John and Phil (the guy on the guitar) and His music producer Ross wrote this together when they were touring. They were missing their wives and families and this was the song they wrote about that. John always gives every member in his band a shout out during each concert. They are more like family than workmates. They key members of his band have been togther for over 30years. ❤
What it was about was being away from those who love you. He once described how his wife wouldn't talk to him, for a few days before he left, on a tour. She was angry that he was leaving her at home again. That's why the line in the song, rather apologetically,"please, there's nothing else I know how to do."
I’ll never understand yet always be grateful he didn’t make it big overseas, we got to keep this wonderful talent all to ourselves from the 60’s when he started winning king of pop several years running to the 2020’s where he was still singing strong at about 70yrs only stopped due to cancer.
