Nils Hamm didn’t need to go that hard on the alt art, but I’m glad it exists!
he did absolutely go hamm on it.
It’s incredible
Swans are beautiful majestic birds! ...in pictures and art. In person they are the absolute worst, freaking snakebirds.
Owls are very dumb.
@@Hugo_Book_Club also true
lol snakebird
We are going to need a 200 card commander format for all these staples.
Damn right owl is majestic and wise. Swans, geese, and ducks are mischievous devils.
Can't believe you said planeswalkers and creatures were all commanders ever printed. How dare you forget about Shorikai and The Grand Calcutron. I mean, it hits those too but still
There is one non-creature non-planeswalker commander in Shorokai, but it's an artifact, so this also hits it.
There is another artifact that has the words "can be your commander"
Doesn't hit some of the dual face cards like The Prismatic Bridge
how dare you forget awaken the blood avatar
Baleful Strix is my favorite art in MTG and ranks highly as one of my favorite cards. Owls are easily my favorite animal. The beautiful borderless art by Nils is just incredible. Can't wait to try to snag an AP of this or a nice print 🙂
There's an important difference between this counterspell and Swan Song that I haven't seen mentioned yet. This one allows you to open with Ornithopter, Bauble, Tormod Crypt or similiar into a 2/2 flying creature after countering your own stuff. Niche interaction, but could be super relevant in some tempo builds.
I'm surprised you mentioned Tron then immediately called the planeswalker part irrelevant - Tron decks in Modern rn usually play around an even split of creature and planeswalker wincons (Ugins and Karns); this card will be such a good sideboard piece against Tron because it can hit every one of its wincons, not just half of them
I really love this card design! Can't wait to see where this lands in Modern sideboards!
I'm glad there are lots of Commander staples coming from Commander Horizons.
That Nils Hamm borderless art ohh my.
Swan song is my favourite card and the fact the base art of strix serenade matches it's colour palette is just *chefs kiss*
I think the biggest difference between this and Swan is that Swan is more reactive. It's good at being proactive against upcoming Enchantments and the occasional sorcery while also being able to fight counter wars while strix is only proactive. Nothing wrong with that but it hits only things that are normally done at sorcery speed
Agreed.
This seems like an instant staple honestly
Eclectic games whiplash at the end, been going to that store for over a decade!
Awesome art for sure!
Owl have to get my hands on a few of those
Noted, Thanks
Swan song is much better on commander, the strongest spells are usually (USUALLY) instant and sorceries
I think it's neat this can get under Wrenn and Six too.
Since it doesnt win counter wars, I wonder if its going to be worth occasionally countering your own stuff with this. Say you play a sheoldred and they play counterspell, you could play this as a 2/2 flier for U by countering your own sheoldred. This might be a better move than saving it for their next creature in some board states, especially if the flying matters. Bonus if their counterspell was a value generating one and you fizzled it.
Congrats on the preview; this looks sweet!
It does!
3:40 Forgot about Backgrounds going in the command zone... well they only do things for the "real" creature commanders anyway.
Just finished building my bird tribal deck, so thanks wizards for this new inclusion 😊
Me too! I got Ishai and Francisco as partners, with a big double strike and combat damage payoff theme
Wash away is also basically "for one blue counter target commander spell" and that's a
Wow! Amazing card!!!
Love it
What a fucking SICK preview!
I'm gonna lose so many games where my Thalia, Vial, Trinisphere or similar is countered. 🙃
That's great, but also 2/2 bird reprint
with all these new eldrazi’s coming out and all these cast triggers, if they stick i wonder how many people are going to remember whirlwind denial. a random uncommon from theros beyond death, worst case they can pay, not so bad case it’s most of the time 2U counter a spell and against tron dropping an eldrazi its getting both parts of it
In Legacy I am definitely interested in a card that counters Chalice on 1 or a ramped creature (Emry, Caves of Choas Adventurer) that was the first place my brain went.
I feel like this is a crazy good sideboard card in today's modern, countering everything important in titan while being able to counter scion on the draw amongts all the other high impact creature, Planeswalkers and artifacts seems pretty good ngl
but all in all sick card, will be looking for a playset in that gorgeous alt art
You're clearly the child of an owl and a swan! ❤
I think you’re underestimating this card for Modern. I think it’s playable in the main with the right kind of build, like a Snapcaster Blue Moon/Control archetype.
I love this card. There are too few cheap pieces of interaction for creatures that are not removal allowing powerful ETBs to take into effect. This is also a great answer for The One Ring.
strix seranade really is swan song 2. it hits 3 card types of which 2 are the reason why you are playing it with niche potential on the 3rd. i guess the one thing you an't stop with this troublesome pair would be battles, which is ok until they print wren and battle or oko thieve of battles or even possibly battle of the dream-den
Owl counter your commander!
As a Brit, I can confirm swans are F tier birds
That alt art made me moist.
The cards ability is YES!
Seems to me that the difference between the bird spells are that the Swan is aggressive, protecting your degenerate combo from counterspells, while the owl is more defensive, keeping big finishers from hitting the board.
