Linoc10 Indeed we do. We need a Kaiser, we need to destroy this feeble "Federal Republic" and come back to what we always were, the Deutsches Kaiserreich
Luxembourgish, or Lëtzebuergesch, is the native language of Luxembourgers. Foreigners often tell me it sounds like Dutch but softer. It has kept much of the German grammar and syntax and a lot of its words can be traced back to either German or French.
Its stupid from him pretending Its a dialect. Im German and I can Tell you Most Germans dont even Understand Swiss ppl Austrians and Not even Bavarian... Luxembourgish is even harder
Bass of Nation And here are some other very “useful” phrases in luxembourgish is for all Foreign/American people: “Kuff d’Schmull” and “Lëck mech am Arsch” 😂😂
To the intelligebility from German: I was in Luxemburg with two friends once. My father comes from the Eifel, where the dialect is very similar, so I could understand Luxembourgish without problems. However, my friend from Hannover didn't quite get everything, and my friend from Saxonia (the other end of Germany, geographically and language-wise) couldn't even guess what they were saying ... so, it depends on the region of Germany, I guess
How long were you there? I find after listening to people talk for a while I'll get used to the dialect and start understanding a lot more. Swiss German for example. Also pretty sure its Saxony not Saxonia.
i live right next to luxembourg in germany and i gotta say it’s one of my fav countries, like it’s so calm and so many small villages and fields, it’s absolutely beautiful
Historically, Italians and Portuguese guest workers were called to Luxembourg to work in the mines as Luxembourg was BIG on the steel industry. (since they were Catholics like Luxembourg, it was easier to get them into the society culturally.) The rest is more or less Luxembourg being filthy rich and therefore very attractive for immigrants
I'm Portuguese living in Luxembourg, so I speak 5 languages, which is very usual in our country :) you pronounced most of the Luxembourgish words wrong haha aaaand I can guarantee you that Luxembourgish and German are two different languages ! :b And there are so many more Luxembourgish dishes which look and taste better than the ones you showed lol But I'm very glad that there are actually some people around the world that know about our tiny country :)
Firwat = Für was = Warum: makes perfect sense from a German perspective. In many southwestern German dialects, you use this as well. Same with Klinik, which is just a different word for Krankenhaus/hospital.
I know you're joking, but actually the sandstone forest region in west of Luxembourg is often called little switzerland because of its rugged terrain and all the little caves and cliffs it encompasses.
Oh Barby, you and your April Fools' episodes! Who would believe there is a tiny country between Germany and France full of castles that has a freaking duke, is inhibited by Portuguese people and uses a brighter version of the Dutch flag? Also, you're a month late for April Fools', dude! :P
I do not live in Luxembourg nor have I had the chance to visit it but it is part of my family heritage, and I have known about it for quite awhile so when I say "Yes it does exist" Barby is not B.Sing you. Try using your head once in awhile and look things up before putting some dum ass comment on.

Moustiqueneige4 Alsatian, a southern German dialect influenced over time by French. It is closely related to the Alemannic German dialects spoken in the adjacent border regions of Germany and Switzerland.
It is not a german influence. Quite a unique culture. The percentage of native alsatian (not german) speakers is very low actually, and only elderly people speak it.
Luxembourg: Hey Netherlands can I please copy your flag?? Netherlands: Please change it a bit to make it look less obvious Luxembourg: *changes dark blue to light blue* Netherlands:*facepalm*
Actually, the origin of the Russian flag is possibly connected to the Dutch tricolor. The Netherlands has exerted influence on places that you would never expect, even though no one recognizes these influences as Dutch anymore.
The european parlement is actually in Strabourg FRANCE. it is some time a joke for french people to tell the alsacian are still german but nope we joined back with France one last time aftert WWII.
yeah but I am not complaining about it, but as I know that Barbs does correct the mistakes in flag friday it is usefull to mention it. I also have to admit that hearing "my city" being mentioned and place on the wrong side of the border hurts my pride a little bit ^^
The reason of the Portuguese people in Luxembourg: From the 60’s on Luxembourg started major infrastructure projects and needed the builders to litterally build the whole country to the new era. Due to the high unemployment and poor economic situation under Salazar’s rule, Luxembourg welcomed the Portuguese people and offered them work. Portuguese immigrants saw quickly that the Luxembourg was better and prosperous country to raise a family than Portugal, so they stayed, eventhough the infrastructure projects were finished. Also, Luxembourg has a highest minimum wage in Europe. You can’t pay less than 2000€ (gross) per month for an employee.
That's true but you forgot to mention the heraldic connection from 10th generation back to Michael I of Portugal. Also, Robert I, Duke of Parma, 1884 to Infanta Maria Antonia of Portugal, daughter of the deposed King Miguel I of Portugal and his wife, Adelaide of Löwenstein-Wertheim-Rosenberg. Maria Antonia was his second cousin once removed, as her paternal grandmother (Charlotte of Spain) and Robert's paternal great-grandmother (Maria Luisa of Spain) were siblings, both children of Charles IV of Spain and Maria Luisa of Parma. She bore him another 12 children, among others was Prince Felix, who married Grand Duchess Charlotte of Luxembourg, his first cousin (their mothers were sisters, and had issue, including Jean - Grand Duke of Luxembourg, who's funeral held today 4.5.2019. His grandmother was Infanta Marie Anne of Portugal (Portuguese: Maria Ana; 13 July 1861 - 31 July 1942) was Grand Duchess of Luxembourg as the wife of Grand Duke Guillaume IV and the country's regent in the name of their daughter, Grand Duchess Marie-Adélaïde. She was a member of the House of Braganza.
Dave MustaneTheKing I really doubt that the heraldic connection, backing centuries in time of the two countries, were in the minds of the unemployed Portuguese people when they were searching for jobs around Europe. It’s more of a pleasant coincident that they and Luxembourg found each other. Nice detail though, what you wrote.

