  • Bathroom design involves so many things often coming together in limited space. From showers to soaking tubs to sinks and style, all of it needs to come together in one seamless, efficient and enjoyable space. Some of these details are even more important than what tile to use on the wall versus what tile to use on the floor. Yes... More important! You want to make sure you plan for certain details that once completed, will make your bathroom one of your favourite spaces in your home. Don't take these for granted! You'll be so pleased you planned ahead.

Speaking if lights... Where is the best place to put a vent/fan? We have a beam running down the center of our room (front to back-in 5x8 space, enter on 8'wall,facing dbl vanity, then toilet further on rt and tub), so I thought closest to the entry wall do its not in your line of vision as you enter, but it's also directly in line w toilet (rather than in the shower, because of the rain shower head),but should it be further from the shower so that it is centered in the non-shower space? What rule do you follow?

Well the fan is really meant to remove moisture from the room so I usually try to place it closest to the shower and in such a way that it's closest to the outside wall for exhausting as well. Though the lighting is usually my priority. So inevitably, it's going to be in view. I try to select the 'nicest looking vent' the budget will allow. Hope this helps! And thanks for watching. :)

Appreciate all your fantastic design tips! What city, state do you live/ work?
My home is a small mid century modern split level house in Southern California. The exterior and interior needs painting and I’m stuck on what colors to choose... inside outside flow make it more challenging. And there’s a tiny master bath that needs remodeling too. Thanks great video!

Thanks Linda... I'm based in Toronto, Canada but I'm jealous of your warm weather and your mid century modern aesthetic! Thanks for watching!

Olga, how close can a vanity be to the shower? Maximizing storage means I'm squeezing in a 72" vanity which leaves just 5" to the shower. Shower curtain protects it & perhaps I have a plexiglass shield applied to that side.
In the sketch elevation, it makes the bathroom look bigger. Still good clearance to shower.

Hide your niche--they're pretty only when empty. So tuck it out of sight from the door. Unless you & yours always keep it show-worthy. Then show it off.