I wonder how many times I'll die to one of these 2/2s six turns after countering their sheoldred
Yey! Happy to see modern Horizens is making commander staples!………….
God Wizards really has me regretting this set…
In some ways it's much better at stopping combo, but it's worst at protecting your pieces.
Love the set hate the price
The swan was justified in that video. It's just hanging out with its family and some beast with a camera tries petting it, like yeah that's an appropriate time to bite and hiss.
Neat card. Kind wish they had just reprinted Swan Song though.
I think it would be great against Hammertime
Just giving blue more broken counterspells
XD planeswalkers are already so do-do in commander now this isn't gunna help.
In casual commander this is awesome. I doubt this will be too pushed in cedh. Big reason to play counterspells is to protect your own wins from opponents interaction. This doesnt hit instant/sorceries...which every counterspell played in cedh hits.
Very few counterspells in cedh hit creatures, because most of the time people dont really care outside of like grand abolisher or something. Stopping value isn't the same as stopping a win or protecting your own.
Hitting a Grand Abolisher or an Oracle, or a Commander, is big.
And an extorting Goblin who lives in the docks
It hits all commanders (*except Yuriko, the Tiger's Shadow) Boom! Gott'em boys! :: overly self congradulatory finger guns ::
Unless you’re using a commander with Eminence. Can’t target Edgar if he never leaves his throne.
Derevi as well.
And of course uncounterable commanders (Niv Mizzet Parun, Surrak Dragonclaw)
At least it doesn't have a free alternative cost.
This is basically twice as powerful due to what it's able to hit
definitely better than wash away
This card screams commander, but it would work great in modern, too.
If this is an answer to any commander that can be countered, I guess you could say that it's....a STRIX-ly better card in commander. I'll see myself out.
Don't worry everyone, commander, I mean Modern Horizons 3 definitely was designed with modern in mind and not just as a way to sell more commander product
It would not surprise me if Strix Serenade gets banned tbh. In Modern the state of the format is so strong giving your opponent a 2/2 flier instead of whatever creature or artifact they are casting seems so much better than people realize for 1 mana.
I swear to god if we don't get baleful strix in modern...
Merfolk? *Prof voice*
I still don't understand why 'An offer you can't refuse' isn't more desirable than 'Swan Song'.
Cause In CEDH you give much more advantage with 2 treasures. Although Krarkashima loves it, cause it basically a ritual
For the same reason that cards that produce Treasures are more desirable than your average 2/2 token.
We need a new card type to group with Battles and Kindred so that Sparrow Sonata can counter those
Will be in Future Sight Remastered
oh boy, cant wait for timeless to be 4x swan song 4x strix serenade 4x toxic deluge dot decks. I shall name it "8 songs of misery" here and now.
Battle can’t be countered by either of them 🥲
I am gonna play this purely for the art if it isn't absurdly expensive
You didn't need to say boogeyman.
Yeah I did. Boogeyman.
i dont think this card is actually very good in cEDH
i doesnt protect your combo because it cant hit instants (counterspells), and you really dont wanna counter stax pieces most of the time because they tend to stop your opponents too, so the better way to deal with those is to kill them right before youre planning to go off
idk, i might be wrong
1 mana counterspells are very efficient, and the fact that this can hit commanders and creature combos is a pretty big upside for more controlling decks like talion
its competing with a lot of other counterspells though, and the fact that it can't win you a counter war is a major downside
I dont think it's really competing with much. The list of one mana creature counterspells is very short - add in hitting One Ring, Forge, Winter Orb, Citadel and similar and it's truly unique at one mana.
Damn Cedh seeming more and more miserable the more they show this set
Errrm achtually, I don't think it technically counters all commanders if your commander is that weird sorcery from Strixhaven.
I have mixed feelings about this one. It's a good answer to all those commanders with ward, but so is Wash Away
4 for me pleez
No you do not have a one ring, you have an Owl party on Wayne.
I love modern horizons 3 but I also hate it. It has some really interesting cards but absolutely broken shit too.
I’ll admit I wasn’t here for the last two Modern Horizons, but that sounds pretty consistent with the feelings people have about those two as well. It seems MH is made with the idea that the best way to get people to buy it is to make overpowered cards.
I would say preorder this card because modern is going to abuse this
Yeah what we needed, one more card that makes any commander that costs more then 3 unplayable
Countering Grief is a big deal in modern
*Pushes glasses through forehead* strix serenade doesn't counter backgrounds
They arent Commanders.
@PleasantKenobi but choose a background says it is, if you choose one. (Also, I understood what you meant and my baser instincts kicked in and made me say it.)
But they aren't commanders. They just live in that zone.
I thought we were playing pedantry, so I wanted to be pedantic. :P
I just feel like this card is gonna be super salty in Commander, and won't see much casual play. If anything then cEDH, and hopefully some players can do something with it, in Modern, Vintage or Legacy. And I mean, that's what MH should be about - so honestly, I like that card (for those formats).
