High regards for late, great Elliott Smith. Depression is molestation of the mind and body. Unfortunately it invited itself into my soul. Music is like a dog, it’s always loyal, doesn’t steal, doesnt cheat--it’s my best friend.
Too many people have shaped an image of Elliott in their head based off his music. His music isn’t a direct copy of his personality. It’s a small part of a human being that was so much more. We have to stop thinking of him as an extension of his music rather than the his music being am extension of him. You can see him joking in just about every show and interview. People who knew him knew a gentle funny guy who was fun to be around. He didn’t kill himself. I wish the fan base would wake up and see that. The investigation is still open pending evidence that’s never coming. What’s sad is his family will never get justice for what happened to home

I will have this on repeat and share this video with as many people who truly FEEL music that I can in honoring Elliott Smith and what PASSION can create!!! Elliott has inspired me to be a more open/ loving/ caring/ passionate person, which I think is the TRUE goal of life :)
The first minute and five seconds are so cool. There's so much perspective in that time frame, but just imagine being Elliott up until 2:25 like that's such a vibe to come out to, full of people that are there to solely see you.
Isn't that a sweet moment? I guess because of BBC guidelines in some cases, he wanted to be certain of the laws, or the show format and rules. Maybe he was just kidding, more than likely, Elliott had a great sense of humor.
@@roninreturns he was and he wasn't kidding -- listen again for his joke - this show had nothing to do with the BBC -- but if you watch any late night show they are not supposed to be drinking and it's been an ongoing joke for 60 years about what the guests and the hosts have in their mugs...
Elliott was the epitome of greatness, and Jon Brion was complimenting in a way, that wasn't overbearing, I've watched this hundred plus times now, never gets old!
Here's an average looking guy playing decent guitar (and piano) and singing like he's in his bedroom just working song's out. And I find it one of the most moving and heartfelt performances that I've heard in a very long time. I listened to Elliot back in the 90s but after not hearing him for some years it was very nice to stumble onto this wonderful performance.
He is so relatable in his awkwardness. He is clearly a little messed up here and he asks the jon if he can drink quietly and he just announces it to everyone. What a character this guy was. A complete inspiration for people like me and a tale of mental illness and strife. I really wish he was still with us.
A pairing of some of the most supremely talented recording artists and live musicians of this generation. Watching the documentary and learning about what may have been happening at that time is heartbreaking to imagine. I watch this show almost once every few days and I will never take for granted the everlasting power that their music has on me.
Such a great show. Two totally different personalities but with shared musical talent. I can't stop thinking that Jon Brion is the ying to Elliott's yang. One an extrovert and part of "showbiz!" and the other a mysterious introvert. Both talented instrumentalists and performers, but just so different. The dynamic just reminds me of McCartney/Harrison (or, in fiction Ray Stantz and Egon Spengler!)
Shout out to fellow introverts, it's all gonna be OK. Listen to Elliot but get out and give it your best shot too, humans suck sometimes but we gotta keep on trucking! Love love love
I asked my wife how many albums would be have had if he hadn't died. she said about 7. just watching this again makes me realize his songwriting genius all over again. its been about 2 years since I've watched this and its so great! He seamed to be such a beautiful person and thinking about if he had lived makes me want to cry. In a small way I guess we should just be happy he existed at all :)
I know this comment is old but Jon Brion has made some of my favorite movie scores of all time. Eternal Sunshine of the Spotless Mind, Synecdoche New York, Punch Drunk Love, Magnolia, he’s one of the best!
I would have loved to hear a duo album with Mehldau and Elliott.. If you're not familiar with Mehldau, he's an incredible talent in the modern jazz world.. actually a bit of an Elliott smith type himself.. just super deep and full of texture and color.
Freddy Rick - Wow, I can hear everybody laughing. It’s so funny you’ll have to use it again. When you get nominated for an Oscar or become one of the best songwriters ever then you can prove your fashion sense to the world. Maybe we all will have a laugh then.
