I’ve done that with same coloured slip (porcelain) as the bowl, then glazed with celadon. Works a treat! I use my own stencils cut on a silhouette cutter in thin plastic that moulds to the bowl shape. Am going to try this too!

Yes, you could do that, but I have found that the slip doesn't transfer as evenly and neatly if you try to apply the slip through the stencil directly onto the clay. Also, it is harder to build the slip up thickly when you transfer directly through the stencil onto the clay form.
