In fact all Graet Dukes were absolute monarchs and in correspondence with German Order or Holy Roman Empire titled themselves Koenig or Rex, and were refered as such by second party. Formally only one - Mindaugas received the crown from Pope.
Honestly, I’ve seen a lot of videos trying to inform people about my country Lithuania and usually I see a lot of weird and false claims but this video has done a very good job! Really, it might be one of the best ones yet; sure there were like 1,2 mistakes but all in all very informative! Good job!!! :))
Gott aclear some things: 1. Nobody ever thought about The hill of crosses as creepy. Its a christian monument started long time ago, later serving as a symbol of resistence against russia (tzar and soviet), it was desroyed several times but after each time it grew back even bigger. 2. Crosses are our national monument. In the 18-20th century, many crossroads, and houses had their own cross. They were being made from carved wood or metal. It served as a place of meditation or prayer for those who could not attend the church or for other reasons. These crosses have their own stylized curves and carvings, which closely relate to the paganism (documented in books). My grandfather, a professional blacksmith used to make those in his free time. (this tradition was had poland as well i think) 3. The KGB bunkers and interogation experiences are small local businesses, not something "big" that everybody knows about. 4. If there is anything creepy about lithuania at all, its the politics and inherited public pesimism. After the destruction of soviet union, the former communists took control of the government which resulted in kind of significant lagging in development and essential reforms. Lots of money were stolen by those people, and remanants of the party are still leeching. (thanks to active a few active people (tapinas, maldeikiene, etc.) investigational journalism and ballzy politicians crack down the money leechers and corrupted ones. 5. Bogs and swamps are not "creepy" and there are not too many of them. There are only about 5 decently sized marshes, which are protected and can only be accessed by a wooden footpath. Once a year a number people are issued permissions to harvest the marsh. There are tons berries and mushrooms. Ive heard my uncle tell a story where he used to carry 80kg bag of pristine mushrooms back home. (yes, forest goods were essential to survival (mostly winter) about 30-40 years back, now these goods are still very sought after.)
lncubus99, This needed to be said, hill of crosses isn't creepy to the locals at all. Also no Lithuanian or Latvian thinks of our countries as creepy, sisters - yes, but creepy - naaah. Other points you mentioned were really good too! Ačiū!
I imagine the number of marshes is quite high but you're used to them so you just don't notice or consider them or think it's normal. I live in the marshiest area in my country and I would have never considered it if I wasn't told by geographers, I just thought it was normal. I once read that back in the middle ages, in the Baltic people would go to war in winter, despite the harsh northern winters, because at least you could move troops on the frozen land, whereas in summer it was really hard to move armies through the country because of all the marshy lands.
@@LifeofJonnyy our past is quite hard and dark we had too much sad expierance and now no one knows our country i cant describe that feeling in english but i what meant to say that we love to know that someone else in the world regonises us or knows us and we want to make our country more and more fame man/woman understand us its not our ego its toooooooo hard past see ya peace!.!.!.
I think Lithuanians are one of the most beautiful people in the world. They tend to have very refined facial features, model-like appearance. Both men and women from Lithuania are very attractive. He mentioned that many Lithuanians live in Brazil.. can you imagine how gorgeous Lithuanian-Brazilian mix looks like?! I loved to visit Palanga in Lithuania! Love from Estonia xx
It's pretty much always that way in the former Eastern Bloc. They combine the most visually appealing genes (the Scandinavians also have those by the way) with a culture that gives women no excuse not to take care of their bodies.
kallutibu are u free? I'm searching for wife:D I can tell you soo much storys about ltu every night before u sleep :D Joke. First time I heard that men, not women are attractive. Always ppl from other coutrys says ltu women are most beautifule :) Thnx!
