42 games and the Fever were still making the same defensive mistakes. 42 games and the Fever were still without commitment to an offensive philosophy. 42 games and the Fever still hadn't settled into a cohesive starting 5. For an entire season, the Fever was in chaos. Player development was MIA.

From watching the games... Give credit to the Suns defense. They ran faster and were phisical enough to stop the pace.

She was targeted from day one. No one has ever been purposefully fouled to the level of Clark. If she was treated as an average player with a normal schedule she would have beaten Wilson for scoring in my opinion. You need to discuss the level of uncalled fouling that has occurred to shut down the Fever. If you were CC and Mitchell and you know the other team is allowed to aggressively foul you, there is no way you are going to score to your full potential or have consistant scoring. I will warn the W, I think people will allow the league until next year to fix the ref problem. If they are still calling like the final fever game this year, the W is doomed and Clark should move on. Clarks defense is Ok to below average, its not horrible. If you correct the Ref problem, the Fever can be mediocre at defense and still be a championship team. People want to see high scoring games with great passes and deep threes, what they dont want to see is angry women fouling each other- yuk. Thomas is the opposite of what people want to see. There are plenty of other sports better than the W like the UFC if we want to watch combat.

Note that there are other stats that indicate that the system does in fact know how many 2s and 3s on assists are made, but they aren't surfaced in the WNBA website.

"Points generated" in basketball is a metric used to estimate a player's total contribution to their team's offense, both by scoring and assisting others to score. While there isn't one universal formula, a common way to calculate it involves two main components: points scored and points created through assists.
Here's a basic formula to calculate points generated:
Points Generated = Points Scored + (Assists × Average Points Per Assist)

They’ll only lose one player to the expansion team and they can protect 6 players so it won’t be a big loss. If Mitchell wants to leave we can core her and not let her go or core and then trade her, filling out that loss.
Players will have an offseason to work on their game, tailor fit to the new system. Either a new coaching staff or even the same one with knowledge of how this year went will make things different.
We have a few bench players with non guaranteed contracts so either the draft or random pickups we should see some new pieces that fit the style we want to play.
As for the physicality, we’ll see. Clark will have an offseason to work on her strength and overall game.
There’s an outside chance that some progress will be made on the “let’s not recklessly damage the golden goose” front.
Between all of that I do expect things to be better for the Fever and CC next year.

Pushing the tempo every night is easier said then done. It is physically exhausting. Getting beat up and hacked adds to that wear and tear. The fever get beat and bullied every night. On defense the fever play hard and over pursue. Anybody who has played any contact sport know how hard it is to play with your engine at max every game. Then being sore and beat up on top of that is even harder. They lose when they slow down. The team doesn't have the depth to play thecway the want to right now. The came in to the season built for a slower half court game built around Boston and cuts from Wheeler and Mitchel. Iso ball from the wings and post play from Boston with the occasional kick out to a back door cut. You don't need a lot of depth for that. However, with Clark coming in with immediate success they had to change their entire identity while using pieces that are just not built to play in the CC system. It is fair to say that they arrived well ahead of schedule. Right now the moment the handful of players capable of succeeding in this system stop for a breather the other teams build up point differentials that lead to close games and losses. With a better stretch 4 that can run the floor Smith is allowed to come off the bench for quality minutes. Samuelson is still physically getting into playing shape while dealing with newborn anxiety. Next year she will be better as we saw her getting better toward the end of the fever run. She may not be athletic enough for what they need but she is a quality bench player. In reality they need to rework contracts for the players at max that will be coming off the bench. However, the current max should be the median for a solid bench player and the max should be 350k plus incentive packages like the Aces are using. That should be the standard until the W can earn more for itself outside of CC.

You must be gaslighting me Mick! I was told by more than one very knowledgeable WNBA and college coach gurus that Caitlin was getting a reality check. That there is no way she can compete against these grown ass women. But in all seriousness all I am seeing is grown ass women that rely on their muscles and bullying to dominate. It is a shame that skill is not the far most characteristic in the "dub". To be honest I am ready to figure out how to watch the Euro League and hope that CC will find her way there.

Mick, Is it possible that if CC had been treated better thru the season - no on court/off court attacks which include verbal attacks, that when the Fever were eliminated the viewership would not have fallen off so much? In short, was CC's treatment lead to the fan viewership fall off?

This is why I laughed at the folks who gave A’ja the MVP trophy before game 1 of this season. Yes, she is good. Yes, she greatest a high PPG. But total points generated by or because of Caitlin absolutely eclipses her numbers. Caitlin came in and made the worst team in the league scary good. Enough to where it had to be the referees who ended their season. She makes EVERYONE around her just…better. She outRookied everyone who has had a rookie year. She IS why I watch.

Expansion, OH OH that will not be a smart move when this free agency trading starts swirling I see the sunny Riviera on days off for a select few women and I support them going IF they chose sport over politics when it comes to your job.

We can say CC is great but they got outplayed in the playoffs…they didn’t “slow” down because of Sides. CC got poked in the eye she was shooting 1-12 or something at the half. Same with Nash and the Suns, defensively sound teams can and will slow down fast pace teams. Even the championship Golden state years they were average defensively, not bottom of the barrel…so many games this season Fever would come back and tie or get close only to lose.
CC is a rookie so she’ll figure it out, but they were clearly outplayed and they need better defense.
