Simple compiler is just about parsing text, building tree, traversing tree and writing it all into different format. The hard part is optimisations. Writing compiler is good hobby project when you don't identify yourself as noobie in programming.

Nobody develops OS kernels because you have Linux. Nobody writes operating systems because you have Linux distributions/FreeBSD/Windows. He spent a *lot* of time on this. We're talking over a decade. It's not unfathomable that somebody with a CS degree, working on it full time on disability benefits, could write a compiler and OS. People with that degree of skill don't bother. They apply their skills to things that matter, like improving open source projects or getting paid to work on proprietary projects. Don't get me wrong. I think this project is fantastic for people that want to learn more about how compilers work, and how operating systems work. But he was never the world's best programmer or close to it. He's definitely above average. And in view of the fact he managed to do it all notwithstanding his schizophrenia is extremely impressive. It's a pity his schizophrenia wasn't better controlled, and that he couldn't work. TempleOS with the god stuff removed would have been a great hobby project. Who knows. Plenty of extremely intelligent people throughout history believed in God or a god. It's possible that without religion he wouldn't have felt inspired to create such a brilliant representation of his genius, and we'd all be worse off for it
