What if the USSR Defended Czechoslovakia in 1938?
HTML-код
- Опубликовано: 10 июл 2024
- Historically Czechoslovakia was famously partitioned in 1938, where they lost the Sudetenland to Germany in the Munich conference. I want to raise a question regarding what if the Soviet Union decided to help the seemingly lonely Czechoslovakia against the German aggressor.
This was possible, as the two countries had good relations, as seen on the 16th of May 1935, when the Czechoslovak-Soviet Treaty of Mutual Assistance was signed between the two governments. Allegedly, Stalin pledged to help Czechoslovakia in the event of an attack by Germany or Poland, but only if France decides to help first.
You will soon find out how the Soviet Union supporting Czechoslovakia would affect German morale and what effect it would have on events in Europe. Let me show you what I came up with.

Czechoslovakia being saved instead of invaded by the Soviets. What a timeline
Well the Soviets would still benefit from it, just in other ways
They were technically "saved" in both, just in a different way
Imagine thinking Czeckoslovakia was better under the 3rd Reich's ocupation than with an independent socialist government
I mean they were also saved in our timeline, they elected a communist government post war because they saw the west as having abandoned them.

Agreed
Based on what I was reading yesterday Stalin offered to defend Czechoslovakia while or immediately before the Sudatenland conference was going on, but neither Romania or Poland allowed Soviet troops through (due to the obvious risk of the Soviets using this as an easy opportunity to get a new puppet state). However, I don’t think it’s impossible that Romania could have been convinced, and that is probably what I would use as a POD.
So I got it pretty right, but didn't cover Romania
Romania had repeatedly said contradictory things but King Carol II in October 1937 told French General Gamelin that he would allow the Soviet troops to pass through Romanian territory if the key moment arrived in the future.
The Soviets wouldn't have dared touch Poland at the time because of Poland's value for Britain, who was a soviet enemy. The USSR causing trouble in Poland, even in just the eastern parts would have led to war with Poland, Germany, the UK and possibly even more countries.
@@gnas1897 Certainly, but Stalin’s idea was to convince Britain to be his ally in a untied front against the Germans, if that happened he probably thought, keeping the Soviets as an ally would be important enough to Britain and France overlook any Spanish style meddling in the governments of Romania or Poland.

Poland would likely not interveen really
They pursued politics of being strictly neutral with both USSR and Germany having multiple pacts with both.

Map projecetion of hoi4 is also used which is kinda weird since most maps don't use it, and the borders have the same accuracy of hoi4 even in places where hoi gets the borders slightly off when other maps do not.

As Czech historian not approved (if you want i can send some photos of Czechoslovak-Soviet military friendship 1934-38)
Everyone knows Czechoslovakia had a mutual assistance pact with the Soviets since 1935.
The Little Entente will likely help Czechoslovakia too because with a strong Ally like Soviet Union they are more brave to help Czechoslovakia.
Romania joining against the USSR would be scary, so I don't think they will do it. Yugoslavia joining against Germany via their border in Austria is something that was not wanted too. I really don't know if the Little Entente would join, but is a cool topic for another video!

It is, but kind of cool ngl
In the north of Moravia there are mountains and at the same time there is the best fortified part of the border with Germany, a lot of heavy fortifications and a lot of other fortifications (light fortifications) for the whole Czechoslovakia there were 263 heavy objects and 10014 light objects. Moreover, the czechoslovak mobilized army in 1938 had 1 250 000 men, and Germany had 1600 000, and as we know, for a attacking army, needs 3 times superiority. so the north would probably not have been completely won, it would have been more like the south of Moravia where there are lowlands, but there would have been deployed again a number of our tanks lt-35 which far exceeded the German Pzkpfw II.

