    • @Aladato
      @Aladato Год назад +16

      @@carnage0685 I have to agree. They didn't manage to flesh out Ganondorf like they did the Calamity.
      Most people in that world never even knew there was a Ganondorf causing problems, I don't think.
      After the end of the Calamity, people were empowered by Zelda to rebuild and fight back, and in this sense, the surface of TotK belongs to BotW.

    • @carnage0685
      @carnage0685 Год назад +19

      @@Aladato Yup. I mean, I like all the cutscenes with Ganondorf, he's powerful, cunning, and imposing, but that's only in the past. He just doesn't have the same presence that the Calamity had. The Divine Beasts could be seen from a mile away, and each of them, to me at least, kind of served as a reminder of the Champion who had been lost inside them. It wouldn't have meant anything if it weren't for the fact that they were all fleshed out pretty damn well. They were all likable characters, and because of Ganon they're all fucking dead and the machines they once piloted still run amok.
      All of the affected regions felt like they were in a crisis- The only region that felt like it was in a crisis in TOTK was Lanayru, or more specifically Zora's Domain. The goop was legitimately threatening their lives.
      There's also the fact that Malice was a lot more present in the overworld- It felt a lot more invasive than Gloom did.
      Something I actually despise is how almost everyone these days is trying to downplay Calamity Ganon as a threat. "omg Ganondorf is so powerful, Calamity Ganon was just a fraction of his power!" when like, the only reason Ganondorf was able to break free was because of the destruction the most recent Calamity caused. Idk, I guess people just like to flock to the newest thing for the sake of it being new.

    TOTK is objectively a better game in pretty much every way. But BOTW had the same essence SIX YEARS AGO. Everything about BOTW was so novel at a foundational level. TOTK took it and improved on it, but the first time experiences in BOTW will be ingrained in me for the rest of my life. When BOTW came out, I remember even journalists saying "this is the best game ever made, full stop." TOTK's biggest flaw is that it lacks the novelty BOTW had.

    • @Jexonite
      @Jexonite  Год назад +34

      It's fun to think about that. When BOTW came out and for many years after, it held this "greatest game ever" status amongst a lot of people, but with TOTK, so much has been improved that it's hard to look at it in the same way. I love that they were able to carry this world so much further in what they were able to do with it. Also, it is a MIRACLE that this game even runs on that console!

    Tbh, altough I prefer the aesthetic of the old shrines, and the tests of strength over the proving grounds (cuz don't tell me they aren't parallels), I had a lot of fun while playing TotK shrines compared to my experience in the BotW shrines. Altough, I haven't played BotW NEARLY as much as I played TotK (respectively, I spent 50 and 200 hours on each), and got a lot more stuff on TotK, but overall I think the zonai abilities made for much creative and challenging shrines. Every time I found a way to cheese the shrine that was actually harder than the intended way (most of wich involved rewind and really good timing) I felt amazing, and I felt that much more often then when I did the same thing in BotW.
    But yeah, the champion's abilities are ABSOLUTELY better

      @@therichman3685no it's true. The games are very different and have there on pros and cons. TotK is BOTW with new runes, 1 1/2 new areas to explore, and a shit ton of fetch quests. BoTW's runes created very stable, useful and satisfying glitches in game which made combat and traversal better than TotK. Those were the 2 things I enjoyed most about BOTW so when I figured out you couldn't even crouch cancel anymore it just took a lot of the fun away.
      147 Bubbul Gems for one armor set (the sentimental aspect gives it all it's value outside of aesthetics), 157 shrines for another armor set that does the same thing as the last all shrine armor set, 120 Lightroot for a medal, horse armor locked behind stable visit system. And there's more but without the tedious filler content ToTK is pretty much just a bigger BoTW with new runes and less versatile and useful glitches. Agree that shrines in BotW and "sage" abilities are better. I'd add a few things:
    1) I HATE WHAT THEY DID TO WEAPONS IN TOTK!!!!! I went back and replayed BotW right after finishing TotK, and the gameplay in BotW just felt more rewarding because enemies drop good weapons that get better the more you play. In TotK, it took forever for me to figure out how to get "pristine" weapons that I wanted, and even then, it was a horrible experience because it's RANDOM. In BotW, there are reliable respawn points for good weapons, not to mention that enemies drop the good stuff and the more you play the better that good stuff gets. So I was excitedly going to fight a half dozen Lynels EVERY SINGLE BLOOD MOON all the way until I'd finished everything except Ganon because I wanted to get a +20 attack Lynel sword. But in TotK, I avoided fighting as much as possible because I didn't want to break my weapons and then have to go searching through the horrid random system again. This single reason almost completely ruins TotK for me.
    2) Towers were more challenging in BotW. There were a number of towers in BotW that I died repeatedly trying to figure out how to get to the top of, and it took a lot of careful planning to finally figure out how to do them.
    3) The temples in BotW were better. Changing the rotation of the camel, the tilt of the giant bird, etc. - those were really interesting puzzles. The puzzles in the TotK temples just weren't that interesting.

