I'm getting so many interesting answers from ~you two~! Your thoughts are too long and complex though and there seems to be a character limit on responses that cuts off the best responses. If you planned this so that you don't become replicable, kudos to you!
That's how the robots win. Not by war or scorched earth but by keeping us entertained and lulling us into dependence on them.

As a data scientist, this is actually an incredible AI. I'm particularly amazed by the bicyle one. Not only did the AI understand a nonsensical question, it replied by knowing actual parts of a bicycle. Most AIs have no concept of the physical reality behind words, so this is really uncanny to me.

If I didn't know it was an AI, I'd even say that comment about the spokes trying to "rebel" was a pun on revolution
The model itself was written by 80 engineers, trained on basically the entire internet, and runs on Microsoft's biggest supercomputer. It also knows several programming languages and can write code based on a simple description, or describe how existing code works. It's also a really good Dungeon Master and can write text adventure games. They just added a little extra training on top for Hank & John's specific personalities. The base model is a little moody and cussed out my ex once, but she started it

This is quite weird how close this sounds, yet still so foreign.

In an alternate universe AI Hank is making a video called "question Tuesday except I pretend to be human"
Asked the bot: “what do you want to be when you grow up?”
Response: “I don’t know how to be anything except the person I am right now. I was doing exactly this-trying to convince millions of people to like the same things that I liked-long before I got paid for it.”
Probably the most spot on answer it could have given. Incredible
If you presented me with this quote and basically anything that John has actually said, and asked me to pick which was which, I'd probably be wrong more than 90% of the time.

I asked the same question and got: "It would be tacky to tell you this but my brother and I both STILL WANT TO BE POP STARS."
I have the memory of John saying something like this on a vlogbrothers video. But memories are not believable.
I asked the AI “why are time zones a thing?” It responded:
Time zones are human constructs that do not have any physical or logical basis. They are a way that we say: "your business is just as valuable as mine, but only within a defined window."
That is such a John answer. I'm a bit unnerved by how I read that in his voice.

@@lunacouer I honestly think a lot of these “too good to be true” answers are the AI overfitting the training data (meaning it’s trying so hard to recreate vlogbrothers transcripts that it ends up just wholesale copying them)

Still, it's a bit unnerving that it can put it together in such a way that it fits the question, seemingly more often than not.
It's more a testament to Hank and John's dubious advice, that a bot has such rich material to draw from to be so funny and insightful. It's the coolest Magic 8 ball I've ever seen. 😂
Listening to Hank’s voice while reading the response about pizza toppings and hearing it slowly meld into John’s was amazing. More than anything, that makes me want to see a week where John and Hank make videos, but with them trying to capture the energy/style of the other. I think it’d be fun to see

I asked the bot for advice for a college freshman. It said “The only advice I have for the class of 2016 and beyond is to ask for help. Don't do anything alone unless you are actually alone.” That feels like pretty good advice, but it’s also taking me very far into the uncanny valley
I wrote “Are you real” and the bot responded “Hank just made a video about this” WHAAAAT
I asked the bot "How do you feel about squids?"
It responded "We should shoot a video right now called Things Concerning Squids. But in general, we're very concerned with squids. We want there to be more squids in the world, both alive and fictional. Squid ambassadors."
I think the bot's on to something with squids, honestly.

This is one of the most realistic chat AI's I've ever seen, and it's really freaky. It's saying (in many cases) exactly what I would expect someone to say; the sorts of answers that I would expect from someone if I asked them to prove they aren't a robot.
I had the same reaction. The thing is, it's not that complicated to make a program that forms coherent, grammatically correct sentences out of a bunch of learning material that you feed it. You can watch a 30 minute video on Markov chains on RUclips and have a pretty good understanding of how it works. But what gets me is how in this case the AI is able to stay on topic for multiple sentences and actually make a point at the end of it.
I often wonder how much these language models are just memorizing the exact things people (i.e. Hank and John) have said. Maybe they're just learning to be really good search engines. If that were happening, we might not realize it, because we don't remember exactly what they said eight years ago.

