As someone with a wife, there is a distinct benefit to being able to split a bridged setup in half so she can look at cool stuff at night too.

My wife thinks NV is cool but there are bears and bugs outside so night bikes or camping never happen :(

Saving for my first NV device now. It's taking awhile saving only about $150/month. Our household income is $5k a month and my wife and I agreed on $150 in "fun money" for each of us per month, so I'm just putting 100% of my fun money towards a NV purchase. 10 months away from getting a monocular and then an extra 2-3 months after that to get a mount and dovetail.

My brother in law is ex-army and had the chance to do night vision stuff. He said that although binoculars sound better at first, you ultimately lost depth perception and his team would constantly bump into stupid stuff like branches. By the time he left, the teams were basically opting for monoculars because although you lose night vision in one eye, the depth perception kept is well worth the trade and its only when you get the super Gucci stuff that you see the experienced guys running binoculars again.

This falls into a different category in my mind as though they’re PVS-14 style monoculars, you’re actually getting a different monocular all-together that’s modular. Nice succinct video 👍🏼

@@BrassFacts I see it as an opportunity to get a cheap image intensifier and drop it into one of the housings as a loaner. A big part of the reason it was an easy choice for me is that one of my 14's was secondhand Optics Planet and the lenses must have been something cheap because it had a sort of wave to it. Not noticeable looking at a stationary object or blank wall but when scanning you'd see a wave like you get with cheap LPVO's and fisheye effect. New milspec lenses are tree-fiddy and not something I wanted to mess with myself just yet so it was a great opportunity to send both in to go into new housings. If a person only had one 14 I don't think I'd recommend buying another just for this, so I def agree with you there.

It's worth noting that there's a significant difference between the quality of prints you can get out of a $200 desktop printer and a $4000 industrial printer. You can get a lot more precision out of the machine, you can run higher temperature materials, and it's just easier to get a solid, dependable product. Would I trust a printed setup churned out of an Ender 3? Probably not, but just judging by the look of these things, they wouldn't, either.

I bought my 14s back in 2019 and have been pretty intent on never bothering to upgrade to duals. I figure that having NV in the first place already means I'm ahead of the pack 90% of the time and when it comes to dudes with dual tubes I'm still more or less on equal footing. This has been the first NV device that's made me have any interest at all in upgrading. My only question is since you lose manual gain, do they put in some sort of automatic gain? I don't know much about how NV actually works, I just know its practical uses.

    • @CatholicKit

No manual gain means you just get what autogating gets you. My 14 doesn’t have manual gain, if there is a downside im not aware of it. Autogates when light changes, and I never see a situation where one would need to turn up sentitivity where it wouldnt blow out the image. I dont think you’d really miss it, but I havent used a set with manual gain much so I suppose thats something youd have to look at in your usage.

I think it's important to mention that Nocturn uses Multi-Jet Fusion 3d printers (unless that's changed recently), which even to get just a few up and running, you're talking about millions of dollars, with tons of specialized training from HP (they have the mjf printing patented, so they are the only ones who can make and sell mjf printers rn). MJF is WAY stronger than even high end fdm printers. It's strength is about as close as you can get to injection molded with 3d printers, in fact according to HP it's strength is between 95-99% to that of injection molding.

I am in a strange position, I can reasonably afford duals, but I still haven’t put a ton of time on my mono. I currently go put maybe once a month if I am lucky, it isn’t worth it to me to upgrade until I use the mono I have more.
