In which John celebrates bit commitment, and explores how the quality of the bit can sometimes matter less than the quality of the commitment to that bit.

An odd thought, but I'd love to see you interviewing random Nerdfighters about what's important to them and what they're passionate about
Almost like the Nerdfighter Anthropocene Reviewed... Nerd scene reviewed?
I truly think this community is astonishingly brilliant and commits to many various bits that create such a beautiful puzzle.
With the lovely message cemented lately from you and Hank about working hard on one or two parts of the massive problems humanity is working on and collectively making a difference, I'd love to hear what the community specifically is working on.

Reframing my PhD as "committing to the bit" has somehow just given me a lot more motivation to keep going.
+
I love that despite John's well-documented internal bias to every day being Friday in his novels, he still managed to get the day wrong on an actual Friday.
He didn't commit to the bit this time!
It made me genuinely question what day of the week it is because I have a deadline today (friday) and sudenly had a little bit of hope that I would have an extra day.
@@kaleidorainbow unless that WAS the bit - not knowing what Friday is or is not
I didn't even notice he said the wrong day until I saw the comments😅
I'm reading Looking for Alaska and I guess the bit must have been established later, because it's Monday right now in the book
Honestly, the All Star thing was so funny and iconic. Commiting to the bit is so underestimated.
+++
+
I didn't realize what they were doing with that until like a month in. still my favorite bit they've ever done
Memes and random internet things did more for All Star than any promotion could
I started making all star my personality at that pount
Well if vlogbrothers ain't just the embodiment of committing to a bit for 15 odd years, I don't know what it.

I love how the Pizza John bust really captures the crazy eyes.
Like a big crazy pizza pie?
@@doctormo That's amore?
Good job y'all
Committing to the bit is a strange combination of both spontaneity and intense dedication, two things that feel almost like opposites, like they shouldn't belong together, yet somehow they do, and that is what I think makes it so utterly and beautifully human.
+++

👏 WELL 👏 FREAKING 👏 SAID👏

This is so wonderfully put it feels like it could've been pulled directly from the video
My favorite example of committing to the bit is the piece "As slow as possible" by John Cage.
It is being played on an organ in Germany right now: They started playing it in 2001 and it won't be finished until 2640.
The next note will be played in 2024.
It's both hilarious and strangely hopeful/comforting.
i feel like 4'33 counts too
I'm not sure if that's better or worse than "Longplayer", which started January 1st 2000 and will play continuously, without repetition, until December 31st 2999 if all goes to plan. A millennium of bit commitment!
@@myladycasagrande863 omygosh yeah that takes the cake
@@myladycasagrande863 so, clearly John was wrong. The best time to commit to the bit was 22 years and 10 months ago...
The avant-garde movement is wonderful because it's largely built around the idea of committing to the bit.
I can't believe the Poe bust has been with us for so long! Talking to him like a living person is another bit committal, and I'm here for it.
What could you do with a Poe bust, anyway?
@@quinngauvin137 Yay! I'm not the only person who still remembers that video!😁
@@quinngauvin137 Place a pallid bust of Poe just above your chamber door?
Was there ever a Pizza John shower curtain? That is a level of bit commitment only the top tier Pizza John-ers would take on.
A great way to save water (by being too scared to shower ever again).
I don't think we've done shower curtain. Baby onesie, christmas ornament (hands down my favorite), pj bottoms, and up there in terms of bit commitment: the pizza john face mask.
I remember last year having shower curtains, I guess you could go check the video
all I want is for the Pizza John Windshield Sunshade to make a return to future Pizzamases. Not buying one that year is my greatest retail regret
I somehow feel like shower curtain isn't as bad as floor rug. Like ppl have weird shower curtains all the time, they don't usually have some dude's face as a rug
My wife and I have an ongoing bit for 11 years now: once a year since we started dating, usually sometime around our anniversary, we take a picture together. In every picture except the first we're holding the previous years picture. We're currently 10 pictures deep and it's a reasonable chain, but can't wait to be 50 years deep and have just a massive recursive chain of pictures.
I like how the giant ball of paint goes unmentioned but looms massively in the minds of all who know of it as a committed bit.

