November - WhatsApp introduces a feature named Read Receipts.
2015 January 21 - WhatsApp launches WhatsApp Web.
2015 January 21 - WhatsApp announces its policy on cracking down on 3rd-party clients, including WhatsApp+.
2015 March - Added voice calls between two accounts.
2015 December - WhatsApp is briefly shut down in Brazil.
2016 January 18 - Jan Koum announces that WhatsApp will no longer charge its users a $1 annual subscription fee.
2016 March 2 - WhatsApp introduces its document-sharing feature.
2016 April 5 - Introduction of 'end to end encryption'.
2016 November - Added video calls between two accounts.
2018 July - Added group voice and video calls for up to four accounts.
