the ice cream man, as a self-employed worker, clearly represents the petty bourgeoisie, who while they do not personally wield power can nonetheless not be relied on as supporters of the proletariat
I thought it represented those who would peddle opiates to the masses. Ice cream people could be the “one good adult” and the fact that adults treat you to ice cream might make all the struggles of childhood “worth it” or bearable. In a different movie Max and his friends might go to the soda-shop or a dinner and commiserate over milkshakes about the bullies and the adults and maybe there is a kind old soda jerk or shop owner who looks after them and gives them sage advice. In fact it’s at a pizza parlor styled like one of those dinners that we see the moment of confrontation before the climax where Max is accused of being a sell out and abandoning his friends and his commitments. Here and ice cream vendors are shown to be evil, they really hate and despise their “customers” and pizza parlors are plays as if they were nightclubs or bars. Additional pieces of interest are one of the people who fills this role of adult who gives sage advice is the janitor who says something along the lines of “any one can make a mess but it takes a man to clean up a mess.” A think he’s wearing a jumpsuit that might be grey iirc but it could be blue making him a literal blue-collar working man aka the proletariat. Besides the fact that *I* , a tiny girl, was bullied and literally no one ever did anything about it (in fact, my bus driver let me be beaten up on multiple occasions by much older, bigger boys and told me to stop whining, which led me to believe that it was basically prison), but I literally saw a kid get put into a garbage can and rolled down the hallway and then the teacher who saw the event yelled at *him* for it. We literally were the generation of victim-blaming, there's a reason why things are so different now and why bullying is taken so seriously, because enough child/teen suicides and school shootings made teachers think, "Oh, maybe we *should* do something about this."

I can definitely attest to this. I was bullied, harshly in the fifth grade, and again in the seventh grade after I came back from a stint at the mental hospital. I was also bullied on the bus when I was in I think first grade but that was in the mid 90s, these two boys told me that they were going to come into my room and Kill me in my bed. I don’t think anything happened to them because they continued to threaten me, but unsurprisingly schools are still not doing much about bullies.
Bully victim here too. I was small and advanced for my age, which made me a target. I was bullied by kids and by our abusive principal. She at one point ran across the parking lot and picked up my necklace and hung me by it while she screamed in my face, then dragged me over to a teacher and 'handed' the necklace over to her, while I was standing on my tiptoes in a lot of pain. This same principal also almost pushed a kid down the stairs, but I startled her and the kid got away. I can't watch movies like this because of that, but listening to Willie cover it was sort of like a gentler way of seeing it, and I appreciate that.

As someone leaving Los Angeles at 2PM tomorrow to go back to Michigan, I really needed to hear this. I felt like I fucked up and I failed myself by not being able to make it out here. Hearing that someone else feels the same really helps me feel better. I thought I belonged here too, but now I don't know where I belong. And I think that's okay, how you put it. A man once said, "The only place home exists, is in your mind."
16:43 when 13 reasons why came out i was relentlessly compared to katherine langford. a couple people actually compared me to hannah baker herself. which i took as a deep hit to my personal character. needless to say, i completely agree. also maybe don't compare people to characters only known for being suicidal when you aren't 100% positive on their mental state to begin with.
This is probably one of my favorite early 2000s movies, me and my brothers watched it maybe once a week for way too long. Excited to see what you thought about it. Also PS. your channel is kinda my cozy corner of the internet. I feel comfortable here and you can keep my interest because your takes are so unique and your delivery is perfect deadpan dry humor. You're doing great Willie :) Hope your move went well and you're settling into your new home
I feel like, going with the socialist allegory, the ice cream man may just be the common worker who has grown accustomed to the capitalist system and is just trying to make the best of his life in a fucked up world while tearing his fellow workers, like Max Keeble, down in hopes of rising to a higher standing. Specifically seeing that it seems the way ice cream man was "defeated" was by sewing strife between him and he stocksbroker, which may lead him to realize the ways in which the system cannot be beat and that rising to the top is not a solution for his plights. Would make even more sense if he ended up teaming up with Max by the end but this is the best I could get without having actually watched the film (yet anyways).