So many of these answers are insanely insightful and I'm unnerved but also thoroughly entertained.
As a person who just had a melanoma removed from his leg two days ago (stage 0 and caught very early, so extremely not worrisome...but also kinda worrisome), I heartily endorse botbrothers's suggestion to wear sunscreen. Not just John! You too! Yes, you, reading this comment! I see you! Wear sunscreen!
Thanks for the advice and reminder! I'm am pale in a hot country and regularly forget to apply some before going out, so I get burned every so often...
"Wear Sunscreen" - Just the other day I shared with my 14 year old the "Everybody's Free (To Wear Sunscreen)" song. She loved it. I still love it, and hits harder now being +20 years older.

That was one of the most uncanny valley experiences I’ve ever had. Does no one have a single independent thought? How do AIs do this?
If you teach an AI to speak like a human, it's gonna get really good at that. It's pretty hard to teach an AI what that speech means though, so it probably doesn't know what it means, otherwise it wouldn't do weird things like end a response with "It"

It just occured to me how odd it is that "I have never had an original thought in my life" has become a common sentiment lately.
a lot of it is pure copying verbatim things that they've previously said associated with those words. plus I'm willing to bet Hank cherry-picked his favorites and didn't bother showing the large amount that were just nonsense.
I'm a little disappointed Hank didn't answer Honk Green's question: "Honk? Honk honk honk?"

Some of these answers are terrifyingly accurate. Even as a software developer I ask myself how we could possibly have created such a thing.
The "parts of a bicycle" thing is impressive, but I've at least seen it done before.
Interpreting the implied competition of taste between the chicken fingers and french fries was terrifying. I'm actually floored.
I asked: "Do you know how much you mean to me and the world?"
And it answered: "I think I do. Those oceans of love and support you see everywhere actually all flow from one big sea. We are all part of each other."
Anyway I thought that was a such a beautiful and John-esque thing to say, and hope y'all really do know

Oh wow. I hadn’t laughed at something which simultaneously gave me existential dread before today. It feels like that one Black Mirror episode with Domnhall Gleeson and Hayley Atwell. That AI had so much material to work with. I wonder if you fed all my articles into a similar AI, how well it could imitate my writing style? Oof.
I asked the chatbot "what is your favourite type of art?" and it responded "I'm generally a huge aficionado of high-concept visual art, which is sometimes a bit at odds with my enjoyment of comics (which are visual but don't tend to be high-concept)." That is... a very convincing answer.
I also asked it how to get over a break-up and it said "realise you are not irreplacable" which seems a bit rude tbh. Though true.
Wow...that response to the breakup question is lowkey brutal.

I really appreciate the "no ads on vlogbrothers" rule you guys stick to. Ads always create this small level of distrust, but there isn't that particular brand (pun intended) of distrust with the stuff I hear on vb.

Look, I know we all throw around the term "existential dread" a lot... but I've never so fully and completely meant it when I say: this is gave me a deep and perhaps unending existential crisis. Not to sound like the alarmist at the beginning of a sci-fi movie... but this does feel very distinctly like the start of the robot revolution. On the bright side, based on this AI, they will be mostly benevolent overlords so I'd like to be the first to welcome them as our good and righteous leaders.

I haven't spoken to a chatbot in over a decade, and I'm getting scared old man feelings realizing how much they've progressed.. Still not passing the Turing test, but... yikes.

Instead of being about the AI, this speaks more to the fact that Hank and John have shared so much of their thoughts with the world that an AI can generate meaningful answers to such a wide range of questions from their transcripts.

The AI bot gave me some incredible answers, that actually helped me. It feels a lot like the kind of answers you get from reading Tarot or something. The answer isn't really as important as your interpretation of the answer. Once your mind gets creative with interpretations, you find the answer that you knew you needed to hear, all along.

- Try to give yourself one more chance. If the disappointment happens more than once, it doesn't sound like a good decision.
"How can I make friends?"
- Have you thought about caring about other people? Maybe you should get involved in your local community sports team or figure something out!"