    • @stephaniethebatter7975
      @stephaniethebatter7975 Год назад +1

      @@dinoman6481 Okay there's just one small problem with your argument. And that's the fact that ToTK is a game where there are generally multiple ways to achieve the same thing, all of which have their pros and cons.
      For example, if Revali's Gale returned to ToTK it would probably be free to use once unlocked - no resources needed. But at the cost of being on a cooldown timer so you wouldn't be able to use it all the time. Whereas a single spring, while it has no cooldown, would require you to have a spring in your inventory or you manage to find one out in the wild every time you want to use it.
      If Revali's Gale returned to ToTK, it'd be mostly redundant and very situational at worst. At best, it'd be incredibly useful for specific circumstances or even work alongside other methods for even more effectiveness. Hell, I even made a joke that Revali and Tulin need to meet and combine their powers in an earlier reply.

    There is one good thing about the Blights. The Blight battles were *battles.* They were no-frills, “I attack you while you try to attack me” kinds of fights. TotK reverts back to the classic style of Zelda boss, making them like a living puzzle, “Look! Here’s my weak spot! Look!” kind of deal. Whichever approach is better is in the eye of the beholder.

    I don't know... I realise it probably sounds daft, but I kind of enjoyed some of the emptiness of BotW! It made it more chilled. I'd walk Link miles, find myself on the top of a mountain and just delight in the beauty of the sunset. It was, as you said, about exploring. TotK is always, constantly trying to give you something to do. You'll set out on a specific quest and end up doing 150 things before you get there, which obviously is fantastic from a gameplay/value for money perspective, but is not such a chilled experience. Some have said this game is harder though... I'm not sure about that side of it. It is certainly harder at first, but once you've got more hearts and mastered the abilities, I would say it's on par difficulty wise. Maybe BotW is slightly easier as there is less to do! Though you did have the guardians, don't miss those. Lol.
    aaand I'm not crazy about the depths, forgot to mention that part. I personally don't really think they add anything much to the game, in fact you could probably complete the game without even bothering with it and I just don't find stumbling around in complete darkness that much fun myself. 🤷 But I'm not anti TotK, it is a better game in general overall, but I certainly don't think it makes its predecessor, or for that matter previous Zelda games obsolete.

It allowed people to beat the shrine how they want. There were people that wanted to get it done quickly and do whatever they had to in order to complete it. Then you have purist, like myself, that tried to beat them the way they seem intended. So I am good with the way TotK did this. I DO agree that the look was better in BotW though.

    After I played through and finished everything I wanted to do in TotK, it actually made me want to keep playing zelda. I had a trip coming up, and had still never played master mode in BotW, so I went and started that. Though I did spend like two days getting the master cycle as early as I easily could, just to make travel faster and more fun. It honestly elevated the experience of a second playthrough of BotW by 10.
    The game was definitely easier to complete with all of the shrines done a second time round, and turning off the Sheikah sensor was the best choice I made by far. It was interesting to recognize npc's from TotK because that didn't really happen the other way around. And what you said really summarizes BotW. It's a lot of empty wandering between places, taking in the sights, but it really just keeps you moving. TotK makes you stay in one place for longer, which isn't a bad thing. They both have their place, but I don't think I'll be replaying BotW again, at least not any time soon.

