I recently found an old and very heavy sharp radio cassette ghetto blaster in a council hard waste collection ! a mondo rock tape in the deck ! I get if home plug it in and presto old school Aussie 80's music it doesn't get any better and probably the first time the tape has been played in decades ! as I get older I'll always be grateful to have been old enough to remember this music when it was first released even if I was only a kid !

I remember arriving Oz in "76, a snot-nose kid from NZ for a one year backpacking holiday and discovering the Aussie music scene, and never left...until 22 years later to work here in Singapore. Give my left testicle to go back to those days, awesome. Still remember (although fading with age) seeing INXS live at the Trade Union Club in Surrey Hills as one of many fond memories,,fuk lol

I know your name, I told you mine
We've stopped and passed the time of day
You work in town, I work at night
That gives us six until seven to work this out
If I seem a little strange
It's just the state of the heart
    I'm waiting here for you
    In the state I'm in
You are the moon, I am the sea
You pull me in and gaze on down at me
I was alone, I thought I was immune
    It's good to know
The door can still be open wide
If I seem a little strange
It's just a state of the heart
    I'm waiting here for you
In the state I'm in, oh yeah
    If I seem confused
It's just the state of the heart
    I wait in the dark
In the state I'm in, yeah, yeah
If I seem a little strange
It's just the state of the heart
    I'm waiting here for you
    In the state I'm in
    If I seem confused
It's just the state of the heart
You know I wait in the dark
In the state I'm in, yeah, yeah
It's the state of the heart
    The state of the heart
    The state of the heart
    The state of the heart

Just heard this version after only knowing Rick Springfield's cover for the longest time. Love both of them!
For me, Mondo Rock's original reminds me of a 50's doowop ballad with some slow 60's British rock feel and 70's instrumentation (specifically the electric piano). The sparse instrument arrangement gives it a very intimate feel, like you're in a tiny nightclub. My only criticism is that the last minute feels very repetitive and can either be cut down a bit or use some variety.
Rick Springfield's version is definitely a full-on 80's commercial ballad. It's a very lush arrangement with layers and layers of synthesizers, but it works quite well. I feel like the new bridge works really well considering the lyrics it transitions from, and the ending feels a less repetitive and more conclusive.
There are elements that I love from both. I love Mondo Rock's sparse instrumentation and slower beat, and prefer Rick Springfield's bridge, ending, and angsty lovelorn singing. It would be awesome if someone could cover this again with these elements.