Ever since I saw good will hunting in the cinema in 1996 I knew there was something special about Elliott Smith and have been listening to him ever since. What an amazing artist and a genius songwriter. Seeing Jon Brion another one of my favourite songwriters playing with him is just a dream.
It's, I think, the best and funniest appearance I've seen Elliott Smith make. Incredible, intimate performance and collaboration. Oozing talent, sincerity and humour between them. I'll run out of superlatives soon so I just want to say Thank You Elliott for saving me time and time again, from the moment I first discovered your songs and continually so. I've yet to come across a songwriter with more fearlessness when it comes to baring your emotions in your songs, and in doing so allowing many of us to find some weird kind of solace in your pain. I hope you have finally found peace. R.I.P. Thanks for sharing this video.
same as in his songwriting lesson video, where he says "if you u like it, it must be good." This is the kindness his troubled heart was about, and is as a music teacher myself, so POSITIVE in how encouraging the message is- that it informs my own methods. Beautiful. Love this comment
An emotional rollercoaster of sadness and happiness overwhelms my soul every time I view! The truly beautiful, kind and loving soul, that is Elliott Smith 😍 Or better yet, a "Quiet, Strong Beauty" quoted by Elliott at 31:54 commenting on a songs feel to himself 👌 He continuously beats himself up mentally, throughout the interview 🥺 It's awesome to see Jon, who is obviously an admirer, steering him towards happiness in his empathy 🥰 Most of us that love and follow Elliott Smith can relate, with consistently downgrading every action we do 😏 So keep being a loving, caring and passionate human being, because once we're gone, who knows how in depth our strength empowers someone else in need 🥰😍👌
Why did I just find this now.. I've loved Jon and Elliott since I was 14 and didn't even know they played together. I am now 22 years old. I feel like crying.
This is Prolly the 100th time I've watched this. So good. When I got into Elliott's music I could not believe the consistent level of greatness in each and every track. He left behind an incredible catalog. I can only imagine what he would've come up with in these last 10 years. Fantastic work :)
Elliott Smith is the most important thing in my life, but out of choice I haven't listened to him in six months. However, when the day comes that I listen to him again, this will be first on my list.

yes because he made great music, but also i feel it in my heart that he was an amazing person. and no not everyone is special, or not to me anyway. some people just blow your mind and inspire you on a level that you cant explain. for me elliott smith is one of those people. Elliott Smith was an amazingly talented and different musician who while being incredibly underrated was a special person that deserves to be called special in my comment
Elliott has been to this day one of my favorite artists and I can't express the place I feel for him deep in my heart. He was SUCH an amazing talent. I'm just so thankful for what he left all of us through his music. To get into the mental illness side of it all is another topic entirely. I can only handle so much of him at once but I binge on him once in a while and it's like an ecstasy. "Soft and beautiful."

Elliott has inspired me to be a more open/ loving/ caring/ passionate person, which I think is the TRUE goal of life :)
this is a beautiful thing to say my dude, you've shone a light into my heart today
I don’t trust many people with Elliott’s music. I hate it when they just say it’s depressing. My family says he makes “drug music”. So dumb.
🥹🙌🙇🏻
The first minute and five seconds are so cool. There's so much perspective in that time frame, but just imagine being Elliott up until 2:25 like that's such a vibe to come out to, full of people that are there to solely see you.
Elliott asking if it's ok to drink there....
I love this man.
Isn't that a sweet moment? I guess because of BBC guidelines in some cases, he wanted to be certain of the laws, or the show format and rules. Maybe he was just kidding, more than likely, Elliott had a great sense of humor.
And his off-handed quip "Oh, there aren't children here?"
@@roninreturns he was and he wasn't kidding -- listen again for his joke - this show had nothing to do with the BBC -- but if you watch any late night show they are not supposed to be drinking and it's been an ongoing joke for 60 years about what the guests and the hosts have in their mugs...
roninreturns yeah elliott was a hilarious guy
Elliott was the epitome of greatness, and Jon Brion was complimenting in a way, that wasn't overbearing, I've watched this hundred plus times now, never gets old!
