a friend of mine killed himself about a month ago and I've been listening to nothing except Elliot Smith for the past month. Nothing else helps. I've listened to Elliott about 4000 times in the last 30 days. My friend's death has affected me so much because not only is it incredibly fucking sad that he killed himself right before graduating from high school, I'm incredibly suicidal myself and I've had to come face-to-face with the consequences my own suicide will have on everyone around me. It gives me some hope that Elliott was able to make it to 34. Hell, I didn't think I'd make it to 17 and my birthday is tomorrow. In any case, thank you Elliott, for helping me get through this shit and pouring yourself into your music and putting it out there. I'm sorry this world couldn't be somewhere comfortable for you. Wish I could have met you once, but you were alive before my time. I'm trying my best not to come meet you soon, wherever you are now.
strawberry flavoring hi I was in a very similar position to you when I was 16/17. I just want to say that even though it feels like a miracle to reach 17, you can do so much that you don’t even realise yet, life really can get better and the suicidal thoughts get easier to deal with. You can do this.

I was 4 when he died and I'm 16 now and I just want to go back and tell him how much of an impact on my life he was and tell him how much I appreciate him.
I was at this show. It was my last year at the University of Utah and I remember being so excited to see him live. It was a great show and brings back so many memories. Thank you for posting.
It’s pretty beatiful that the last song he played live was long long long by the beatles. He once said in an interview that the white album ”changed everything” and inspired him to be a songwriter.
That makes sense since I can hear a lot of The White Album's influence in "Figure 8" and "From A Basement On The Hill". Elliott took that inspiration and made something so wonderful from it.
Dude, you don’t need to apologize for the quality of the filming. You captured a piece of music history that means a lot for me and a lot of other people to see. THANK YOU!
Something about this video really emotionally gut punches me. The way his voice quivers and he stumbles and stutters through his sentences show how nervous he is, and yet, he’s still keeping a vast majority of the crowd engaged and listening. He’s so visually anxious and the way he smirks a little when the audience cheers for him breaks me. I love you elliott
Elliott Smith changed my life in many ways. Not in some grandiose or clichè way. Before Elliott, it was a steady diet of punk rock. He taught me how to be patient, tolerant, darker and appreciate punk rock even more because Elliott was as DIY as they get. I won't do him justice by some simi-drunken rant. Just know, I named my son proudly after him. I'm forever grateful for having heard him. There really wasn't anything like him prior, and his uniqueness is too difficult to replicate. In my humble opinion (i.e. Elliott would have wanted to hear it said that way), the best singer/songwriter there ever was. Thank you for posting.
Man, watching this is heartbreaking. He seems so much healthier, happier, more comfortable, etc. than he had in the prior few years. Such a fucking shame. Rest easy, Elliott. We miss you.
I love Smith's music... but pump the brakes on the whole "most creative artist" tag. Not even close. That said, happy you and I agree he was a deeply remarkable musician and songwriter.
I was at this show. I had seen him a few times before. It was evident that he was hurting and not his best self this night. It's been hard for me to go back and watch this because i prefer to remember him when his life seemed happier. Love all his music. He left us too soon. Still makes me sad almost two decades later.
@coryrobison5090, do you remember where he performed? I’m a student at the U right now and I just have to go visit this spot. I’d appreciate it so much!!
He seems like the shyest, nicest guy you'll ever meet, I've heard people say he didn't have a great voice or strong voice ,but that's part of the beauty of his music ,is almost as he's about to cry in every song, theres a vulnerability in his voice that is just beautiful and relatable, songs that come from the heart, amazing lyrics ,thank you Elliott wish I could've met you...
I remember walking into this concert when i was 16.... I ran into a friend and asked "Who is this?" he said "Elliott Smith", and then i stayed and watched. I had no idea he would be such a massive impact on my life. One of the only things I remember about this concert was how insecure and uneasy he was.... So sad. I wish I would have known his music better at this time.
what’s sad about it? it’s sad that he’s gone but everyone here was happy and that’s what’s important Elliott left his mark and will touch the hearts of millions forever now that’s a great thing
So sweet the crowd sang along for most of Waltz #2, especially "I'm never gonna know you now, but I'm going to love you anyhow". He must have known how adored he was.
I don’t get why people are arguing about how he sounds or how he is acting it doesn’t matter. At the end of the day, I know his music saved my life and I’m so grateful someone like him existed- I don’t think I would have made it out of active addiction without killing myself if I didn’t have his music. Thank you so much Elliott ❤️
It's difficult to watch Elliott sometimes. There are moments where I feel like I'm watching an open wound. Like many fans, I just wish I could've hugged him or talked to him, but I realize his feelings about himself would not have changed because some random fan thought they could make him feel better. I became a fan in '97, and he was the last artist I was truly excited about (I'm old 😊). I'll never forget watching him on The Oscars just completely transfixed by what felt like an alternate reality. Elliott performing in the same venue as Celine Dion?? 🤯😀 Thank you so much for uploading this. It's so bittersweet. I saw him around a year before this with a full band and he sounded great -- more confident than nearly any other of his performances I've seen. I listen to and play his music to this day. His music is truly timeless. Thank goodness we have plenty of it to listen to.
