Richard Clapton....the other Clapton, a world class musician that never got the international attention he deserved. So great to see his work on youtube! This Yank'll never forget the show I saw him perform at the Palm Beach Surf Club in the Aussie Summer of '88, MAGIC!
I have been mates with Harvey for over 30 years we were both Dandenong boys, but that's another story. .I have known him through bands such as Clyde House, Mississippi, Sailor, Ariel, Sherbet, Richard Clapton, Swannie, Party boys, Played with Glyn Mason, After that he played on the sly with me and John Lee Because he was a rep for Fender and wasn't allowed to play in public. He then formed a band with me and Rick Puchala and Kevin Buckingham in a band called Little Riff. While living in Sydney for 2 years in the same house as Ian Moss ,Ian frequently stole Harvey's guitar for his gigs, and I can hear the licks that he stole from Harv in his playing. Harvey James was one of the greatest guitarist that Australia has produced Rest in peace mate Your playing still makes the hairs on my neck stand up........
What fucking utter horse shit. Ian's style and innovation is obvious and to claim he stole it from Harvey is just ludicrous. Harvey was a great player but he wasn't a patch on Mossy.
I was a HUGE Sherbert fan I still am Havery was a fantastic Guitarist and he always dressed so Beautifully gone too soon Mr James's so happy they all got to play together before Harvey and Clive passed such a big big part of my early teenage year's baci x
Yep it's Mossy on the track and Barnes singing backing vocals. The late Harvey James in the video who was a great guitar player in his own right and a lovely guy. RIP Harvey.
I love this song, I just returned from Sydney and saw this dude in Hornsby... He still looks the same and what a smile he has, was awesome meeting him... my hubby was getting jealous...lol.. thanks for sharing the clip
man i love this song...richard clapton bloody legend, with this classic song, moss's strat screaming like cat, barne'sy al mighty high mountain voice piercing through the valley of dreams... what the flyin fuk can i say? it listen to it over and over again...oz music the best
@@garnmowitdown Without checking I would have said it was Mossy on guitar, it's his phrasing and tone all over from that period. Wiki quote: "In 1982 he signed with WEA and the Mark Opitz-produced The Great Escape had contributions from members of Cold Chisel and INXS.[3][7] The album, which peaked at No. 8 in March, spawned three singles. The hard-rocking "I Am an Island", with Cold Chisel's Ian Moss on guitar and Jimmy Barnes on backing vocals, reached the top 20"
This is from Wikipedia "The 1980s saw Clapton play less of a central role in the music industry, although 1982's The Great Escape (featuring contributions from members of Cold Chisel and INXS) sold strongly and contained memorable singles in the hard-rock "I Am an Island" (which featured Cold Chisel members Ian Moss on guitar and Jimmy Barnes on backing vocals)" Harvey probably played on it also, Just that Moss & Barnes were guests!
There is NO comparison with the shit today....we have to remember what we had back then and explain to today's youth that they need to look at this magic rock magnificent is what made the world today!!
This was a killer song and one of Claptons best in my opinion. I am surprised that no one gives credit to the great drumming on this track. I am pretty sure it is Mark Meyer, who has done some great drumming with some great Aussie bands including Stylus, moving pictures, Sharon O'Neill, etc. I might mention that it was only last year that I actually understood the lyric in the chorus, "I needed you like oxygen" ;-)
@WellMeaningGentleman , the term, "you've got to have a lot of talent to be a successful solo pop/rock artist in the seventies with those looks." always springs to my mind. I'm amazed the suits didn't keep him in a back room doing the songwriting and pick some half-way good-looking bloke to at least lip-sync in the videos, at least at the beginning of his career. I grew up with his music and it's remained a part of my internal musical landscape, which is more than I can say for most artists.
Hi leonardo, and veronica, i can verify the slogan being on the wall of the subway tunnel at central station enroute to Broadway St.. I also saw what has never left my brain. Scrawled in big letters someone wrote MY MOTHER MADE ME A LESBIAN!! scrawled underneath was If I give her the wool, will she make me one too? i've never stopped laughing at that one .
This song just feels like Australia , well the old Australia, not the crap we have today with all the rules and regulations. Good just to listen and remember that we did have a country that felt real not perfect but real.
I recall that Bangalow bowling club NORDEN NSW--in late 1978---it was one of the top country gigs--Jimbo and the boys were on the night --just a little too much take on the Tubes though--ah ha--that was when the customers of that era could take their booze and gear witghout becomming complete rsoles-
Everyone is an Island, I'm NOT LISTENING TO YOU BECAUSE YOUR NOT LISTENING TO ME.......... I'm gonna go outside. So If ANNie/somebody asks, You can Just say. I'M OUTSTANDING
Who's the lead guitarist in this video, anyone know? He's really got music in his fingers … smooth, expressive style, not too much of a speed freak … Got some of Mossy's fluidity of playing without sounding anything like Mossy. Anybody?
Lots of record company politics behind this. Moss played the lead and both Clapton & Moss were very happy with his work. Compare this solo to the one in Cold Chisel's "You Got Nothing I Want" & there's a def similarity. Come record pressing time, Clapton gets TOLD that Harvey James will be credited as lead guitarist. Harvey was contracted at that time in Clapton's band. Clapton had to go back to Moss and tell him he wasn't being credited. I think all 3 musos were embarrassed by the politics.
well clearly he didn't play the solo to this song, as seen in the clip, it's the guy with the white shirt and the red strat. Who does look a bit like Ian Moss
Without any doubt
1 of the greatest Aussie tracks ever
Richard Clapton....the other Clapton, a world class musician that never got the international attention he deserved. So great to see his work on youtube! This Yank'll never forget the show I saw him perform at the Palm Beach Surf Club in the Aussie Summer of '88, MAGIC!
Probably Australia's most under rated singer/songwriter.
Kathryn McGregor No doubt about it
Throw Ed Kuepper in there as well.
My Capricorn hero!
Killer track
Yet another example of what a great talent Richard Clapton is. Thanks Richard.
I loved this video and song so much