WAIT I don't know, please let me in on the bit!
A friend and I lived around the corner from each other. One day at a bar after a few drinks we decided that if we ever run into each other in the street we should walk up to each other, hug, and walk away with no words exchanged.
For the next few years everytime we'd see each other we did just that. It was always fun when someone was with us and we had to explain it after the fact.
I committed to the bit by actually 3d printing a small statue of John Peter Muhlenberg aka the original Pizza John. I left it out with pizza and cash for you 😌
Committing to a bit is Andy Skampt vibes 🤡
Next you must promptly drive to Philadelphia to place a small 3D printed figure Pete at the top of the steps Rocky ran up
*Pete’s-a-John
Like you would leave out cookies and milk for Santa, or you actually left it somewhere John would go???
@@amykathleen2 like milk and cookies for Santa! They talked about it on the most recent episode of dear hank and John haha 😅
When I legally changed my name to Jo Mama, my parents were upset and flabbergasted. They just couldn't understand. I'm glad you do John.

my quote for october is "commit to the bit, but the bit is just your life" and I think this video came at the perfect time
I will be carrying this with me this month. Thank you!
That’s an excellent quote!
Hey, that is seriously the kind of motivation I need right now. Thank you.
You putting the rug in random rooms reminds me of my art high school dorms where we had a random cardboard cutout of a generic butler, and it was tradition to put him in random places just to make people go '!!!'
Whoever got pranked by him was then the person whose responsibility it was to put him in the next hiding place. Truly a good school-wide bit.