I didn’t know I had an aesthetic, but shit, I guess this is it, people feel so uneasy when I stare past them and knit into the abyss during a conversation, I get it now, solidarity brother ✊

I had recently moved and have been Going The Fuck Through It and thinking about my future beyond it, so uh. Your part at the end definitely hit a little too hard, in a good way. Thank you Willie.
This movie came out when I was 8. I've always had the impression that if I ever went back and re-watched it, it would be way worse than I remember ... not unlike the entirety of my childhood - I wasn't put-off by this video's initial implication that the movie was bad. I was expecting it to be bad. I was expecting to laugh at myself for liking such an awful movie. What I didn't expect was your anecdote at the end about moving, and plans, and disappointment. It resonated with me in a way that I never could've predicted... I guess what I'm trying to say is, thank you.
The scenes with the girl Max has a crush on and the teacher made me uncomfortable even as a kid. I believe there's a scene of the girl in slow motion to Baby One More Time. I just moved back to my parents' unfortunately, from Southern California to Northern. It was a nightmare because of my grandma who was helping me. It's a very long story, but basically our relationship and her relationship with my parents was nearly cut because of how she was behaving. I ended up having to get rid of 99% of my stuff, and she threw away stuff behind my back that I can't replace. My dog had to be in his crate in the back of her truck in the 100 degree heat for the 8-hour trip while her tiny chihuahua was in the air conditioned vehicle. My shrimp colony didn't survive the move and I lost some fish, too. I'm also unemployed, have less than no money, my dog apparently has liver problems (ultrasound tomorrow hopefully will provide answers, but his bloodwork came back with multiple liver enzymes twice as high as they should be), and my chronic illnesses have progressed to the point of being disabling and I don't know how I'm going to hold a job. And on top of that, I'm trying to retain what's left of my sanity living with my family again and trying not to have PTSD episodes from growing up in this toxic environment.
This movie ruined Halloween one year. My mom had free tickets that expired on Halloween so we only got to trick or treat at a couple houses before the movie started
I just had a big move of my own and have been experiencing some really intense post move anxiety depression and anxiety and i am not kidding when i say this video made me cry. This was a good and important move for me but it didn’t make the move any easier and hearing willie say to do the daunting thing if you think it will make life a little better was exactly what i needed.
Since ive subbed to this channel i have genuinely enjoyed every one of Willie's videos. Absolutely amazing commentary on all the things no one in my real life wants to talk to me about. 🤣 Thank you Willie for always providing a fun escape from my boring office job. Sending love and support!! I hope your move went well!
I'm so glad every time I see you posted a new video. They're always so fun and a great thing to put in the background when I'm stuck doing things I've been avoiding. The vibe is very much "your friend is just talking about their latest thing" and it's very calming.
That mason jar talk was important to me as someone who is still getting over the fact that I had to move 5 times in the past 2 years. I *think* I miss all the things from all those places, but really its about grieving the person I "failed" to become according to my own little goals. The perspective these videos always have me put on my own life when I'm not expecting it is one reason I love this channel
That's a really tough thing to go through and I hope that you're doing okay. Personally, I've been in the same place for 4 years now and that's after spending the first 5 years of my adult life moving once or twice a year. It was so exhausting and I think it really impacted a lot of other shit in my life. Honestly, I'm still finding boxes of stuff in this house that I never unpacked because I've been so used to not staying somewhere long enough to justify that. Anyway Willie's mason jars really hit a lot of us in a deep way I guess lol

Midway through the video, I forgot that the metric for choosing this film was that Willie was moving, so when we circled back at the end and they started talking about about their move, I thought for a second "oh what a fun coincidence that they moved right around the time they watched that movie", then I remembered the premise of the video and realized I was a dumbass.

