We just got our pot and searched recipes and found yours, we made these tonight and it worked! Why am I surprised? I’m 52 years old and was always intimidated by those flimsy bags of beans in the store, lol...no more! They turned out wonderfully, thank you!
Good evening, Jill. I want to thank you for explaining what "Quick Release" means. I just purchased me an Instant Pot Viva in the color of red. I'm in love with it... thanks again.
At last!!!! Jill, after watching so many RUclips videos, you are the only one who explained the different release methods so simply and clearly. Thank you so much!!!! 🙏🏼
I'm about three solid months into my vegan journey and even more recently just found out about the miracle that is instant pot. I'm so glad I found such a great plant based channel , thanks for all the work you put in ! 💚
The iPot is a miracle! I don't know how vegans live without it! I buy bulk rice and beans from Costco for less than $1/lb. This food is practically free. And there's no way I would put in the effort to cook those foods without an instant pot to do most of the work for me. Now I just gotta figure out a way to save money on my expensive vegan diet :P
Okay, I made a version of your beans last night. Instead of onion and garlic, I added in smoked onion powder and smoked garlic powder, then some smoked salt. (They were all smoked at home over apple wood.) My oregano was just plain Jane stuff. These were the best beans EVER. Thanks so much Jill! :)
I tried something similar with beans I had already soaked for about 20 hours. It was my first time using the iPot. They turned out great! Thank you for all of the wonderful instruction.
I presoak 1 small bag for 24 hrs. Cook manual 4 mins high, 10 min natural release. (I only cook for 2). there are so many different ways. thank you for showing me another way to cook beans. Love your channel and planning on getting your book!!!! You are the reason I purchased the instant pot.
You inspired me so much since finding your channel. I bought an an instant pot and since then having been experimenting a ton. Yesterday I made tacos with beans, sweet potato, mushrooms, basil, deconstructed gardein crab-less cakes, and chao "cheese". I call them crab-less tacos :)
I just discovered you today, Jill! How have I not before??? I have had my ipot :) for like a year, and over the last couple months I am finally getting used to it. Just watching a few of your videos today, and I learned so much! I love your fun way of cooking plant-based! Thank you!!! I will definitely buy your book and want to watch everything!! I am new to plantbased and pressure cooking, so glad to find such great resources - recently discovered Chef AJ, McDougall, and now you! woohoo!
Jill McKeever, Simple Daily Recipes Hello Jill I bought a pressure xl before finding you or would have opted for the ipot, will your cook book still work for me if I purchase it, thanks for the wonderful videos I love your energy :)
You are adorable. I just got an instant pot, bought it for my 60th bday, which is tomorrow. Your videos are very helpful. Just started eating HCLF vegan and love it. Going to make your goulash recipe this week. Thank you.
Hi Jill, I'm so glad I found your channel! I recently ordered an Instant Pot and I've been looking for some delicious plant-based recipes to try. Looks like I came to the right place! These beans are burning a hole in my pocket, and while they're cooking I'm gonna binge watch your videos. :) Thanks!
hahaha!! My five-year-old just said "oh, look!! she is so cute!" :) I picked up my instant pot last night and already have used it today to make black beans. They turned out perfectly! This was my first pressure cooking and Instant pot experience. Thanks for the simple instructions!
+WINDY S Welcome to the iPot family! 🙌WOOT WOOT🙌 if you have questions AFTER you read the manual, holler for me. I have a healthy Instant Pot Recipes playlist plus a iPot cookbook on Amazon called O M Gee Good! Instant Pot Meals, Plant-Based & Oil-Free. If you decide to buy the print copy you can get the Kindle version FREE. 😃
I love your recipes that I decided to buy your book. I've purchased the kindle version cause I can just do the recipe without touching the physical book. At least now I know how to soak beans in the IP before cooking them.
Amazon knew I had bought your book and I was able to get the Kindle edition free! I'm so excited! Now I can meal plan from my home AND while I am at the grocery store! Thank you, thank you, thank you!
Jill, Thanks so much for posting this. I made mine with chili powder and cumin with pico de gallo on top. The beans turned out perfect. It's nice to find some good vegan Instant Pot recipes to try.
Thank you and for taking the time to let me know how the recipe worked for you. I like the way you cook. If we were neighbors, I’d be at your house eating lunch right now. Feel free to holler for me if you ever have Questions about a recipe or an ingredient I use. I’m always happy to help.
