LIVE 7/28/2000
Fuji Rock @ Naeba Ski Resort, Niigata, Japan
When I was working on the documentary "Elliott Smith: Heaven Adores You", many friends and fans were gracious enough to share their keepsakes with us - memories, videos, pictures and etc. During the production, one of Elliott's close friends and collaborators gave us an old VHS tape that had a performance that they had acquired and kept for a keepsake. I had it transferred from VHS tape and digitized for potential inclusion in the Heaven Adores You project, but it never made the final cut. With the blessing of the tape owner I am uploading the full performance here. This seems to be previously unreleased footage. I hope you enjoy it.

Of course an outdoor Elliott Smith concert would be raining 🌧
the last show he did, june 7 2003, was pouring rain. my friends and i didn't venture out into the downpour. have regretted it ever since.
the music cellar. That’s an interesting story. I’m sorry you’ve got regrets about your decision to not have attended but I don’t think anyone could have predicted the ultimate outcome so don’t be too hard on yourself.

THERE.
Such an underrated guitar player, amazing chord knowledge and super original finger styles ...miss him, he had so much more music to give
man needs long fingers to play his songs on guitar
Just riveting to watch him play. He was a brilliant guitarist, so often overlooked.
@@JonShade-fy2gm Overlooked I think it a better term than underrated. Generally, Elliott was critically acclaimed when people did take the time to rate him. His subject matter made much of his catalogue too inaccessible for most radio stations... So sadly he was overlooked by many. But those who know, know, and within the industry he's a legend. It's painful to see all the far inferior guitarists on the Rolling Stones top 100 guitarists list. He rivals several in the top ten. On acoustic, I think he was one of the most consistently amazing performers. Like he could outplay Neil Young with his feet. Great drummer, great pianist also.
Anyway feels like his music has had a small resurgence lately. Is it just me or is he more popular now than at any point since the release of New Moon, or maybe even since Faboth.
@@JunkBondTrader I 1,000 percent agree with your every word. He was incredible, such a unique genius musician and songwriter. I was just listening to King's Crossing today -- one of my all-time favorites of his, and each time it's as fresh as when I first heard it. Just as unbearably beautiful. I fell in love with Elliott in 2000 and I can't even begin to express the impact he's had on my life. Lots and lots of musicians and bands I adore, but aside from George Harrison, no other musician means as much to me.
@@JunkBondTrader "Anyway feels like his music has had a small resurgence lately. Is it just me or is he more popular now than at any point since the release of New Moon, or maybe even since Faboth.

as time goes on more people are finding his music including the younger generation. some of his songs have been in newer and highly popular tv shows (rick and morty, mr robot). and younger popular musicians have mentioned elliott which also introduces him to more people (phoebe bridgers has admitted to basically stalking elliott). i discovered elliott when i was 16 or 17, around 2016, on a music sharing site from someone who probably discovered elliott via rick and morty. i have turned a few people on to his music in turn. his fandom continues to grow to this day. i think anyone who has a deep appreciation and love for all sorts of music and hears about elliott will become a fan.
the algorithm on places like youtube and spotify also helps people find music that is new to them. if you're a fan of sufjan stevens or nick drake or phoebe bridgers or whatever. theres chance the algorithm will stick some elliott smith in the autoplay.
This is my favourite of Elliots shows that are available on youtube.
People get caught up in his songs being sad or depressing, and forget that he was multifaceted. Look at him smiling, laughing and joking. He wasnt depressive, he just genuinely cared and wanted to express real emotion in his music.
He looks great here. Hes truly in his element. Thats the image im going to burn into my brain when i think of him as an artist. ❤
Elliotts show at bumbershoot is really good as well
I wonder if he was using at the time tho. I’ve noticed in other concert footage where he is happier, he has a beer bottle at his feet
Having a good band behind him brings out a different side in Elliott - he looks, and sounds, so assured and confident here. As much as I love how fragile and stripped-back many of his albums are, would have loved one more in this style too. Damn. :(
They recorded the beautiful and definitive album version of 'pretty ugly' together as a band, i think it was more or less during this tour, its a taste of what could have been ..
Yeah, there was a tonne of potential there. He was obviously an amazing solo act, but he wrote beautiful songs for a full band as well that sound amazing and moving as well.
He looks so confident here. In his element. Thanks for sharing.
I thought the same. Was he clean, I wonder, during this time? He seems so happy and into it.
I'm not certain, but I don't think he was here. his eyes kinda gives it away. doesn't mean he wasn't happy though
I'm pretty sure he was not. But he had also played messed up for the majority of his playing life, and was likely more 'in his element' while high. The show people often point to where he's supposedly farked, at Henry Fonda Theatre, is one where he's likely sober. I read that it was much harder for him to sing and 'make his fingers work' when he was clean... There's no in between...
He had to be clean because he was in Japan. Japan is very strict regarding drugs. And i love this vid more than the Beatles ever made me love them.
I'm thinking he had to at least be on Amphetamines and benzos since he was perscribed them. Like someone said it's highly unlikely he was shooting up because Japan is extremely anti-drug. But scripts are different. Heroin would make him a little slower and mellow so I'm thinking maybe he was on dextroamphetamine or some sort of amphetamine here.
I was there!!! 😊💖💖
I remember I was crying a lot because It was absolutely wonderful and beautiful...
I still love you so much, Elliott. XO
Glad he was able to go to Japan before he passed away. Didn’t know he has a big following out there!