I am in the process of changing jobs from a mentally unhealthy call center job that I've had for the past 5 years and have been terrified of if this new job will work out or if I will like it. I keep thinking of ways to come back to by unhealthy job and your story about moving and your Mason jars has been unbelievably helpful and totally encompasses everything I've been feeling recently.... so thanks
I listen to this while playing solitaire, and whenever there's a pause I switch back and rewind to make sure I didn't miss any of Knitcholas's comments.
Hi Willie. Doubt you’ll see this, but a pretty ace unknown is Suing the Devil. It’s a truly surreal no-budget Australian Christian movie played straight by everyone with the twist being they somehow got Malcom McDowell (Clockwork Orange) to play the devil, so it sits well within that golden zone of enjoyably horrible. Stumbled upon it at a Goodwill, I can find next to nothing online about how this enigma came to exist and I’ve yet to see a single breakdown/analysis done for it- which it desperately needs and deserves.
willie, you talking about the stress and pain of moving and change in general was so, so relatable and cathartic to me. i move every 2 years and it generally takes me at least a year to make any friends or get into the groove of things. meaning less than half of my life ever feels fulfilling or worthwhile or just, not lonely. the way you talk about change and your own moving experience has brought me some peace :,) good video as always, i watched it while played tetris on a gameboy advance
This kinda gives me a how to with John wilson vibe. Quality content. I love the mix of comedy, sincere reflection, and a window into the quirks of someones life n character. Also there were just some great jokes in here that really cracked me up. 👏👏👏
Heads up that if you liked the Queen Latifa version of "Last Holiday", you might also enjoy the older version, made by England's Ealing Studios in 1950. It stars Alec Guinness in the Latifa role. Further FYI that Ealing Studios had a reputation for small, dark, pointed comedies that feature subjects like crime ("The Lavender Hill Mob"), industrial politics ("The Man in the White Suit") and murder ("Kind Hearts and Coronets", "The Lady Killers (also remade, this one by the Coen Brothers and starring Tom Hanks)). I happen to like all of these, and highly recommend them.
I did see this movie in theaters and have largely forgotten it but holy shit watching the clips you curated just brought it allllll back. Especially them torturing Troy with the frog song
Side note - and second comment because the algorithm likes multiple comments - as I find myself sliding down into a dark mental place where I cry daily, frequently find myself dealing with intrusive thoughts and often contemplate how pointless life is, Willie's voice tone and delivery resonates with me increasingly. I feel like I get Willie, in a way I don't get most people.
I want, more than anything, to smoke a bowl with you and Knitcolas while we watch a bad movie. Or the Josie and the Pussycats movie, which is not bad, but very campy and ahead of it's time.
A really trippy movie that's sooooooo bad it's actually kinda good that I recommend is The Velocipastor. Watching it will make you feel high even if you didn't take anything to get high prior to watching it.
This is a movie I actively remember being advertised!!!!! Usually these bad movies are a little more obscure, but I’m so excited to recognize a title!!
I have no idea why I remember so much about this movie, but every time you described or showed something from the movie, it was so deeply familiar despite the fact that if you'd asked me about this movie at any point before this moment, I could have told you nothing

I find your videos really nice to watch while working on my watercolour pieces. It makes me feel as if I'm in some arts & crafts club and this dude is just rambling about a movie he watched to me while we work. Good vibes
Your Last Holiday reference made my day. Love that movie. I’ve never seen Max Keeble’s Big Move but I remember always thinking it was Keebler. Like the elves that make the cookies… - - Yeah, I know they don’t actually make the cookies. But you get me. The commercials. - - Your existential monologue on Mason Jars and a lack of TV outside and the disillusionment of life is pretty incredible.
Because I got high Because I got high Because I got hiiiiigh Bum da bum da bum bum 🎶 Great song AND a great reason to make a video, imo. It's also why I'm watching this video. Cheers!
As soon as you started playing clips I remembered this movie. But, like, not enough to actually remember it? So every clip you played was both a reminder and a complete surprise at the same time.
