My dad started me on fly fishing and tying flies when I was about eight. Catching a fish on something that you made yourself is a different kind of joy.
You guys are striking gold. I love making my own plastic and lead but amazed about how few people know about shooting plastic lures. Meateater has all our backs and I can’t thank them enough. Watching my kids catch crappie on my hand made road runners is incredibly fulfilling!
Gold eyes are about to start running on the Winnipeg river. Smoked gold eye is the absolute best thing in any of our waters. Literally amazing. Two foot plung bonnet with like a #2 snell and a chunk of a crawler. It’s a blast, great for kids and when your on them you bang em
I want to see Aaron join Jay on a MeatEater special 39hours vs. Steve and another legend vs. Cal with another legend. Don’t let that statement detract from how great Jay’s videos are.
This is hands down the best fishing video I have ever seen. Making your own lures, cooking fish that you caught, and fishing on a boat. What more could you ask for in a video. I think you guys are going to turn a lot of people on to making their own lures.
I initially bounced off this series for some reason, but glad I came back to it. Loving the series even though I'm the world's fourth most reluctant fisherman.
I've dabbled in the art of making soft plastic lures a bit. Its definitely a skill worth knowing for the serious fisherman. I would suggest starting with open pour molds, since its simpler and cheaper to get into. The only tools you need are a cheap microwave to melt the plastic, an old glass measuring cup, something to stir with, and the molds. No need for any of the injector stuff. The downside is you have to pour each lure individually and it is harder to get multicolor lures to laminate properly. If you get the injector stuff, you need more tools and are more limited in what patterns are possible, but its easier to use. I haven't made any lures in a year or so because of financial pressure. I want to get an injection setup for the increased production, but I can't afford it right now.
You are so fortunate to have quality waters to fish. We hav lots of lakes here in Michigan that sportsmen dollars pay to stock. Soon as the fish are legal size the tribe comes with their nets and clean out the lake. That’s a fact.
Meateater hasn't had a bad series yet. I absolutely love them all. I started out with Steve and meateater original on danger tv.. and watched it grow. All these shows are nothing without the hosts. Steve, Janis, Ryan, Mark, Jay, Joe. And any others I may have forgotten. To all of you. Thanks from the bottom of my heart. When is Joe coming back. Love his humor and knowledge. Wouldn't mind seeing Joe have a show with Eric from Hooked Up.
Love these videos so much. A lesson, some explanation and success. You are awesome Jay! I used to fish a small lake as a little kid- I loved it. Thanks for taking us along on your passion ride for fishing! 🐟🐟 🥾🥾😎
Went to boundary waters in june on the Minnesota side, they told us to use leeches and slip bobers. Didnt have much luck. Spinners and spoons worked well even with walleye
just started making my own chatterbaits, with store bought trailers. gotta start somewehere. maybe next year i start pouring my own plastic. but i love throwing the chatterbaits I made because its gonna be more special to catch one.
If you’re looking for lead, get ahold of your local service plumber. You might need to take a hammer to their cast iron scrap pile with safety glasses but a lot of lead can be salvaged out of old hub and spigot fittings.
Does the baking at 350 for 20 minutes affect the condition of the hook material? I feel like it could change the structure of the metal from the factory; like hardness or temper?
I wonder why more people in Erie don't use more swimbaits. we use mostly deep divers some people use crawler harnesses like the Erie Deary some spoons as well. but here on the northeast Ohio section of Erie hardly anyone tries this technique.
You can use this technique when the walleye are in the bays but the bulk of the walleye fishing is done in deeper water in Erie. Lake of the woods and Lake Erie are so different it’s hard to compare them. Jay mentioned in the video having trouble working swim baits effectively in deeper water so imagine the difficulty in 30-70ft of water
If you want to see amazing bait making go watch some worlds worst fishing he does amazing soft plastics or Marling baits he does a lot of crazy wood hard baits but does some plastics too.
Just heard the oven ding, so that means our jigs are good to go (grabs 350 degree oven rack with bare hands). Sorry Jay but something seems .... fishy... here. (12 minute mark)
@@JaySiemens I understand that. But that temperature should have also burned the hell out of your hand when you grabbed the rack. I'm just teasing you id imagine there needs to be controls for filming. But i would guess those jigs you pulled out had already been completed before filming began or something took way longer while filming and they sat in the oven for a while and had cooled down. But when my lasagna is done, i don't use my bare hands to pull the rack out. I use oven mits. because.... heat. Again just bugging, great video, that just made me chuckle is all.
Absolutely love the variety of content that MeatEater is putting out
Me too I'm Glade rinella has a Netflix deal but I miss his you tube vids

Dentists love it too!

Could have one guy with Jay and the other with Aaron, 2v2 ?
Best Canadian Angle episode yet.
Jay is the perfect fishing buddy. Very creative friendly and social.

I’ve been DYING to get into this! Thanks for the video! The channel is killing it!
You are the man.
What a treat this was. Reminds me of when I was a kid. Thanks a million for sharing.
Great job Jay! Love the drone shots and all the amazing golden hour shots after diner! Love it!
The luremaking segment was super interesting.

They need to start back up the Bent podcast. I miss that show.

Nothing beats fishing, except maybe hunting.
Marling Baits would like to have a word…
Love fishing in Ontario
Loving the flag on your left sleeve!🇺🇸🇺🇸
Dear Jay:
Please come organize my garage, basement, boat, fishing and hunting equipment.
Sincerely,
Mike in Wisco

I like that shirt I want a black meateater hoodie
Terrific show. Where did you find the bump board and gas stove.
"I just heard the 350°F oven ding."
*Reaches in and grabs hook bare handed....

@@samsherdhaliwal9265 yeah true. but I'm going to try it pier fishing in Lorain we catch em pretty shallow at night. I'll let you know if it works
What happened to the mullet?
This may be a dumb question....but are you on the English river and if so are you on Abraham....it just looked exact to where I fished for 15 yrs
Great episode! One more safety item for lead work is shoes. Don't do this in sandals or barefoot.
Nice jays on meat eater...... where's Steve?
Jay, what are your thoughts on dry aged fish? Saw a youtube video on it once, seems interesting!
I worked in a pead refinery for years, so I was able to get 50kg pigs anytime I wanted. I have enough for a lifetime
I cannot recommend “Marling Baits” YT channel highly enough for anyone who enjoyed this videos topic.
Franks: He puts that shit on everything.
So you don’t heat your molds up before putting lead in them?
Sometimes!
What style of costa are those
Does jay have his own RUclips or anything?
Yes, he has an awesome RUclips channel! Just search Jay Siemens on RUclips, and you'll find it.
Happy Canada Day btw! 🇨🇦
Jay does have a youtube channel but Sam is the real star, Jay is ok also.🙂
Life
oh.. my wife is gonna kill me.. lol
If you want to see amazing bait making go watch some worlds worst fishing he does amazing soft plastics or Marling baits he does a lot of crazy wood hard baits but does some plastics too.
Crazy glue? I only know Manny glue
🇧🇷👍

The paint is already coating the lead, that temperate cures the paint on the outside of the jig.