Not much history before the 20thC? The fortress of Luxembourg City was one of the most strategically desirable positions in all of Europe from around 1200-1867, and was the source of a dynasty of Holy Roman Emperors (see John the Blind, King of Bohemia, Duke of Luxembourg, HRE).
Yes that's why every empire in europe wanted us. Not even that fact, also the fact that because of our fortress, there was many dispute between the empires, and this could bring to war... So the big empires decided to make the fortress useless...
Prettt sure they whould call german wallonia. The german deparment state of luxemburg if it remain part of it. through the second weltkrieg. Considering the german population in the area and all
Actually Luxembourgish is an official language and can be used in politics, although our formal language is french. A lot of people speak 5 languages not 5, because they are refugees from portugal or former jugoslavia. There also a lot of italian people who came here during the steel industry boom. The lived mainly in the south but none of them speak the language because they came here 4 generations ago
Luxembourgish is an official language but if u try and speak luxembourgish in front of a court of justice for example, ull be reminded immediately to speak french or English.
I speak both German and French and have been to Luxembourg a few times. To me, the language there sounds like a drunk Frenchman who is trying to speak German...
EvilTaco Hahaha no it's just funny. I'm from Germany and of course German is my native language , but when I hear dutch I also say that it sounds like drunken German, and dutchies also think the same about German.
Daan Made in Holland Actually dutchies that I spoke too said it to me , it's from them that I got this. And dutchies are as a small country also dead to us , we beat you in everything lol
I actually had a classmate in my 10th grade economics class in high school that was actually from Luxembourg. I didn’t even know that she was from Luxembourg until she mentioned it to my economics teacher in class one day. My teacher then asked her if she could speak any of the languages that are spoken there, and sure enough, she was able to speak English, German, French, and Luxembourgish quite well.

The small state of Luxembourg is a charming reminder of how Europe used to be. Plague victims crawl elegantly down its dung filled streets greasing the way with puss from their buboes, while at least two children a week are burned as the devil in the handsome market square. The town boasts two taverns, one humorous dwarf and a shop that sells little things made of straw.
I don't think Luxembourg or Andorra drink alcohol like crazy. They simply sell it a lot to outsiders, especially French, who buy it there simply because it's much cheaper.
Enric yeah same with gas and cigarettes. All the French, Germans and Belgians commuting to Luxembourg everyday also buy those products here since they're cheaper
Maite J. Nah it really are the foreigneirs, we have extreme low taxes on alcohol and cigarets and when you live on the border, as I do, every third person buying those things isnt luxembourgish
Krankenhaus is a hospital, whereas Klinik refers to a clinic rather than to a hospital. The Luxembourgisch word for Hospital would be Spidol. And IKEA’s HQ is in Leiden, Netherlands.
quadro beam: Well of course, but doesn’t he do like a recap every Friday after his new episode to correct minor details? I’m not judging or anything. Just pointing it out. Also cuz I literally couldn’t find anything about a possible Ikea HQ in Luxembourg