it’s so weird to think that me and elliott were not even ever alive at the same time, yet he inspires me everyday and plays a big part in my life. even though he’s not with us anymore he is still changing lives and making people smile. Rest easy. ✌️
something about seeing someone shortly before their death just gives me chills. not that it creeps me out its just that you know that their days are numbered, sends chills down my spine and makes my eyes water. a truly beautiful soul.
I have to completely agree, show someone needle in the hay from this set and they'll say it's a unsettling song now tell that same someone Elliott died a very short time after this concert? Instantly scarier
20 years. I still miss Elliott, terribly. My heart broke during Long, Long, Long - a perfect cover in my opinion. He looks happy, and with a sense of peace about him. I'm glad his final show was a good one, with a nice connection to the audience. Thank you for the gift of uploading to your channel. Love to Elliott in the other place. See you again someday. Cheers.
The musicians musician, no one strikes your core as raw as Mr. Elliott Smith. To me he surpassed his hero’s the Beatles and was the most important artist of the 90’s. No one comes close to his stripped back purity. Thank you Elliott Smith for being the talisman sound helping me through this shitty world. I hope your spirit regenerates past this planet and hits the next higher dimensional plane with such a vibration that your pure beauty and energy electrify and amplify the cosmos. May alien children know your talents in your new life and celebrate your artistry until you reach godhead and nothing means everything to you!!! An Infinity of blessings to you Xxxx Xxx
Bryan Sturgeon, I’m not even going to lower my vibe too much with a little random spat with a stranger about who is more talented. I offered my opinion, which would obviously get shouted down by some Beatles fan. After all they were great. But To call Elliott Smith a joker is just funny man, and he only wrote in A minor... wtf??? Your lack of knowledge on the subject has tickled me, and to insinuate that I haven’t heard much music well... it’s precisely that I have had my ear to the ground that I put Elliott next to the Beatles. Your cute kid like a little midget!!! now I know your a funny guy, ya make me smile Kiddo. Keep learning music kid... so much to know and so little time. Anyway back to the pond for you little tiddler. 🐟
MICHAEL NEWHAM, what a beautiful and fitting tribute to write about someone such as Elliott Smith. I have read so many Beatles comparisons about him and sure, it is there to a degree. Many such as myself, Generation X (I am a year younger than Elliott) got started in our love for music with the Beatles. I started collecting Beatles albums when I was 9. However, by the time I was 10-11, I had already ran the gamut with the Beatles and now looking back we see how short lived they really were. More than that, I don't like seeing the Beatles comparison for the simple fact they were a Tavistock project and the real Paul McCartney has been long dead since November of 1966 and the Sir Paul McCartney we know & see today is nothing more than the corporate product Paul McCartney. He is one of the highest level Freemasons out there. He is twice knighted by the impostor Queen and one only need look at footage of the Queen in the presence of Paul McCartney to see she is subservient to HIM. Here is a man who truly sold his soul to Lucifer. He paid his dues by losing Linda, the love of his life.
Danielle Marin Paul McCartney is a dumpster pumper and has most certainly sexually assaulted victims of human trafficking. Elliott Smith > the beatles Also, I’m glad to see you have your eyes open. Your comments in freemasonry and Tavistock are based.
dudes totally glowing with gods energy here my favorite show ever. heals my heart when im Down. if reincarnation is real I hope this dudes back and with a guitar in his hands.
Elliott sounded so amazing here. Really on top of his game, I think, considering how rough the last couple of years were for him... I'm so sad that he isn't here today. I hope that wherever his spirit is now, he is at peace.
Ardiberen It does sadden me a little to see so many negative comments on this video of all videos, with this being Elliott's final performance before his passing, but yeah, I'm not letting anyone get me down. Being rude won't stop me from enjoying Elliott's music. 🙂
This. Everybody always talks about his lyrics (great in their own right!) but very few people mention how crazy his guitar parts were, especially to play and sing at the same time!
21:45 ''I think it's kind of depressing'' he says, jokinly. Elliott was a genious that passed us by almost unnoticed. So were Bowie, Cash and John Lennon. They probably would have been satisfied having Elliotts level of exposure to the mainstream, too. It's just Elliott never got the chance to fully evolve out of his caccoon the way he intended. Big love to Elliott, where ever he may be.
Ill never get tired of watching this. Its like im sometimes look at elliott as if am himself sometimes .. , maybe more . ..at 50 and yet ...these songs transcended the 90s...i try to share hes output to everyone i know...but i guess we are the minority....not everyone can Hear ...them unless they have been aware of their own big ,little , trivial suffering ...and happiness.
It’s sad to hear his last song he performed live and actually “feel” that sadness. Despite not meeting him, this still feels like nostalgia from long ago.