Still don't know, why there are Commander-Decks in a Modern product though xD
Yeah I already rarely see swan song in my lower power pods because it's a little expensive compared to other viable counters, I can't imagine this card won't become much more expensive.
@@eewweeppkk I'm not talking about the price here. I only talk about powerlevel and saltyness
I’d be fine with the Commander decks if they were also making Modern decks for the Modern set. And the only paper Magic I play is Commander.
@UkuleleProductions Power level and saltiness are very strongly correlated with price. Low power pods aren't avoiding mana crypt just because it's powerful, many high cmc commande decks could be built fairly with a crypt to get their low power shenanigans online earlier - but the biggest barrier is price.
Hardly anybody is putting expensive cards into casual because the biggest appeal of casual is that you don't need to pay to play to the same extent as high power. Regardless, my point is in agreement with yours so I don't know why you felt the need to correct it anyway.
@@eewweeppkk Wasn't trying to be mean or anything. I just didn't see the connection, and thought maybe you missunderstood me.
Still I think, my point is a bit different than yours. But obv we don't have to fight about, when we both trying to archieve the same thing 😅
I think the exact opposite of a lot of these commenters: I think Strix Serenade is BETTER than Swan Song, because it’s a nearly unconditional, 1 Mana answer to the massive meta threats we’re currently seeing in cEDH. CEDH is currently being terrorized by creatures like Dockside Extortionist, Orcish Bowmasters, and of course, Thassa’s Oracle: giving your opponent a 2/2 bird instead of 10 treasures is invaluable, especially because most of the best interaction cEDH decks run only interact with Non-creature spells. Fierce Guardianship, Force of Negation, Deflecting Swat, Offer You Can’t Refuse, and so on; Swan Song is redundancy for non-creature removal, while Strix Serenade is the best creature Counterspell outside of Force of Will. It has far less redundancy in the deck, and hits massive format staples like the aforementioned Dockside, win cons of popular decks like Kinnan with Basalt Monolith or Tidespout Tyrant, and can even just completely hose some very popular Commanders that try to power themselves out early with fast mana like Tivit, Atraxa, Dargo, or Etali. Strix Serenade is WILDLY powerful, and it’s probably going to make its way into most blue cEDH lists.
It is gross how WotC needs people to thank them for doing work for them
No it isn't. Stop clutching your pearls. This is a normal thing you do to ensure you are transparent and clearly disclose working with them (even just getting a preview). Wizards aren't an evil monster you have to find a problem with every single thing associated with them. Try to be a little more reasonable.
ruclips.net/video/By2JSc7pdY0/видео.html Hahaha... except my local game store is using pre-release kits for their EDH league instead of precons. :')
Also fark your Teferi.
I was just thinking boy howdy I wish Swansong was even more annoying.
This is going to be so toxic in commander...
Owl >>> Stupid Swan
Did someone just make a blanket statement about mtg? Ahem;
Prismatic bridge, awaken the blood avatar, every single background card, and a handful of uncounterables such as dragonlord dromoka if we're getting particularly pedantic.
#NotAllCommanders
Congrats WotC. More staples for EDH. At this point, the format might as well be a few hundred staples that form the decks people play because the rest are just too weak to play.
"We really need another 1 mana way to counter people's commanders" - Nobody who plays Commander
The difference between “Turn that in to a bird” and “give your opponent a bird” really can’t be understated in commander and youre completely misrepresenting this card by describing it as such.
I do not understand what difference your comment implies.
@DrSavitruc so the difference is one sentence implies Lignify and the other implies Beast Within
@@DrSavitructurning a commander into a bird = they can’t recast it until it dies, this just counters it. the youtuber is misrepresenting it in the title to get views
To be honest, this is a minor difference. Sure a commander can be recast or a card can be reanimated from the graveyard instead of being transformed into a useless bird, but 1 mana to counter most relevant threats and win cons is a massive feels-good either way.
The advantage of stuff like Kenrith's Transformation is that it actually turns your creature into a deer with no abilities so it stops static abilities from threats such as Sheoldred while not allowing an opponent to interact with the transformation without removing the enchantment. Strix Serenade also has an advantage though in that it prevents the opponent from triggering ETB abilities, and given that Get Lost is so common now tranformation auras aren't as untouchable as they used to be anyways.
Honestly bro, the difference your pointing out is super niche, rarely will it make a difference unless one is facing certain matchups, and either way both effects wouldve been insanely powerful anyways at a single blue mana at instant speed...
@@faviansanchez5501 it’s not and your wrong but your not obligated to be right so it’s ok
Broken
This is not as near good as Swan Song in cedh.
What are we complaining about today?
Ironic, that you appear to be being negative?
@@PleasantKenobi negativity atracts negativity!
Or your just being presumptive at best, and a twat at worse. Hard to tell really.
@@PleasantKenobi too bad. I just acted toxically, just as you do in comment sections when there's an slightly critcal comment about you or a thing you said. You get what you give dude.
God what a lame card.
as wise man once said: "Bird it *the* word"
