I agree soaking them makes for more consistent texture and less toots! I was never a fan of beans... until I went WFPB and made a concerted effort to incorporate them into meals, and now I adore them. I've learned that if you consistently make an effort to eat things you aren't terribly fond but are good for you, your microbiome adjusts and you'll actually enjoy, and even crave them! Now beans go into everything from casseroles, soups and stews, pureed into sauces and dressings, and even smoothies and desserts! I think my favorite is an amazing easy cheesy fermented bean spread I make out of white beans, some hemp hearts, oats and psyllium using a combo of the live microbes in the brine from my fermented red peppers, homemade yogurt, and some miso paste. I especially enjoy it slathered onto my daily fat veggie wrap! The Instant Pot just made cooking them soooo much easier, and I always batch cook big pots of beans and grains to use all week or freeze for variety! BTW, I always save the all the aquafaba (bean water) when I drain my beans to add to soups and stew, or to replace the oil in dressings, saute with, etc. . We're on a tight retirement income so nothing goes to waste! Love your channel, subbed!

I have never had a problem cooking any bean in the instant pot. ALL of mine come out perfect. I cook mine in reduced sodium vegetable broth. I then freeze them in Kerr freezer safe canning jars.

I don't know what took me sooo long to cook dry beans in the instant pot. I made the black beans today and OMG, they are the best black beans I have ever had in my life! Thank you for inspiring me to go for it, I'm so happy that I did. My husband and I keep saying OMG, as we're eating it, lol. I'm going to try other beans, too.

I have always had a lot of dried beans - I LOVE them even though I am a meat eater as well. It just hit me I could use my Insta pot to cook them quicker - which is how I cam across your page!! So here I am following your tips/recipes to assist in making meals for my camping trips. Easy simple and nutritious is what I am after - that I can freeze and/or vac pack as well.

I usually cook any kind of soaked bean for only 8-10 minutes on the instant pot. Never had undercooked beans. But I usually do natural release, just letting the beans sit until whenever I’m going in the kitchen later on.
I also do the pot in pot method, so I cook them right in the glass containers or stainless bowls.

I finally decuded to buy an Instant Pot, after eating whole plant foods for three years. I found I was less motivated to cook and I was drawn to the rice and beans cooking in larger quantites and freezing, as well as set it and forget meals in the instant pot. After making a sloppy joe batch today, I cooked basmati rice. I followed timing based on web based findings. However, I'm going to try a slightly different cooking method next time as it was stickier than I like. Beans are my next thing to use the Instant Pot for, probably tomorrow evening after we eat. I can cook the beans and package them for freezing. Thanks for the video. I've saved it.

I know you say a 1 to 4 ratio of beans to water but in your black bean recipe, you said 2 c soaked beans and 4 cups water? Help? Also, did you measure your 2 cups of beans DRY or after soaking? Thanks. Can’t wait to make this

How long to cook can also depend on how much beans your cooking.

  • @jageo48

Great video, Michele. You are _wasting_ that precious bean water from soaking and/or cooking, by letting it drain down to the sewer. There is not much better house plant watering than smelly ole bean water. Your house plants will thrive like never before. It will help complete the missing pot microbiota.
Another hint is that powdered spices seem to sink to the bottom and burn. I use black pepper-laced turmeric for its anti-inflammatory and anti-cancer test positive. Maybe I'll try your 4:1 ratito.