A beautiful soul. The way he played long long long was such a perfect ending to such a beautiful life. The way he plays it perfectly encapsulates Elliott
Wow, thank you so much for uploading this, I'd always wished that I had recorded it. I arrived late (during Needle In The Hay) and always regretted it. It blows my goddam mind that people have anything negative to say about Elliott, I'm not exaggerating when I say that his music saved my life. For those that criticize Elliott, I hope you'll at least consider this bit of advice, which is something I'm working on myself and requires a measure of humility: Why shit on someones art? Even if it's objectively bad, or you just hate it, another human put themself into their creation and shared it with you. If something isn't for you, move on. How about doing something constructive, like promoting the things you do like, or better yet creating your own art. xoxo
How are people chatting away when Elliott is pouring out his soul I don't get it. I'd be in a trance watching Elliott. Just a thought! Rest easy Elliott we love you eternally from Ireland 🇮🇪🎙️🎵💚
Elliott was an excellent chordsmith and lyricist, but more meek than engaging on stage. I love his timid sounding vocal style but its not for the masses. It's great that you can enjoy him. I tried to sing his praises to friends for years but few became as fond of his music as I did. I'm OK with that. I'll always revisit his songs because they evoke very strong emotions. He was an incredible talent imo.
@keffinmckn3602 to be fair he's playing a solo set acoustic in front of what appears to be a large festival like crowd. There's videos of him with a full band in the same setting and it's received with rapturous applause. Context matters. Also he was probably either: recovering from substance abuse or in the throes of it during this performance which adds to the vulnerability of the performance. Either way I think he performed these songs almost perfectly. I watched this whole set and didn't feel unengaged once. Put Taylor Swift on a stage with a beat up acoustic for an hour plus I'd say she wouldn't fair much better.
@cityboyee There's no "appearance" of a crowd, but I can hear less than 50 people applauding after each song, so I'd disagree with you there. As far as the "rapturous" applause in the live settings with a band, I've seen those same videos, and you're being hyperbolic at best. Whether he's under the influence or in recovery is inconsequential to his timid demeanor. Also, I didn't say that listeners weren't engaged with Elliott but that he wasn't a very engaging performer. You know, not much of a showman or performer but an artist with incredible songs. Unfortunately, I also disagree that Taylor Swift wouldn't have a much larger crowd under her thumb armed with an acoustic guitar and microphone. She's a Mega star, and although I'm not a fan, I can see the difference. If Elliott Smith could come back for one more show, I'm sure he could fill any venue. He is more popular posthumously than when he was here.
Whether people were talking through the show or not, I think its important that in his last show he sounded good, looked engaged, and appeared a lot healthier than he had in a long time. I'm sure there were a at least a couple people in that audience that were moved by his performance
19 years today, since his final live show here, thank you for the person who recorded this I read in the comments you tried your best! The audio is fairly good for the audio equipment back then! Never got to see Elliott live, just turned 7 at the time of the last show Never got to meet you miss you Elliott
I wasn't even born when he was gone.. They say he committed suicide.. 2 knife stabbings in his chest.. He had been clean for 31 days, hadn't done drugs or drank. I'm missing someone I didn't even meet and I just found him today.
@@zz772he passed away exactly 6 days before I was born. It’s crazy that I was alive in a time when that was fresh news, cause it seems like it was so long ago. When I started listening to Elliott back in 2019 I thought he was alive, and when I found out he wasn’t my heart broke. It added a weird new context to his music that was hard to accept. I wonder what he would have done going forward. The music he would’ve made probably would have been incredible 😢
I was at this concert. I graduated from Utah the next May. I also remember the day Elliott passed. Total shock and sadness. Glad I got to see him even if a bunch of morons talked the entire concert.
The most authentic musician of its time. I think we should be grateful for the amount of content Elliott actually created... even with all his suffering he never stopped composing and that's really fascinating. For all the things he went through, he actually could have gone very sooner.
He’s really good here and plays, what I consider, all the golden songs. Doesn’t forget much more than where the capo needs to go and when he does he still sings pretty well till he realizes that it’s the wrong key. Also seems to look younger than most appearances prior to this the past couple years.
That's absolutely wonderful!!! I can't thank you enough... I am so very happy to watch it! He looked happy, didn't he? He was absolutely amazing! I still miss / still love him so much and I will never ever forget him. I can't forget that he was such a nice man when he came and did some gigs in Japan... Whatever people said, he is my hero!
i’m so proud of you, elliott. you got clean, you fought for happiness, but the end may have just been inevitable. in the words of don mclean, “this world was never meant for one as beautiful as you.”
Vincent is a Don McLean song from 1971 about the artist Vincent van gogh. But I think personally that it can be translated to be a song about any artist, sketcher, painter, singer, writer ecs. I hoped this helped!😁
It’s beautiful to see that I am not the only one looking for him, we all still miss him so much. 🙏🏻 He left a void behind...such a pity. So young and so delicate. We miss you Elliott.

