Yeah it's the reason I keep coming back to it. It probably was meant to be and got cut. I do agree with the decision to not put this on figure 8, if that's really what happened
when listening to the album i always jump on youtube after "in the lost and found" to listen to this. when stupidity tries comes after this, it's actual perfection
This song will be played at my funeral - I can't comprehend how this was never released, even posthumously - it's up there in the top 10 of his best work IMO
Elliott Smith is a great example of how you don't need to be complex or over the top to make fantastic songs. He had such a good grasp on conveying emotion in its purest form. His art and legacy will stand the test of time as a result.
I think even his most simple stuff is very complex, especially the guitar parts. He was a master of being complex without sounding like it. He doesn't have many songs that could be played by people with minimal instrument experience.
Like how can anyone ever top Elliott man? I seriously think he’s gotta be the best musician to ever live. He really just is so much better than everyone lol, everything he made was beautiful man.
Subjective skills and arbitrary judgement is the chaos which makes music freedom. People think my art is dog shit.. but every once in awhile someone gets it.. Alex G made a fantastic diy catalogue at a younger age than Elliotts Early Crow recordings like, a”Three” or “mailman thinks me dumb. Lookup Alex G Skin cells or just Alex G unreleased if this is new info to you. Maybe you might like it.
I feel the same way. Started listening to him when I was 15 and I remember having a realization a few years ago that nothing I listen to will ever match what his music does for me. Many years later and I feel the same way. There are a lot of musicians I love, but Elliott is on his own plane with his songwriting alone.
Two of my favourite Elliott Smith songs ever and neither got an official release. Kind of tragic:( but as I've always said, it's a testament to how good of a songwriter he was that gems like these could even be thought of as incomplete or unworthy of release.

Ikr? I am always left in awe of every song...Of course I favour some songs more than others, but, IMO he can't write a bad song. He's so talented that it's unbelievable.
God what a glorious song. His voice is so intimate, like he’s whispering in your ear. Comforting and sensual at once. There’s so much sensuality in his music and his voice. It’s really strong in this song. So beautiful. He’s been saving me during this covid insanity and the profound loneliness that’s come with it. Then again he’s been saving me for over twenty years. RIP divine Elliott 🙏
I heard that intro and i went wait a minute.. is this a jo-WHAT THE HELL. I went as far as 1.50 completely slack jawed. I closed my mouth only cause it was getting tired. I'm literally shaking. HOW DID I NEVER HEAR THIS. Then again, I wish I could go back to 3 minutes ago so I could live that momet again. Damn.
Im standing in my English garden swaying to this song of such beauty and disonnance... Elliott was a master of conveying emotions but, like many of us, looks like he couldn't deal with them.Im the same.Miss you,man
+Patrick James Staples yeah It's weird, maybe it was the repetitiveness of it? Elliott hated Pitesleh in the end because of it's simplicity. For me it's trance inducing, it's one of my favourite songs of all time. I can put it on repeat and never get tired of it.
+Patrick James Staples Agreed. Although the loop is far more complex than it sounds, its rotates in 6 bars of 4/4 and has a bunch of layers to it. I made a close replica on a loop station using reverse reverb but couldn't quite get the exact sound. Its really quite amazing that he could make such a conplex song sound and have it sound so simple to the listener.
He often had to decide between a lot of different songs to put on his albums because of how prolific of a writer he was, and he always second guessed his decisions so that could maybe be why.

LemonLord01 addendum to the above. It was never proved indubitably that he did/didn't kill himself. The case was botched. All that is known is that the inquest revealed wounds caused without hesitation; this did not correlate with "conventional" suicide through stabbing (the wounds are normally created hesitantly as the subject struggles to commit themselves to their actions)... Not that it really matters any more I suppose; a talented musician is dead and the world is poorer for it. :(
+Daniel Demarse It was never declared suicide. the case is still open. It was either Jennifer Chiba or someone she hired to do it if you ask me. In the very few cases of suicide that involved a person stabbing themselves in the heart, almost everyone of them took their shirt off before they did it. his shirt was on and they found defensive wounds. everyone wants to think it was a suicide because that fits in to the whole 'Elliott was a sad sap' complex that most people have. Elliott Smith did not kill himself and his murderer is out their starting fundraisers for suicide awareness.. fucking pathetic

Since then hardly a day goes by without a little bit of his music. Even read a couple of his biographies. I think future generations will look at him like we look at Beethoven, Mozart, Van Gogh, and Earnest Hemingway
Elliott's music tugs on the heart strings such that I'm feeling immense love and loss at the same time. It's overwhelming sometimes. But I love it and I don't want to stay away.