Jill I finally got an electric pressure cooker!!! 😃 So happy to finally be able to home cook beans! Your videos will come more in handy from now on!! 🙌
I just made half a pound.. Cooked for 30 min after the quick soak with natural release and they turned out great! Thanks. My first try before your video was a flop
Thank you for the quick soak method! I love my instant pot and make a lot of beans and this was a great time saver for me. I look forward to investigating your other recipes and ideas.
Thanks for this introduction video. I fell in love with black beans cooked in the I-Pot. I didn't have liquid smoke, so I used about a teaspoon of smoked paprika instead. I am not a good cook, so cooking is not my favorite thing to do. These beans are so easy to make that I make them often.
I love both of the bean videos you've done and secondthe beans and grains series suggestion. For awhile it seemed like you did more of the live tyle broadcasts which just aren't my thing. I missed your videos so I've been so pleased to see so many posted lately! You're my go-to IP person!
Thank you Rabee Fam for watching and letting me know what works for you. I'm always grateful to read positive ways to improve the viewing experience for my audience. Producing a grains and beans series, aka playlist, is an awesome idea I will be happy to create. :D
Hello, love your videos! Want you to know that I made the Cannellini beans and they came out perfectly!!! I was so proud of myself, thanks to you!! K, bye will keep watching you...
I have been blessed to get the 8qt for Christmas! I got the guts up to use it tonight for the Black Bean Soup recipe that was included with the Pot. (Oil free, though.). The flavor was yummy, but the beans were still a bit hard.
That's a bummer, jammymommy. Been there. I find I get the best results with black beans when I let them soak anywhere from 30 minutes to an hour; drain, cover with an inch to two inches of fresh water, season then pressure cook for 30 minutes.
Lol. You’re adorable. Got the Instant Pot for Christmas and never got it out of the box...until last night. Saw a chili recipe in the book that came with the thing & realized I had the ingredients (mine are red chili beans) so I’m going for it. No, I haven’t read any instructions but you seem so clear I’m going to just go with you now. My beans are in a bag, not cooked, so first things first. What an uplifting cheerful and humorous persona you have! First RUclips video and it’s like I won the lottery this morn. That said, I’m trying to be vegan so not sure about all the substitutes yet (it’s a cancer thang). This video is good because: 1. The lighting is really good for me! I can SEE you (and your smile) 2. It’s well thought out. I tend to “drift” when there’s too much to think about. You broke it down for me nicely . 3. Like your wall in the background. I had to give a thumbs up for that before I even saw the entire video. Thank you.
The DUO-ENW Instant Pot model lets you disable keep warm and has a detachable power cord. The disabling keep warm is a life saver. It also remember the last cook time instead of starting at 30. I have the IP60-DUO-ENW. Got it at Walmart on black friday for $85. PS - Could you do a series of these on various grains/beans? It would be so nice to have one source. Like quinoa (I still cook this on the stove), kidney beans, navy beans, chickpeas, lentils, split peas, etc.
Yep, you just press the mode button again. So, I hit manual (and keep warm light lights up), and then I hit manual again (and keep warm light turns off). Then you can use the timer button or whatever else. The only downside is that it doesn't have a counter after it's over like keep warm does, so you don't really know how long it's been sitting there. I really only use it when I'm home and I have a good idea of how long it's going to take. But, like you said, keep warm delays a NPR, so if I'm using NPR and I am going to be there, I disable keep warm mode.
Thank you. You are a lifesaver. I tried the brown rice the exact same way you made it, and rice has never tasted so good. Now i'm going to try pinto beans.
Jill McKeever, Simple Daily Recipes I am doing The McDougall Program for Maximum Weight Loss which is a plant based no oil diet I have to eat. So your recipe book will be perfect me.
I am a HUGE McDougall fan and know just the kind of meals you're enjoying. :D Did you see the McDougall webinar a couple of months back where they promoted my book? Mary broke down and bought an iPot and my book to boot then showed them both off. I have the clip here... ruclips.net/video/ELBnP77cpkA/видео.html
@@JillMcKeever Just got your 2 cookbooks in the mail. Instapot and Vol 1 Soy Curls. Never heard of a soy curl before your videos, I’m looking forward to trying them out. They seem to be a Fan Fav! 🥳
Jill, I just got my Instant Pot and figured out how to make a wonderful batch of cabbage cooked soft like we like it. In next couple of days, I want to make navy bean soup, cooked till very soft with lots of thick rich soup. About how long should I pressure cook them for assuming I do the quick soak method? How long would you say if I soak the beans overnight? If I don't hear from you by Sunday, I am going to go with 20 minutes, since I don't mind if the beans break up. I just want the soup mostly. Thank you.
