  • I ate like Maddie Lymburner for a day! I am neither endorsing nor condemning Maddie or her diet. This was just an experiment to see how much her diet (according to one video she made) would cost me.
    Here's her channel: / @maddielymburner
Here's her What I Eat In A Day (Raw Vegan) video: • WHAT I EAT IN A DAY VL...
BREAKFAST: [*I'm guessing like 370 cal]
"herbal tea" (it was red in color) $0.18 ($3.29/18)
Sugar baby watermelon (big and oval shaped) organic
-looks like she ate most of half of it (it's 46 cal per cup. Probably like 8 cups?) $2.50 ($4.99/2)
LUNCH: [*165 cal for half of the smoothie]
Raw vivo life protein powder (1 scoop, vanilla) [*don't actually buy/eat. Just factor in the price]
*I'm guessing "1 scoop" is 25 g. One pack of vivo life powder is 988 grams and $31.49. 40 scoops per pack, so $0.39 per half scoop. ($31.49/80)
    1/2 frozen banana [*50 cal] $0.11 ($0.87/8)
    1 cup frozen wild blueberries [85 cal] $1.83 ($10.99/6)
Unsweetened almond milk (looks like a cup) [30] $0.45 ($1.79/4)
Viv0 life raw green super food for her "thrive" in wildberry flavor [*don't actually buy/eat] $51.61 for 30 servings. I'm assuming she used half a serving. $0.86 ($51.61/60)
*the original smoothie was twice this, but I'm assuming she shared it with her BF.
**the protein powders combined are about 100-200 cal
    SMOOTHIE TOTAL: $1.39
    LUNCH 2: [*475 cal]
    2 big mangoes [400 cal] $4.00
    1 cup fresh blueberries [43 cal] $1.43 (there's 3.5 cups of blueberries, so I'm eating 2/7 of it. $4.99 x 2/7)
*originally had about 8 strawberries plus half a cup of blueberries, but I didn't want to buy subpar strawberries, so I'm just using all blueberries instead.
    LUNCH TOTAL: $5.43
SNACK: [*200 cal] (Would be an additional $2.)
    Like, another mango [200 cal]
**I'M GOING TO OMIT THIS MEAL TO BRING MY CALORIE TOTAL DOWN TO 1700
DINNER: [*270 cal for half the juice]
2 cups chopped of dragon kale leaves [165]
*I'm calculating Maddie's total kale use as 75% of the kale I bought and Fabiola gets 25%. I'm using 25% for my serving of smoothie and 25% for my salad)
    $2.00 ($4.00 /2)
    1 english cucumber [90] $0.88
    1 lemons [10] $0.40 ($1.99/5)
    Gingerroot [20] $0.10
    2 apples [250] $0.68 ($1.35/2)
    *green smoothie for 2
    Salad: [*435]
2 cups of chopped kale [70 cal] $0.00 (see kale amt under the juice)
    2 tbs tahini [180 cal] $0.28 ($8.99/32 oz)
    1 tsp dill $0.19 ($4.49 for half a cup. 24 tsp in half a cup. So, $4.49/24)
1 tsp garlic powder $0.16 ($3.99 for half a cup. 24 tsp in half a cup. So, $3.99/24)
    1 tbs maple syrup [50 cal] $0.23 ($14.99/64. 32 fl/oz bottle, used half a fl/oz.)
    1 tbs lemon juice [5 cal] (a lemon) $0.40
    About a cup cherry tomatoes [30 cal] $2.00 ($3.99/2)
About half a cup chopped cucumber (probably from the 2 cucumbers from earlier) [count as 0 cal, since it's from the smoothie ingredients and it's barely anything anyway] $0.00
    A couple tbs hemp hearts [100] $0.42 (there's 1.5 cups total. So 12 "servings" $5.02/12)
*that was 1 bowl all for her
My price total: $18.05 (about 1700 calorie diet)
Maddie's original price total with dill, extra mango, and supplements: $21.49 (about 2000 calorie diet)
Monthly price total (for my 1700 calorie diet, no supplements): $547.20

Don't let the naysayers make you bitter. Us subscribers subscribed to your channel because we like your videos just as they are - the math, the realistic kitchen (that you call "dirty," lol), the whole works! Keep doing what you do!

This was really interesting. Thanks for doing this (so I don’t have to!) This diet doesn’t appeal to me, but it does remind me that I need to eat more fruits and veggies!

I love the math! My favorite line was “I found her lack of salt disturbing!” 😆

Great job. I was waiting for a new video. 😃. I watch Fabiola. Just a heads up, she uses organic produce. This way of eating can be expensive. Also I am always peeing, from all the fruits and veg. 😂.