Can’t stop crying... he seems to be trying to be someone we wanted him to be...having an Elliott night...hello out there...
No he wanted to do the big rock band thing for a bit and he obviously had a great time doing it.
@@itsgonnbeok7249 You're probably right, but he was once quoted saying something along the lines of "I'll tour as much as I have to if it means I can keep recording"
I know what you feel but, he was in good shape by that time. If you want to cry, check out this gig: ruclips.net/video/AAFhJJ_Ets4/видео.html
He was trying to be someone we wanted him to be? Uhh I don't notice any compromise in his approach to himself or his music at all. What are you talking about?
hes normally a pretty humble low key guy from watching his interviews and how he talks in between songs in acoustic performances, the fact that a lot of the people there probably didnt speak english may have boosted his confidence but also i agree he is definitley not new to macho type singing but also i swear hes doing a slight british accent here
Man, what a show. I can't believe this was 19 years ago. There's nothing about it that screams "90s" or "early 2000s". It could have been filmed yesterday. Truly timeless
lol yeah because your generation copies everything
@@moreodat479 dargh! damn young generation! they're screwing it all up!
Said every snob ever.
unfortunately, yesterday was not that good...
I dunno, the crowd is too present. Not a phone or camera in sight
@@glacierfruits5350 It's because it's in Japan, their audiences are generally just like that. A lot more subdued, like if they were really into it, you wouldn't be able to tell. I think they were though, there are quite a bit of his Japan tour sets on the internet in audio form, and he played mint in all of them and the crowd always seemed very attentive.
He looks so healthy and happy. I hope he was that day :)
I know he really looked so good and like he really enjoyed this gig!
To me he looks like hes in the peak of his drug addiction and obviously on drugs in the video, hence the happiness. You guys are just dumb😂
Being a functioning drug addict can actually feel great, almost all of the time. That's the real reason that people have such a hard time quitting. People usually quit once the drawbacks have truly begun to outweigh the pleasure and relief. It's wonderful enough that you can look past a lot of things going wrong in your life.
@@Liam.2000 well even if it was the drugs at least he was happy in the moment
@@Liam.2000 And you're just a dick! Fuck you!
All those melancholy days, those long, dark nights with nothing but his voice to console me, to help me come down...This is true love. Thank you for this glimpse into a moment in time that maybe I could have shared, if only I hadn't been chasing demons around Eugene, Oregon. I have loved a lot, but the love and adoration I have for a man I'll never meet is beyond what I feel for most of humanity. Thank you, Kevin, for the documentary and for keeping Elliott's legacy alive.
WOW!
Amen!
I really with the doc was available online to buy/rent. I saw it at the theater when it was released ,but I want to show it to my girlfriend who's never seen it and can't find it anywhere. Guess I'm gonna order the DVD.
Oops. Wish not with of course.
Took the words from my mouth. Thank you.
1. What an AMAZING set list
2. The bassist's band 'Quasi' is amazing, listen to the album Birds if you like Elliott.
3. The keyboardist is Ethan Embrys brother! He looks just like him too!
Great band
I was trying to figure out which was ethan what a trip
Sam Coomes deserves more recognition these days!
has anyone noticed the drummer loosing his sticks at 23:40 ? Elliott eyes closed completely in trance, slightly smiling after that, that smile tells a lot about who he was.
Kais Somai ty
hahaha
this is a beautiful comment, thank you for pointing it out. every time i come back to this video i end up re-watching this moment, and you're right, it says a lot about elliott
lol very subtle but definitely there. Then you see Scott, the drummer laughing in the next view :p
I forget when but I remember once Janet Weiss mangled a backup vocal during a song and Elliott couldn't help but laugh it off. I mean, Elliott could empathize with making mistakes live haha. He's always making facial expressions live, like wincing when he misses a note... furrowing his brow when someone yells "Free bird", rolling his eyes at dumb interview questions. You notice a lot of that when you look closely haha, Elliott was secretly a diva.
@@dewg0ng421 And about Scott, the drummer, who brings the fury after dropping the stick.
I have to confess: I didn't know this guy until last night, when a good friend of mine introduced him to me. Instant love! I want to listen to every little song he made
as long as you eventually find the artist that’s all that matters
Start at the beginning, Roman Candle changed my life🥰
The big songs are good too.
Hope you're still a fan!
Figure 8 changed my life. Beautiful album
He sings Independence Day like an angel, pitch perfect. Love you, Elliott.
Everything Means Nothing To Me was amazing in this set.
That drummer is a beast
Sometimes I hear Elliot singing in my head and I search for the song. Im not sure it exsists but I still try to find it.
What I love about this performance, most of all, is that you see all the flaws, bungles, and how raw it is, and you love every second of it, because it's beautiful and passionate, and while none of them are infallible virtuosos, Elliott's passion and songwriting just brings it all to life, and they all cared about what they were doing, as an art form, and you can't fake that shit.
his drummer is on point...they all are
Yessy Face dpfpfpvkclfpfpfp
Couldn't imagine a better backing band for him.the 3 of them are all so fucking talented.
Scott McPherson is the drummer. Super great human!! Check out his company Tackle Instrument Supply.
He had a fucking amazing three guys backing him here....
Reminds me of young Leonard Cohen anyhow...
His smile is so beautiful
one of my biggest regrets in life, is never seeing Elliot live, i know when musicians die too soon, people often make hyperbolic statements, but the guy truly was always head and shoulders above his contemporaries imo, miss you Elliot
the only songwriter on par with elliott at the time was (imo) mark linkous aka sparklehorse. the good one's always leave too soon, but stay in our hearts forever.

