The term "terroni" refers to the Italian for "land" (that is "terra"). So basically we are saying that people in the south are strongly linked to land. I think it refers to the south being more agricultural and less cosmopolitan. Some people use this term, but it can be offensive in some contexts.

After WW II many people from south italy, mostly low cultured farmers, left their homes to work in the factories in the north which was far more industrialized so, in northern cities, there were a lot of "new people" who was born in the south, had different (usually "lower") culture and does'nt know how to behave in a big city. "terroni" became a word to identify this people in a bad meaning. At that time, in some part of northern italy, there were signs outside shops and bars reading: "no dogs and 'terroni' allowed here". Now "terroni" does not have anymore a meaning strictly related to the region of birth, it has more a mening of a person who do not know how to behave in a polite way. Nontheless in the north it is used to identify southern born people but mostly as a joke. Sorry for my bad english ;)

Terroni basically derived from "terra", land in English. When industrialization happened in Italy (mostly in Northern Italy) the South remained mostly agricultural, and in a certain way still stuck by the land as was in the medieval ages. It becames an insult when a lot of people from the south moved to the north to work, as the southern where considered rough and uncultured.

you are wrong, very wrong, italians are very active, very energetic people, and in the summer it's HOT, 35+°c is not uncommon even getting to more than 40°C in some areas (not common but it happens every once in a while), the real problem is the humidity (mostly in the po valley), it makes the heat feel much worse

My first/only trip to Europe as of now has been a two week stay in the area of Apulia in the heel of Italy. It was the absolute best and I've been dying to go back ever since. We rented a car and drove everywhere which was great. Started in Lecce, then Brindisi, Ostuni, Alberobello, Matera, and finally Bari as well as checking out multiple beautiful beaches along the way. No tours, just driving and exploring everything at your own pace, I gotta say was the way to go.

My first/only trip to Europe as of now has been a two week stay in the area of Apulia in the heel of Italy. It was the absolute best and I've been dying to go back ever since. We rented a car and drove everywhere which was great. Started in Lecce, then Brindisi, Ostuni, Alberobello, Matera, and finally Bari as well as checking out multiple beautiful beaches along the way. No tours, just driving and exploring everything at your own pace, I gotta say was the way to go.

Is really strange because only italian and greeks can really understand what truly love connection there is between us.