NO ONES GONNA TALK ABOUT BOTTLE UP AND EXPLODE-
Here's an average looking guy playing decent guitar (and piano) and singing like he's in his bedroom just working song's out.
Still one of the best videos on youtube
+Bjorn Bols I yet found it! absolutely agree!!! I'm huge fan of Brad and Elliott too!
Yes
Agree.
Thank God Elliott Smith Dead For Wearing Leather Wrist Band
@@dequanrick2209 You _really_ hate that wrist band. don't you?? xD
That rendition of Waterloo Sunset, my goodness, so beautiful.
Such a great show. Two totally different personalities but with shared musical talent. I can't stop thinking that Jon Brion is the ying to Elliott's yang. One an extrovert and part of "showbiz!" and the other a mysterious introvert. Both talented instrumentalists and performers, but just so different. The dynamic just reminds me of McCartney/Harrison (or, in fiction Ray Stantz and Egon Spengler!)
if you're reading this, you are loved
you’re the best. 🖤
love you too
you're just saying stuff to be nice
@monklington everjet no
Love you too pal
17:16-18:06 hahaha great moment, Good setup by Jon and Elliott was so quick to get into the bit
I literally just replayed the moment like 10 times 😭 it’s so rare to see him joke like this on tv
I needed to see this so badly today.
I love every moment of this video.
Please don’t ever take this down.
Shout out to fellow introverts, it's all gonna be OK. Listen to Elliot but get out and give it your best shot too, humans suck sometimes but we gotta keep on trucking! Love love love
I can confirm, it's worth it :)
I’m an introverted extrovert
@L P Prick alert.
@L P you must be fun at parties
@L P by somebody else, it wasn't his own doing lol
Probably my favorite 43 minutes of video on the internet. Two polar opposites when it comes to performing. So unique, so perfect.
I’ve been a fan of Elliott’s for years and I barely discovered this treasure. This makes me miss him even more.
Helps me so much. To a beautiful tomorrow.
@@dequanrick2209 Fuck off man he pulls it off
@@dequanrick2209 We don't know without a doubt that it was leather...
@@dequanrick2209 cause he probably slashed his wrists recently, heard he did that afew times.
GambleFella99 ignore him. He is leaving the same reply on every comment of every single video with Elliott smith.
I just turned 50 and can't believe I've just found Elliot Smith today, what a beautiful voice!
honestly one of his best performances on film.
I love the internet so much. I’m so thankful that I’m able to experience this beautiful beautiful thing.
this took too long to find and there aren't many ways to overrate it.
This is probably my favorite concert of all time. Really beautiful.
Jon Brion wow and Elliot Smith is new to me but to see these two legends together is amazing
Never thought I’d see those two names next to each let alone performing together! When 2 worlds collide
Elliot & Brad that is, didn’t know Jon before this video but he seems to be a musician in his own right
I know this comment is old but Jon Brion has made some of my favorite movie scores of all time. Eternal Sunshine of the Spotless Mind, Synecdoche New York, Punch Drunk Love, Magnolia, he’s one of the best!
@@papajohn6839 I love Eternal Sunshine! I got into his Meaningless album after finding this. I will have to listen to more of his scores too
Every time I watch this video I end up crying. Cheers.
I would have loved to hear a duo album with Mehldau and Elliott.. If you're not familiar with Mehldau, he's an incredible talent in the modern jazz world.. actually a bit of an Elliott smith type himself.. just super deep and full of texture and color.
@@dequanrick2209 because odd fashion sense is a crime punishable by the death penalty? xD
Freddy Rick - Wow, I can hear everybody laughing. It’s so funny you’ll have to use it again. When you get nominated for an Oscar or become one of the best songwriters ever then you can prove your fashion sense to the world. Maybe we all will have a laugh then.
Brian Blades - Thanks for the heads up.

This is like the 5th time I've seen that same comment. Is like some meme for fuck faces?
Ever since I saw good will hunting in the cinema in 1996 I knew there was something special about Elliott Smith and have been listening to him ever since. What an amazing artist and a genius songwriter. Seeing Jon Brion another one of my favourite songwriters playing with him is just a dream.