We did this in my house but it was with an animated Lifesize talking bust of Elvis that moved and sang when told to by a remote control
THIS IS GLORIOUS
I love the idea of The Yeti being startled repeatedly by a rug of her husband’s face appearing around the house
The all-star era got me through lockdown
So thanks for commiting to the bit
@@flowerpower3496 Glad you're still here with us!
Bit commitment is one of my favorite human things, and both Hank and John’s commitment to many many bits makes me so happy
During lockdown I was joking with a friend that knitting wasn't indie anymore now everyone was doing it and she suggested that I should spin my own yarn if I wanted to be so special. Within 24 hours I had purchased a drop spindle and a year on I am spending my Saturday tending to some raw fleece I have been washing for the last week. Committing to the bit has completely and irrevocably changed my life for the better.
My favourite bit commitment is Sam Riegel from critical role wearing the exact same shirts in episodic order across campaigns. He wore a burt reynolds cosplay in like campaign 1 episode 25 or something YEARS ago, and continued to wear it at the same point in campaigns 2 and 3. Honestly I think that man's existence is my favourite bit commitment
Legit my first thought
YES
Oh hey critters! Love to find you guys in unexpected places on the internet
+
Sam Riegel is bit commitment personified. And Sully Beau Brown, from No Rolls Barred, is bit *chasing* personified 😂
As someone who has been sick with a fever the past few days and hasn’t cracked a smile at most anything, because pain-the Sarah bit made me giggle. That’s such a great use for the Pizza John rug😂
P.S: It’s not Thursday?!?
I hope it's only uphill from here. Get well soon!
@@PearlAlex aww thank you, that means a lot!
This reminded me of a local Cleveland Guardians fan, who was so committed to his bit of pounding a drum at home games and had become such a fixture that when Cleveland had a ”home game" in I think Milwaukee (it's complicated), the team flew him in so that he could keep it up.
Your mention of those two cities reminds me of another iconic bit committer. A person in Milwaukee painted the words "WELCOME TO CLEVELAND" on his rooftop so as to confuse passengers in flights landing at Milwaukee Airport.
This reminds me that I (and likely all of Nerdfighteria) desperately need an update from that secret fiddler. If you are out there, or perhaps even here with us right now, please, DID YOU COMMIT TO THE BIT!?!?
Maybe the real bits we committed to were the friends we made along the way. And also a floor rug. I'm excited for mine to get here
do you have a plan on where to put it? I'm genuinely so curious
@@kf10147 my girlfriend and I are actually in the process of deciding. We thought maybe our walk-in since we'll never wear our shoes in there (our place is mostly hard floor so we've never been too picky about shoes in the house), but I almost feel like that's too hidden for this lovely a bit. Will get back to you on that. Haha.
When I think of the number of bits that this channel has committed to over the years, it truly does make me smile. I know this wasn't necessarily the point of the video, but it got me thinking about the penny video that brought me here way back in 2011. I truly believe that this channel has made me a kinder and more empathetic adult for having known about it in my formative college years. Thanks for committing to the best bit, which is of course, Vlogbrothers.
👀 I would love to find out if the Fiddle Concert became a reality
I am consistently impressed with how much y'all are able to fit into 4 minutes. AGH the song lyric bit added so much nonsensical joy to a very bleak 2020. Also I really hope Pia is out there doing amazing on their fiddle. To many more bits to which to commit!
yasss Pia! get it 💪
Yesss Pia! Hopefully her fiddle playing reveal doesn’t play out quite the same way as narrated by John and Hank on the pod though 😅
Pizzamas feels like a pretty solid commitment to the bit. I wasn't here when it began yet I'm still impressed that it's still going
+
I love the art of bit commitment. I have worn the exact same shirt on my birthday for the past six years and I don’t plan on quitting 😆
Random personal fun fact: I found this channel around the time the all star titled videos were coming out. Always thought you guys just titled them in code or something, till I realized it's actual meaning 🙃
This is not entirely what you were talking about but as someone who recently accidentally admitted to their English professor that they write Kirk/Spock slash fanfiction in their spare time, (and has since spent their days alternately cringing and wishing they could turn back time) it is reassuring to me to know other people place value on earnestness and honesty, so thank you for that. Even if I can't change things now, I can still let go of the shame knowing that being true to myself and committing to who I am is better than presenting a false version to other people, even if that would be easier.
There’s a guy who has climbed Mt. Fuji more than 2,100 times. He’s 79 years old and still going as it. They call him “Mr. Fuji-san”. His bit commitment is world class.
I, for a time, had an LLC registered as Legitimate Business L.L.C. that I did consulting work under, sometimes in excess of 20K. I did this because somewhere, at sometime, some auditor will be going through financial records of one of these businesses and ask about the 20K line item for "Consulting" from "Legitimate Business" and I will never get to see the reactions or consequences of that line item but the thought of it makes me immensely happy.
I imagine that's got to be part of the reason John and Hank named their charity organization "The Foundation to Decrease World Suck."
Part of what I love about seeing people, and especially whole communities commit to a bit is that iy reminds me that we actually can be intentional in how we shape our own culture, and that we actually are capable of committing to long-term projects. It's easy some mornings for me to start thinking that's become impossible for us. But seeing Nerdfighters commit to the Pizza John thing for this long is why I truly believe that we can also commit to the work in Sierra Leone long-term, too.
OH NOOOO POE BUST, 🎶 what can you do with a poe bust 🎶 is going to be stuck in my head for the rest of the day

LOVED the All Star lyrics bit, that was epic. Looking forward to a Rax payoff, on some shiny golden day an undetermined amount of time in the future.