Great video but i have a feeling that you underrestimated the czechoslovak army, i personaly think that they would perform better.
Well, they would resist Germany until the Oster coup, so I think I gave them fair credit
That Is a fair point
Look... Poland had around 120,000 Active duty soldiers in 1938 and Czechoslovakia had 1 250 000. Not to mention that every Czechoslovakia division was equipped with machine guns, and had one of the best-equipped infantry divisions in the world. Poland would have been wiped out in a couple days, if for whatever reason they were in war against Soviet and Czechoslovakia... There were forts on the borders with Germany, so Czechoslovakia had enough to visit Poland... The "conquered territories"(that you draw) were literary random blobs... Hitler himself mentioned in his book, that his plan was to attack Brno and Ostrava to cut Bohemia from Slovakia. Not to mention, that you didn't mention at all, that Hungary also seized territory. For the reasons above, Poland didn't want a conflict with Czechoslovakia. Certainly, it couldn't afford to get into conflict, considering they had a 6-year plan and enemies on both east and west. Realistically speaking, if Czechoslovakia declined, then Hungary and Germany would attack them. They would use airspace advantage and bombard Prague and Ostrava. Considering Soviet interference, they would probably be sent to handle Hungaria, considering they divisions were worse in both experience and equipment. Czechoslovakia would probably try to surprise Hungaria at some point and get them capitulated with dominant ltz. Still, then again, Germany would probably help them and such a plan would have failed. I don't think there is a single point that you made, that would have made sense... which is probably caused by you getting knowledge from hoi4, but it might be something else. Either way, you seem to over-sympathize the power of the Soviets. Their army was at best third behind Germany and Czechoslovakia (of active parties), but considering their lack of equipment even Poland would probably caused quite a dense in the early days. In the end, Czechoslovakia couldn't win, cause Germany could just flatten it with ground.
1 250 000 soldiers from which 1 100 000 were mobilised in 1 year, Poland could ve done the same thing or even more because of higher population

I think we would deny it anyway, we were capitalist country and our politicians knew that help from USSR now = communism later.
In case of at least little help in 1938 and finishing our fortifications in time, history would be completely different, Germany was not THAT strong in 1938 and our army was pretty modern and we have more than 1 milion men mobilised in 1938 and defenders have always advantage, if we fought and western countries admitted that we are victims, Hitler would be beaten already in 1938 or 1939.
The biggest fail of our politics was to not getting Poland on our side, they had 20 years for that after WWI and they failed. If Poles believed to us that Hitler will be danger for everyone, we would totally smash him together in 1938, history is b**ch.
You explained it actually pretty well, we were ordered to not fight by western countries and our allies France and UK, if we resisted in 1938, we could be seen as aggressors and those who are against peace, but Poles still believe that we just joined nazis, their version of history is always weird when I am confronted with that, they have no clue what actually happened in 1938 and 1939, they just learn Poland good, everyone else bad. Their point of view is actually pretty similar to how Russians see their history.
BTW, I like Poland and Poles, don't take me wrong, but never speak about history with them, they really have no clue what actually happened in many historical events.
Another thing that is needed to be mentioned is that Russians absolutely hated Czechs and Slovaks before WWII, because of our legions in Russia fighting against both - tsarists and reds and they also blame us from stealing their national gold. If Soviets helped us, it would not be actual help, but just occupation from other side.
Also I forgot to mention the Czechoslovak legion, I 100% should have mentioned it at least. Thank you for the further information, I love learning new stuff!
@@rewriting-history But don't take my very limited point of view and knowledge of history as facts, I know nothing actually. 😀

Great video, but wouldn't france and Britain intervene to prevent the USSR from dismantling them?
Well wouldn't Britain and France intervene against Germany to prevent them from dismantling them? No. The same appeasement strategy would most likely carry over to the Soviet Union, at least up until 1939.
@rewriting-history great point but wasn't appeasement of the nazis expansion allowed for them gaining time to build up their military and also to prevent the ussr from expanding? Also, weren't the allies more afraid of the USSR than the nazis until the invasion of poland?
@@rewriting-history the soviet union would not have had the same sympathy the germans had with the pretext of the treaty of versailles and reunification of the german people.
