- This video shows how to do image transferring onto clay using lithography and pronto plates. If you have any questions please don't hesitate to contact me, I wish there was someone to answer questions for me...but there wasn't and I had to learn the hard way. So, I hope you find theses tips useful!
You can find the pronto plates at www.dickblick.com/products/pronto-plate-5000/
Thanks for posting this! Very useful. I've had success with straight laser prints up to Cone 10 and now will try Pronto Plates thanks to you. I probably owe you at least a dollar.
Thank you for a demo. I am new to ceramics and wanted to learn how printmaking processes could be used. As a printmaker, I would like to give you one little tip, if I may. I noticed that you dried the plate on the first inking up. Lithography works by water repelling the ink so that it only adheres to the toner, so instead of drying the plate and then sponging off the excess ink, leave the plate wet when you are inking up and there should not be much residue left to clean up, as evident when you are inking up the second time. Also, for lithography, a very stiff ink is usually used and rolled up thinly until you hear "a hiss but not a slurp". Perhaps, this may make your process even simpler?
Anastassia Manzon welcome to ceramics! Thanks for your comment, I usually don't dry the plate, I use a damp sponge to wipe it first so that the ink is repelled by the water. I'll have to quell with the ink more next time I do this process. Thanks again!
Waiting for Pronto plates and linseed oil to arrive from the States -any week now.🤣 Meanwhile, I'm preparing lamp bases, bagging them so they don't dry up. Soon I'll underglaze them soon in anticipation of the 'big transfer'. Thanks for your help. 😊
Sure this video is pretty old but you’re a goddess for letting us know about the ink! I was mad that I waited overnight and it was not the right consistency lol thank you!!!
Danielle, I'll glad this helped!
Hello, what a nice instructual video.
I however still have two questions concerning this technique:
1) When I tried this myself I found out my clay was to wet and kept sticking onto the pronto plates. Which type of clay could I use best.
2) And how does the oily ink respond to high temperatures while baking in the oven?
Thanks again for your nice video.
Thanks! Glad you enjoyed the video. You can use any type of clay, it works fine with cone 6...everything but the mason stain burns off. After it's fired, the mason stain is not totally adhered to the piece, once it's glazed, it is. Your clay doesn't need to be real wet...actually you want it to be a little drier. Good luck, let me know if you need more help.
Great video, and thank you for all the suggestions. I had a quick question regarding inking the image. I can't seem to get the ink to adhere to the image. The oil/ink just seems to slide around the pronto plate. When I use a sponge to pick up the excess, all the oil/ ink comes with it. Should I heat the image slightly? Any suggestions would be greatly appreciated. I'm determined 😊. HUGE thank you. process.
Thank you so much for your video...I must say it is the most informative video/information that I have ever found. Love the Pronto Plate...I just ordered it from BLICK, not sold in Canada...boo hoo! The filming of your video is also well done. You show what you are doing so we can actually see the consistency of your ink and the image you are printing. By the way, love your personality, smart, funny and to the point. Thank you so very much.
Oh I'm so glad you found what you were looking for! Pronto plates are great...I found them at Blick..not in my town either. Good luck! Would love to see what you make.
You are so kind! I didn't see the last part of your comment...thank you very much! I love what I get to do! If you're ever down south, stop by.
Argh. Been struggling using paper! Ordered some black and brown mason stains and will start again using the plates! Blick takes AGES to deliver! But the cost is reasonable. Thanks so much for this video!
HIYA, have you had success with brown mason stains? I can only get onyx black to work effectively.
Great video thank you. Can I ask what kind of linseed oil you used? It seems as though there are several types raw, refined, burnt. Any suggestions? Thank you!
Thank you!! I'm pretty sure I just used regular linseed oil. Maybe refined. I don't remember getting anything fancy! Thanks for watching and good luck!!