MATH!! OH GOD THE HORROR!! LOL.
Also, I'm glad you used the diets of not THOSE raw vegans, because they may be problematic. Yay for picking ones that have reasonable/followable diets. 😁

Yeahhhhhh I wasn't going to touch Freelee after all the hate she's already received. 😂 I was initially going to check out rawkristina, but one of the top links that showed up was actually someone else already analyzing how much her diet costs and I didn't want to reinvent the wheel.

@@SarahLovesFood you did well! LOL. I think a few people have done an analysis of their diets.
As you found, most of the raw vegans are also doing the SOS...no salt, oil, or sugar. Which, frankly, is crazy and sad.

You can ask any vegan and one thing we can all agree on is that a raw vegan diet is very expensive.
When I lived in central California with TONS of produce stands I could easily eat raw vegan, I was able to fill my entire trunk up for $20 in the summertime, now that I live in northern Idaho there is absolutely no way I could afford it. 🤷🏼‍♀️

I always knew vegan diet was expensive. But wow!! Little over $18 “per day”? Yikes! Thank you for sharing your vegan study. Can’t wait to see your part 2👍 Great job as usual.

A vegan diet that's high in starch and mostly uses legumes for veggies is actually the cheapest diet - but most big YT and IG vegan influencers I've run across follow a very veggie/fruit-heavy expensive version of veganism. Juicing in particular is Ex.Pen.Sive. 😂

A vegan diet can actually be less expensive or quite expensive depending on how you choose to eat a vegan diet.😁 I feed my family of 6 for less on our vegan lifestyle than I could on our omnivore lifestyle and we're even healthier than we were before. Just all depends. Our main component being beans, rice, potatoes, etc. And then we pair with fresh or frozen veggies. Eat whats in season for variety and less expensive fresh foods and frozen varieties for whats not in season can be less costly too. But my spice and herb cabinet is super loaded with flavor flav. But when we have a little extra wiggle room in the budget we throw in some more expensive components. Specialty nut butters, meat substitutes, vegan ice creams, etc. Mostly just for special occasions.

@@SarahLovesFood Thank you for acknowledging that! I was actually coming down here to the comment section to suggest you do a starch-based vegan diet day to compare. As you can see, this video paints a skewed picture of a vegan diet especially since raw veganism is extreme and unrealistic for most people. Also, it would be fun to watch since I enjoy the math you do :)

I remember seeing Fully Raw Kristina doing a budget challenge, showing how you can eat a raw vegan diet for "only" $20 a day. It made me wonder how much she usually spends.

Hahaha I love your sense of humor and personality. Keep up the great videos! The diarrhea may be a FODMAP issue lol but I feel you, I’d rather have anything other than that much fruit. I’d need a burger.

I think you did a great job of showing, without passing judgment, that a lot of raw vegan videos represent an extremely aspirational diet that is not dissimilar to, say, early 20th century depictions of the wealthy supping on rib roasts and aspics and the like, things that required a lot of money and hired help to prepare. These raw vegan videos often communicate, if implicitly, that the person eating this food has the disposable income, free time, and easy access to quality produce to acquire, process, and masticate large quantities of raw fruits and vegetables on a daily basis, which is simply not the case for most of the people watching. It is easy to internalize the message that if you eat many pounds of fresh fruit every day, you too can be one of the apparently rich, thin, conventionally attractive people who live these idealized internet lives. It's definitely not a new phenomenon, but I think it's one worth deconstructing as it morphs with the times.

All the disclaimers, crazy you have to do that.
Fun fact, not all tahini is raw, and commercial almond milk is usually not raw.

Plus the maple syrup, if you REALLY want to get technical....

I thought of that too. When I saw the canned beans which are definitely not raw I realized these ladies are probably not 100% raw. I’m actually vegan myself but I know very little about the raw vegan diet because I have absolutely no desire to do it lol.

We are not vegan or vegetarian, but for a treat in the Summer, one of my mother's FAVORITE things to eat is cut a watermelon in half and eat out of it with a spoon like that. 😁 Even better if it came from a local garden rather than the supermarket. They always seem sweeter that way.

I wonder if we are related by distant relatives. You look so much like me, my mom, and my grandma. You will make certain faces that I swear I feel like I'm looking at my mom or grandma. You look a lot younger, but the features are there. Sorry I've been watching your channel for a while now and I just HAD to finally say that. Sorry if it's super weird. Probably the weirdest RUclips comment I've ever left.