Man he makes a Strat wail
Harvey was my inspiration to learn the guitar.
I remember the Legend! RIP Sir.
What fucking utter horse shit. Ian's style and innovation is obvious and to claim he stole it from Harvey is just ludicrous. Harvey was a great player but he wasn't a patch on Mossy.

This is awesome. thanks for posting it.
Thanks for posting, this a brilliant song, an underrated song and writer IMO.
this is Claptons best song by far
Yep it's Mossy on the track and Barnes singing backing vocals. The late Harvey James in the video who was a great guitar player in his own right and a lovely guy. RIP Harvey.

It's actually John Farris from INXS.
According to the record credits.
I won a week on HamiltonIsland for requessting this song on sea-Fm back in the day he's cool
Barnsey also did the backups for this song on one of Clapton's tours in the late '90's with Vanetta Fields.

2022 the great awakening 🇦🇺 💪
This song just feels like Australia , well the old Australia, not the crap we have today with all the rules and regulations. Good just to listen and remember that we did have a country that felt real not perfect but real.
I’ll let you in on a secret. In 1982 we had rules and regulations too.
Someone has uploaded the Countdown version on here and Harvey is rocking out on lead!
Great groove.
oh, Inever noticed it before. Having Barnesy as a back up singer is pretty cool!
why isn't mmm playing this song on the radio there supposed to be a rock channel
Glenn Phillips because MMM sucks.
Ralph you fking legend

Would like to see the version he did with barnesy on vocals about 20 years ago.
It's Mossy on guitar (the recording I mean) not Harvey James. Harvey James was an absolutely top guitarist though.
both guitarists tracked on this song
sorry but it is Harvey... I'm his sister and I know.... he left Sherbet to join Richard.
harvey james been with richard clapton since he left sherbet (the sherbs )
i believe harvey also played for john swan barns bro
correct
Who's the lead guitarist in this video, anyone know?
He's really got music in his fingers … smooth, expressive style, not too much of a speed freak … Got some of Mossy's fluidity of playing without sounding anything like Mossy.
Anybody?
harvey james
Lachlan Baird-MacKenzie James with Moss guesting some lead work.
Isn't Jon Farris Drumming in this??
Bugger wiki...I KNOW it was Harvey for a concrete fact...nuff said *wink wink*
kings cross tunnel?
that's Harvey red strat is his trademark
For all you RC fans. Take a look at the Concert i have posted in five parts, from the "Solidarity" tour.
Amazing!!
Whos playing guitar on this its awsame.
harvey james
Yeah you can really pick that high register of Jimmy Barnes on the chorus
@cemott3rd Was there as well talk about a legend!!!

Reckon you're right sounds similar to Circus Animals track 1
Wonder if Barnesy can still hit those top notes????
Correct Mossy on guitar, Barnesy on BG/VOCALS.
ibelieve mossy tends to have a bit more reverb
its harvey james
Harvey James, (Ariel, Sherbert, Sherbs, Mississippi), at his best on guitar for Richard Clapton. Harv looks nothing like Mossy!
haha great backing vocals by Mr Jim Barnes... no that voice anywhere
Really?I would'nt of picked that tbh!
Anyone got the lyrics? - after all these years I think I should stop singing "I need a jeweller coccyx chen"
@wuuudo No it was Harvey.
well clearly he didn't play the solo to this song, as seen in the clip, it's the guy with the white shirt and the red strat. Who does look a bit like Ian Moss
Ian Moss was never that skinny.... its Harv alright, he plays with a special style that is unmistakable.
LOL It's Glen A FUCKING Baker!
Without Moss's guitar work this would be pretty ordinary.
good clip.
