I think Hegerty keeps an eye on Patrick out of guilt. He knows Errol is innocent and that putting him behind bars left Patrick without a father figure growing up. So, he is in some ways trying to make up for what he did by looking out for Patrick.

BUT I don’t know why he would go over the “story” of Adelaide’s death with Patrick again. What was the need to reiterate everything that happened?
It reminds me of when people rehearse a lie to make sure they both tell it the same way when they’re questioned.

What I love about this series so far is this chess match aspect, more than the various mysteries. Hegarty has pulled some very cagey moves in making June the face of the gang shooting investigation, just to cover targeting her, so he could then plausibly clip her for her own safety. And now we see he's way bent, beyond just being someone who railroaded suspects.

I think Hagerty made a deal with Errol to keep an eye on Patrick in exchange for his confession. I agree with your theory about his gambling debt, he’s reporting to someone powerful or the caller(Carla?) wouldn’t be so scared. They made a point of letting us know that the murderer belongs to an alt-right group…too many racial comments between Hagerty and his two men. There may be a connection

Why doesn’t June just track down Adelaide Burrows’ ex-boyfriend(s) to find the potential true murderer (or to rule it out)?

So far we have Turkish -Muslim, Sikh characters being included and Errols mother operating out of a church with a bright red Cross.
I noticed on his little weird coded note, there were numbers next to icons of religions. A cross, a star, a ying yang. Might just be doodles
Might be nothing but it also says Is the one who will, which is part of the biblical verse "the soul who sins is the one who will die" Ezekial 12:18

Very nice! We'll see if it ends up meaning anything in the end!