Haven't bought it yet. became vegan last September and regularly cook beans and brown rice. so very interested. I'm thinking I'll get one. just got Airfryer
Jill....cool and informative video. I love to cook and this week, I will be purchasing my first pressure cooker. And after careful consideration; I will be purchasing the Instant Pot Pressure Cooker. And I love making black bean vegan burgers and your video was very helpful. And lastly, how long can the beans stay frozen and how long can I keep them in the fridge. Um, keep up the great work showing us your knowledge and I just subscribed to your site.......Thanks again Jill and keep up the great work!
Really enjoying it! Love the tables for how to cook all the various things. I use that as a quick reference. I'm 3 months in on my Plant Based Diet. I'm not totally off oils but cut them WAY back and working towards it as I add more recipes to my list. Your channel and iPot book have made the transition much easier for me. Went to Casa de Luz for first time last week with a few folks from the YMCA and your name came up. Think you went to Health Fest in Marshall TX (maybe together?). Sounds like a great event so I might check it out next year. Maybe I'll meet you there if you go! Thanks again.
Do you put the top back on the instant pot while you're first heating up the beans? I just got my instant pot yesterday, so I feel blessed to have found you and your recipes, here on youtube and now also your book on amazon... will be buying that today. :) Thanks for sharing so much info about the instant pot.
Hi Jill - Thanks for this. I was just wondering why you soak the beans first. I have found I can pressure cook beans in my ipot with no pre-soaking. But maybe you know something I don't!
Jill, im new and i love your videos. You are so adorable and funny!! Do you ever do what i eat in a day?. That would be very helpful!!! Thank you for including me in your sweet youtube family !!
Question: How do you store your leftover beans? Do you just freeze them or is there a special method? I'm watching and saving all of your instant pot videos for cooking in my dorm room! 😂 We're only allowed either an instant pot or a rice cooker, and/or perhaps a blender. Plus we can rent a mini fridge, but that's it. 😩
Hi Jill...Can I cook these black beans the same way you cooked the pinto beans, dry and for 30 min? Will it come out cooked? Or do I have to soak it first before cooking it?
Black beans were the first meal I tried in my new pot. I just used your pinto bean recipe and adjusted the time for black beans according to the chart in the manual. They were good and so quick. Can I use less water so they are not so soupy or will that mess with the cooking.
Using less water will mess with the beans ability to become tender. Never skimp on the water, no matter which bean your cooking. My rodeo rule for water and pressure cooking beans: Soaked beans need to be covered with one inch of water. Dry beans need to be covered with two inches of water. Trust me on this one. As for the extra seasoned bean water, it can be used to cook rice or used in place of broth for a stew or chili recipe.
I'm so glad to hear it. I try very hard to share only solid information. When I'm guessing or trying something new, I'll be honest with everyone about it so they can watch me fail or succeed right in front of them. I'm not afraid to mess up when it helps us all learn.
Sure will! If you look through the whole Instant Pot Recipes playlist in the top half of my channel page, you should find chickpeas. I have several bags of beans standing by for more "How to Cook..." videos. Stay tuned. Thank you for watching. I hope you're a subscriber to my channel. :D
Will the soak/cook timing for these black beans be the same for red beans, pinto beans, and other similar beans? I have a ton that need to be cooked and I have 3 iPots to get this done quickly 😉
Use the [Pressure Cook] button. Instant Pot has relabeled their buttons. All the recipes and videos you find me referring to the "MANUAL" function, those are PRESSURE COOK recipes. :D
Jill, do you rinse the beans before they go in the iPot to get rid of the gas bubbles? Do you always want that much water in there (an inch above the beans)? Will you come live with me until I can cook as well as you do? 😄
Hi Terredee, after soaking, I typically drain off the beans in a colander. If I see gas bubble residue, I'll rinse them, but I don't rinse the beans just to rinse the beans. And yes, I always use that much water, which is somewhere around 4-5 cups.