    Mipha's grace, you can obviously have a bunch of fairies and then eat (not as convenient though I know).
    The Lightning armour set basically gives you Urbosa's fury if you charge your weapon. And that has no cooldown. You just need a weapon.

    totk is not easy to jump into as botw. The great sky island and great plateau we can argue are about the same experience - but while in botw you are loosely directed towards Kakariko, you have the means to go anywhere.
    In totk, you are forced to do more investigative work around Lookout Landing before having access to essentials like the sail cloth.
    On top of that, the excess of caves and wandering in the depths gets pretty stale very quickly because what you do down there is usually rinse and repeat (break boulders, break ore, get lightroot - No significant reward).
    This is where it begins to feel hollow. My 2nd replay of totk was me just creating a hoverbike in most situations and just going over places in a mechanical fashion.
    I've replayed botw at least 10 times and that's thanks to its tutorial where I'll gain all the powers I need to explore the world in the first hour or so. Without any "Zelda sightings" obnoxious quests and a bloat load of other quests which makes you feel like there is a lot to do... but it's all for nothing really.
    Most of the sky portions in totk were also boring and time consuming. The zonai devices unnecessary to progress the game. And the disposable nature of crafted zonai machines also adds to the hollowness. (It definitely felt pointless after creating my first jeep and going into a shrine for 5 mins, and that thing disappears)

      Plus, if they were going to be truly successful, they'd force you to explore the whole thing with various challenges before you're even allowed to unlock the beast control from the map terminal.

    Having put.... umm... lets say "many" hours into both games, I started playing BOTW from the beginning again the other day; that opening scene when you leave the shrine of resurrection to an orchestral swell while the title is revealed and you get a panoramic shot of the plateau and points beyond still hits even though I've already thoroughly explored Hyrule (as well as the sky islands & depths in TOTK). TOTK did one-up it though, they bookended the game with a similar orchestral swell, sense of wonder & emotional pull.
    Rivalis gale can be simulated with a rocket shield (or a spring placed on the ground); I do miss Urbosas fury though, one of the most satisfying AOE attacks.
    TOTK was designed for the switch hardware, where BOTW was designed for the Wii U hardware and it shows. Both games are peak utilization for their hardware, with TOTK having the leg up of better hardware, but both games have exceptionally good story writing and gameplay mechanics that are independent of the hardware; that is why Switch continues to sell really well even though it's hardware is inferior to the competition - the story writing and gameplay of their first party games is simply unmatched on other systems.
    When I fought the Colgera in the air temple for the first time I ran out of arrows in the second phase; I remembered that earlier in the game (and while in the temple itself) stepping on ice would make it crack and eventually break, so I took a chance by diving through it's back panels when they were exposed, and sure enough, I got to finish the fight without arrows; it's one of the things I love about the game, there are multiple ways to achieve a goal; I deliberately try not to "cheese" the game though, as I enjoy the challenge certain enemies bring.... Lynels are still the toughest enemy in my opinion, they are a combination of hard-hitting & tanky while being agile, and have an AOE close range attack to prevent you from just hiding under them and wailing away (like I do to Moblins).
    I have played LOZ games since NES, I missed Majoras Mask through Skyward sword, so I'm playing catch up on those titles (played links awakening a bit back, currently playing skyward sword, also picked up a copy of twilight princess FOR THE Wii!!! that is on deck next; I'm trying to figure out how to play Windwaker without buying a game cube copy & controller for my Wii because they are going for stupid money currently).

    tbh i think that revali's champion skill is kinda redundant in totk, mainly because there's so many ways to get up vertically now. rocket shields, ascend, over-engineered zonai launchers, etc.
    but him himself? definitely miss that dilf

    Even though it's not that old, Breath of the Wild has that nostalgia value to it that ToTK may never have. I made so many memories playing that game, like getting my first Boko club and then completing the game for the first time. Breath of the Wild holds a special place in my heart, it's hard putting something on top of it.

    I am finding the sages annoying in TotK, they're in your way when you don't want them, and you have to chase after them when you do want them.
    I'm constantly turning different ones on or off situationally, and that requirement breaks the immersion.

    You can go back to botw, i just did, you only have to mod it and then its fun. Best mods are : Zelda's Ballad, Zelda's Ballad dialogue and cutcsene audio fix, girly animations pack and why not the short hair hood mod wich replaces the hairstyle she has in botw with the one she has in totk.