I love this video, and I love all the goofy ways you guys commit to bits. (Also yesterday I just got to day 900 in my draw-a-corgi-every-day project, A Corgi A Day, so I feel like I'm doing pretty well in the commit-to-the-bit department 😆)
Speaking of committing to a bit, that fact that Community just announced that the Six Seasons And A Movie movie is finally happening, all because of one throwaway scene 10+ years ago that snowballed into memes for years. If your commitment to a bit doesn’t turn into an entire reunion film, you didn’t commit hard enough
When committing to a bit, always remember the motto: What would Abed do?
In a smaller way I try to commit to my husband's bits on a daily basis. He has some cognitive differences that make for some great creativity and improve seens, not so much great for staying on topic or understanding what someone says to him but GREAT for random acts of awesome. I used to just be like what is even happening? But now I join in, usually in song and we are both much happier about it.
💜💜💜
"(whereupon they broke up.)" is easily my favorite part of this whole video.
i have never been more shocked by a moment in a vlogbrothers video and i need the full story NOW!!
I'm looking forward to the upcoming Rax reunion video from you and Hank.
I hear Hank is going to be in Indianapolis for a portion of Pizzamas. I think it's within road trip distance. This needs to happen.
This needs to happen!!!!
bit commitment is an essential tool (I find), for parenting. For example I committed to the bit that I had "Dad vision" with my younger kids, who for many years believed I had superhuman powers of observation when in reality I was usually just using logical reasoning and context clues to determine what was going on out of my sight.
I literally just bought a rug this week for my office! I seriously considered canceling the order and getting a pizza john rug, but alas I couldn't bring myself to commit to the bit 😂 Did get some other pizzamas merch though of course!
edit: 10 updoots and I'll commit to the bit
You gotta commit to the bit now (assuming it's financially possible)
I've been commiting to the bit of experiencing consciousness for a bit too long, but it's worth it to get to watch John talk to his bust of Edgar Allan Poe
I had a huge desire to shout “OMG, it’s burning!” For some reason I love that bit 😂
Committing to the bit does create its own unique type of beauty, and I love that it encourages us all to just try something we want to do, because the bit doesn't have to be performed perfectly for the commitment to it to produce something amazing.
I'm so glad you got the floor rug, it's truly delightful 🧡
Having ADHD, i was down on myself watching part of this for all the times have not committed to bit, but I was reminded that I just don’t appreciate a lot of my past and current commit to the bit moments. I’m currently trying to visit every cemetery in Berlin, and I am succeeding. I commit to the bit as best I can 💪🏾
John, Hank, until we see a video of the travel to and enjoyment of, the last Rax restaurant, you have not committed to the most important bit. But really if we stop and think about it, wasn’t the bit the friends we made along the way?
Capriciously deciding to be consistent is a mind-boggling concept. I have huge respect for anyone that succeeds, but my true love is for all of us who don't.
My current bit is playing recorder for ten minutes a day. Currently about grade 3 level after a few weeks - the aim is grade 8 in two years (or less). It's very satisfying (I do also play flute though so that background helps a lot). It's amazing how much you can achieve by dedicating just a little time everyday. 😊
Long term nerdfighter that doesn't consume vlogbrothers content consistently all the time.
Honestly the commitment to the All Star lyrics bit brought me back in full swing and I haven't left since.
I LOVE committing to the bit. One of my favorite bit commitments is when I want to say one thing, realize it’s wrong and/or stupid midway through saying it, and say it anyway with more confidence than I would have before.
Running gags are also just really satisfying (although that’s not exactly bit commitment, more bit commitment adjacent), especially when they’re done consistently across multiple installments of a given thing. I felt really sad when last night’s Scott the Woz episode didn’t open with a “Hey All, Scott Here” because it felt like a breach of the running gag.
Apparently that "What can you do with a Poe Bust!" video was from 13 years ago!! Seeing it featured in a video again felt like randomly running into a friend you haven't seen since kindergarten while shopping for groceries, brings back so feeaking many fond memories! :D
Could we get a COMMIT TO THE BIT merch?
It would be nice.
I have fond memories of listening to maybe my second or third DH&J and them talking about all star and then the next day the all star videos started. It was such a great introduction to this community
Your puff continues to commit to the bit of being uncontrollable and that's why it is the best vlogbrother
Are we forgetting that vlogbrothers itself is an enormous commitment to the bit?
I’m a relatively new and big fan of yours and Hank’s and all of the incredible gifts you bring into this world, and I just wanted to say a little ‘thank you’ for all that you are and all that you do.💗
"whereupon they broke up"
Oh my GOD 😂
I absolutely love you two. Thanks for the light you bring, and for being brave enough to share your own darkness so it's not as scary for the rest of us.
I’m watching this video on the precipice of my birthday and your video is reminding me that i do love a good bit and I sure hope I will continue to commit to the bit for many more years to come
I love this video. Like actually love it so much. It's exactly what I needed to hear in order to keep committing to all the bits in my life
Committing to the bit is so important. It's the art of catching those small moments of joy when you have an awesome idea, and then not saying "nah" but riding it out as long as you can.
I’ve been binging Bluey, and it’s gotten me into the habit of committing to the bit in kids games. Kids sometimes appreciate this, other times they get confused or upset.
So because of this video I went back and watched the entire playlist of the All Star videos (thank you too Katherine Zhao for compiling the playlist) and it was trippy to go back to 2020 and see how much has changed and also how much hasn't changed. Watching that playlist was such a nice thing for my brain on a day when I just wanted to curl up and not feel (chemo sucks, everybody). Thank you.
And also thank you for reminding me to gratitude journal. It's good for me, even and especially when I don't want to do it.
I feel that this video was written for my spouse, who saw the rug, and decided that you know what, all the items needed to be purchased and just bought the whole set this year. I love Pizzamas.
My favorite but commitment you have made is with PIH. The MCOE is such a worthy project and I am so glad we all get to be a part of it.
You guys are already more committed to the bit than most. We have customer service week next week with costumes. Here is hoping I can commit half as well as you two.
The giddyness and pure joy in your voice when you hold up merch for pizzamas gives me so much joy.
How 'bout yours is my favorite vlogbrothers video. I'm glad you both committed to the bit.
I love this in so many ways!!
I know you were worried about following up Hank’s video but John I gotta say you did a dang good job. 👏🏻🥰