I never watched this movie and didn't have Disney Channel growing up, but I still vividly remember the "We're MOVING? / We're NOT MOVING?" moments from the trailer. It must have been on a VHS I watched excessively around that time because it has been living in my brain rent-free for 20 years.

I know I'm a stranger and that my opinion doesn't matter but I'm proud of you for pushing through those crappy shifts. (:
@@jgzaz thank you so much, you're really kind! I appreciate the thoughtful words
"The short answer is...is I was high." 🤣🤣🤣 I was friends with the band who is the first song on this movie. lol
Nooooo….Last Holiday ends with her meeting Emril. I’ve seen it a few times, too😁😁😁 I knew you had the most sophisticated taste!😘❤️❤️❤️❤️❤️❤️
I love that you specifically searched for movies where someone moves and found the one movie on the list where they don't move
Willie, I cannot stress enough how much I adore your videos. I am thrilled to see you back!
Sounds like lumpenproletariat-“the unthinking lower strata of society exploited by reactionary and counter-revolutionary forces”
I didn’t know I had an aesthetic, but shit, I guess this is it, people feel so uneasy when I stare past them and knit into the abyss during a conversation, I get it now, solidarity brother ✊
Fun fact: in the Percy Jackson books, the entrance to the Underworld is in LA. Maybe Willie and Rick Riordan have had similar experiences.
I'm glad you're settling in! I hope you're having a good time! It's always scary to not know what comes next, or to realize that you dream isn't actually your dream. But I'm sure you'll find what you want to do! I believe in you!!
I’ve been going thru a hard time and on top of that, lost my job 2 days ago. Not too many things make me feel somewhat at ease but your videos actually help a lot. Don’t mean to be awkward, but I mean it as a compliment
That sounds like it really sucks! I’m sorry. I’m sure things will get better for you!
commenting before even starting to say 1) I’m so happy to see another vid from you! and 2) so so happy you’re covering this movie-it was one of my faves as a kid! Thank you for adding this sunshine to my day
willie's back!! hope everything's going well!!
It’s my birthday today and all I want is Willie’s life advice and Knitcholas’ charm. Thank you for this gift.
Happy birthday!!
Er, unbirthday now, I suppose.
🎉💯👏👏👏💐🦄🍰
Your entire channel is magical and brings me much joy. 💖
how do I not remember ever watching this movie but knew ever scene you showed? This movie is a black hole in my memory
Willie, I love your vids. Never change. Your entire aesthetic and commentary style are a huge mood.
Hope we get to see more ANTM vids soon!
❤❤❤❤❤ glad you're settling in again- really loved the commentary about the world changing before our eyes...
The algorithm blessed me with this video. I feel this is the start of a great parasocial relationship where I'll be knitting, whilst watching you knit, whilst you are ripping into some movie.
a note on that thing about telling people they look like a celebrity will always be a mind game: when i was around 13/14, someone told me i look like skrillex and i still think about it almost a decade later whenever i put my glasses on. i dont have anything else to say on the topic, just needed to vent
My girlfriend has watched The Last Holiday with Queen Latifah every Christmas for the past 12 years. We've been dating for 5 years now. Guess how many times I've seen it 😅
I'm gonna guess 5 times
@@annchovie3110 Oh I might have been misleading. After watching it the 2nd time, I recommended it to my parents who I then watched it with. Thanks for guessing though 🙃
not enough
I thought I'd never heard of this movie until you said "2-way pager" and it all came flooding back. I thought I made this up.
*a kid with gorgeous hair finds out he’s moving away from his hometown*
Me: *eyes Johnny Tsunami suspiciously*
All I remember is Josh Peck in a bathrobe
Edit: Holy shit you dragged that mascot theme out from my subconscious
I was sad that this wasn’t an antm review but after watching I am no longer upset
lil romeo is only in that little cameo in the beginning to help market the song he did for the movie lol
The kill two birds with one stone joke was subtle, but I really liked it
Midway through the video, I forgot that the metric for choosing this film was that Willie was moving, so when we circled back at the end and they started talking about about their move, I thought for a second "oh what a fun coincidence that they moved right around the time they watched that movie", then I remembered the premise of the video and realized I was a dumbass.
