How Do I Create a StudentAid.gov Account If I Don’t Have a Social Security Number?

- To complete the 2024-25 online Free Application for Federal Student Aid (FAFSA®) form, you will need a StudentAid.gov account.
Starting in December 2023, you will be able to create a StudentAid.gov account even if you don’t have a Social Security number (SSN). To do so, you’ll follow the prompts on-screen to enter your information and select the “I don’t have a Social Security number” checkbox.
Accounts created without an SSN have limited functionality. The only people who should create an account without an SSN are a student’s parent or spouse who doesn’t have an SSN or a student who’s a citizen of the Freely Associated States and needs to complete the FAFSA form online. You must have an SSN or be a citizen of the Freely Associated States to be eligible to receive federal student aid. More: studentaid.gov/announcements-...
The 2024-25 FAFSA form is available for students attending college between July 1, 2024, and June 30, 2025. When you submit your completed FAFSA form, you’ll get an email confirming that we received your form with preliminary information related to your eligibility for federal student aid. They are discriminating against students whose parents are undocumented and lack social security. They are consistently placing them at a disadvantage - this is a form of racism. The system is not effective for those with Individual Taxpayer Identification Numbers (ITINs).
Wrong. Anyone that’s born in America regardless of the immigration status of their parents becomes an American citizen with a Social Security number. The only people without Social Security numbers are criminal invaders. Criminal invaders should not get any benefits in America. They should get immediately deported. It’s not fair to hard-working legal Americans that we are having our tax dollars stolen from us in order to give free stuff to criminals.
You need to fix this issue and listen to the comments because there are numerous scholarships that require the FAFSA be completed before the end of Jan 15-23 so please fix this as quickly as you can without causing too many issues. This is keeping us disadvantage kids down at the bottom of the ladder.
How has no one sued already?????? THEY ARE DISCRIMINATING against certain students.
I found the following comment here and it worked for me, I was stuck in the same ssn section and all I did was to follow the next comment: hey not sure if youve figured it out but this worked for me i got it on reddit this is what they said “ So I had the same issue and fixed it. Go through the process and once you get to the screen where the ssn button doesn’t work, click your previous arrow to go back to the previous screen. Then tap on continue. Doing that should allow you to skip that ssn button issue.”

It does not work. After attempting to continue without an SSN, it redirects me back to step one and will not let me continue until I submit a SSN. The “I don’t have a SSN” box no longer works after this happens.

Yeah i have the same issue and it give a phone number to call but line is either full or hangs up. I though this was suppose to be easier but i found the old way to do it better

THANK YOU SO MUCH!! This actually worked, my husband was able to create the fafsa account, then got the email to verify identity, had to call to the number they gave (waited like an hour but fine), then while them on the phone, they sent him an email that included a case number with an attestation form, for him to fill out and sign to send back along with a copy of his passport to an email address it specified. So right now it will take a couple of days for them to verify identity and then he'll be able to complete his portion

It let me skip it and complete the rest of the 7 steps but when I’m on the last step ready to submit it. I get a message saying “unknown error has occurred please try again or close all browsers” and I’ll try and same message again. Anyone have the same problem?

Doesn't let my father create a FSA ID without a SSN. It keeps redirecting him to the beginning. This needs to be fixed ASAP!
I emailed them two weeks ago as well as tried calling and same problem persist! FAFSA DO SOMETHING
you can also submit a paper FAFSA if it's impossible to create an account.
My dad is trying to make his account but every time we finish puting our address and phone number it drags me back to the 1st page and asking for a ssn even tho we don't have one and it doesn't let us select no ssn.

Why doni feel like this was done on purpose, to keep those without a ss# from applying and giving them more hurdles?
After attempting to continue without an SSN, it redirects me back to step one and will not let me continue until I submit a SSN. Once I get to the address page is when it redirects me and completely doesn't let the account to be created! FIX IT OR AT LEAST find a way to bypass this as its really stressful and limiting especially when one is depending on financial aid!

I apologize for the confusion. Initially, I was searching for information on Alberta student aid in Canada, and I mistakenly thought this platform was about Canadians. Upon closer inspection, I realized it was about SSN, not SIN. in Canada it stand for (Social insurance number)

It's not letting me make an account. There's a bug on "Personal Information" page, after adding the address and phone number it won't let me get passed because it asks for a SSN and it won't let me click "I do not have a SSN" box.
Update: I got a hold of them on the phone-- StudentAid is working on the website.. they told me to wait 3 days to try again. Meanwhile, we need to go to the Student Aid Forms and complete the Attestation and Validation of Identity form.
lucky you that they answered! My son completed and submitted his section and so did I, but my husband who doesn't have a SSN hasn't been able to complete his part past the address. Did they tell you if people w/o the SSN can sign and submit their section online? thanks!

