    I love how he changes it from "you can have it all, but how much do you want it?" To "you can have it all but WHY would you want it?" So much for fitting for the person he was, and it just makes more sense.

      I look at it as an extension of his LOVE of the Beatles... Oasis' favorite band, so they had that in common. I think he rly loved them that much..so he loved the song bc it mentions them and bc oasis is v b-influenced.

    I love how he always apologizes before playing this song, rather defensively insisting it is a good song, while subtly telling people to fuck off if they don't like it. Who else would proudly cover an Oasis song in the 90s? Only Elliott could play this so beautifully. (And I must confess, I liked Oasis, too). He was so loved. Wish he was still here with us.

    • @fshoaps
      @fshoaps 2 года назад +6

      Oasis was the most commercial band of the time, and represented “mainstream rock”, at the time. Elliott was mostly lo-fi while Oasis would include 250 guitar parts on one song.
      But regardless Elliott and Noel had a similar gift, and would’ve made the best, most Lennon-istic collaboration together.

    A great cover, and I love how both the song choice itself, and the fact that he feels the need to 'explain' it before the song and even during its intro, shows the gulf between the totally unpretentious, music-loving Elliott and his unfortunately often obnoxious, hipper-than-thou, uptight fan base

    • @jamesoakes1819
      @jamesoakes1819 8 лет назад +11

      Funny how you generalize Elliott Smith fans that way considering Oasis built their entire career by being obnoxious, hipper-than-thou, uptight dickheads.

    • @mywhychromosome
      @mywhychromosome 8 лет назад +14

      Jack Ruby You can call Oasis a shitload of things, but uptight is not one of them. They were bloody animals! And their music taste also very mainstream working-class (although Noel did love some oddball bands), not very hip at all. The Kill Rock Stars' crowd is what I mean by 'hip', I.E., if a record has sold over a certain a mount of copies, it must be shit, and it's only the undiscovered, unloved stuff that can be genius. But as far as 'obnoxious' goes, in terms of Oasis, you are spot on! : )

      +Natalia Yeah, he really had a sort of pent-up resentment towards being an 'indie' icon and the whole Kill Rock Stars crowd, people who would not want to hear him give love to a mainstream group like Oasis. It'd come out in interviews occasionally, but mostly in person he was too gentle and polite so it'd end up coming out something more like "aw come on guys, no need to get upset, just chill, I understand why you might get upset, but don't..." etc, instead of just saying "Fuck off!" like he was thinking. Even in the Autumn De Wilde E.S. book, which features interviews with a lot of his hipster friends, they talk in a very confused manner about his love of certain mainstream bands, and try to explain it away that he must have been joking or something. One of the bands mentioned actually IS Oasis, and she tells a story about how he heard "Champagne Supernova" being played while he rode a tilt-a-whirl ride with this girl at a carnival, and was super excited, and she talks about how he must've just been in a 'silly' mood or 'drunk' to like such pedestrian music. Ugh. Sorry, long post!

      Hippie Guy So? A cover doesn't have to outdo the original. I think it's really cool that he played this!

      You don't have to be under the influence to like the original song over a cover of it, you mentalist.

      Richard Smith this guy was drunk enough to say a throwaway cover wasn't as good as the original. wow.

      I recall an interview with Noel Gallagher once wishing he could write lyrics like Elliott. He would be much more proficient. Elliott didn't really like comparison or labelling artists a certain way.