Elliott’s performance here for Independence Day blows my mind every time.
This is my favorite RUclips video of all time. I don't know how many times I have watched it...
Tears. Don’t know how I hadn’t stumbled upon this absolute gem earlier. Thank you for existing.
I love this performance, probably my comfort video at this point
The Glenn Gould vocal noises over Bus Stop. Awesome.
+Som Vinter nicely put

Kra Z Kapin I relate to your statement like I relate to suicide by drowning
@@marball that's pretty shallow
16:44 once I heard him say that, I immediately looked through the comments and found this near the top
same as in his songwriting lesson video, where he says "if you u like it, it must be good."
This is the kindness his troubled heart was about, and is as a music teacher myself,
so POSITIVE in how encouraging the message is- that it informs my own methods.
Beautiful. Love this comment
why is this the first time i am watching this! my god so many years of my life wasted not knowing this existed.
Elliott I miss you ❤️ yours melodies, your sensitivity, your art...
This video has really gone viral in the past few days. Wish we still had ES with us and so grateful for JB.
These guys are just another level of passion for music theory and love for musical expression that seems to be dwindling by the year. Thank heavens for documentation of these moments
Gone too soon. Betrothed to the darkness. So much love and light to anyone who can relate to this marvelous soul.
🙇🏻
I can’t believe I’ve never seen this before. This is so beautiful.
WOW! What an interesting pairing i love Elliot Smith's work & on the jazz side Brad Mehldau is amazing!!
I am separately obsessed with these three musicians, and to see them all in one place just absolutely blew my mind
Brad playing with Elliott .... I never knew such an amazing thing existed... until now. Thank you !
Never heard of this show till just now...what a treat...interesting characters...so sad to be without Eliot Smith...what a great show and a shame we don't have more of that these days..or any of it...
Just beautiful.... All these years later it still hurts to know he is no longer with us. First time I have seen this video, thanks so much for sharing so we can all enjoy. Much love to you all....X
Elliott Smith... Perfection within a non perfect but beautiful shining soul, can't stop listen to his songs since I found him a couples of months ago
We play this on repeat some days at home!! The delight of reminiscing every second of this wonderful performance, enjoying Elliott's energy and Jon's ability to bring him back to comfort. Beautiful joining. Unequal music. Incomparable art
Floored by that rendition for indipendence day...unexplicable beauty.
Waterloo Sunset pierces my soul.
yes because he made great music, but also i feel it in my heart that he was an amazing person. and no not everyone is special, or not to me anyway. some people just blow your mind and inspire you on a level that you cant explain. for me elliott smith is one of those people. Elliott Smith was an amazingly talented and different musician who while being incredibly underrated was a special person that deserves to be called special in my comment
Elliot playing keys for Everything Means Nothing = mind blown
Elliott has been to this day one of my favorite artists and I can't express the place I feel for him deep in my heart. He was SUCH an amazing talent. I'm just so thankful for what he left all of us through his music. To get into the mental illness side of it all is another topic entirely. I can only handle so much of him at once but I binge on him once in a while and it's like an ecstasy. "Soft and beautiful."
Agree. So sweet but so heartbreaking. I love his music but sometimes it is just too painful.
John Brion looks like Dwight from The Office
Michael!!
It's the face of trouble 🤷🏼♀️
Elliots music has a "The Office" vibe.
@@alexispaulson323 It's a working model 🤷🏼♀️
Something in his face reminds me of Ben from Parks and Rec as well
I love how Jon gets Elliott to open up as much as he does. It's beautiful.
This video is freakin' gold. Amazing piece of history. The comments here are almost as priceless. What a gift that man was.
Thank you so much to whom ever made this available. I go through phases of listening to Elliot Smith's music and always find new ways to appreciate him. Love to all here---you are loved beyond doubt.
So strange , I only get to know this music 10 years after Elliott Smith's death. I love it because the music is so alive and so timeless. Thank you soo much for posting this!!