I, too, thought Max Keeble was Lizzie McGuire's younger brother. It's that peak 2001 white boy spiked hair.
i just saw an ad on this video for a fridge that has "3 light sun cycle programing" which basically is just LED lights in your veggie drawer that change colors "simulating the sun cycle" to "keep you veggies fresher longer" and wow you can really sell rich people anything
i moved to another city more than a year ago and still getting used to my new life. still anxious, bc i left everything behind, started fresh.
thnx Willie, your words are just in time
I am in the process of changing jobs from a mentally unhealthy call center job that I've had for the past 5 years and have been terrified of if this new job will work out or if I will like it.
The sound of the knitting needles scraping against each other during the close ups of knitcholas are 🤌🏻 comedy gold
Valuable psychological deep dive. I'm here for it. Hope you're doing well.
LOVED YOUR COMMENTS AND THIS WHOLE VIDEO thank you for gently roasting my childhood fave this was such a gift 💝
willie, you talking about the stress and pain of moving and change in general was so, so relatable and cathartic to me. i move every 2 years and it generally takes me at least a year to make any friends or get into the groove of things. meaning less than half of my life ever feels fulfilling or worthwhile or just, not lonely. the way you talk about change and your own moving experience has brought me some peace :,) good video as always, i watched it while played tetris on a gameboy advance
This kinda gives me a how to with John wilson vibe. Quality content. I love the mix of comedy, sincere reflection, and a window into the quirks of someones life n character. Also there were just some great jokes in here that really cracked me up. 👏👏👏
I clicked on your videos because I crochet while I watch RUclips and it excited me that I had a yarn friend
Hey, Willie, if I had a house like that moms' I'd be in a feverish stupor for 6 years too. IT'S A whole ass HOUSE
Such an underrated movie
I was just watching your spooky videos yesterday because I missed your humor. It's my favorite kind of coincidence.
Your videos help me feel less alone in the world in an inexplicable way...
I saw Max Keeble's Big Move around the time it came out, at about 15, I sure do hope it holds up!
I made this comment before I hit play mostly just to help engagement but having finished it this was way more poignant than I was ready for.
Turned on the video to listen while shopping, finally looked at the screen "have.. have you been wearing that little hat the whole time?"
YES🥰, he has.
😆
The sound of the knitting in the background is so relaxing! I love knitting
This is a movie I actively remember being advertised!!!!! Usually these bad movies are a little more obscure, but I’m so excited to recognize a title!!
It had a big budget but it flopped
I have no idea why I remember so much about this movie, but every time you described or showed something from the movie, it was so deeply familiar despite the fact that if you'd asked me about this movie at any point before this moment, I could have told you nothing
I swear to god, when I saw Robe I knew there was a tiny little carved out space this movie made for itself in my brain.
Thank you for the video, Willie. I sincerely hope your move went well. I also hope Doodle is doing alright! Haven't seen the little guy in a while. :)
I love Last Holiday! I think about it every time I see Oprah magazine 😂 that parrot joke was great Willie
This mayor sweater is sending me. I love it.
Like the elves that make the cookies…
- -
Yeah, I know they don’t actually make the cookies. But you get me. The commercials.
- -
Your existential monologue on Mason Jars and a lack of TV outside and the disillusionment of life is pretty incredible.
Because I got high
Because I got high
Because I got hiiiiigh
Bum da bum da bum bum 🎶
Great song AND a great reason to make a video, imo. It's also why I'm watching this video.
Cheers!
You are my existential dread incarnate and I adore you. Thank you for existing.
This is my favourite Willie video, I go back to it all the time 😊
after this principal jim drake leaves and becomes the principal of the school in lemonade mouth.