this is one of the best live concerts of all time.
Wow! I'm thrilled by the way he talks with the public at 41:32 and he is so happy and in the mood, and then out of nowhere he starts playing "Can't make a sound", and get serious and dark in some way. He really felt what he sang, and that's what gets me the most.
I agree that Elliott's music was so deep and emotional, but come on, he just said 'arigato' it's not the ending scene of Titanic. Let's just stop psychoanalyzing every single breath he takes.
@@hazelhumor You've missed my point. I was talking about the mood switch at the beginning of the song, not about what he said.
Like him Elliott's band is just incredible. It just gave him so more room to express himself musically. His solo shows just never really panned out. Elliott with a full band is just bad ass. Wouldn't you love to be at this concert. Elliott was a hell of guitar player. I think this is overlooked sometimes. RIP Elliott we still miss you.

I initially wrote 'Elliott is a genius' and having to amend that phrase is heartbreaking.

A tender poet, thanks for your wonderful music. Forever.
I love that sign at the front of the audience that says "WHAT A BEAUTIFUL VOICE". Elliott Smith was one of a kind and a true musician who knew exactly what sound he wanted to make and knew what type of musicians he needed to surround himself with. The bass player is great and helps reproduce the sound of Elliott's music in studio form with his backing vocals. The keyboard player is amazing especially on songs like Son of Sam and Everything Means Nothing To Me. And the drummer is very inventive and knew how to compliment the rest of the instruments while still keeping it simple.
Then, there's Elliott who even 20 years after his death has never ceased to amaze.
Sam Coomes also on keyboards (on "Color Bars').
Who was his keyboard player? All these musicians are so great. I'm blown away.
Not sure if you found out or not but his name is Aaron embry

best concert ever . i just wanted to listen to a few songs but ive just been sitting here entranced listening loud on my speaker 😂
his voice here reminds me of how it sounded on roman candle, kinda raspy and low. his head voice is beautiful but i really like when he'd sing in his chest voice. he also looks really good here... the beard suits him >< plus he seems a lot more confident than he does at shows where he'd only play with his guitar. playing electric guitar on stage with a band does seem very thrilling so i can see why lol
This is absolutely fantastic. Thanks so much for sharing this, anything new with Elliott makes the world a slightly better place.
