Ball State player gets obliterated

- During the college football game between Georgia State and Ball State, a Ball State player got destroyed on a block by a Georgia State player in the first quarter. His mouth piece went flying out and he was down for a while but eventually got up and was able to walk off the field. Initially, Georgia State was called for a targeting penalty but after reviewing the play the refs determined it was a blindside block penalty instead. Georgia State went on to dominate Ball State 51-20 and win the 2021 Camellia Bowl.

No, there was no reason to call a penalty. The defender and his tackler both had each other in their view, it just seems that Ball State dude had his attention elsewhere and rightfully got clobbered.

@@trentoncarter9956 He did not lead with his helmet. He led with his shoulder and hit the guy in the chest. What hurt the guy was the whiplash effect. His head snapped forward because of the rapid deceleration of his body and during live play it was close, but the replay clearly showed no targeting or crackback block.
Horrible call. How the announcers (let alone the refs) miss him hitting the guy with his shoulder is beyond me.
The refs didn't miss it that is why they took targeting out.
It's an excellent call. There is argument to be made about helmet to helmet because the blockers helmet does hit the guys face mask enough to turn his head. It was not intentional, but when your head gets jerks sideways, your body naturally follows. This created the situation of a defenseless player. The blocker should've blocked lower or used his arms to block, not attempted to run through him a head level. The penalty call was created for this EXACT reason. Horrible analysis on your part.
Also, I've been hit exactly like this. It's not fun, it caused a concussion, severe whiplash, and a herniated disc. When ignorant people try to say stupid things about let them play, yes, let them ... but do it in a responsible and safe way, not attempting to murder the people you play against. I had the most career INTs and was 11 tackles away from the most career tackles in the state with 8 games remaining. I set a single game TD record and career scoring for a defender. I was no slouch, but it took one hit to ruin my future and my scholarship hopes.

@@spi6455 after the play was reviewed they came to the conclusion that it was not targeting. So the refs got it wrong. You are correct, we need to protect players but that was just a good hit that checks all of the boxes on what you are supposed to do. Dont target, don't hit helmet to helmet, don't blindside block. Can't coach a player to make a better block than that.
That was helmet to helmet , and even tho he didn’t “launch “ it was forcible contact to the head . I didn’t agree with all these new targeting rules, I prefer the old school way. It was a bad call
Agreed ... the blind side rule as written in the league I officiate specifies that the direction of travel is parallel to or towards the blockers' own endzone. This blocker is going up field. Not a blindside block unless this US College rule book has vastly different wording.
You could also tell it wasn't helmet to helmet contact by the way the defender's helmet moved as soon as the hit was made... it snapped towards the blocker. A forceful hit to the head makes it snap away from the blocker.
@@Hassy171717 You've described a peelback block, which is only illegal in NCAA rules if it's below the waist. This is a blindside block as it's forcible contact made from outside the opponents field of vision - he's focused on the ball carrier and doing see him coming until the last moment.
Field of vision?... he hit him straight in the chest. The fact the defender didn't look 10 degrees to his left makes the hit illegal? In honor of Madden.....where'd that truck come from!?!?!
Not sure what they're looking at but there was no helmet to helmet here. The guys head moves freely toward the blocker. It was all shoulder.
This is a perfect example of targeting as a broadcasting-driven penalty. Overturning was the proper decision, assessing a PF for a blindside block was not. Throwing a block while running in the same direction as the ball carrier and the defender cannot, by definition, be a blindside block. It is abundantly clear that the blocker made contact with his shoulder pads (and made a conscious decision to avoid anything approaching targeting). The defender's head snapping back as it did is simply a matter of physics. In this one play we have a bad call, followed by a good call, followed by a bad call. This clip doesn't show how bad the broadcasters hyped the targeting because it is edited to show only the highlights of the play/call. It was even worse live.
I guess "Blind side" now means anyone not approaching at 12 o'clock. Do you have to declare prior to the snap which player you plan on blocking too? In written form?
R.I.P to the defensive players mouth piece!! 💀 ☠ 💀
Throw the flag!! He's playing football!! WTF is he thinking?!?! Lol smh 🤦
Are these announcers blind? He clearly hit him with his left shoulder.
True, although it is worth noting that shoulder to head contact could be targeting if the player was determined to be in a defenseless state, like in the case of a blind side block. That is likely what the original call was for.
They had too much ego to admit that their initial belief was wrong. Smh...
Great block in my opinion. The defender saw the block coming and let up before getting crushed. I'm not sure what the guys in the booth are looking at but there was no helmet to helmet contact.
“Helmet to helmet to contact” literally hits dude right in the chest lol and how is it a blindside block when you block someone from the front?
They threw that flash cause let’s be honest he saw God in that moment 🤣
It is not targeting because the defender is not defenseless and the contact was not helmet to helmet and it is not a blind side block because the Georgia State player is not blocking back towards the opposite end zone, he is blocking forward. It was a big hit, but a clean one.
So….. they tried to toss him for targeting, didn’t get to do thst, it ended up being a penalty for hitting too hard
In no way was that block a penalty, that’s not even a crack back, that’s hussle by the blocker to get ahead of the ball carrier on that. In real time I could tell this wasn’t a targeting call, good clean block!!
Sigh. We used to be taught to “keep your head on a swivel”. It was correctly not ruled targeting as he didn’t lead with, not hit the other players helmet.
That’s shoulder to shoulder hit clearly god I wish the targeting rule would go away it’s so stupid I miss players getting there helmets knocked off im old school so yeah
The announcers have no idea how to play football that was clean he should’ve been paying attention
guy CLEARLY hit him with his shoulder. crackback block is a so-so call, definitely wasn't targeting.
Dude, it’s a clean hit. It’s also a non blindside block, as you can see the defender seeing him at the last second and bracing for impact before getting leveled. It’s not targeting because it’s quite clear that no helmet to helmet contact was visible. The blocker lowered the shoulder on his chest area and let physics do the rest. At this point, they should just make a rule stating “If it looked hard, penalize the man who laid down the hammer.” At least it would make sense.
Definitely not targeting, but felt like the refs wanted a call to justify the flag. That was a grey area as far as blindside blocks go. I've seen similar blocks called for it or not called basically equally as often. My gut says probably it's right, but I think it only got flagged because of how violent it was.