Just a little side note about the basketball part. Not only do we practice basketball as a religion, we also have a single national basketball team with roughly 2.8 million coaches.
Trust me Lithuania has lots of interesting and beautiful things to see. I suggest visiting parks or going on hikes because you're going to see way more things than in the cities or towns.
Wrong facts: Lithuania didn't cut off that little tail village from Belarus. It was the opposite: Lithuanian villages were just randomly sliced off by occupants forming a border, but that particular village fought their way back to be united with Lithuania. Lots of villages next to Belarus border still speak Lithuanian.
fun fact: language doesn't connected with a borders most the time the closer to the border you get the bigger the mix of languages of two countries you'll get. And like half of Lithuania speaks Russian, so...
@@PandaBearWithMic True, there is always a mix at the border, because borders are usually defined by authorities in their "offices". But what it has to do with Lithuanians speaking Russian? During Soviet Occupation people had to learn Russian, it was pushed everywhere. Now young people refuse to learn it in favour of English. But it has nothing to do with the ethnic regions cut off at the borders..
This is great news! I'm Lithuanian / Canadian and i plan to visit Georgia this year because it looks so incredibly beautiful. Good to know we are friends.
@@lukasyt9604 I'm from Poland :D Ps. Thank you but my real name is Kinga haha. My frends call me Kyna and you know, I prefer Kyna than Kinga. But still thanks haha
NOOOO. You got something wrong. The first AND THE ONLY king of Lithuania who united baltic tribes was Mindaugas. Gediminas was a Grand Duke of Lithuania. And the grandson of Gediminas (our proudest ruler) was Vytautas The Great, not Vytautynas. Otherwise you did great. Thumbs up for you.
By proudest ruler i meant that he was the ruler we look at as the best for Lithuania and her interests. Lithuania at the peak of it's existence back then. Unfortunately he died before he was crowned. So yeah, we only had 1 king, except for the ones elected in The Polish-Lithuanian Commonwealth after the union in 1569. I hope i made my history teacher proud ^^
Thanks to Vytautas at one point Lithuania became a massive country, we had lands that stretched from Baltic sea to Black sea. He was also the one who, together with his cousin Jogaila, king of Poland, managed to win long lasting war against the greatest enemy - Teutonic ordin.
" managed to win long lasting war against the greatest enemy - Teutonic ordin" --- A shame that Poles had to do most of the work during wars with Teutonic Order
Kamil Szadkowski Lol. You believe that you are saying the truth? :D Poland was the one who invited Teutonic order to Prussian lands. Then Poland was the one who encouraged Teutonic raids against Lithuania. Lithuania managed to protect its borders the whole time from Teutonic knights arrival to 1410. As the time went by this order gradually became a problem even for Poland. Thanks to two lithuanians Vytautas and Jogaila and their combined local and hired mercenary forces we managed to win against the order.
"Then Poland was the one who encouraged Teutonic raids against Lithuania" --- Against Yotvingians not Lithuania as a whole. "Thanks to two lithuanians Vytautas and Jogaila and their combined local and hired mercenary forces we managed to win against the order." --- If you refer to Battle of Grunwald just remember that Lithuanians run off the battlefield leaving Poles to do the majority of the work. Besides, the war that broke the Order's might was the Thirteen Years War in which Lithuania didn't even participate.
Karlo Marovic I am a Lithuanian and I love Croatia. Dalmatia, Plitvice, Zadar, Dubrovnik and, of course, Zagreb. You, like us, have a similar story. We have giant Russia on the side. You have Serbia who wants to restore Yugoslavia. Together you share the story with Ukraine. They have Donbass you had a Knin. Therefore, I think that from the Adriatic to the Baltic States we should make an alliance. Greetings from Vilnius.
Poland started a war with Lithuania in order to restore the commonwealth after Lithuania said no thanks. After that thay occupied Vilnius proclaiming it was theirs. That's why Lith doesn't like the commonwealth

