yeah, I will admit, this is not a very realistic scenario at all. Italy was far too fragmented and divided for unification to be possible, but I thought it was a the Italic League was a cool point to jump off into a different scenario. The wars were all based on real wars, the Italo-Ottoman war in this is basically the Venice-Ottoman war of the real world, but now a united italy would be stronger than Venice so they would win. I used the agreed upon outcome by the real european allies for my scenario. The burgundian wars did occur in real life and I think Italy probably would have wanted savoy, so an alliance with france made sense. The wars against the mamluks were a combination of the mamluks-portugese wars and the mamluks-ottoman wars. I would encourage you to read into these conflicts as they are pretty interesting and not well known. I try my best to have some basis in historical scenarios, while still changing things, but yeah, its obviously not realistic. thats a really good idea, i don't know why I didn't think of that. In this world, a stable italy probably would have funded him so Italy may have dominated the entire new world
The thing in real life is: Columbus and other italian sailors were employed in the Atlantic by the iberians. Christopher himself sailed years for the portuguese. So, in this scenario, would a unified Italy sponsor their own expeditions in the Atlantic since mid 15th century?
@@Videntis.History I still think Spain and Portugal would have gotten some land in the Americas in this alternate timeline, but nowhere as much in this timeline where Columbus goes to a united Italy for financial assistance for his voyage.