Great demo. Im wondering if the plates can be pre inked up and left to dry completely for use at a later date? If smudge free storage can be achieved that is. I have limited space and it would be good to clear away the inking gear entirely to free the space for days of rolling clay. Im also wondering if hairspray or fixative would be useful either on the plates before use or in preserving the image on clay through until firing. Esp as i must bicycle my pieces to a public kiln service and smudging and breakage are inevitable. Thanks.
Great tips. Another tip, rolling out ink thinly will avoid the excess ink while rolling on the pronto plate
Allison. Perhaps adding Gerstley Borate to the Mason stain cocktail would help fix the color to the pot better, as GB is a flux and the stain may need some help with this, {Perhaps using the same amt of GB as stain)
You are an engaging, well-organized, and enthusiastic teacher - BRAVA for you AND for this super video! Where do I send my dollar?
Oh thank you very, very much!! We are so glad you enjoyed the video! =) You've made our day!
If you're ever in southwest Louisiana, look us up!
If you dont have maison stain ?its posible to use oxida or other ceramic paint?
Tried paper, baking sheets, and now pronto plates. they are the bomb. One question- I was trying to print photos - black and white, and kept getting a speckled effect where it should be solid black. Had great success with pronto plate and line drawings. Is it normal to get the speckled effect when there is a solid area?
Yes, because of the paper surface... if you look very but very close to the paper you will notice little dots... but if the black area is quite big you can brush with the ink.
Linseed oil, Raw or Boiled
Wow! That was a great video! Thanks!
I have a question about the ratios linseed oil to ink. I've noticed that the ratios vary. Kristina Bogdanov uses a three part oil to 2 part stain ratio, but you say that you use the reverse 2 parts oil to 3 parts stain. Did I understand you correctly. Another person uses 1:2 ratio.I am thinking that stiffness and saturation might make a difference. Have you experimented with this ratio or with adding flux? Thanks
Hi ! Thank you for this video. I have difficulties to understand spoken english (I'm French) and I have a few questions if you have the kindness to answer me. 1) I repeat video again and again but...I don't understand what is the special lithographic paper you use. Can you write its name ? 2) I understand you prepare the "ink" 4 days before you use it, but how long can we keep it and re-use it?
Thank you ;)
Hi there, I'm sorry it's taken years to get back with you, I'm sure you've gotten answers but I will say that I used Pronto plates and the ink stays for a couple of week.
Hi, I am new to the pronto plate process. When you said, "toner" and "use a laser printer" is for laster printers"
I always thought that toner is with ink jet printers. So I am a little confused. Please let me know what you mean and thank you in advance. Any help to avoid heartache is much appreciated :)
Elisa, I'm sorry I'm just seeing this now! The toner is from a laser printer. I went to a printing place to have them printed, like office depot type place
Love it! Can you reuse the pronto plates?
Thank you for the info!
It can be reused with the image, as far as putting a new design, I don't know, hadn't tried it.
Thanks!
You can turn them over and use the other side!
how do you do the 3 parts to 2 parts? Do you weigh it or is it just tea spoons? (3 rounded tea spoons of mason stain to 2 tea spoons of oil?
lmoneal7 I just use a teaspoon to measure.
The Art Factory thanks! Im gonna try this weekend.
How well does this work on a curved pot...or does it only work on flay clay? TIA
I don't know how it would work, paper would be better, the pronto plate doesn't curve well, it's like a plastic sheet.
I've tried using the gum and FAILED. I was pretty upset after getting all the supplies and taking the time... but I am going to order so pronto plate and give this a try! Thanks!
Good luck! We tried and failed many times with the paper and found that mostly it was the ink had not cured long enough...that made the biggest difference. The pronto plate also was amazing! Let us know how it worked for you!
Once youve put the design on the clay though can you fire and glaze the clay?
So where do I send that dollar?
Haha!! Hope you have lots of success!
Would this work on Sculpey?
I don't think so, mostly because the Masson stain needs to be fired with a glaze on top to be permanent.