05:47 interestingly that is not unique to Luxembourg at all. In fact it is most famously found in Switzerland and other alpine areas around Christmas time and they are called Grittibanz
we actually have in itself a large variety of names for it, haha. in some parts we call it "Grittibänz", in others it‘s called "Grättimaa", so it depends.
Respect Barbs! You did a very good job at researching. I didn't expect you to mention the alcohol, gas and coffee shopping travels to Luxembourg :D There are literally whole villages which seem to be consisting completely out of gas stations. Especially next to the border to Germany :D
You didn't say anything in history about the House of Luxembourg, which members were elected as Holy Roman Emperors and Kings of Bohemia and Hungary in middle-ages.
And nothing said about the Netherlands, even though the Dutch King was also Grand Duke of Luxemburg until Queen Wilhelmina, because Luxemburg didn't have a law permitting Grand Duchesses to rule without a Grand Duke, so the Luxemburgish crown went to another branch of the family of Nassau. Edit: Spelling error fixed.
Luxembourg is like when you draw the flag of the Netherlands and dont have dark blue so instead you draw it with baby blue and evreyone thinks you drew the flag of Luxembourg
The Dutch house of Orange Nassau (A brand of the German house of Nassau) ruled Luxembourg for ~100 years. Luxembourg was part of the kingdom of the Netherlands.
@@mcj2219 hmhm wrong lol.... the king of the netherlands didnt have any political power in luxembourg but was only seen as their duke. Luxembourg was an autonomous state of the kingdom of the netherlands so it made it’s decisions itself but was under the protection of the netherlands, as well as of the prussians
This is really interesting. And you nailed it with the "not a German dialect". FYI, you'd be hard pressed to find a native who speaks "only three" languages. As there are so many foreigners, they'll have a Spanish mum and Italian dad, for example, so will speak these, too. And all seem to be super fluent in English, too!

Luxembourgish, or Lëtzebuergesch, is the native language of Luxembourgers. Foreigners often tell me it sounds like Dutch but softer. It has kept much of the German grammar and syntax and a lot of its words can be traced back to either German or French.
Yes it is a mixe of German and French and sounds sometimes a little bit like a soft version of Dutch

7:53 is literally the national motto of Luxembourg.
so true
Yep if you are from Rheinland Pfalz for example you can understand luxembourgish.
Living in the northeast side of Belgium, at the Dutch border and about 10 km from Germany I can easily understand Luxembourgish.
Err possible. We were there for a week and it got better as time went on, but our friend from Saxony still had the most problems

maybe because Portugal is a poorer euro state with the crisis
Majority of portugueses work in construction. And because our minimum wage is 1,998.59€ they can send a lot of money home.

Yes straussburg was apart of France since the end of ww1 except when. Nazi Germany took it. Before WW1 the german empire had it.
Its still a german influenced region whith a high percentage of native german speakers
No. People in Alsace speak both alsatian and french but not german.
Netherlands: Please change it a bit to make it look less obvious
Luxembourg: *changes dark blue to light blue*
Netherlands:*facepalm*
Aditya Rao Actually before the Independence Luxembourg was part of the Netherlands and so you can guess why the similar flag.
IK but i think they are a bit too similar
Our flag (Germany) is also rotated and switched compared with the Belgian one.
By the way : the Russian flag looks also similar to the dutch flag
Actually the russian flag does a bit
Actually, the origin of the Russian flag is possibly connected to the Dutch tricolor. The Netherlands has exerted influence on places that you would never expect, even though no one recognizes these influences as Dutch anymore.

yeah but I am not complaining about it, but as I know that Barbs does correct the mistakes in flag friday it is usefull to mention it. I also have to admit that hearing "my city" being mentioned and place on the wrong side of the border hurts my pride a little bit ^^
The reason of the Portuguese people in Luxembourg:
From the 60’s on Luxembourg started major infrastructure projects and needed the builders to litterally build the whole country to the new era.
Dave MustaneTheKing
I really doubt that the heraldic connection, backing centuries in time of the two countries, were in the minds of the unemployed Portuguese people when they were searching for jobs around Europe.

John the Blind was Count of Luxembourg, not Duke, and he never was Holy Roman Emperor.
Oh you're right, his son was HRE but not him. My mistake.
Yeah, John is famous for being the best fighter/tactician for the French at Crecy despite being blind which is a rather remarkable feat.
Charles IV Holy Roman Emperor is my favourite one. In czech we call him father of the czech nation.
Yes that's why every empire in europe wanted us. Not even that fact, also the fact that because of our fortress, there was many dispute between the empires, and this could bring to war... So the big empires decided to make the fortress useless...
but WHY ARE THERE SO MANY PORTUGEUSE???

Considering the german population in the area and all
Actually Luxembourgish is an official language and can be used in politics, although our formal language is french. A lot of people speak 5 languages not 5, because they are refugees from portugal or former jugoslavia. There also a lot of italian people who came here during the steel industry boom. The lived mainly in the south but none of them speak the language because they came here 4 generations ago
Luxembourgish is an official language but if u try and speak luxembourgish in front of a court of justice for example, ull be reminded immediately to speak french or English.

Exnem I’m from there and I can 100% confirm.

They simply sell it a lot to outsiders, especially French, who buy it there simply because it's much cheaper.
Enric yeah same with gas and cigarettes. All the French, Germans and Belgians commuting to Luxembourg everyday also buy those products here since they're cheaper
