That's not true, even before the unification Southern Italy was poorer than the North. Regions like Sicily, Calabria and Apulia were characterized by great social and economic disparieties. The economy was reliant on mere agriculture, industrialization was heavily lacking. It's true that the unification widened the gap with Northern Italy, buy it's not very difficult to understand that in a moment or in another Southern Italy had to get rid of the landowners system and its agricultural policies in order to evolve and compete with the others. Therefore, saying that Southern Italy only suffered from Italy's unification is wrong.
