I was pentecostal as a teen. All of my pastors kept god in the center of their marriages. One such pastor murdered his wife and twin daughters after his wife cheated on him.
The following Sunday, the main pastor gave a beautiful eulogy for the murderer, villainized the wife, and breezed over the daughters as if they didn't really matter since they were only partially human, anyway.
I've spent a lot of time thinking about the wife and those little girls and how much they all deserved way better than the people in that room.

@@MamboNombre5 I grew up in a very strict Pentecostal cult, they believed very ridiculous things, but I've never heard that. I mean, there are twins in the Bible. But I do remember our cult leader once saying that he thought twins came from more than one man having sex with a woman. He thought Cain & Abel were twins from Adam and the serpent both having sex with Eve. Adam was Abel's dad and the serpent was Cain's. I've done some research on this and apparently that was a common belief of KKK members and they say Black people and Muslims are descendants of Cain (and the serpent).

The scene where 'the lawyer guy' berates the wife for nagging and etc of her husband, rings of that super traditional christian value that places the woman in the back, silent. It's highly irritating to think that if you say to your partner "you work too much, you should relax" is worthy of some kind of punishment. I don't even recall any of the scenes shown, were of her "nagging"?
Like, love and support your partner, but part of that is going to be calling out your partner's choices that are toxic to their own well-being. Are you a 'Nag' if you tell someone they have an addiction?

As someone who was an evangelical Christian for 20+ years, this movie is pretty standard. The amount of infantilizing Christian movies/ sermons do to Christians, is intentional.
It’s not meant to be thought about or questioned.
I still consider myself to be some form of Christian. But the amount of thought stopping techniques and childish ways of thinking is very hard to tear away from. This movie provides great examples of what Christians are actually taught.
Christian movies are notoriously bad. This genre may have a lot for you to look into, that haven’t been over saturated with reviews. Some are better than others, but most of their “what world are they from ?!” doesn’t change.

  • @ElbyHere
    @ElbyHere 3 года назад +26

Totally agree with the sentiment of finding "imperfect" things, because they do have a lot of value. Some friends of mine and I have started this thing where every Friday, we watch two movies: one "main feature," which is typically something we're genuinely interested in (can range anywhere from the new King Kong vs. Godzilla movie to Shrek), picked by a variety of methods, and then the second movie is picked by a specific one of my friends who knows about some, very strange media. The "Mystery Movie," we call it. It can be anything from a terrible horror movie from the 60's to a surreal Korean animated film about fish living in a tank at a little sushi store/fish market. Some of them are things you'd never see in mainstream media, but still manage to be some of the most memorable and unironically good movies I've ever seen (Padak [the fish movie I described] and Wild Zero [an off-the-wall movie about a Japanese rock band], to name a few).
Even the movies that are bad do create some very unique, memorable moments (and are often times just amusing to make fun of), much moreso than a lot of just, "good" movies of mainstream media that manage to be vaguely entertaining but will have completely left my mind within the week. The fact it's such a social thing also definitely helps, but I think it's a worthwhile exercise regardless.

For bad movies - you can try The Yellow Wallpaper movie made in 2010.
I watched it when I was in middle school when I read the original prose, and looking back I understood absolutely nothing about either.
But I remember the movie being very bad, completely different from the prose version, and for some reason had a goofy farmer uncle and also zombies? Idk might be worth checking out.

There is a movie I just remembered from my childhood called “The Magic Gourd”. It was dubbed in English and had this orange CGI magical gourd that helped a little boy by granting his wishes? The boy was also on a swim team or did competitions. I can’t remember much else but I remember watching it every once in a while as a kid and one day just realizing that I didn’t like it any more because of the message?
And I was the kind of kid who just liked everything for the most part (unless I’m was too scary or violent, etc.) and just kind of accepted things. So if I suddenly thought it had a bad message as a child it must have been wild. I’d love to see someone talk about it. So I offer it up, if this comment ever gets seen.
    EDIT: spelling

But I'm still (shamefully) traumatized from my own emotionally/psychologically/other abusive marriage.
    Luckily we had no children.
He was a very cunning, manipulative, gaslighting man child.
When I offered up marriage counseling, he **legitimately** used the following as an argument:
"Jenn, you know if we go see a therapist I'm smart enough to make them think whatever I want and make you look crazy"
    🤣
But maybe it won't be so bad. I love your other videos!!
I was raised in a very, very low key Protestant (?) Congregational church.
It was super chill. It was like "hey! Come on in! We're just gonna sit and talk about Jesus, being better people and sing a few hymns. After we'll catch up with coffee!"
I went to Catholic high school. And. Like. Damn. 🤦‍♀️

If I can make a suggestion that might not get read on a several-month-old video: my favorite method for finding terrible old movies is thrift stores. You don't have to, like, buy the movie or anything (if it's a VHS you might not have a player, if it's a DVD it'll probably be scratched), but the covers are usually indicative of the quality of the movie and at the very least you can grab a few titles. I found one of my favorite bad cartoons that way lol

Thankyou so much for this video. I needed this. You were intentionally and unintentionally hilarious. For eg...I listened to this like a podcast while I was cleaning with my mum and dad so mum interuppted me to ask me something so I took my earphone out and listened to her...and I came back to hear 'so here we are watching unsupervised pre-teens talk to strangers on the internet.' And I'm like...'ok...uuummm...I appear to have missed a vital part of this video. Go back.' But once I got the context it was also great but I'm so happy that I got to hear that line out of context. Also I got the best burns from mum and snd dad they are so bitter and icdont want to laugh at people's pain but also...perfect 🔥 . 'I remember when your dad used to remember little things' or 'what's that? Pouring your heart out? Oh sorry Hun...Susan the secretary just called and I don't have a moment to spare and also f u.' Or the grilling the poor mum got...I didn't know it was possible to laugh and also feel empathy for someone very different for me and Willie you make me feel strange and mixed emotions and I'm here for it.'

Swanson was one of my celebrity crushes when I was a young man. (So was Stacey Dash. Boy, do I know how to pick 'em.) Now my parents are the ones who are big fans of hers, considering her "one of the good ones" because she appears on Fox News from time to time. I still like her, but I wish she'd shut up about anything that isn't related to entertainment - especially Christianity. She hasn't lived a Christian lifestyle, so she has no standing to implicitly judge the rest of us.
