The mast is supposed to be centered. You have to loosen up your standing rigging in order to center the mast. You can use ratchet straps to hold the mast in the center and then tighten your standing rigging. I recommend using SparTite epoxy wedge to seal the mast and then add a mast boot. By centering your mast you can properly tune your rigging so that loads are evenly placed for optimal performance and so that you don’t snap your mast in heavy weather.
Center the mast in the deck hole. Loosen the rigging first. After you center the mast, then wedge the mast, and install the boot. I also put 4200 at the top of the mast boot, in-between the boot and mast where the top hose clamp goes.
Speaking as a young man, OK, old man who has a young man spent decades in kitchens everywhere from dishwasher all the way up to executive chef, I can tell you that ceramic knives are wonderful. They hold an edge, better, their excruciatingly sharp there’s just one thing don’t drop them they tend to shatter.
From dishwasher to executive chef!! That’s awesome man! Yea I did break a tip trying to use it as a tool. Like you say, they are so sharp though and the never rusting part is awesome for boat life!
lol....I commented too soon about the mast....Sooooooo glad you have people that don't pat you on the back and say "you're great" "Don't worry about it" they tell you how it is right away!! love it.
I love that you keep being honest. Yea, there are a ton of comments about centering. It should be an easy fix. Remove the boot and hammer in equal size wedges to center the mast. It should have little effect on the tuning, but anyways you can always retune. I would center and go sail and see if adjustments are needed.
It's wonderful to see you back on Chak doing work for yourself again. THIS is the content I've been missing from ya. Much better than the psychoanalysis and self care episodes.🤙
You've been on that boat for how many years and you have no clue what you're doing. You have to have an even space all around the mast . You have to adjust the standing rigging to achieve this then put the wedges in between the mast and the cabin top. You need to get some type of a sailing instructional book on showing you how to do this boat before you end up injured or dead in the boat on the bottom
Looks like the previous owner 'adjusted' the rigging and then found out that the leaky mast boot had rotted all the wedges, so he just hammered in new ones from the bottom and slapped a new boot over the old leaky one. It pays to have someone who really knows sailboats to take a look at anything you're thinking of buying. But 'Hindsight is Best Sight', right?...
Yep, that’s why they say get a survey! In our rookie minds we were saving a couple thousand dollars. We learned what we thought was a decent amount and figured we could inspect it ourselves. The idea of paying for a survey and then not buying it because of the findings was a lot for our budget at the time.
, please please. Please, with help you’ll be able to CENTER the Stick, in its allotted space. The boat will sail as she should. NO HELM !! Good luck Rad, In the Great Lakes
Patience is a virtue that will save your life when sailing. This hobby is expensive and if you cut corners you can win Darwin award. All smart sailors agree that water tanks should be stainless & diesel tanks aluminum. Bon voyage!
That mast is really wrong . Tune it first before you put in the wedges and then the wedges go in like tightening a tire , one side the the other a little at a time . The mast needed to be centered , not to the hole but to the chainplates and keel before you started . Maybe there is a tuning guide for you at the owners site ?? The hole may not be centered , those production boats were shockingly bad if you ever laser them . Anyway the mast does not work on the hole but on the chainplates and keel - center to that . The owners site should have a recommended headstay length , measure and set to that for rake . .
@@Bumsonaboat Masts are surprisingly robust and can take some abuse . My advice is to use the main halyard to measure center from the chainplates ( try and use even tension) . Then sight up the mast looking for bend side to side . Get rid of it with the lowers . Then use the main halyard and a weight on a windless day to measure the rake of the mast , there should be some . Then ask at the owners forum for what others set the boat at for tension . You can borrow a tension gauge from one of the local race boats - they will be glad to help .
You definitely need to invest about $30 on a very important book, Don Casey's complete sailboat maintenance book. I understand that you don't have a lot of money but somethings need to be done correctly for safety reasons. I know that you made it this far with a screwed up mast. If you get caught in a blow with your mast like that you could easily be dismasted. That wouldn't be good, especially if you are single handed.
Yeah, you need to listen to Herbie about the mast. It's not really a biggie (I suspect you've already done it) If you want a recommendation for navigation . I have been using an Oukitel, rugged/ip68 10" tablet for the past three years and it's worked great. I got mine through Amazon. I used a RAM Mount to secure it under my sprayhood.
Joel.....buddy....get some knowledgeable help! That mast should be centered in the deck hole! Repairs and troubleshooting require some thought....and common sense. Does it make sense to you that the mast is so far offset in the hole?
Now it doesn’t but at the time all I knew is it had been this way for 7 years and we have sailed through some nasty storms this way with no issues in the mast or rigging.
Y don't you epoxy those wedges in, that tape isn't going to work,Hate to tell you that but that's alot of pressure against that n heavy seas... but hey u got to learn things on your own, Good Luck
that much is certain, even Joel describes it as a death-defying sail on their first run. When they got it on the hard in Luperon, that's when the real condition of the boat was painfully discovered.
@@rinkrude1 It goes further in my mind , Joel and his buddies were clearly complete novices with dreams too big for the boat and he could have killed them with his dishonesty .
Please do the mast over. It needs to be centered. That is all. No ifs ands or buts. Yes, it'll take a few minutes to loosen the stays a bit and tune it a little after it's centered. Just do it. Really? are trying to freak us out?

I fully agree, the Best way to go.
Thanks! You are right on with what Rigging Doctor suggested. I’ll be doing this during my next big refit!
@@BumsonaboatYou can wait for the SparTite epoxy but you should really spread those wedges around before you sail it.

The sailboat is coming along nicely. Hope the weather cooperates for your next sail.

It is tough sometimes but as I’ve settled into it I’ve seen it do good for my spirit!

I think the mast was fine the way you had it. Not a racing boat.