Committing to a bit is a wonderful exercise in flagrantly dismissing the ever present question, "Why?" And basking in the pure chaos that is simply being.
i cannot believe that johns bust is the reason that i have finally bought pizzamas merch. i cannot bloody wait. i love committing to the bit
Happy Pizzamas!
Sounds like Sarah appreciates Pizzamas merch as much as my wife. Happy Pizzamas everyone!
The All Star thing happened at the height of the pandemic. It was such a comfort twice a week.
It really was.

This is absolutely joyful.
I wholeheartedly agree that committing to the bit is always the way to go. The level of commitment can turn a mere bit into an impressive project.
Gosh you guys make me smile.

I find this fascinating, because the Brothers Green so often demonstrate committing to the bit in all the ways outlined in the video and more, and yet his mustache only lasted a single video this year.

Although poor Sarah doesn't deserve to suffer like that
i’d love to see the bust painted in vivid colors for some beautiful accuracy
Sending weekly vlogs to each other is a pretty good bit someone should do that.

My girlfriend and I did EXACTLY THAT many years ago. She looked at me and said, “Hey, let’s go to Graceland!” And I said, “Sure! Let’s go!” Nine hours later, we were at the Graceland Days Inn. The next morning, we signed up for the super-duper, dee-luxe Platinum Tour, quietly mocking the Jungle Room and the gold plated bathroom fixtures in the airplanes. On the way out of town we happened to drive by the Lorraine Motel, which had been converted into a civil rights museum. We remember that totally spontaneous trip as “The Weekend of the Kings.”
I absolutely loved every single word of this video

The bit commitment that i am really need Hank and John to do is visiting a Rax in Finland! We need that video!
As a long-time avid listener of the pod, I can say without question Hank and John's favorite form of advice is "commit to the bit". Any problem can be solved in some way by committing to the bit. It is advise that is both perfectly dubious and usually quite helpful. Now it is time for me to sit and think on the ways I can commit to the bit in my life. :)
Fantastic content
I love this.
I am delighted
I've been watching Vlogbrothers for your valuable and inspirational thoughts on life for over a decade now. Of all the little tidbits I've absorbed over the years, I think this one might have taken the cake for the most inspirational; particularly as I can't help but apply it to my own committed silly bit.
To you sir, I salute you...and return to my work on my Bit.
My friend sent me this video with the message "This is you" and I have never received a higher compliment or greater motivation to live my life with commitment to the bit that is existence
That reaction to the rug was priceless 😱
“A few years back” I’m pretty sure the fiddle question is from like 7 years ago
I just looked it up because I thought "there's no way it's been that long." Well it has in fact been that long. It's from episode 62 in 2016 (the same episode that gave us the pumpkins and penguins sign off).