Well, I own two Instant Pots, so if they both died by way of a freak accident, then I would drag out my trusty Presto stove top pressure cooker. I wasn't yanking your chain when I said "I have been pressure cooking for 20 years." I learned and failed and learned all I know with a stove top pressure cooker. I've only had the electric cooker for just over 2 years. ;D
I'm actually a newbie to this and am trying to cook black beans as we speak... The soaking technique is taking allot longer than 1 hour.. more like going on 2.. Will keep you posted.
I highly recommend that you quick soak. I have cooked directly from dry (for an hour, if I remember correctly), but it is real easy to either undercook or overcook. There is a reason she tells us to quick soak and a reason why the normal practice is soaking dry beans...
Hi there. I bought your book on Amazon around July10...rec'd it on the 12! Love it...however, I'd like to download the free version since I bought the print version and I don't know how to get the free version. I checked the emails Amazon sent...and looked at the link in my account...but don't see how to get the free download/digital version, which I would like! Help!
Go to Amazon's Matchbooks, look up my book and click to buy. Amazon will remember you bought the book, then ask you which device you want to download it to. ;D Pick the device and Amazon will do the work.
+Jill McKeever, Simple Daily Recipes so maybe better question is do you find that you doing the quick soak method before cooking the beans eliminates the need for the tablespoon of oil (which helps with the foaming that can occur)? Or maybe just the natural pressure release?
Thanks for all these great tips! I've got the black beans in the ipot now. Does that quick soak work on all dry beans or just black? I also bought some chickpeas I want to try next.
I find Mexican oregano at my regular grocery store. If your grocery store has a bulk spice section, check there first. Otherwise, check that area where all the Mexican ingredients live together. Being Texan, I'm naturally assuming all grocery stores across the nation have this section. ;D
So you like when the skins pull away from the beans? Unless the beans will be used in a soup or chili, I really prefer my beans to stay intact. I've never tried cooking them in my IP--I just buy canned--but back in the day I made several attempts at boiling them on the stove--all failures. I really like the texture of canned beans. I don't suppose you have cooking tips for getting them tender but still shiny, black, and firm??
I totally get where you're coming from, my daughter feels the same way about her black beans. For a firmer bite, you could reduce the pressure cooking time to 10 minutes.
Hi Jill! I just got my 8 qt and have been going to town! Can I easily double, triple, or quadruple this recipe - because I have the room in my 8 qt? Thanks!
Taken from the Ball Blue Book of Canning: "The amount of salt called for in canning vegetables is too small to help prevent spoilage; the salt is there only for seasoning. Follow recipes for canning low-acid vegetables, but omit salt. Vegetables are made more flavorful by adding spices and herbs in place of salt. A small amount of lemon juice or orange juice, a tiny piece of citrus peel or a sliver of pimiento are also simple ways to enhance vegetables."
I ask myself, "Are these beans going into soups and burgers or eaten straight up on rice?" Straight up on rice beans are creamier tasting when they've been soaked before cooking. That's me and how I roll. As for the other buttons, the BEAN button does the same thing as when I hit the MANUAL button. Rice, according to the user's manual is for cooking parboiled and white rice. The cooker is still set to high pressure and you still have to adjust the cooking time to match the food. So it's really "six one way, half-a-dozen the other way." Same same.
DUO, found it on Amazon sale a couple weeks ago. Ordered 3, one each for my son and daughter, and ME! It's been fun learning and testing this new way of cooking. I also shared your channel with my offspring. I like the way you explain how to use the IP, so clearly and fully, especially well for newbies and include the new models comparisons.
I checked but didn't see anyone ask this. I have used my IP for a lot of rice but haven't tried beans yet. I was just wondering why you don't use the "Beans" setting?
Honestly, it's just a habit for me hit MANUAL then adjust the cooking time with the plus and minus buttons. The Beans button, along with the other buttons, has a preprogrammed setting (30 minutes, high pressure). Whether I hit BEANS or MANUAL, I'd still have to adjust the cooking time to match which bean I was cooking. Beans are not all pressure cooked the same length of time.
Look in the barbecue and marinade section of your local grocery store. I buy the Colgin brand because it is simply liquid smoke. Flavors are Hickory, Pecan, Apple and Mesquite. Your store may or may not carry all four. If not, I highly advise you go directly to the Colgin website, Colgin.com and buy it straight from them. You'll save money compared to Amazon's offers at the moment.