@@americarodriguez9920 we also got a hold of them after 28 minutes on hold but they said the dept of education is working on how to get the contributors w/o SSN to create their account and they have no idea when it will be fixed, that we should keep trying every day. A user got a workaround (read latest comments), maybe we'll try that
Won't accept the student address when continue is clicked, instead the screen pages-up as if something is missing even though all fields are complete.

OMG we have same problem here.
Two times i tried it said there was an error and to try again later.
My Husband tried and said same thing but he pressed to submit and immediately he got a email saying you need to contact us. Because you don't have a ssn we were unableto verify your identity based on your responses. Call us to confirm your identity. He called a million time today and no one was available to assist. That's not fair. Some colleges deadline are approaching.

I talked to a representative over the phone and they told me they have no ETA on when the issue with the SSN will be solved. They made me stay on the call for two hours to tell me they cant do anything about it. They said keep trying every week and check if its fixed.

so I found out a way to fill out the FAFSA form without your parents having an id basically when your parents click on the invite email that is sent to them you just log into your own account and you can basically fill out everything except their consent and signature because they don't have accounts but apparently after the form is submitted and processed you can go back in and submit the consent and signature.
Where you able to get the signature? Cause it dont allow me to add the SSN like everyone else in the comments?

Question. My dad made a fsa id years ago and i think we used his Tax payer id as that was what they told us to do. Now i cant log in to his account because obviously the id is not a real ssn. What should i do?? Make him a new id or what?

I received an email to call you to verify ny identity because you couldn't verify me by answering your questions online. No representative is available to take my call 😢
Here is an update, I called the number in the email they sent me and I explained what I did, they took note of this issue that is affecting a lot of people, the representative stated that yes there is a lot of people with the same issue. after that, she sent me the Attestation & Validation of Identity for that, you need to print and email back with a form of ID after that it takes 3-5 business day to verify your identity she stated and then you are all done. I can't tell more because I am in that part of the process now.
my husband got his identity verified after emailing the attestation form and passport so he was able to create the fafsa id and log in, but when he logs in, our son's form doesn't appear at his end. Let us know if once you get your identity verified if you are able to complete your section on your kid's form

I compared their inputs with mine, exactly the same, even the spaces! I also tried to reach my daughter’s existing form without invitation as parent, not working! Any luck your side?
@@dianechen1827 unfortunately not, my husband has tried every day since he got his fafsa id but it is not linked to our son's account. Called the helpline yesterday and they said they were aware of the issue but have no timeframe of when it should be fixed, very frustrating. We have to keep trying. If it is not fixed by the 1st week of March, we'll send it in by mail

This is exactly what has been happening to me for the past MONTH! I've been unable to contact an agent for all of this time. And I absolutely need to receive federal aid if I want to continue going to college.

Any idea how I can add my spouse information on the 24-25 fafsa form? He does not have a ssn. We have tried putting all zeros but still the system doesn’t let us move forward. I need help to see how we can overcome this since the form is requesting his info since he is a contributor

@@Tonnyyyyyy1820 yes. The problem was the actual form… the form was missing the section where you can check the box that your spouse does not have a ssn. Just recently we want back to the Fafsa form and to our surprise the form was updated. Let me know if this helped. Thanks

Remove the home address, it should then allow you to by pass that but then when you get to the review page edit the box to input the home address

It won't even open the verifying questions, it sends all parents to call to verify their accounts. If they get lucky to get an agent and case number, once they send the documentation the accounts have not been verified yet. I have families asking what to do for more than 3 weeks, please fix this issue as you are affecting students that need the aid to attend college. Where is the equality?
THIS! I wasn't even prompted with the verifying questions! I have been struggling for the past month to get my parents' identity verified. I have YET to merely get a hold of an agent and start a case number. All of this is blatant discrimination.

Jeez, this is so nice compared to FAFSA apps up to now. Glad that they are making changes
I tried calling but they would hang up, so I kept calling every single second until I finally got through. by the way, call the English one the Spanish won't work, also don't tell them that you will translate for your parents because they are going to tell you that they can't allow that, so instead train your parents what to say, here are the questions they are going to ask: 1. what's your name, spell it out(only they ask this when they don't understand). 2. What is your birthday. 3. what is your email. 4. What is your phone number. what id did with my mom is that I first made her practice all the answers and wrote them down for her and when she forgot I would whisper to her how to say it and then she would say it through the phone(make sure they are the one that is saying it because then they wont let you answer for her). by the way, make sure you have the account for them first and once they verify you through the phone you will get an email, and that email you just have to send them the documentation they ask for. By the way, I just sent them in today now I have to wait.

@@whynot_ash3078 we just sent it one time but first I made the mistake to send it separately to an email they tell you to send. and so then I forwarded to the same email where they can see the case number but this time I made sure the other email they told us to send can see the case number too.
