Love this! One day I hope to raise some worms here. I think I'd be limited to warm months only, i've never heard of continuing to raise them during the winter months in MI. Thanks for sharing your set up. This will give me some food for thought.
It's a great set up to have as long as you can get over the heebie-jeebies!! Honestly, that's my biggest hurdle!! I'll keep you posted and look forward to following you on your journey!!
LoL I just loved your commentary ... and loved you telling the worms off :-) I so much enjoyed that video lol ... considering it's a brand new bin with new bedding I think the bin is doing great - one of the issues with all plastic bins and lids is it encourages moisture on the sides and lids on the inside and that makes it easy for the worms to move around and go exploring. Worms shed moisture if they move across dry surfaces and they'll die if they dry out. So these kind of bins just naturally make it easy for them to move around inside and explore. There's nothing wrong, and over time they'll settle but it's not unusual and I think you'll continue to find some every now and then even when the bin is well established. Feeding little and often is the way to go and blending up the food like you have is perfect for this kind of bin. The worms are able to process it much faster. It does take time for the worms to settle so don't worry about anything for a few weeks at least while they're getting used to their new home and surroundings :) Really looking forward to the updates :)
Londonworms, thank you so much for the info it really helped to calm my nerves. I had to watch the video again, I couldn’t believe I was talking to them. What did I expect them to do, behave and/or respond? LOL!! Thanks again for watching!!
I missed this one for some reason. You are a RIOT! I'm glad you figured it out eventually. All will be well soon enough. Your worries and your fears will be allayed and you will have delicious worm castings to feed your vegetables. Be blessed!
"Worm Castings!!! Worm Castings!!" That's what I say to myself every time I have to face the bin. I wish I could say that it's getting easier but that's not true.. I'm not giving up!! Thanks for stopping by and stay well, Deborah!!
You are so funny!! I though you were going to throw the lid across the room! They were just coming up to say thanks for the food, lol!! How are they doing now?
LOL!! It took all I could not to scream and run the opposite direction!!! They are doing fine, surprisingly!! I'll be making a update vid soon. Stay well!!
The only thing I know about worms is how to use for fish bait. Never tried to grow them...lol So it will be a learning channel for me. Good video. I am from Small RUclips Homestead FB page and I have subbed your channel
LMAO you don't like worms lol. I have huge ones in my yard they are often over a foot long I pick them up and move them to the side when working the ground so I don't kill them. in my worm bin though I have red wigglers like yours. you are a great worm mom you even ground up their food, I just throw in kitchen scraps they have to chew it up themselves. I will caution you, you bought way more worms than I did when I started. no problem with that at all. but they will eat fast. I bought a quarter pound of worms and they ate through things voraciously lol and multiplied like bunnies. don't be afraid to shred paper or throw in cardboard either they love that stuff they eat it very fast. I generally shred my mail that is paper based (no plastic of course). I'd caution you against the holes in the top unless you leave that light on 24/7 because they will crawl out of there as i'm sure you figured out when you saw them on the top of the tote. mine do that all the time and there are hundreds of them up top when I open it sometimes. probably a ph change they'll adjust, its common to my knowledge and what I've experienced myself. Don't worry they will adjust, you will kill some dont worry they mate. I'd put a little more food in there as well you have a lot of worms. to give you an idea I put about 4lbs in the first time i fed mine...now that was probably overkill but it was just about all broken down in 2 weeks, and i'd throw in kitchen scraps little by little every day. hope that helps and I think over time you will get over being freaked out by them, they are slimy but at least they don't bite lol. honestly most bugs freak me out so I know the feeling! Wish you well you'll do fine. Keep us updated!!!
DevaJones03, I saw a wiggly thumb of a worm in one of your videos and darn near screamed!! ROFL!! Bugs freak me out as well and I'm sure I'll be recording myself doing something outside and I'm going to scream like a little girl!!! Thanks for the information and the vote of confidence I really appreciate it, truly. I will keep you posted, for sure!!

Maybe you have to add something to the peat moss? When I have worms I just use worm bedding.
Worm bedding is really cheap in my area. I'll look into it, thanks for the recommendation!!!
I have not tried worms. Good luck with yours. Best wishes Bob.
Thanks, I need it!
Have a great evening. Best wishes Bob.