Thank you Aa! I played around and cooked with jackfruit years ago. I learned my family and I were not fans of it. We like soy curls more for all those meaty dishes.
...so I just made these....in my 8 qt. I followed the pre-soak but only let sit for 45 minutes, not an hour. I cooked 20 min on high, waited 3 minutes and release the pressure. They will make great mashed beans but for a salad they are too mushy. I like my beans "al dente" and I think next time I will cook for 15 minutes, see how that goes.
So, I'm a little confused about why you didn't open the lid until 45 minutes after it beeped. I get that you went off and did stuff, but are they officially done after the 20 minutes??
When I am not distracted by work, I will wait 10 minutes after the cooking time is finished, then release the remaining pressure from the pot before removing the lid.
You know how having plenty of water for cooking pasta is important for getting tender pasta? I consistently get tender beans when I make sure there's two-inches of water covering the beans; not two-inches measured from the bottom of the pot. I mean, two-inches measured from the top of the beans. My family doesn't care to consume the bean broth, nor do I, so keeping it is not how I need to roll.
So what makes this better than just putting it on the stove? If you're home, you can just let the beans simmer on the stove and go do stuff. Why should I buy this. It seems to cook the beans after 30 to 45 mins which is pretty much the same time on the stove.
+11 11 Good question, I can see where you’re coming from. Cooking with an electric pressure cooker eliminates my need to keep watch over the beans or pot. I can drop the food in, push a button or two, then go on about my day. The cooker I use has a Keep Warm function so when the cooking is done, the food stays hot. I can pressure cook beans, stew, soup, chili, batch of rice, a bag of red potatoes anytime I’m free to cook them. The cooker keeps that food warm until my family is ready to eat. As for cooking times, it’s been a while since I boiled beans on a stove. But I remember it taking at least 2 hours to cook soaked beans tender on the stove top, where as, pressure cooking soaked beans takes 30 minutes without tending to the heat, stirring, or checking water levels.
Jill McKeever, Simple Daily Recipes Thabks for the response! It sounds pretty good. I just want to make sure I don't buy another appliance that just ends up collecting dust :/

Excellent video Jill. Very informative. Thank you!
Thank you, Julie!
You are wonderful 💕
Made this recipe and we just love L❤️VE it!
Thank you. You are a lifesaver. I tried the brown rice the exact same way you made it, and rice has never tasted so good. Now i'm going to try pinto beans.
Thank you, SocratesOfHealth, for trusting me with your groceries. Let me know how the pinto beans turns out for you :D

Thank you! I was having a hard time finding a cooking time for pre-soaked beans.
I'm glad I could be of help. :D
I love the bean recipes! Thanks! 👍
Good to know! What bean should I cook next?
White beans? Or great northerns? :-)
Noted. THANK YOU!
So that’s what you use the Apple Liquid Smoke for. I started using liquid smoke after watching your videos! You make it look so easy. 🍎🌻🌵
Glad I could help
@@JillMcKeever Just got your 2 cookbooks in the mail. Instapot and Vol 1 Soy Curls. Never heard of a soy curl before your videos, I’m looking forward to trying them out. They seem to be a Fan Fav! 🥳
You make this look so awesome!
Thank you, John :D
Um, keep up the great work showing us your knowledge and I just subscribed to your site.......Thanks again Jill and keep up the great work!
i'm gonna get your cookbook soon
I totally made beans first! In fact I've made them twice lol I want to make a corn chowder soon too 😋
I ordered the book. Don't have it yet but amazon is pretty quick. Looking forward to getting it!
THANK YOU for supporting me!! How are you enjoying the book?
Really enjoying it! Love the tables for how to cook all the various things. I use that as a quick reference. I'm 3 months in on my Plant Based Diet. I'm not totally off oils but cut them WAY back and working towards it as I add more recipes to my list. Your channel and iPot book have made the transition much easier for me. Went to Casa de Luz for first time last week with a few folks from the YMCA and your name came up. Think you went to Health Fest in Marshall TX (maybe together?). Sounds like a great event so I might check it out next year. Maybe I'll meet you there if you go! Thanks again.
+Find Your Purple do you live in Austin?
The Austin area...kyle to be specific.