A united Italy would be better for both Europe and Italy as a republic in the middle ages is an interesting choice and a good idea because it shows stability and prevents major civil war in the Italian peninsula without worrying about a royal family or nobilities fighting over controlling Italy and restoring the Byzantine Empire and getting rid the Osman Dynasty. Well, Republic isn't incompatible with the notion of royal family or nobilities fighting over controlling Italy, you can see that in the Polish-Lithuanian Commonwealth
I'll be honest, I doupt that a united Italy would have so utterly crushed the Ottoman Empire at it's peak. This scenario is cool but extreamly optimistic
its not the most realistic but its based on the venetian-ottoman war and I followed the agreed upon terms if venice won, so there is some basis for it, but yeah its very optimistic
This is not peak Ottoman strengh, they didn't have the population centers yet of later times to draw from. Its not just Italy they're fighting, there's an alliance of Hungarians, Albanians and Moldovans. Its like the Venician-Ottoman wars, only with half Europe backing Venice.
1450 wasnt the ottomans at their peak, that would be in the 1600's right untill the defeat at vienna, secondly, skanderberg was kicking their ass by himself for a long time, destroying ottoman army after ottoman army send against him often double or even triple his size, never being defeated albania only fell into ottoman hands after skanderberg had died of natural causes, given that fact, the ottomans being folded like this if this much extra weight was thrown at them really isnt outside the realm of possibillity
thanks, I just taught myself taught myself how to make the animations so im still improving, but im glad you enjoyed it. Let me know if you have any scenarios you would like me to cover in the future
Well 1450's Ottomans were not at the peak of their power, while many italians duchies were at the height of their power, with Italy as a whole being as rich or possibly even richer than all Germany and France. The fleet of such a nation would surely beat the Ottomans one. And the troops that could be deployed and paid would be surely higher than any Real life anti-ottoman coalition that fought the Ottomans up to this point in our timeline. The true problem of this video is that all the powers in the italian nation or alliance collaborate way too easily. For example, France and Austria would not be pleased to see a rival being born under their nose. An unified Italy would probably want to take Sardinia and Sicily from Spain. After some times it would be hard to justify Italy owning most of Greece, since the Byzantine Empire main ethicity has Always been greek. France would possibly fight to keep the French Savoy Independent or at least try to annex part of It, since givin Italy full control of the Alps would make that a very weak border.
skanderberg was kicking their ass by himself for a ling time dude often destroying ottoman forces double or even triple his size, with this much extra weight being thrown at the ottomans being folded like this isnt out of the realm of possibillity
@@leonardocontin937the battle of mohac the battle of nicopolis and many more battles in which the Ottoman Empire by themselves fought against countless coalitions against European forces and won the first loss against Europe was battle of Vienna from 1400s-1600s the ottomans were at their peak
If italy was to unite in 1454, under a roman style republic, it would be very possible that much of history would be drastically changed, as medieval europes punching bag was basically italy, and with it uniting into one state 300 years earlier than in our timeline, it would likely cause changes to, per example, the hapsburg dynasty, which would never really come to prominence like in our timeline but instead be more of a historical fun fact, the napoleonic wars might also be changed, with it being likely that italy wouldn't have been partitioned between austria and france (the Treaty of Leoben is the prime example of this), but instead would probably end up as a forced french ally, like Austria and Prussia were. There is honestly so much that could've changed it is quite frankly unreal
The Napoleonic wars wouldn’t have happened because Napoleone was of Italian family and this theoretical Italy has both Tuscany and Corsica meaning his family isn’t going anywhere. And thus we may see at best an Italian dictatorship led by him but no french empire
Look, half of this is either unrealistic, unhistorical or Fanfiction... But like, this exact scenario it's actually a really popular question in Italy, and I'm very happy I've finally found even one person that can make me explore this scenario even in a funny way. In a realistic scenario I always thought that a united Italy in that time would have been essentially what Venice was in our timeline but way worse for everyone else in Mediterranean... On paper it may have been the most powerful country in Europe at that time and the fact that a significant part of it would have been part of the HRE would have also rubbed a lot of people the wrong way, it would had essentially the claim to be at least partially the Roman empire and the power to expand like it.
at first i was wondering why this video felt odd. then i realized that you are a youtube titan in the making. you let videos are amazing bro keep up the amazing work
The idea is very interesting but I find in it some critical point: 1. You assume that this new italian republic would be very stable and not Just collapse After the death of its founding fathers. In my opinion the Italian dinasties Who formed this new republic would scrumble for power and increase their own Power base even of It means harming the functioning of the state. 2. I think that the ottoman army would be much more of a threat than what you portrayed. Mehmed II was a great Commander and a war on this many fronts would have stretched the italiana forces and supply lines very thin allowing the ottomans to react Better. So i think the war you portrayed would probably end in a costly stalemate with the Italians holding parts of Greece and ruling the waves while the Ottomans would've beat some weakear enemy like the Moldavians. 3.althoug this new world of alliances you created is very interesting I think that spain and Italy, maybe After an initial cooperation, would've start fighting For the control of the eastern mediterrean Sea and especially sicily and Sardinia. Other than that i think that the HRE and Italy would become rivals as well, because the First would oppose a strong neighbor where It was its playground. Please take all of this as constructive critics, i think that your work Is of very High quality both in tecnic and narrative, and you are very creative in tour ideas. I enjoyed very much watching this video and i think that you have a very High potential. All the best :)
@@pietromariotti7707 Yeah, I know it wasn't super realistic, but I think if the Italians had enough troops and allies, they could have destroyed the Ottomans. I portrayed the republic in the best sense, but in reality, families would probably be bribing people and their would be some corruption behind the scenes. I don't think it would collapse though as the upper class became very wealthy from the union. Its hard to say how long an Italian-Spanish alliance would have lasted, but I am sure after the muslims were removed as a common enemy, there would be conflict eventually.
@@thatwasprettydecent7497 yeah maybe not a Great Commander but a great statesman and Sultan. I suffered Major defeats but in the end Is reign was successfull. United Italy a year after the fall of Byzantium? Damn... it would be like fate itself wants the restoration of the Roman Empire, in one form or another.
Ancient/pre-modern alternate history is genuinely so interesting, because it's so far back the possibilites of future events changing is crazy. This scenario alone would have probably changed world history.
I really do wonder how the relationship with the Italian republic and Byzantine (Roman) empire would be. Also it’s weird hearing how they except other as successor states of Rome when they are in fact Rome. But overall super interesting video
I am not sure, but in the real world, some byzantine emperors recognized the HRE as roman successors, so they probably would have good relations with Italy.
thank you so much for the glowing review, I just started making videos a month ago but I am happy with my rate of growth, hopefully i make it to 100k one day
Love the in depth video but I have some criticism: 1) I doubt the crusade could have so easily crushed the Ottomans. Italy has to maintain supply routes across seas on multiple fronts, cohesion with her allies, and stability following such a big unification, while the Ottomans have defenders advantage and were very strong at this point. No doubt Italy would be a powerhouse and one of the strongest countries in Europe, but fighting such a war, even with strong allies, wouldn’t go that far. I think the crusade would still “win”, but the Ottomans would have to give minor concessions instead of being wiped of the face of the world. 2) A Spanish-Italian alliance with Sicily and Sardinia still disputed would collapse immediately. 3) Italy technically still being part of the Holy Roman Empire while claiming succession to Rome is bound to have consequences 4) How are the great powers, especially France, so unbothered by an overpowered Italy popping up out of nowhere? Basically, I think the video is far, *far* too optimistic, but the presentation and idea are really good and fun to watch
Really cool video! I would also like to see a what if Gian Galeazzo Visconti never died and was able to unify northen Italy. In the year 1402 he controlled from Como to Perugia and Siena (Pisa and Genoa included) and from Vercelli to Belluno.
Good job on not going conquest happy. It’s very rare and unlikely to do mass conquest, especially consistently. Many alternative roman RUclipsrs believe a unified Italy would conquer France, Spain, north Africa, etc. Especially by themselves. That wouldn’t happen. I like your gradual growth. It’s not extreme and it’s not too small. Perfect
@Nostradamus I have a few problems: - Venice beating Sforza is a very solid POD if not the most plausible Renaissance POD, but the problem is that Venice would eat up the entire Lombardy/Linguria regions and become a 800 lb gorilla within Italy before Medici could do anything if it beats Sforza. The entire Lombardy was a vacuum after Visconti's death and Sforza was the only obstacle to Venice's domination of North Italy. - Thus, Medici would not be able to exert influence like he did in this TL because Venice would have had the final call. Florence was weaker militarily and economically than even the original Venice, let alone the expanded Venice. If anything, Florence would have become Venice's next target.
Amazing video! Brilliant production and a wet-dream-inspiring timeline for any Italian (or Spaniard or Hungarian or Greek for that matter) I’d assume lmaoo
This italian republic would also get Sicily from Spain, because it was strongly linked to the Kingdom of Naples, that in reality wasn't even called like that. As you know, at some point in history there was a Kingdom of two sicilies, and that's because during the France reign in italy Naples and Sicily were united in only one Kingdom that was named "Kingdom of Sicily". When the kingdom was split in half by France and Spain, their territories were both counted as the same Kingdom, and both were sicilies. It would be stupid to give only one part of the Kingdom to a reborn Italy and It would feel like shit, lmao
No, for the simple fact that in that period the kingdom of Sicily and the kingdom of Naples had two very distinct and separate governments, commanded by two different viceroys. This is because the Sicilian independence sentiment has always been very present on the island, starting with the Sicilian Vespers of 1282 up to the uprisings of 1848. Even under the Normans and the Swabians the Sicilian parliament in Palermo has always had a certain autonomy, after more than two centuries of separate government I doubt they would have gladly accepted a unification under a "foreign" ruler

