  • Part 2 of my series reviewing my 58mm lenses. This time it is the Voigtlander 58mm f1,4 Nokton SL ii that gets the attention. As usual its not a very technical review, but rather some general feelings about my time using the lens and why i like it so much. Also of course some photos created with this beautiful lens.

      Heard another one using that combination. It does fill out the whole sensor? Is the vignetting ok without post processing?

    • @Muchtoobizy
      @Muchtoobizy 5 месяцев назад

      @@Nearest_Neighbor No. it doesn’t fill the entire sensor. You will have to crop the image a bit or set the GFX camera to 35mm format. But it’ll give you very nice wide aperture rendering on the GFX.

    Thank you for the over exposure tip. I found that using the front command dial to set aperture increased the iso compared to setting with the aperture ring. This is a better work around versus adjusting EV.

      Hi there :) Thank you for watching and commenting as well! And for your kind words. I will most definitely make a video about the Nikon DF in the future. Its one and still is one of my favorite digital cameras to date. Also there are a few other retro digital cameras i always loved, and one of them is the Fuji X-T1, another one being the Leica Q and Q-P. Do you have any favorite retro styled digital cameras :)?
      I think my next video will be about the Nikon 58mm f1,4 G lens, its probably the one i have used the most on my Nikon Df. Great combo and make wonderful photos together.
      /regards Martin.

    Thank you very much for your fantastic review .
    I had been checking many many photos
    these were taken by Voightlander 58mm f. 1.4
    in these seven years and a half .
    But those were not so good for me .
    But your phots are very impressive .
    And I think I had to buy this .
    When would it come out?
    I couldn’t know it .
    Why ?
    Monetary reason .
    Of my eyesight .
    I own , Ai Nikkor 50mm f. 1.2 .
    T* Planar 50mm f. 1.4 ZF.2 .
    But they don’t fit me .
    Perhaps , I couldn’t get a focus upon
    eyelashes anymore .
    I want this .
    I couldn’t control this .
    I enjoyed this video .
    You made me a dreaming boy .
    Thank you very much .

    I wonder if this is sharper at F1.8 than the Nikon 50mm F1.8 pancake which focuses at 0.45cm

My overall experience on it is that it gives some of the most dreamy beautiful bokeh in the right light and circumstances but might not be the sharpest of most "perfect" when shot wide open. Skin looks very natural and less skin editing is needed.
      I did shoot 2 women with a standard Nikon 50mm and this 58 in the same session.
      The 58mm had much better skin rendering with more shape.
      The disadvantage of ultra sharp lenses is that skin will look bad on these ultra sharp lenses.

    This Nokton matches so well in Nikon df. I pair it with D700 in the past but it won't allow me to meter unless I switch the aperture to smallest f16, i must use the command dial to set the aperture. Can you do that with Nikon df without turning to f16 ? I don't have DSLR anymore nor a mirrorless camera. I now use in my F3 film. I do miss the DSLR and consider nikon df though. If i use it in mirrorless the adaptor will sure add bulkiness to the lens.

    • @martinandreasson5504
      @martinandreasson5504  2 года назад

      It really does Terry :) I like you had it on a D700 as well in the past before selling that, but it seems to work or at least fit the Df even better .
      Yes it seems to work fine, that is how i use mine now, can't recall the exakt setting but just went into menu and changed the setting so that it controls the aperture via the ring on lens instead :) It also seems it solved the OE problem mostly for me like the guys told me it would. Also if i use the 58mm on a film body it seems and i also read that the OE problem is not at all there or not as pronounced , i have no clue as to why that is.
      The F3 i think would be a very nice match for the Nokton! can imagine how well it would balance and work :)
      Yes i never went the Z system rout as i loved my F lenses and Df/D4 too much and was not inspired by the newer bodies at all to be honest. Also like you i shoot film a lot and my digital bodies while used is not used AS much as in the past. But if i use any digital bodde its the DF or my leica M240. Both at least more inspiring and fun to use than any other digital cameras i have used. About adapting i actually also bought a used X-T1 to adapt old Takumar or M42 lenses, that is actually quite a lot of fun too :D /regards Martin.

      @@martinandreasson5504 Thanks for your reply. Nice to hear that the the Nokton 58mm aperture ring works on the Nikon df. I also am not inspired by Nikon Z for its big mount, any SLR lens adpating to nikon Z feels long and imbalance. Z body + Adpator + F-lens won't save any significant weight as well. My lens collection is entirely Zeiss distagon 18mm, 28mm, 50mp, 100mp, Nokton 58mm. Summicron-R 90mm. I like my Nikon F3 with those lens. But in long run, i still need to buy a digital body, film price going crazy these days.

      @@ngterry9653 Yeh that adaptor on the Z system bugged me to begin with, before it came out i was looking forward to something Nikon mirrorless without the adaptor and some retro design hehe...but no ;) And so many were hoping for a Df2....looks like its not in the cards !
      You got some nice lenses there :) Love Zeiss. Yeh The film prices are not going the right direction, im a bit sad i rediscovered film a few years ago after shooting film back in the days, and cameras and film skyrocketing by the month! I had luck getting a few nice film bodies before it went really crazy. But for example the M4 i got for around 1400 EU and sold for 16 like 2 years back is now around 2400..crazy. Im now looking to add a Bessa with are still acceptable and take my leica lenses :)

    • @ngterry9653

      @@martinandreasson5504 I am always so fancy of the Leica M system, but that investment is so huge, not to speak for M10, M11, even a M6 film body cost over 25k USD. If i don't own that collection on Zeiss SLR lens, I might invest on Voigtlander VM lens, perhaps this is a better choice adapting to Mirrorless Z, just a slim enough macro helicoid adapter. But now I am leaning towards the NIkon df, being inspire by you.

    • @martinandreasson5504
      @martinandreasson5504  2 года назад

      @@ngterry9653 Yes i have actually not even considered the newer Leica M bodies. If anything maybe a M2 or something down the line since i miss my M4. But today i actually bought a Bessa R2A with the ability to use my leica lenses and also considering a 35mm voigtlander at some point in the future. So now a nice analog setup which im quite happy about :) Never used the Bessa cameras in past either, so its going to be fun to try that out.
      Thats awesome to hear Terry, the Df after all is such a greta camera. I think its going to become if not already one of those keepers in times ahead. Its already in cult status territory as much as a digital camera can become that in this day and age :) let me know how that goes in the future! Im most likely making a Df review at some point too, as it is one of my favorite cameras ever, /regards Martin.

      Hey Freeman :) Yes i agree, its also a very special lens for me. I was searching a while for what 50mm i wnated both for my film cameras but also the digital Nikons, and did not really find any of the others as fun in character as the 58 Nokton, hence i settled for that instead of the 50mm f1,2 Ai-s etc. And i always felt the newer 50mm f1,4 G lens pretty lackluster for some reason. So im very happy with the 58mm Nokton and actually currently do not own a 50mm lens for Nikon.

      Which Zeiss? :) the Voigtländer is not the sharpest at f1,4 as i say in the video, but in comparison to many vintage lenses shot at f1,4 its better. It reminds me a bit of the Voigtlander 35mm f1,4 to leica M when you shoot it at f1,4...but not as soft :)