+Find Your Purple i'm in Northwest Austin we should meet up and eat lunch together! I love to eat
Do you put the top back on the instant pot while you're first heating up the beans? I just got my instant pot yesterday, so I feel blessed to have found you and your recipes, here on youtube and now also your book on amazon... will be buying that today. :) Thanks for sharing so much info about the instant pot.
I have the same question. Lid on or lid off during the soaking process? I presume lid on to keep the heat in.
I have the Power XL. I will try your recipes on my Power XL.
Let me know how it all works out ;D
I added a few more ingredients to your recipe. I deleted one of your ingredients. It tasted great! Thanks! I used my Power XL.
Please show how to cook both beans and rice together pot in pot if that is possible in the instant pot . Thank you.great video btw!
Not possible because they take different cooking times and water ratios. Cook one; transfer to a container. Rinse the inner pot then cook the other.
Hi Jill - Thanks for this. I was just wondering why you soak the beans first. I have found I can pressure cook beans in my ipot with no pre-soaking. But maybe you know something I don't!
Super-helpful video!
Wow, these look good. Do you leave the lid off while the beans are soaking? Thanks, Jill!
I didn't use the lid during the water heating up or soaking time.
if i were to use pork lard in the beans could i put it in the instant pot with the rest or would it be best to add after.. thank you
Jill, im new and i love your videos. You are so adorable and funny!! Do you ever do what i eat in a day?. That would be very helpful!!! Thank you for including me in your sweet youtube family !!
How long do you cook the beans in the instant pot?
Very helpful! You are great!
Thank you!
Jill what is the newest model of the Instant Pot ?
Question: How do you store your leftover beans? Do you just freeze them or is there a special method?
I'm watching and saving all of your instant pot videos for cooking in my dorm room! 😂
We're only allowed either an instant pot or a rice cooker, and/or perhaps a blender. Plus we can rent a mini fridge, but that's it. 😩
What would you do with all the water remaining in the pot now that peas is cooked?
thanks a lot👍👍 One question: is it possible to cook those beans with less water?
awesome teaching! I just shared with my mom who I just recently gifted with an instantpot. Love!!!!!!
Thanks again
Kind of thought that in the back of my mind so I went ahead and use the water you said turned out great
I'm so glad to hear it. I try very hard to share only solid information. When I'm guessing or trying something new, I'll be honest with everyone about it so they can watch me fail or succeed right in front of them. I'm not afraid to mess up when it helps us all learn.
can you go through other beans and how to take them from soaked to ready to eat.
Yes, soak times are the same for similar beans. Red beans, pinto, and black beans cook in the same time.
I need to get one I have been using an ancient pressure cooker time to upgrade?
I cannot get ur cookbook on Canada amazon😞
I'm so confused. I don't have a manual mode on my 6 qt instant pot control panal. Recipes say, hit Manual. What do I do?
Use the [Pressure Cook] button. Instant Pot has relabeled their buttons. All the recipes and videos you find me referring to the "MANUAL" function, those are PRESSURE COOK recipes. :D
Thank you, thank you. You are the greatest. "I'm your fan."
Thanks
Jill, do you rinse the beans before they go in the iPot to get rid of the gas bubbles? Do you always want that much water in there (an inch above the beans)? Will you come live with me until I can cook as well as you do? 😄
Hi Terredee, after soaking, I typically drain off the beans in a colander. If I see gas bubble residue, I'll rinse them, but I don't rinse the beans just to rinse the beans. And yes, I always use that much water, which is somewhere around 4-5 cups.
🐰💕
What would u do if ur instant pot wasn't hot and gave u mega problems? Clipso stove top pressure cooker is one of the best.
I've only had the electric cooker for just over 2 years. ;D
Do you have to quick soak the black beans or they cook from dry?
At the beginning of the tutorial, Jill walks you thru a soaking method using the "Saute" button. Easy..
madelinebound yes, I saw that, thanks. just wondering if you must quick soak or if it's fine to just cook from dry.
I'm new to your channel so you've probably explained this but why didn't you add oil to help prevent foaming?
+Amy Hackbarth I stopped cooking with oils years ago. I don't keep cooking oils on hand.
Nevermind, I found your chickpea recipe ;)
Love your videos! You frequently use mexican oregano. Where do you get it?
I find Mexican oregano at my regular grocery store. If your grocery store has a bulk spice section, check there first. Otherwise, check that area where all the Mexican ingredients live together. Being Texan, I'm naturally assuming all grocery stores across the nation have this section. ;D
Thanks for the reply! I live in Ohio and have never seen it BUT I've never looked in the ethnic section of our stores. I'll have to check it out.