Had Italy unified this early, they likely would have established colonizes in the Americas like the Spanish, Portuguese, English and French. It would be a interesting development to say the least to see Italian speaking countries in the Americas.
Personally I think that had italy unified in 1454, it would definetly struggle to survive it's early days for a bunch of reasons like; the fact a lot of these city states were already be in the HREc which would turn it and by extension the rest of the Habsbugs against the young rebelious republic, as well as obviously the ottomansc which would be pretty concerned at to have a new potential rival power in it's backyard, and finally the the pope, being in this so called "republic" which is more of a federation really, would have been seen as compromised for by his own interests to all his enemies and other neutral states, so he would pay the heavy price of alienating a lot of catholics and therefore loosing more influence by actually joining this. The only way I could see the Italian republic survive it's early days is with foreign only with some form of foreign help, which cant be the HRE nor the Habsbourgs since they de facto rebelled against them, and obviously not the ottomans because of clashing interests in the mediterrenean, as well as not the spaniards because they wouldn't have much to gain by helping this republic. Which just like tyou said i would only leaves the young Republic with France, a far more militarily powerfull nation and the only state that could actually be inclined to be ally to italy. The problem is that france being the disproporsionally more powerfull player, italy would automatically make vecome, at best, France's junior partner, at worse, a full on french protectorate (by the way altough I see the reasoning behind it, I cant see the Republic wanting to integrate savoy, I think it would rather leave it as a buffer while france would maybe buy off corsica in that time). Also the republic could not have basically single handedly defeated the ottomans (quite litterally the most powerfull nation in that time), not to menion that italy wouldn't be in any position to actually antagonize, and definetly not attack the ottomans simply because it would put France, italy's big brother, in a position where it would have to choose between the ottomans, a potential powerfull ally over italy, a young rebel republic, because of it's Agean claims, which would have to be abandonned in order to safe the alliance with France. But had the new republic survived it's rough beginning, it would have been an absolute economic powerhouse (at least until america is dicovered) and it would have even more of a golden age than it had OTL, imagine a free thinking paradise where the rich families would be even richer because of cooperation and even more richer since they wouldn't wage costly wars against each other, so they would have even more money to finance even more great artists and their projects, maybe they would have even more reasons to build since they would have prestige wars instead of actual wars. It really makes you wonder what would the republic transform into after it's golden age would finnish? how would this republic have affected the protestant wars? where would the republic stand in the french revolution? would there even be a Napoleon? would they even still have sold corsica? Would it have survived in the modern day?
at that point in time italian city states were in the HRE only by name and convinence. they fought off the emperor in multiple occasion. they even won sometimes. in our timeline i mean
Had Italian state unite they'd have been more powerful than any other power, as they were already richer After discovering America Italy would have been the superpower of the following centuries
@@KameroonEmperor LOL, how did you come to your nonsensical conclusions? Italians states were as rich, if not richer than most, if not all, Europeans states