djcoolas I'm just saying that he NEVER was really crowned. He was assassinated, while his crown traveled from the Pope to Lithuania. And 6th of July we are celebrating day of King Mindaugas, witch he never actually was.
Ieva, poles from Poland know that and they never say anything like this. Only poles in Lithuania like to say it. It is very impolite to say this phrase to someone who just said that he/she likes (loves) your country, it's very very rude!

@@evilpunko-d2f Not really it has normal letters except these: ė ę ū ų. And more of those. Compare the letters to like Arabic letters, Japanese letters (man those japanese letters are hard, also Chinese) So the Lithuanian language isn't that hard to learn. Now that I think about it people would probably have problems spelling ž š lol. Yet again compare a Lithuanian letter to this japanese one or Chinese one or japanese hiragana idk Lithuanian: Ž Š Ė Ą Japanese or Chinese: 自分 し え あ So yeah lithuania isn't the hardest language lol. Jeez this feels like writing a book lol.
@@united3853 Only because of the reason that you see some letters different than others from other language doesnt mean its easy just like that. To learn lithuanian language in order to be able to speak isnt that hard I guess. But when you go in to depths on how to write and spell it correctly youll have a huge problem doing so cause of all accentuations each word has. Some of letters have commas on the top of them that go from left to right or ~, ˆ (grindà, griñdą, gr̀īda, gréda, grêdu and many more). And emphasis in lithuanian language can be where ever it wants to be, while considering other languages have them only in the beginning or in the end of the word. So what im saying is, some words that we say may have multiple meanings if you dont pronounce them properly. When I had a test on this topic my mom even told me put whatever you think its good on words cause of how hard it is and confusing can get. And dont even get me started on all of those ą, ę, ė, į, š, ų, ū, ž. Some words can have them, some wont. Depends on how you're pronouncing your sentence and words.
I am from Denmark, and I fondly remember my early high school years, when I would spend my savings taking lithuanian language courses in Copenhagen. We were only 7 students, but damn it was fun. =) Lithuania was also the first country I visited alone at an age of 14. It is one of the best memories I ever had. 2 years ago I wanted to share these memories with my wife who is from Japan and wanted a romantic holiday in Europe. So I convinced her that we should spend our holiday in Vilnius. The one thing I remember most was her looking around in horror as we exited Vilnius station and asking "Where the hell have you taken me?" xD
Few corrections: 1) Our only king was Mindaugas. Gediminas was a Grand Duke. 2) We actually know how hill of crosses started. It was a part of resistance movement against Russia. It actually have quite a story of it's own. Otherwise nice job :)
I’m a Lithuanian and just want to let you guys know nobody thinks the hill of crosses is creepy. its simply a small hill with crosses and crucifixes that is actually very holy. we do know why the hill of crosses started but it is not very interesting haha
About Lithuania and hot air baloons they are kind of crazy. Most pilots won't start when wind is above 5m/s, but not lithuanians. They love to start above it. Once whole competition was on hold due to wind 11m/s and lithuanian pilots started and landed in those conditions. Crazy man.
My dad was Georgian and served in the army with some lithuanians. He befriended a lot of them (just like the video suggests), and after the army they would visit each other sometimes. So one time my dad took his friend along with him. Now my dad knew what "Aciu" meant (thanks), but didn't mention that to his friend. And in Georgian "Achu" means "go!", "forward!" when talking to a horse. So in Vilnius they go to bar with dad's Lithuanian friends and start drinking. My dad's friend was a very good tamada (toastmaster) back in Georgia, so he was chosen as tamada there too. He'd say good things about Lithuania, Vilnius, people and so on in elaborate words. And he spoke in Russian, which was lingua franca in USSR, but not all of the guests spoke Russian, because that was not long after WW2. So those Lithuanians who could speak Russian would translate for those who couldn't. And after getting the message those who couldn't speak Russian would say "Aciu" instead of Russian "Spasibo". Long story short, after several drinks my dad's friend came to conclusion that they guests were mocking him with horse noises and got into a fight with several of them. Lithuanians were very surprised, because they thought that the feast was going extremely well up to that point. After clearing the air they all had a good laugh about it.
He was. Those fingerings were legit - especially visible in the end. It would be harder to fake that than to actually do it. Keith is simply the best. Period.
Northern Realms were actually based on a mixture of all European cultures. Looking at city and village names, there are many Celtic and Germanic influence in the Witcher. Not to mention many of those placenames were originally, Elvish, thus based on Celtic language. Slavic customs and placenames are actually most common in the rural areas of the Northern Realms. There are no major Baltic influences, though. The traditional clothing may look alike, but so do all folk clothings around all of Europe.
the northern realms are based in the polish-lithuanian commonwealth, that's why they are so similar. also the nillfgaardian empire is based in the holy roman empire

But still we had just one king😂😂andnit was kild in same day
In fact all Graet Dukes were absolute monarchs and in correspondence with German Order or Holy Roman Empire titled themselves Koenig or Rex, and were refered as such by second party. Formally only one - Mindaugas received the crown from Pope.
Mindaugas was only king of Lithuania!!!!
Honestly, I’ve seen a lot of videos trying to inform people about my country Lithuania and usually I see a lot of weird and false claims but this video has done a very good job! Really, it might be one of the best ones yet; sure there were like 1,2 mistakes but all in all very informative! Good job!!! :))
Gott aclear some things:
(this tradition was had poland as well i think)
Ačiū!
+ he mentioned that the only king in Lithuanian living history was Gediminas xdd
And he wrote Vytautynas :DD
thank you...
Everything is on point but I can't believe you forgot to add like the strongest man on earth - Big Z Savickas.

Really? I thought they spoke Polish next to the Belarus border.
@@anicetusurban8516 there where few mixed regions with Polish minority closer to Vilnius around Salcininkai, but not in south.
fun fact: language doesn't connected with a borders most the time the closer to the border you get the bigger the mix of languages of two countries you'll get.
But it has nothing to do with the ethnic regions cut off at the borders..
not only that, but during USSR many people were re-settled from parts of the country to another...

Yeahhh the Lithuanian language is one of the difficult languages in the world
@@evilpunko-d2f Not really it has normal letters except these: ė ę ū ų. And more of those. Compare the letters to like Arabic letters, Japanese letters (man those japanese letters are hard, also Chinese) So the Lithuanian language isn't that hard to learn.
Now that I think about it people would probably have problems spelling ž š lol. Yet again compare a Lithuanian letter to this japanese one or Chinese one or japanese hiragana idk
Lithuanian: Ž Š Ė Ą
Japanese or Chinese: 自分 し え あ
So yeah lithuania isn't the hardest language lol.

Wholesome. Thanks for sharing!

the baltic states remind me of the northern realms from the witcher, i guess the witcher is polish so thats where the similarities come from
Northern Realms were actually based on a mixture of all European cultures.
