  • Of course my first attempt at pulling anchor solo was complicated to say the least. It's now or never. Either I have what it takes to sail this boat solo or I will find out quickly that I don't.

    Getting way better. Use your traveler to your advantage. Move it across close to the boom. This will allow you to keep the main sheet shorter, and thereby reduce the amount the boom can swing on an accidental jibe. Keep at it!

    Joel, please!, When you go forward to work the mast or foredeck., make sure to have yourself clipped in to the safety lines. You should have a taught line run from the bowsprit to the cockpit down the middle and hook into that also. One misstep or wind shift and it's all over. Get a harness and an EPIRB ASAP.

    2 cents on leaving the mooring with the sails up, I would skip that and hoist outside where you have space .. it much saver and easier to focus on the anchor only, then when your outside with a lot of space use the autopilot to keep the nose in the wind and hoist the mainsail, take a heading and unfurl the jib. i solo a lot and this has been the easiest add best for me.

    I'm in the middle of taking my own baby steps. Headed out into the Atlantic for the fist time last weekend, in north Florida, and got my ass kicked. The ship traffic and wind against tide were just too much so I turned and headed in. You're doing it right, step by step, test the boat and yourself. Cheers bro.

    There are ways so you don't have to gibe. Make a couple of tacks and you don't have to worry about that. Protect your equipment. Your rigging is old so you need to treat it gently. Good job with Otto ya Bum.

    Keeping a reef in while solo sailing is a great choice. Don't forget it's always easier to shake that out if you are sure the wind has died for a while than putting the reef in in a hurry. Once you do start sailing with the jib as well you can play more with balancing the jib vs reefed main. (Do you have a smaller jib?) Sometimes it helps to put a line around the boom to hold the clew of the sail down as needed if it's pulling up to much/vibrating (sorry if I missed that). Does it have a leach line you could tighten? Or maybe it was just luffing as you headed into the wind.

    To pull an anchor single handed, you want to just bump it forward, then get forward and start pulling up chain, when it gets too tough lock down the chain and repeat the process. I did this solo when a dead windlass and 170 feet of chain out, topped off with a 70 lb rockna.

    Well done Joel! Getting off anchor without a windlass is pretty tricky at times. I only have a manual windlass and i think the biggest aid to soli sailing - which i do all the time, would be to have an electric windlas with a cockpit remote! From January to April this year i didnt have a functional motor so i was sailing onto and off the anchor. That was one hell of a learning curve! One thing i learnt was that i need a longer main sheet to be able let the boom out further to enable me to steer the boat better. Looks like you might benafit from that also.

  • @kapsail
    @kapsail 5 месяцев назад +1

    What would have worked to get the back edge of the main sail tighter, would have been to ease off the traveler to leeward and tighten up the mainsheet which also helps flatten the sail and reduce the healing of the boat. Have fun.

  • @KeepItSimpleSailor
    @KeepItSimpleSailor 5 месяцев назад +8

    Anchorages can cause higher heart rates - it happens, and we do our best for it not to happen.
    Nothing wrong with motor sailing. I’d ease your topping lift, and use the traveller more. When I come into an anchorage and there’s safe room to do so I will work my way right up into the anchorage well past where I actually want to anchor and just get a full idea of where everyone is, where they’re lying to tide and wind, an depths. I then wander back to the spot I’ve chosen and set anchor.
    I still say singlehanded is just the best way to sail 👍🏻🇦🇺

    Hey joel, great to see you shaking down you boat on a solo sail.
    Your getting lots of great advice in the comments. Sheeting in the main was a great tactic you did when tacking and jibing. I do that all the time! Try to keep a bit of tension on the boom vang, that can keep the boom in check i case of accidental jibe. Ive been on a racing boat where on the jibe the boom lifted up and when it came down it tore the main in two.
    Looking good out there!
    Enjoy!