Interesting for sure, but I think to “predict” a war in it’s entirety is very difficult. Don’t take this negative, I really liked this video and your route of telling an alternative history is fascinating. I just think it would come off as less “EU4-ish” if you more focused on the social, developmental and economic factors and not micromanaging the war itself. I think although the war doesn’t seem unrealistic per se, the timeline may or may not seems a bit off. Again, this very well be my biased opinion so please don’t take it to heart, and please prove me wrong but just from intuition it does seem “weird” that the ottomans would fall in this timeline. Their military was feared for a very good reason.
that is fair, I have made the ottomans lose to have a major change in the timeline. I want to be unique compared to other alt hist people and I think the wars do that for me. I am planning on making future videos in 2 parts going forward. Part 1 will be the major war(s) that change things, and part 2 will be about the social, religious and economic factors of the timeline. I hope that makes sense
Ironically (since you eliminate it as a possible player or contended right at the beginning of the timeline), I think one of the few Italian states at the time that was interested IRL in an expansion and unification was precisely Sforza's Milan, actually.
Ottomans irl: Literally conquer everything they see through technological superiority and superior administration. Ottomans in this timeline: lose their entire empire in one war rip ottomanbros
I like this scenario alot although I think the Byzantines would have insisted on some Hellenic region concessions with Italy gaining Egypt. Egypt was still a IMMENSE agricultural powerhouse at this time and would be a worthwhile prize to give up some Anatolian and Greek lands for while in the process of such a amicable agreement cementing new borders and friendly relations between Ravenna and Constantinople especially in the face of trade being taken over by Portugal and the Byzantines likely seeking Egypt and the Levant as a means to make up for the gradual loss of the silk road trade but would likely be willing to settle in exchange for the territorial concessions I mentioned ontop of keeping the Levant. With that being said any chance of a part 2 for this scenario?
I like what you came up with, the war between europe and the ottomans was heavily based on the venice-ottoman wars, so I used the agreed upon terms from before the war for the basis. If Italy was able to beat the Mamluks so easily, you're probably correct that they would have given up some greek holdings from the byzantines at the treaty of Alexandria. I don't plan on making a part 2 at the moment, but I may in the future. I am thinking about making future scenarios in two videos, so the first would be the military expansion and battles, the second would be the politics, culture, religion, etc, and how they would be further in the future. What do you think?
@@Videntis.History Italy at least would probably enter a period of consolidation outside of getting into the colonial game I dont see them doing any major territorial expansions for the next 50 to 100 years while they reorganize and centralized authority. With italy united and even expanded it has to deal with the convoluted mess that is having a expansive feudal state and cut down on some of the legal jurisdiction, exceptions, and unique local law systems etc to properly function and contend with the other feudal European kingdoms. Further I imagine a series of territory exchanges may occur with France in order to mutually create more defendable and clearer borders as the current borders are a bit off to say the least. Further I see the Byzantines slowly drifting away from the alliance and buddying up with Russia during this period though not going as far as to break ties with Italy just yet as they recover from everything. And so long as no immensely ambitious leader takes hold of either nation I imagine conflict will be avoided even if tensions rise and fall now and then especially over trade and economic matters in the face of rapid change. Meanwhile Persia is rather weak at this particular point which might prove a avenue of note for both the Portuguese and Byzantines as both have reason to carve up Persia, especially in regards to Byzantine access to the Pacific and Portugal's need for as many trade ports as possible as well as gaining access to the regions Opium and connection to the silk road that goes through the northern route. France I dont see doing much different outside of not fucking around Italy although they may expand their ambitions in the HRE as a result especially with the Protestant reformation and may seek to take everything Burgundy had both directly and indirectly which could spark a series of major wars easily dragging Italy into the mix despite the need for a internal focus which may see Italy gaining silver rich lands in the Alps depending on how things go and if Austria gets involved.

