I admire the dedication of the ground crew polishing the whole aircraft by hand, very very labour intensive and muscle building. When I first joined up into the RAF we used a compound called Wadpol (wadding/Polish) a bit like Duraglit, a household polishing material in the United Kingdom, maybe in the USA also, don’t know. It made polishing aircraft a lot easier but was discontinued because it removed to much of the varnish/lacquer, so it was easier just to wash the aircraft down with water and sponges and maybe some washing compound, rinse and then dry the surface, and of course every aircraft was completely washed periodically or as needed, usually more in summer when the dead bug count was very high, especially on the wing and tail plane leading edges, oh happy days..............NOT (the washing part, not my service carrier) Thanks for sharing this interesting and informative film, a little glimpse into life looking after the aircraft known as Airforce one. 👍.
The 747B's are modified by the U.S. Air Force and Boeing Aircraft for the specific mission as Air Force One. The duty then falls to the 89th Airlift Wing at Andrews Air Force Base. Colonel Tillman and his crew deserve to be commended for their dedication to duty. The Maintenance crew keep this and it's twin 747 in pristine condition regardless of the flights they make.
That is the first time I have seen the inside of Air Force One and I saw it from the outside when President Carter was in office and he came to McChord AFB on a trip to Seattle for a speech. I was at the terminal when I took the photos outside the airplane, and there when he returned to leave.

The tail number is the only difference. For the newer 747 jets, the numbers are SAM 28000 and 29000. For the older 707 jets the tail numbers were SAM 26000 and 27000. The cabin layout of one of the 707 version was updated at some point.
Two identical 747s serving as the primary Air Force One, 4 757s for backup AF1/primary AF2/VIP & Cabinet Transport for the SecState and SecDef. And 17 737/Boeing Business Jets (though only three are assigned to Andrews...the rest are for the 4-Star Combatant Commanders of the 10 Unified Commands). Not to mention G5s and G550s, all painted in pretty much the similar paint scheme.
Is it also correct that the helicopters become Marine 1?, and as an aircraft engineer I would love to have got my hands on Airforce 1, or at least the aircraft that becomes Airforce 1.
If the aircraft the sitting US President is flying on is an USAF aircraft (rotary or fixed wing), the call-sign used by that aircraft would be "Air Force One" regardless if it is a VC-25, C-32, C-40, or even a B-52 or a C-17. If the aircraft is a USMC aircraft it will be referred to as "Marine One." USN, "Navy One,” USA, "Army One,” I’m assuming it would be the same for the USCG as “Coast Guard One,” but that is a guess. I don't know what call-sign the aircraft would be using if it were with the United States Public Health Service Commissioned Corps or the NOAA Commissioned Officer Corps (see www.usphs.gov/questionsanswers/overview.aspx and www.omao.noaa.gov/learn/noaa-commissioned-officer-corps). If a sitting US President flies on a non-military, US registered aircraft, fixed wing or rotary, the call-sign it would be using would be "Executive One." When President George H.W. Bush passed away in late 2018, the USAF mission of carrying the remains of the former president used a special call sign, “Special Air Mission 41” in reference to him being the 41st President of the United States. Side note, the locomotive that pulled the rail-car carrying the casket from Houston’s Union Pacific Railroad’s Facility up to College Station, Texas was given the number 4141, an EMD SD70Ace locomotive.
One of the executive fleet's 757s that typically carry the Vice President and Secretary of State. In a pinch, they can be pressed into service for use by the President.
True, but we all know is AF1,that s how it s known in the fleet,I imagine that the maintenance crew refer to it as AF1. Even the reporter says let s tour AF1. You have to essentially be able to run the country from inside the plane, such as in case of emergency while the president is in the air. Also, the president rarely travels alone, there are quite a few more people on the plane.
It's really quite amazing to see so many ignorant comments. For example, "a waste of money!!" Do you expect the President of the largest nation in the free world to visit other countries by taxi? On the other hand, "nom som" expected more luxury... Just goes to prove that you can't please all of the people any of the time.
The plane has been set up like that since delivered in 1990. So...it appears that a Bush insult falls upon deaf ears. The thing is set up normally with one bed as a couch, one as a bed, or both as couches depending on the type of trip.
Nothing more strenuous than a Top Secret Clearance. They do a thorough background check, they check your work record, your scores on training, if you're current and such. Hey, it's a job. You're good at your job, you get priority. Hey, I had clearance.
I will add one thing, if anything happens to that plane, the Crew Chief is automatically read his rights, and I am NOT kidding you. And you get called onto the carpet. I'm not kidding you there either.
This video is pretty cool. I have always wanted to see what it is like inside. I always thought it was forbidden for anyone to take pictures, or shoot video inside due to security reasons.
@sanelo1 The president would probably go in air force one or head off to some secret location where we could still have charge of the country. Even when the world trade center was hit air force one was ordered to stay up in the air until it was safe for the president to come back down. Air force one is a very safe place for the president and in most causes could act as a safe haven for him.
Gotta love recommendations 11yrs later😂😂😂

Dear John Smith, its due to the skill of these marvellous pilots that you get where you need to go and back again all in one piece

You do understand that this is a far superior aircraft when compared to the one that Carter flew in, don't you?
Bush Sr. landed at McChord AFB as will. For what? I don’t know? My old man met one of his Secret Service Agents though.