Thank you so much for uploading this! You're an absolute hero! And don't apologise for the quality, I think it might even be better than a perfect recording... It's perfectly imperfect; human and strangely beautiful, much like the songs, much like the artist.
Elliott helped me feel loved when I couldn’t love myself. His music is a huge part of why I’m still alive today, and I’m sure I’m not alone in that. Yes I wish he lived a full healthy life, one so that I could’ve gotten a chance to see him play live and two so that he could’ve created more music. But luckily he created a massive amount of music before his untimely death. And his death was not in vain, through sharing his music he has saved countless lives. Thank you for recording this, for those of us who never got a chance to see him play or experience his personality it’s a blessing that there are recording of him. Such a beautiful soul, such a way with melodies, such a humble personality to go along with his music. Thank you lord for creating such a beautiful person and thank you to everyone who convinced Elliott to share his music and play shows and thank you to everyone who loves Elliott, if only he knew how much he mattered to some of us.
So glad you found this and uploaded it. He looks very happy here and back to his old form. We can only imagine what albums he could have created in the last 12 years. Greatly miss his remarkable song writing and talent.

strawberry flavoring hi I was in a very similar position to you when I was 16/17. I just want to say that even though it feels like a miracle to reach 17, you can do so much that you don’t even realise yet, life really can get better and the suicidal thoughts get easier to deal with. You can do this.
Stay strong man, better days are on the way. Till then Elliott will soothe you up.
I lost my best friend to Cancer and very suddenly it has fucked me up fellow badmate aswell we've been playing 25 years many ups and downs you have true love to look forward whatever your interests are go for it your obviously a cool person you like elliott theres an awesome beginning.

I was hospitalized for suicidality, my father in law killed himself, and I'm back living with my, uh, less than stellar family. BUT for the first time in my life im getting psychiatric treatment and therapy so i feel much better than i have in a long time.

@redvolvo1981, can you please let me know where he performed? I am a student at the U right now and I just have to go visit this spot.
I love you elliott
fancy seeing you here
Still punching myself for not going. My friends asked me to go, but I just said, “Nah. Maybe next time.”
Ouch
only problem is, There is NO next time. Now in theatres april the 5th
Never forget how easily life can be ended.
David Roberts you likely wouldn’t be able to hear him because of all the talking douchebags.
Never make that mistake again I bet. Gotta live life.
Thank you for posting.