Ottomans weren't at their peak until the 1680s.

@Nostradamus what about a real united HRE in the middle ages?
Except for the Ottomans being heavily nerfed this video was actually very well thought, might try to replicate this in EU4

They would only be heavily nerfed if this was in the 1680s.

There is honestly so much that could've changed it is quite frankly unreal
yeah, our world today would be unrecognizable
The Napoleonic wars wouldn’t have happened because Napoleone was of Italian family and this theoretical Italy has both Tuscany and Corsica meaning his family isn’t going anywhere. And thus we may see at best an Italian dictatorship led by him but no french empire
You mean Modern History punching bag. Italy was independent in Middle Ages
Man, how you can make the BEST alternate scenarios? I loved the video, great work :D
If I make a part 2, there would be a series of Germanic-Italian wars that would take place
@@Videntis.History a part two would be Great!

This was the First video i Watched from your Channel, You've Came Far in the Past few Months!
The idea is very interesting but I find in it some critical point:
P.s. as an italian i enjoyed for once been the Ones who are doing the beating and not the Ones who are been beaten althoug 😂
"Mehmed was a great commander"
His horrendous record says otherwise.
@@thatwasprettydecent7497 yeah maybe not a Great Commander but a great statesman and Sultan. I suffered Major defeats but in the end Is reign was successfull. I think that every patriotic italian would have liked the Medici as rulers. As a Sicilian, I'm a bit upset we are left outside...
I wasn't sure if Spain would give up Sicily and Italy would not fight them over it as they were allies, so I think Sicily would stay Spanish
@@Videntis.History I understand: these are speculations, after all. Good point
Hell no
Love the in depth video but I have some criticism:
1) I doubt the crusade could have so easily crushed the Ottomans.
3) Italy technically still being part of the Holy Roman Empire while claiming succession to Rome is bound to have consequences
4) How are the great powers, especially France, so unbothered by an overpowered Italy popping up out of nowhere?
Basically, I think the video is far, *far* too optimistic, but the presentation and idea are really good and fun to watch
Really cool video!
I would also like to see a what if Gian Galeazzo Visconti never died and was able to unify northen Italy.
In the year 1402 he controlled from Como to Perugia and Siena (Pisa and Genoa included) and from Vercelli to Belluno.
oh cool, do you mind expanding that a bit more so i know what exactly you envision in that timeline
Perfect
@Nostradamus I have a few problems:
- Venice beating Sforza is a very solid POD if not the most plausible Renaissance POD, but the problem is that Venice would eat up the entire Lombardy/Linguria regions and become a 800 lb gorilla within Italy before Medici could do anything if it beats Sforza.
That’s fair
Amazing video! Brilliant production and a wet-dream-inspiring timeline for any Italian (or Spaniard or Hungarian or Greek for that matter) I’d assume lmaoo