    Getting close to the end of ToTK and aside from the fuse/building mechanics, it feels very much like a reskin of BoTW. I had just assumed there would be more things different about Tears as compared to Breath. If there is another follow-on that is just as formulaic, I may not jump on it right at release day. These are very enjoyable games but I have a few gripes about them having now essentially played through both.
    The grinding for materials as well as the weapons breaking is tedious and in my opinion doesn't add anything to the game. Thankfully I didn't update the software for Tears and could do the drop-repro glitch for materials and zonai devices. The need to excessively farm doesn't make a game good. The broken weapons mechanic wouldn't be as bad if they lasted longer before they broke, and were easier to repair. I also thought Tears went crazy on the amount of content with the added underworld, NPCs and side quests -- it got to the point where I was just tired of it all. Gathering the kurok seeds is pretty tedious as well -- just to get a decent number of slots for weapons/armor.
    In the pro's column, I loved the shrine puzzles and navigating the sky island realm was great. The fuse and device-building concept was wild but once again upgrading the battery so it lasted long enough was annoying without duplication glitches.

    No, Totk does not do everything better.
    Botw is the real open world. That world was created to traverse by walking, running and climbing. It wasn't created to use vehicles and it shows: since some vehicles are highly effective in traversing distances, they had to limit them in other ways... annoying ways. I still prefer horses to vehicles, since I can go in a shrine, go a major distance or even save-reload my game and my horse will still be there. That's not the case with vehicles.
    Botw had the correct size. It was a huge world, but it was manageable. Totk is the same world + depths + some sky islands. Is way too much content that ironically produces an overwhelming effect on the player.
    Sure, totk is now "more fun"... but have you ever thought about what they give to make it more fun? They knew they would be using the same world as a base, so the fun of exploration is gone. So they focused instead on making fun mechanics and allowing us to "break" things a little more. And while I admit it does make for a highly fun game, they still ended taking away the very main and core concept of the Zelda franchise: the exploration.
    They tried to fix it with depths and sky islands, but those were not enough to remove the feeling that you are in fact exploring - again - the same old world.
    So please, let's appreaciate the og a little more!

    I love Botw and I love Totk. The first experience with Botw was incredible and it is one of the best games ever released. BUT because of Totk, which is better than its predecessor in every way, I think it's really outdated now. If I had to recommend one of the two to someone, it would always be Totk.

    I think BOTW is better in almost every way, the the mechanics on TOTK is so complicated and stupid, not saying TOTK is a bad game, but it's very inferior to BOTW.
    One of the most disappointing things about TOTK, it''s the exploration, the map feel so empty, the map was specifically made for BOTW, so you had some really cool missions to find, like the dragon stuck on the moutain, or terrey town, or even the satori moutain, or Kilton, on TOTK you don't find ANYTHING memorable, it's just a bunch of NPCs asking for favors, the caves are also so disapointing, there is nothing there, just rocks, or maybe a shrine.
    The koroks were these little fun challenge puzzles on BOTW, on TOTK you have to stop your progress to buid something to give a ride for the korok, and THAT'S NOT FUN, THAT BORING, the memories was also these interesting mission on BOTW, that kinda fit to the story, you had on picture, and you actually had to explore to find it, on TOTK "here a point on the map, just go there".
    The shrines as you mentioned, it was also better on BOTW, because they were actually puzzles, on TOTK is like, "just get to the end", itt feels more like a platform game than a puzzle.
    Also in BOTW you had these places specifically made for shrines, like the two ring region or Master of the Wind Quest region, they all serve a pupose, now on TOTK they are still there, but now they are just rocks, the map does not feel like is important anymore.
    Btw, the bosses are better in BOTW, on TOTK, the bosses just stand there waiting for you to attack them, they don't do anything, they just trow tornados at you, come on, be honest, they are easy and boring, on BOTW they actually attack you, they had some really cool attacks and you had to think fast about what you had to do, in terms of gameplay, BOTW bosses are A LOT better, on TOTK you also have more of a "right way" to fight the bosses, on BOTW you just fight with whatever you want.
    the deaphs are also so terrible in this game, there is literally 3 missions on that entire map, the rest is just a bunch of copy and past content, come on, TOTK also there is no enemies variety as you mention, they re use the same enemies from BOTW, and the new one gets old pretty fast, BOTW also had the same problema, but at least in the first hours of the game you got supreized by some enemies like the mouduga, or a lynel, on TOTK the only enemie tha suprized me was the dragon, and even that gets old pretty fast.
    Anyway, I like TOTK, but I don't know, I honestly can't see the "emprovements" that people talk about on TOTK, everything is a worse version of what BOTW did.

      That's still a poor excuse for many shortcuts they've given because Nintendo has always catered to new gamers each Zelda game. A good game should properly have you master it across the whole playthrough.