beautifully written.
Met my future wife at that show. Weird feelings tied up in that night
this is the most beautiful thing I’ve ever heard
man I wish he could've learned that. I'm sure it would've meant a lot
Man, watching this is heartbreaking. He seems so much healthier, happier, more comfortable, etc. than he had in the prior few years. Such a fucking shame. Rest easy, Elliott. We miss you.
elliott made my life so much better
His performances closest to the end of his days were his rawest, edgiest, and most beautiful. Most creative artist of his generation
He always sounded so good. What a goddamn shame. We lost a lot when he passed.
I love Smith's music... but pump the brakes on the whole "most creative artist" tag. Not even close. That said, happy you and I agree he was a deeply remarkable musician and songwriter.
Watching this end is like waving goodbye to a dear friend for the last time
I was at this show. I had seen him a few times before. It was evident that he was hurting and not his best self this night. It's been hard for me to go back and watch this because i prefer to remember him when his life seemed happier. Love all his music. He left us too soon. Still makes me sad almost two decades later.
Yeah he seems very uncomfortable. :( and looks like he is in pain. I miss him. The best people often suffer the most.
So lucky to have seen him multiple times... I would give every dollar i have just to sit front row at one of this shows.
So sad.
I wish I would have known his music better at this time.
you're lucky ;)
@bradkasteler9505, hey do you know where he performed??? I’m a student at the U right now and I really want to go visit this spot. Thank you!!
I am not here to say how he looks or feels...I just know he made me feel...and that's all I need..
Thank you, Elliott
i almost cried at the end, watching him smile as he finishes the final song while everyone cheers for him is so fucking sad. rip elliott
what’s sad about it?
it’s sad that he’s gone but everyone here was happy and that’s what’s important
Elliott left his mark and will touch the hearts of millions forever now that’s a great thing
@@AaronMatthews amen
he's brilliant at combining beautiful beatlesque melodies with the most downright depths of despair in his lyrics.
His final concert, in my hometown, on my birthday. Trippy. We love you and we miss you, Elliott.
"Never gonna know you now, but I'm gonna love you anyhow"
So sweet the crowd sang along for most of Waltz #2, especially "I'm never gonna know you now, but I'm going to love you anyhow". He must have known how adored he was.
I don’t get why people are arguing about how he sounds or how he is acting it doesn’t matter. At the end of the day, I know his music saved my life and I’m so grateful someone like him existed- I don’t think I would have made it out of active addiction without killing myself if I didn’t have his music. Thank you so much Elliott ❤️
lol
You’re probably a lot of fun at parties
He's keeping me going too man :)
Yes! Great comment!
Thank you so much for uploading this.
Rest easy. ✌️
I would do absolutely anything to be able to go back and see him live
something about seeing someone shortly before their death just gives me chills. not that it creeps me out its just that you know that their days are numbered, sends chills down my spine and makes my eyes water. a truly beautiful soul.
I have to completely agree, show someone needle in the hay from this set and they'll say it's a unsettling song now tell that same someone Elliott died a very short time after this concert? Instantly scarier
I can't believe he's asking what the crowd wants. To hear. He's so amazing
He did this in a lot of shows that I've watched here. He was the sweetest :(
Elliott Smith is and was and will always be my favorite artist ever.

More than that, I don't like seeing the Beatles comparison for the simple fact they were a Tavistock project and the real Paul McCartney has been long dead since November of 1966 and
the Sir Paul McCartney we know & see today is nothing more than the corporate product Paul McCartney.
Danielle Marin
Paul McCartney is a dumpster pumper and has most certainly sexually assaulted victims of human trafficking.
Elliott Smith > the beatles
Also, I’m glad to see you have your eyes open. Your comments in freemasonry and Tavistock are based.

This. Everybody always talks about his lyrics (great in their own right!) but very few people mention how crazy his guitar parts were, especially to play and sing at the same time!
I'm 18 so I was obviously very young when he died. It breaks my heart that I'll never get to hear him live. Such a beautiful soul.
Berendjen H. Same with me... I'm 20, and I feel very sad that I was very little when we died :(
21:45 ''I think it's kind of depressing'' he says, jokinly.
Rest in peace darling

Ill never get tired of watching this. Its like im sometimes look at elliott as if am himself sometimes .. , maybe more . ..at 50 and yet ...these songs transcended the 90s...i try to share hes output to everyone i know...but i guess we are the minority....not everyone can Hear ...them unless they have been aware of their own big ,little , trivial suffering ...and happiness.
I don’t even care how bad this filming is, thank you for doing it and uploading it. I was there and this is so nostalgic for me
Elliott has meant so much to me it’s unreal. God, he was a fkn angel. Elliott, u are missed, u are loved.
This man has my whole heart.
It’s sad to hear his last song he performed live and actually “feel” that sadness. Despite not meeting him, this still feels like nostalgia from long ago.
I feel so happy when he starts playing a song and people on the crowd screams, recognizing the song... He was so talented, and we miss him so much.
Right! So incredibly rude.
I'm sure there were a at least a couple people in that audience that were moved by his performance
funny how I long and miss someone I’ve never met so so much everyday , heck I wasn’t even born then . Ly always Elliot

He’s really good here and plays, what I consider, all the golden songs. "Vincent" really matches Elliott Smith perfectly. Besides the suicide part. Someone should make a music video tribute with that song.