As an Italian, I LOVE this timeline

This italian republic would also get Sicily from Spain, because it was strongly linked to the Kingdom of Naples, that in reality wasn't even called like that. As you know, at some point in history there was a Kingdom of two sicilies, and that's because during the France reign in italy Naples and Sicily were united in only one Kingdom that was named "Kingdom of Sicily". When the kingdom was split in half by France and Spain, their territories were both counted as the same Kingdom, and both were sicilies. It would be stupid to give only one part of the Kingdom to a reborn Italy and It would feel like shit, lmao
yeah that makes sense
No, for the simple fact that in that period the kingdom of Sicily and the kingdom of Naples had two very distinct and separate governments, commanded by two different viceroys. This is because the Sicilian independence sentiment has always been very present on the island, starting with the Sicilian Vespers of 1282 up to the uprisings of 1848.
Even under the Normans and the Swabians the Sicilian parliament in Palermo has always had a certain autonomy, after more than two centuries of separate government I doubt they would have gladly accepted a unification under a "foreign" ruler
The production value of this is incredible. You have made such a good job! One little criticism if I may, you have a really nice voice, try to not add so much vocal fry to the end of every single sentence. It becomes annoying very quickly and distracts from what you're saying. Also vocal fry makes it seem like you are uninterested or bored
Other than that you are doing a great job man, keep it up!
yeah I need to get better with my audio for sure, but thanks for the nice review, i am almost done with my next video and I already recorded the audio, but it should be better after that

Personally I think that had italy unified in 1454, it would definetly struggle to survive it's early days for a bunch of reasons like;
the fact a lot of these city states were already be in the HREc which would turn it and by extension the rest of the Habsbugs against the young rebelious republic, as well as obviously the ottomansc which would be pretty concerned at to have a new potential rival power in it's backyard, and finally the the pope, being in this so called "republic" which is more of a federation really, would have been seen as compromised for by his own interests to all his enemies and other neutral states, so he would pay the heavy price of alienating a lot of catholics and therefore loosing more influence by actually joining this.
Yeah, those are good points
at that point in time italian city states were in the HRE only by name and convinence. they fought off the emperor in multiple occasion. they even won sometimes. in our timeline i mean
Had Italian state unite they'd have been more powerful than any other power, as they were already richer
After discovering America Italy would have been the superpower of the following centuries

I suspect it would be likely that France would be threatened by a united Italy and would be reluctant to give up its own claims to Naples. It could be likely that France and the UK would team up to fight the Italians similar as to how they did against a united Germany. Regardless loved the video.
thats fair
I think at this point they'd have just finished the 100 year war. I doubt they would've had the appetite to team up and start another massive war
Plus France would have taken the remaining territories on their frontier which we see on the map, team up with switzerland against italy

One question: when did the Italian republic in TTL turn into a monarchy (de jure ir de facto). You explained it originally as a diarchical republic at first but later on said it had an heir apparent (a term that wouldn’t fort with how the Italian republic’s government that you explained would work) that married the sister of Ferdinand of Aragon implying there was a change in government without mentioning said change happening. Amazing video otherwise though, I just found your channel and eagerly look forward to more of your alternate history videos.
No, Italy remained a republic. I meant that Lorenzo was obviously going to be the next Consul as he was very rich, came from an important family, and had success against the Ottomans. He was not the king, he was basically guaranteed to be the consul. I hope that makes sense
And Venice would never allow Medici to crown himself King. Venice was even more powerful than Florence itself.