Simple Daily Recipes Great! I'll give a whirl this weekend. Thanks, Jill!
If you do 2 pounds of dried beans, do the times change?
No, the time remains the same.
Hi Jill! I just got my 8 qt and have been going to town! Can I easily double, triple, or quadruple this recipe - because I have the room in my 8 qt? Thanks!
+Suki Just Suki I started doubling beans and rice in my 8 quart instant pot and have had great results. I have not tried to triple recipes yet
Since you can alot. My husband can't have sodium but can you reduce or eliminate salt in canning?
Taken from the Ball Blue Book of Canning: "The amount of salt called for in canning vegetables is too small to help prevent spoilage; the salt is there only for seasoning. Follow recipes for canning low-acid vegetables, but omit salt. Vegetables are made more flavorful by adding spices and herbs in place of salt. A small amount of lemon juice or orange juice, a tiny piece of citrus peel or a sliver of pimiento are also simple ways to enhance vegetables."
How do you determine whether beans need to be soaked or not? Also, do you ever use the BEAN button? or RICE button?
I ask myself, "Are these beans going into soups and burgers or eaten straight up on rice?" Straight up on rice beans are creamier tasting when they've been soaked before cooking. That's me and how I roll. As for the other buttons, the BEAN button does the same thing as when I hit the MANUAL button. Rice, according to the user's manual is for cooking parboiled and white rice. The cooker is still set to high pressure and you still have to adjust the cooking time to match the food. So it's really "six one way, half-a-dozen the other way." Same same.
Did you make the liquid smoke yourself??
No, I buy the good stuff. Although I have made my own smoked salt.
I have a new IP (2018). It doesn't have a button to adjust the heat. Do you know how I do that on this new 6qt pot?
Which model do you own, LUX or DUO?
DUO, found it on Amazon sale a couple weeks ago. Ordered 3, one each for my son and daughter, and ME! It's been fun learning and testing this new way of cooking. I also shared your channel with my offspring. I like the way you explain how to use the IP, so clearly and fully, especially well for newbies and include the new models comparisons.
How come if your making beans, you don't use the preset ?
In most of the recipes I see the presets are not used.
Help me out here, why save the cooking liquid? Why not simply drain the beans? Is there an advantage to saving the beans in the liquid?
If you want to make black bean soup or Refried beans you need that liquid.
Beans are not all pressure cooked the same length of time.
please add cumin to those beans and a squirt of vinegar when done. .Cuban style, ohhhh and green pepper and bay leaf
I will do that next time, thank you, Lissy :D
Yeap! that's the Venezuelan way too
Apple Smoke where did you get it?
Look in the barbecue and marinade section of your local grocery store. I buy the Colgin brand because it is simply liquid smoke. Flavors are Hickory, Pecan, Apple and Mesquite. Your store may or may not carry all four. If not, I highly advise you go directly to the Colgin website, Colgin.com and buy it straight from them. You'll save money compared to Amazon's offers at the moment.
Cool channel! Have you tried making tacos or carnitas with jackfruit??! Make a video if not.
Thank you Aa! I played around and cooked with jackfruit years ago. I learned my family and I were not fans of it. We like soy curls more for all those meaty dishes.
you had me at bunny ears. lovely introduction.
...so I just made these....in my 8 qt.
+Suki Just Suki sounds good! Everyone likes their beans just a little different I'm glad you worked out how to cook them the way you prefer. 😀
Good video. I have beans but have been afraid to use them in my IP. I need to put on my big girl panties and just do it.
+calendarpage you can do it!
I noticed you don't drain your beans. I like my beans for other things (not soups) without the extra liquid, especially for freezing.
Why so much water remaining after pressuring the peas? Could you have put less water?
You know how having plenty of water for cooking pasta is important for getting tender pasta? I consistently get tender beans when I make sure there's two-inches of water covering the beans; not two-inches measured from the bottom of the pot. I mean, two-inches measured from the top of the beans. My family doesn't care to consume the bean broth, nor do I, so keeping it is not how I need to roll.
Must add cumin and red vine vinegar bay leaf and pepper to make the real Cuban beans
Do you get a free pair of rabbit ears with each book?:)
Use smoked paprika instead of liquid smoke. It tastes better