Awesome video! You should make more :)
Thanks so much!! I'm hoping to soon. Is there something about ceramics you'd like to see?
Currently really into transferring images onto clay, which is why I happened upon this. But I guess I'd say anything you love to do yourself.
where can i buy the Mason's stain?
A ceramics store should have it.
I don’t know yet as I haven’t used her method but the other ways have worked for me and were quick and did fine. I’m not sure what’s she is talking about them lying etc.
So this is the third time I've watched this. I think I now owe you $3. Got an email addressP PayPal will make the transfer.
No matter how many times I try it doesn't work. The "ink" does not react differently to the print than the background. What am I doing wrong? I've watched the video numerous times and still no luck!
Hi again! Right. So I've fired some test tiles, but the images are smudgy. Too much oil? Not sure how to sort this. How could there still be oil after a low fire? :( PS. I didn't fire them myself.
Allison Roohi hi Allison, I find that this process is not going to give you super clean edges. A couple of things to consider is masking sure there is not too much water when applying the image and then after they are fired don't touch the image. Unlike underglaze, the ink basically floats on the surface, so when applying glaze, take care not to smudge the ink. I always use a heavier first coat when covering the ink after bisque. Good luck, please feel free to contact me. You can reach me directly at Tracy@theartfactoryswla.com
The Art Factory thanks very much! The kiln didn't burn the oil out of the ink. It smudged because I touched it! Crazy. I scrubbed the tiles with dish liquid and a faded image remained. I just don't get how the ink could still be wet after a low fire. As a printmaker, I think I'm not getting the ink mix exactly right, you know? Like, I know what I need for intaglio plates, but not this. Also, our studio is in a garage in New Orleans without air conditioning. It's got to affect the ink. Argh. Will try again!
The Art Factory oh, I also found that the image 'stuck' to the tile which was printed on a fresh underglaze as opposed to the actual clay. Not a bad thing, but made me think my clay was too dry.
Allison Roohi I visit New Orleans quite a bit, I'm in the other side of the state, Lake Charles. Where in N.O. are you? Maybe I could cone by next time I'm there.
The Art Factory I'm in Mid City! It's a shame really, because I'm getting such beautifully detailed prints. I tested applying a few clear glazes over top. Disaster! My friend has suggested spraying the glaze, but I haven't tried it yet. Thanks so very much for the input! Would love to meet you! I work for my friend in his studio and make time for my own work, as well. 😃
where can I buy Pronto plates? can't seem to find it online.
I'm sorry I'm just seeing this now, I ordered it from Dick Blick.
such a nice video - thank you! : )
Thank you!
Excellent thank you
Thank you! Good luck!
That was great! I'm so ready to send you the buck! Paypal? Snail mail? Whereto?
sizzlenotsteak thank you so much...so glad you enjoyed it! Would love to see what you do!
Great thanks, but so frustrating when teachers don't show the finished product!
Thanks! I will post a video work finished products very soon!
I just posted a video of the final product. just wanted to let you know. have a great day!
The Art Factory where is the video? Couldn't find it, thanks!
venmo>? hor how can I pay you.
Haha...I'm just seeing this...glad it was helpful!!
$1
Thanks! Glad you found it helpful!!
They are not even your competitors and yet, in the beginning, you accuse them of lying. SO unnecessary. Your process can speak for itself I'm seeing this in 2020 - lying is just not okay. Turned me off immediately!
Jennifer, you are completely correct and I regretted saying it however I didn't mean it like they are liars, I should have said something different and have thought many times about adding a disclaimer about it. I will try to do that now. I'm sorry you were offended, and thanks for bringing it to my attention.
@@theartfactory449 Fantastic of you to point that out. Thanks - I do appreciate it. These are sensitive times when it comes to truth 8^) I appreciated your technique.
Thanks Jennifer, unfortunately I have not been able to figure out how to change or add to the description.
